This is a wonderful biographical love story between Fran, the author, and Barney Myer, and their years together after being matched up as mixed doubles partners for a pickleball tournament during the early years of the sport. Written from the point of view of Fran, the book details part of the origination story of the game of pickleball and her and Barney's roles in its development and so much more. She lays out the highlights of Barney's life and the expression of that life from building a school named after him in Paypa, Peru, to his remarkable skills at tiling everything (including their garage!), and coping with the debilitating diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) as a couple. When one starts playing pickleball, no matter why you got on the courts, anything can happen. So in life. Anyone who loves and/or is a caregiver for someone suffering from any type of debilitating health issue can gain some creative insights about how to cope, love, and care for someone. Little gems pop up in the matter-of-fact writing style. Some you may not even realize until you've finished the book. Barney's artistic skills set the stage for the mystical appearances of a hummingbird in places you may not quite expect one. And if you were to meet Fran I know she would tell you to give pickleball a try.
