An erotic retelling as dark and decadent as the myth itself.
Persephone has heard whispers of what happens across the river Styx. The parties that sprawl through the palace. The proclivities of those invited. And all the things it is rumored that good girls like her give up for a taste of it. Their bodies. Their inhibitions. Their souls.
When an invitation sparks her curiosity, Persephone finds herself in a world of luxury and lust, making a deal with Hades himself. But the longer she's with the King of the Dead, the closer she feels to what it means to be alive.
As rumors from across the river threaten to uproot her newly sown happiness, Persephone begins to wonder where the line is drawn between pleasure and pain, villains and victors, truth and myth. And if she dares to rewrite her own story, will hers be a tale of romance, redemption, or tragedy?
January Foxx writes dark, sexy, seductive love stories. She is the author of STYX & STONES, a retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth, coming in February 2025.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a spicy book rather than a book with spice. Greek mythology is such a malleable space for these kinds of books.
This was spicy spicy spicy! In the fanfic biz, we’d call this a 🌽 with plot (PWP). Almost immediately we’re thrown into The Underworld at Hades’ exclusive party as dear Persephone. But I never got that weird icky feeling that some dark romances give me, I think because there’s a lot of communication that happens as Persephone and Hades navigate their D/s roles and dynamics.
And they have such lovely chemistry beyond the bed too. Yes, it’s instant love but their banter adds so much and each character is able to stand on their own.
I also really love the use of the other Gods as CEOs and other powerful people. Hermes as a gossip column reporter made me laugh so hard 😂
The mfmmm and the Cerberus scene (spoiler: it’s a group scene) SHEEEESH 👀🫠
Thank you to January Foxx for this ARC. I needed a smoke break after this.
Styx & Stones: An Erotic Underworld Romance by January Foxx
An erotic retelling as dark and decadent as the myth itself.
Rating: **** Feels: Anticipation, Heat (this one is hot) Style: Erotica, Dark Fantasy, Dark Mythology First published February 4, 2025 : 230 pages, Kindle
The heat between Hades and Persephone was oh so sweet. I loved not only the heat but the story. FMC with a heart and well ... our villain was amazingly hot. It was really a delightful story for so many many reasons and not just the heat. Really well done story, heat and characters. I loved our supporting characters too. The very clever play on mythological stories/characters added alot of fun to the story.
Favorite quote: To Happiness then. Life's certainly too shory to settle for less. And we never know where we might find it. sometimes the most unlikly places. But oh, the bounty they can bring.
This book has: Public play Collars FFFM scenes FMMMM scenes lots and lots of spice
I really enjoyed this book!! It had me hooked from the very beginning and I just couldn't put it down!
The pacing was amazing and kept me interested and enthralled! There was a little bit of a lull around the 80% percent mark. But it wasn't too bad of a lull, and it was the only time I wasn't completely enthralled with the book!
The spice was great! The characters had a lot of chemistry, and I really liked their dynamic!
It is extremely spicy, and it is BD$M, so if that's not your thing, this is probably not the book for you.
A couple of quotes I liked:
“Maybe that’s what I do,” he teases. “Sit here in my big palace across the river and know things.”
His eyes flicker with a smile. “Funny, isn’t it? That being tied up makes you feel free?”
Persephone is the good girl who abides by the rules of society and obeys her mother’s every command, and she’s painfully bored of it all. So when she finds the golden coin in her drink at a bar one night (Hades calling card) she decides to take the ferry across the River Styx to the Underworld. Hades takes an interest in her and they enter into a dom/sub relationship where he opens her eyes up to a whole new world.
This is a sexual awakening story, but also a story about Persephone finding herself and her voice while falling in love with the King of the Dead.
I flew through this book and I really enjoyed it! I loved the chemistry between Hades and Persephone and the spice that happens throughout this story was amazing! I really liked the story and I thought this one was really well written! I definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a Greek Mythology retelling!
