This book was a gift for our 10 year old who is obsessed with speculative biology and world building. First, the book itself is lovely; the printing, cover art and gold edges make it look like a little treasure. The story is engaging and the illustrations are wonderful. He has read it through at least 4 times and trained his younger brothers to sing the shanty song from the end of part one. My favorite part personally was the addition of the "field guide" tucked into the story - those illustrations are gorgeous. We are all hoping this is expanded into a series at some point.
(Disclaimer that there is quite a bit of mild swearing for parents who screen for that but nothing worse than what he hears his mom say)
