Bottom of the Breath: A Novel

Rate this book
For fans of Liane Moriarty and Maria Semple, this contemporary debut novel weaves together romance, mystery, and adventure as a woman travels to the Grand Canyon seeking answers after uncovering an old family secret.

After crashing into a devastating revelation, Cyd’s tranquil life on the Florida panhandle is further upended when she receives a letter announcing an inheritance from an estranged aunt. The inheritance contains mysterious “items of a personal nature” which Cyd must collect in person halfway across the country. In a last attempt to salvage her deteriorating marriage, Cyd agrees to travel with her husband on what he promises—and she questions—will be the trip of a lifetime.

As they set out, a hurricane threatens their hometown. Soon, fueled by the growing threat of the storm and the tension brewing between them, the couple’s long-suppressed problems erupt. Cyd digs deep for the courage to continue the journey on her own, unsure if either her home or her marriage will survive.

Once in Phoenix, Cyd learns the strange details of the inheritance and a decades-old family secret. But what was the whole truth? Clues and instinct lead Cyd to Sedona and then to the Grand Canyon. She descends into the vast chasm alone searching for answers to newly raised questions and age-old mysteries. She steps off the beaten path, literally, knowing she must make peace with her pain-filled past and her uncertain future.

“Mills’s efficient prose sketches an entirely believable landscape in Cyd’s mind, roiling with confusion over the breakdown of her marriage and the shocking revelations about her family. “I absolutely loved this novel. The way Mills paints each scene with such vivid imagery made me feel like I was hiking through the Grand Canyon along side Cyd. The story balanced so many emotions at once. It was heartbreaking, and hopeful, contemplative, but never felt weighed down. It was incredibly real and every part was very intentional. Many things resonated with me and I cried a few times! Honestly, it was such a wonderful read.”–@JWfullspeed (Audible account), five stars

“What a wonderful surprise. Ms Mills claims to have written her debut novel. This makes me believe that we all had a previous life. She must have been an award winning novelist in her previous life. Every thing you want in a refreshing novel. It seems I was reading the last third at record speed to find the ending story with Cyd and Bobby. I’ll look for her next one.”–@Flyfisher, five star Amazon review

If you are like me and love to read debut novels, then let me introduce you to a new author named Jayne Mills and her wonderful new book Bottom of the Breath. I was not able to put this book down. It held my interest and had me doing some research on my own. That is a great book and I think this one will be winning some awards for Ms. Mills.

The main character is Cyd. Her life has been turned upside down. She receives a letter while in the hospital that she has inherited the remains of her Aunt’s estate. She lives in the panhandle of Florida and there is a hurricane bearing down on the Gulf side of the state. I don’t want to tell you more because a lot is told to you in the synopsis. Anymore than that will spoil the book for you.

Cyd is into numerology and I had to check the discussion about your life number, figuring out my own number and seeing what it said about me. It was amazingly spot on. Don’t forget to do that! Even if you don’t believe in numerology, it is just fun to see what it tells you about yourself.

Cyd winds up visiting the Grand Canyon and I absolutely enjoyed her experiences there and the descriptions of the area were magnificent. The descriptions in this book are very interesting and she makes you feel like you have been there or actually makes you want to go there on your own.

I loved this book for the new things that it taught me. I enjoyed the story line and was involved with Cyd and what was happening to her and wondering how her life was going to turn out. The other characters were a good support except for one in particular. That would be her husband. I didn’t like him. You’ll see for yourself. There were times I was talking out loud to him. He is not a wise man.

If you love a book that makes you want to travel, learn new things and bring out your feelings, then this book is one that should be on your radar. It actually should be on your nightstand waiting for you at the end of the day. Until next time…Happy Reading!

This was such an inspiring, yet hard (at times) read. The author wrote such a detailed, graphic story that the reader felt like they were preparing for a hurricane, experiencing the anxiety on the airplane and seeing the stars while sleeping in the grand canyon. I felt like I was a true part of the story. This was the first book by this author, and I hope that it won't be the last, she instantly became a release day purchase for me!!

I loved the way that the author connected the yoga, the breathing and the cycles of this and life together. I admit that I was skeptical of the title, loved the cover and synopsis but worried that the story wouldn't be as good as it was...but I am so glad that I am able to say that I was wrong!! This story flowed, it held the reader's attention and it encouraged them to think about their own life and path to ensure that it is one that makes them happy.

I enjoyed the character's, their flaws, their friendships and the way that they all helped one another. I loved the writing style, the smooth flow of the story and the fact that the reader didn't want to stop reading it at any point. This one is a must read and a must read now. Add it to your TBR list and move it to the top - it is worth skipping some of the others to get to this one! One of my favorites of the summer.

The synopsis of this book grabbed my attention and I was excited at the opportunity to read this debut novel by Jayne Mills. Unfortunately, I was disappointed once I started reading the book. The character development was lacking. And it seemed to take too long to accomplish anything. I do feel like the book had promise and would encourage Jayne Mills to continue her pursuit as an author. There were several very positive reviews, so I would encourage you to give it a try and see if it appeals to you.

Thank you to the author for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Bottom of the Breath is an emotionally rich and atmospheric novel that skillfully blends mystery, adventure, and personal transformation into a compelling journey of self-discovery. Jayne Mills creates a deeply human story about grief, fractured relationships, buried family truths, and the courage it takes to confront both the past and the unknown.

What makes this novel especially engaging is the way the emotional and physical journeys mirror one another. As Cyd travels farther from the fragile life she once knew, the story steadily peels back layers of pain, uncertainty, and hidden history. The mounting tension surrounding her marriage, combined with the looming threat of a hurricane, creates an undercurrent of urgency that keeps the narrative emotionally charged throughout.

I was particularly struck by the vivid sense of place woven into the novel. From the Florida panhandle to Sedona and the Grand Canyon, the landscapes feel immersive and symbolic, reflecting Cyd’s internal struggle and search for clarity. The mystery surrounding the inheritance and long-buried family secret adds intrigue, while the emotional depth of Cyd’s journey gives the story lasting resonance.

At its heart, Bottom of the Breath is about resilience, healing, and learning to move forward after life unexpectedly unravels. Thoughtful, adventurous, and emotionally compelling, this novel will resonate strongly with readers who appreciate character driven fiction filled with mystery, introspection, and emotional growth.

This was a lovely and easy read — once I started the story, it was hard to put it down. The underlying lessons from yoga and breathwork lead the book along, and Cyd's journey to build her future while learning her past felt relatable and inspiring. And of course, the magic of the Grand Canyon is another character here. I felt transported back to my own experience at the Grand Canyon and the profound wisdom it imparts to each person.

Bottom of the Breath was not what I expected at all, in the best way possible. What started out as the main character's reaction to a marital betrayal turned into a self-introspective quest to really figure out who she is, the relationships in her life and what she values above all. Cyd, the protagonist, is so likable, that I found myself rooting for her at every step of her journey. A rich read.

Bottom of the Breath is a wonderful read – a powerful story of family and relationships with all the blemishes and complications that come with them. Betrayal, resilience, deep introspection – Cyd, the protagonist, lives it all. I love Cyd! She is a true heroine in her own life. Well written with beautiful descriptions of the Grand Canyon and with an ending that doesn’t disappoint. A must read!