If you are looking for a super duper spicy retelling of the classic Greek mythology, look no further folks! I have been reading some dark romances lately and let me tell you, somehow this story took all of the spicy elements in those dark romances (and then some) and wove them into a beautiful (yet very spicy) love story. There are some wild moments in there, but it never felt filthy or depraved, which is an impressive feat.
Getting to witness Persephone embracing a submissive role to Hades and see her transformation in the process was such a fun journey. I especially love the line when Hades brings attention to how “being tied up makes you feel free”. Also the edging in the first half of the book is top tier 😮💨
I really enjoyed the side plot too. The romantic suspense element was really fun!
This is a book that I think all my dark romance girlies will easily enjoy, and especially for those just starting to dabble into dark romances.
You are immediately thrown into the realm of Hades and Persephone, and are taken on a journey of Persephone growing up and taking reigns of her life while blossoming into the Queen of the Underworld we all know her to be. Hades guiding her along the way, but allowing her to find her own sexuality on the way - - and buckle in for some sexy scenes!! Great plot line overall and I am so happy to have been an ARC reader for January Fox. I hope to read more from them!

~~ Summary: Persephone is constantly being told what to do to maintain being in her mother’s good graces but when a golden coin grants her the potential to explore who she wants to be, she takes it. The only risk? This coin takes her on a ferry over to the Underworld, a realm full of things beyond even her imagination. To discover herself, she’ll have to fall right into the arms… or collar… of Hades himself. ~~ Thoughts: As a big fan of retellings of Hades & Persephone, I absolutely loved this novel. Persephone is strong yet soft & Hades is dark and powerful yet maintains boundaries and soft moments of care. If you asked me, I think this novel is the perfect balance of spice & plot, and fully worth the read!
🖤🖤🖤🖤/5 DROP EVERYTHING, MY GREEK MYTHOLOGY GHOULS - this is the modern Hades & Persephone retelling that the horny little chaos demon inside of me has been asking for.
With Persephone’s first step into the Underworld, she embarks on a wild journey of self discovery where every new experience and sensation challenges her to accept the darkest parts of herself…and then comes Hades. Foxx wastes no time, plunging us straight into intense chemistry and steamy encounters, making it impossible not to swoon over our beloved god of the dead. Together, they navigate a seductive world that invites readers into a rich, layered, and utterly captivating dynamic that redefines both their characters. 💀🔥
The story moves fast and delivers ALL the spice! With an intense exploration of BDSM and the power dynamics within and outside the bedroom, we find that Persephone is not just a passive participant; she’s a woman with desires, advocating for them with Hades listening intently and responding with adoration (and orgasms 😈). Their relationship balances heat with genuine care, making every moment feel raw and genuine.
With lush prose and an intoxicating vibe, January Foxx has created an Underworld that’s not just a setting – it’s a mood. This book is a perfect escape filled with heat, heart, and a touch of danger. You’ll be left dreaming of midnight rendezvous in the atrium and longing for sweet nothings whispered in the dark.

👍🏽 Consent is EVERYTHING here 🫠 Power exchange that'll make you need a cold shower 💪🏽 Dom-Hades who listens AND learns 🔄 Switches welcome in this underworld 🌶️That scene in the Atrium... IYKYK
If you’re into intense, spicy romance with a twist of BDSM and fresh takes on Greek mythology, this book is going to be your jam. While I couldn't quite give this gem a full 5 stars due to my longing for a grander, spicier ending than what we got (only because I’m greedy), I had a blast, and I can't wait to see what January Foxx brings us next!
Thank you to January Foxx, for the opportunity to read, melt and review this ARC of Styx & Stones.
A dark and spicy Hades and Persephone retelling? Say less.
From the outside, good girl Persephone has it all- a famous family, a thriving business that fulfills all that she wants out of life...or does it? One little coin changes it all for her. Persephone accepts the invitation to cross the river Styx and enter a world she could not have imagined in her wildest dreams. She meets the King of the Underworld and he promises to give her all the pleasure she could ever want. Will that be enough to make her give up everything she has worked for and become Queen to Hades' King? Or will her mother Demeter ruin it all and create a famine in the process?
This is no slow burn romance- Foxx hits you with the spice right off the bat. Yes, it is insta-love, but the banter, spicy scenes, and dirty talk were ::chefs kiss:: There is some plot but it develops a little later on. I loved how Hades helps Persephone transform from sheltered princess to becoming open and even proud of who she is and her deepest, darkest desires. I would have liked to see a little more development of Hades' character. I felt like there was opportunity for a burn it all down for her moment.
Overall, I loved this short and spicy read. This is Foxx's first novel and I am so happy I was able to receive an advanced reader copy. I can't wait to see what is next for her!
If you’re a fan of the Hades and Persephone love story and have enjoyed A Touch of Chaos but wanted more spice this is the book for you.
This dark and erotic retelling of their love story is HOT. Hades is one of my favorite book boyfriends and January did not disappoint with her depiction. He is the perfect mix of sex god and protector. I love the concept of choice that is central to the storyline. The freedom that Persephone’s choice to explore the darker side of herself leads to a steamy romance not to be missed.
After hearing about what happens across the river Styx Persephone can't help the curiosity that builds inside her.
When the opportunity arises, she jumps at the chance to see what things are really like, little does she know Hades has been waiting for this moment for years.
Things get HOT fast. Hades is more than ready and willing to introduce her to his world of lust, so they strike a deal.
I was screaming for them to scrap the deal and just be together from the start.
The side characters were all amazing as well. Cerberus and Adonis can show me around the underworld anytime.
If this is what hell is like book me a first-class ticket!
I first fell for Hades and Persephone with Scarlett St Clair's books. Scarlett gave me this in-depth story, and January gave me the spice I needed. I liked in the retelling that it was Persephone's choice of going to the underworld and choosing to stay with Hades, but you also saw her caring side when she had to go take care of her people from her mom. Overall fun story, fast-paced, easy read.
So I got an ARC of this book and I was so excited for a new retelling of Hades & Persephone, with some spice added in. Let me tell you, this book did not disappoint!! First of all, it was not just some spice, this book was VERY spicy- and extremely well done. I love a spicy moment in my books, but I often get pulled out when authors use weird turns of phrase like "member" or "slit" or "my sex" instead of just saying what it is or using more colloquial phrases. January Foxx writes spice and spicy dialogue like I would describe it (except a hundred times better because I'm no writer). I also love the way she portrays kink and BDSM- it's talked about and portrayed in such a normalized manner, instead of scandalizing it. Another pleasant surprise was the way she modernized and incorporated the rest of the myth retelling. When I was finished with this book, I wanted more of this world, these characters! I would love to know more about how the gods and goddesses of myth exist in this world. Also, I wanted more of the main characters- but they're some of my favorites. I would definitely recommend this book.
I love a good Hades and Persephone retelling! This retelling did not disappoint! I love how Persephone was made into a hero unlike most retellings I’ve read. I read this in one sitting which is safe to say I couldn’t put it down!
Honestly had a hard time finishing this not because of the spice but because there wasn't much development at all. The use of the words such as dudebro during a sex scene made it hard for me to finish this book overall, it changed the tone of the scene and overall book in all honesty for me at least.
First and foremost, thank you to January Foxx for providing an ARC of this book! I absolutely DEVOURED it.
This is an incredibly spicy modernized retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone, filled with touching romance, witty humor, complex mother-daughter relations, BDSM, and cleverly layered in statements regarding society today in relation to farming and large corporations told through the tale of the overarching myth.
As I enter my final semester of college, I’ve undertaken the task to write a thesis for my second major around the modern fascination with the story of Hades & Persephone, which involves a lot of research and reading. It is clear throughout this story that the author has put in a lot of research as well, tucked away cleverly in small details. My favorite is the birth control having pomegranate in it, as that was an ancient form of BC used in antiquity. But there were also other creative twists to these well known characters and myths that I adored as well from Adonis and Cerberus, and Juno to Hermes to Dionysus. I found each deity’s modernization and characterization refreshing and yet, what I could also see being realistic if set in today’s time. And for other well-known characters and side-mythical tales incorporated, without spoiling, highly creative and inventive.
Now I will say, this book is not for the weak spice-minded. There is a lot of spice. Had I ever thought about Hades’s bedroom much before this book? Not really. Did I ever imagine the King of the Underworld with a wall of toys by his bedside? Not until I finished this book.
However, the spice is well-balanced with tender moments between our characters and fueled by young adult rage and growth in becoming one’s self and defying what the world says you should be. I was rooting for Persephone from start to finish, perhaps in many ways, but ultimately in her journey of autonomy and growth as an independent woman. As a princess into a queen.
What an enjoyable and fast-paced read! Thank you again January Foxx for giving me the honor of an ARC.
I'm not entirely sure *what* I expected going into this book, maybe a timid, scared Persephone? Or a cold, ruthless Hades? But neither of those were what I was met with. Persephone is confident in what she wants, despite being a little nervous to take it while Hades is in awe of Persephone and wants to invite her into his world as he does with everyone he invites over the river. This story is fast, spicy, and a VERY modern retelling of Hades and Persephone's love. I ADORED it!!!
Persephone is raw and genuine in her dislike of expectations and Hades is caring and adamant in his release of inhibitions. The spice in this book is intense, but top-notch. It shows how much love can be put into a BDSM agreement and how freeing one can be. I love Hades and Persephone's relationship. There's a power dynamic in the bedroom, but outside of the bedroom they're equals. Hades takes Persephone's advice and cares for her wellbeing out of love. Persephone is not a star struck or obsessed child, she's a woman with desires and needs that she advocates for, ones that Hades listens to and does everything in his power to grant.
Other than the main characters' relationship, I loved seeing all of the gods' roles reimagined. Demeter was the most interesting since it had the same themes as the usual portrails of her, but completely spun it to see a new side I could've never imagined. Juno, Hermes, and Adonis were all modernized to fit within the world and I was OBSESSED with their place in it. Every god was interesting to meet and essentially relearn about as the core of who they were was retained, but the ways in which they showed that core were changed.
Overall, this book was an addictive read. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars, was I was hoping for a grand spicy ending that didn't happen. I love the ending anyway, I just wish we got to see Hades and Persephone visit the Atrium one more time.
If you love intense spicy romance, BDSM, or retellings of greek mythology, read this book! It's new, refreshing, and addictive! I have never seen exhibitionism done so well and I can't wait to read more of January Foxx's books in the future!
* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is 100% my own opinion
Thank you to the author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Persephone has been the "good girl" all her life. When she receives a mysterious gold coin that will provide her with transport across the river Styx, she decides to take a risk and find out if the rumors about the wild parties in Hades' palace are true. Hades offers Persephone a deal to help her shed her inhibitions and become the woman she's always wanted to be. But as what started as lust turns to something more, Persephone must decide how her story will be told.
I read this book in a single evening; I could not put it down! It is an incredibly spicy and very well-done retelling of the Hades and Persephone story. There is a lot of spice out of the gate, but plenty of plot and romance to keep you interested. If you enjoyed Neon Gods and want even more spice, this one is for you. I also loved all the mythology references the author included. It was fun for me to find them, especially the less well-known stories. If you like spicy books, you must pick this one up!

***ARC Reader
This book was such a fun and quick read! While there's not really any world building or major plot, I loved all the nods to the characters and themes from the original mythology. It was fascinating to journey with Persephone as she comes into her sexuality and finds freedom in the kink community, specifically in her submissive role with Hades.
The wild scenes were great but it was the sweet tender moments in between that really made me invested in the relationship and their love story as a whole. I also loved seeing the emphasis on aftercare and communication, so even the spicier scenes felt like a very honest representation without complete depravity; a feat not every author can achieve successfully.
My biggest critique (and ultimately a personal preference) is that I wish there was more buildup to their meeting. There were flashback explanations but I think I would have preferred a more sequential timeline to help solidify the immediate/inexplicable pull each character had for each other.
TLDR: it's a super easy read with Grade A spice from the start! Definitely a great introduction for those interested in dark romance or BDSM.
This dark and decadent Hades x Persephone retelling pulls you into the sultry and delicious underworld right from the start. True to its description, it’s a steamy, erotic reimagining of the myth that doesn’t hold back on the spice—seriously, this book is spicy AF. While it leans more into the heat than the plot at times, I didn’t mind because the banter throughout was chef’s kiss.
What truly stood out was Persephone’s personal journey. Watching her embrace her desires and unapologetically claim the life she wants, rather than the one others have mapped out for her, was empowering. She’s bold, daring, and owns her choices in a way that feels authentic.
And let’s talk about that scene with Cerberus—WHEW! I was gasping for air and wiping the sweat off my forehead. January Foxx knows how to turn up the heat in ways that will leave you blushing.
The story is packed with tropes I love—dark romance, forbidden attraction, and an irresistible “villain” who is more layered than he appears. It’s an exploration of power, passion, and finding your voice in a world that seeks to define you.
If you’re looking for a plot-driven epic, this might not scratch that itch, but if you’re in the mood for something steamy, bold, and indulgent, Styx & Stones delivers in spades. A solid 4-star read that’s perfect for fans of seductive mythological retellings.
**********************A.R.C. Reader *********************** 4.5/5⭐️ and 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 Is this book plot heavy? No. Is it delicious and worth a read? Absolutely. I think I can count on one hand the number of chapters where we aren’t getting clear and explicit open door scenes and I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve read a few retellings and I can definitely say this one was a treat.
The half star it’s missing for me is the overall lack of depth to the plot in that the story itself feels short but I didn’t mind as much with the sheer amount of detail the scenes go into.
My only complaint is I don’t have friends irl that can handle this level of smut. I know, it’s not the books fault but still. I want anyone who has an open mind, loves open door scenes (and a lot of them) to go ahead and give it a read.
If you had to be a good girl at any point in your life live vicariously through Persephone and sacrifice that mindset go for so much more.
HOLYYYYYYYYY WOW. WOW WOW WOW. This is - hands down - the spiciest book I may have ever read. And I'm a certified sm*t sl*t.
A darker, sexier expression of the Hades and Persephone mythos. Our good girl FMC is tired of being good, and finds herself in the Underworld in front of our incredibly hot God of Death. Yes, Hades owns a club. Yes, that kind of club. Our not-so-innocent girlie consents to experiment and trust our shadow daddy to walk her through her deepest desires - and even some she didn't know were desires. There's some MF/MMF/MMMMF/MFFFF (I'm losing track of acronyms here but you get the idea).
This is more than just a sexy story - the plot balances perfectly between steam, spice, and myth. Demeter is still an overbearing, pain in the a** mom. Persephone battles with duty and desire both in the Underworld and Olympus. Hades is... perfect.
If you're a fan of mythology and sexy reads like Neon Gods or A Touch of Darkness - add this to your TBR immediately.
I received an advance copy of this book and am enthusiastically sharing my review.
I received this story as ARC and can I say it is one of the spiciest ARCs that I've read so far.
Hades as a dom, Persephone as a submissive, this story hits the spicey spice from page 1. I mean we hit is hot and heavy for the first half of this story, have a small cooling period as the plot developed to return to a satisfying climax at the end.
For those familiar with the Hades/Persephone story, this take falls in line with the general story line while adding a modern twist in using our modern day agricultural system and needs. Although this story focuses mainly on the beginning of the Hades/Persephone relationship, it is entertaining even without providing the full mythological storyline.

Thank you January Jones for the arc of Styx and Stones in exchange for my honest review.
⭐️⭐️💫 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Styx and Stones is a modern Hades & Persephone (very) spicy romance. The book was entertaining and fast paced. My issues came with its plot format. The book begins very much so as an erotica novel… but then the last 25% ends in a storyline. It was a little jarring to completely switch gears at that point.
My other issue… the instalove… it didn’t feel sincere. While Hades & Persephone definitely had chemistry, in my opinion, there wasn’t enough background to build-up their relationship to the “soulmates” love story. It definitely was more lust than love.
Overall, this is a fast paced, easy spicy romance… but it ultimately fell a little flat for me.

Whew 😅 when I first heard of this book I knew there would be spice but I did not think we would be jumping into it so fast, not that I am complaining . The spice was 5/5 🌶️, some things I was caught off guard with but it did not disappoint. Overall I think this was a pretty solid read. I love where Hades and Persephone started to what they became. Please consider this as a read when it comes out be prepared for alot of spicy when it says it’s an erotic underworld romance, be prepared. Just a snippet to make your heart flutter Hades said, “ when you smiled at me, I had the sudden urge to give you everything. The moon, the stars. Things that aren’t even mine to give. “ 🥰🥹 ahhh. 10/10. Go read when available!
I was nervous to read this book, as I’m not very familiar with Greek mythology. The blurb was captivating, but I was concerned that my lack of interest in the subject might hinder my enjoyment.
It didn’t!
From the moment Hades and Persephone cross paths, their dynamic feels genuine and engaging. The chemistry between them escalated quickly, and I found myself thoroughly gripped by their connection. Oh, and when I say quickly I mean QUICKLY, and oh my Hades is it HOT!!
I would have liked a bit more plot development at the beginning before diving into the fun dynamics. Fortunately, the story does pick up in the middle, and it’s well-written. The vibes, character development, and actions are described effectively, which kept me locked throughout. Overall, I truly enjoyed the reading experience.
“You’re beautiful,” he murmurs. “Like stepping outside after a long winter and realizing it’s spring.”
This was the BEST Hades and Persephone retelling I’ve read and I do love a good retelling of these two.
When Persephone finds herself with a coin that pays her passage on the ferry across the river Styx in her drink at a bar she can’t resist the temptation to attend a Hades party. Little does she know her whole life will change that night as she finds the God of the Underworld all alone in the Library and strikes a bargain with him.
I love this version of Persephone! When Hades asked why she came to the party, she answers “I’m tired of being good,” and she learns how much she likes being bad while being “a good girl.” Hades helps her find her own confidence and she’s her what she’s capable of. She’s a strong female character who decides to stand up for herself and take down “the real villain” to try to get her happy ending.
Hades was fantastic and almost exactly as I’d imagine he would be if I’d want him as a lover. He was dominant and possessive, but still wanted to show her she was in control of herself and she was stronger than she thought. He opened up a whole new world for her to explore with kink parties, light bondage, an orgy where she was fulfilled completely, and a sacrifice of herself to him on an altar in front of a crowd. He gave her courage and kept her safe. He loved her from the start.
This was such a good, filthy book! I loved every minute! Be sure to check the triggers first!!
Thank you January Foxx for the chance to ARC read Styx and Stones!! 🖤
I've been eagerly awaiting this book for a while now and wow did it deliver!
One of my fave obscure tropes is Hades x Persephone, but a lot of the time the romance ends up being very sweet. It was refreshing to read this novel, where Hades lives up to his dark God side, and is a hell (see what I did there xD) of a lot more spicier! Don't get me wrong - he is still portrayed as very respectful, kind, but the spice scenes (I'm being careful how I phrase things for instagram!), are out of this world flames! And I devoured it!
Although the spice scenes are the main focus of the novel, there was an underlying plot, and I loved how the author left little greek mythology easter eggs! I found it fun trying to see how many I could find in the read (and there was quite a few!). They're very subtly placed, which I thought was particularly clever.
It definately deserves its title of erotic underworld romance, and I'd really encourage anyone who is a fan of the pairing but wants to have a bit more spice in their read, to pick up this book!
