*A Wolf For Winter is a standalone novel within the Homesteader Hearth Witch universe. You need not have read the series to enjoy this steamy holiday romance filled with magic, suspense, and, of course, all the carbs.*
Could forbidden love be her path to freedom?
Lilac Hawthorne has been forced to do her grandmother’s bidding since before she could walk, let alone perform her first spell. Until now. With the coven away on business, she and her siblings are put in charge of the Yuletide Gala, which is much more than hanging mistletoe and spiking the eggnog. This is the time when alliances are renewed, enemies seize the advantage of the matriarch’s absence, and for Lilac, the chance to finally break free of her grandmother’s iron reign and follow her heart…
…straight into the arms of a wolf.
Ex-Green Beret and lone wolf shifter, Allen Chase only accepted this babysitting mission to push his resumé to the top of the Coalition’s application pile. His task is simple—hide in plain sight, protect the witches, and definitely not fall for one of them. Their kind is forbidden to someone like him, after all. Yet as constant attacks bring Allen and Lilac closer together, their attraction proves undeniable. Inevitable. Fated. Lilac is everything he never knew he wanted, and with her enemies closing in, he’ll do anything to protect her. Including sacrificing her trust. Is he strong enough to break his own heart to set the woman he loves free?

Delightful novella taking place at the same time as book seven in the Homesteader Hearth Witch.
It was so much to get to know some of the Hawthornes better. Lilac gained so much character in this story besides being the honeytrap of the family and I really liked her dynamic with siblings Boar and Rose. Allen- my heart! I thought Llewelyn was one of my fav but nope, little brother Allen took his place. Excited to see where they will go.
Laughed at the author’s note that this one contained no cliffhangers!
Perfect set up for the future books with Meadow and family! Cannot wait.
I received an ARC of this book (thanks!) and these are my own opinions.
This was such a FUN book! I couldn’t wait for release day and was so excited to score an ARC to read it early. This is a standalone spinoff from her Homesteader Hearth Witch series which I absolutely devoured, but you don’t have to read it first. (But you really should go read it because it’s amazing). This book was a delight, perfect seasonal cozy fantasy. Bodyguard/forbidden romance, soulmates, bickering siblings, witchy magic and holiday magic, and an actual plot so while it’s cozy and fun it still keeps your interest and is also not entirely fluff. A little bit of spice, plenty of romance and lots of fun, I definitely loved it. In my dreams the author will give a spin-off for all the siblings/cousins along with completing the original series, because I will read them forever and ever.
Ill wishes are being left like little malicious gifts in anticipation of the Yuletide Gala. The Hawthorne Manor caretaker has been taken out of the picture and replaced with a shift, Allen Chase!
Can the power of three pull through the malice of the season and prove to themselves and their family that they are more than just their namesake. 💚
Lilac has kept her distance from Allen from the start but she can’t deny the pull. What will happen as they spend more time with one another? 🐺
This is a cute standalone within the Homesteader Hearth Witch series that focuses on Lilac Hawthorne. I loved seeing Lilac come into her own and the realization with her feelings. It was also great to learn little tidbits that draw connections to characters already met in the HHW series. I hope we get to see more of these mixed throughout.
Thank you to author, Kat Healy, and BookSprout for the opportunity to read this book. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Now it goes without saying that Kat Healey not only knows how to spin a tale, but that she does with both grace and aplomb. I tip my hat to you, Ms Healey. Well done, indeed.
Now please get the fact that I’m a GUY… just your regular leaves the toilet seat up, laughs at fart jokes, kind’a guy, and I CERTAINLY don’t read romances. Or at least I didn’t. But then an entirely different author exposed me to the fact that some if not a LOT of the literature out there which is classed as romance is really just very good literature in which a romantic interest is but ONE of the plot elements. And thus I hav me been compelled to expand my reading criteria, rather unwillingly at first, might I add. But I crossed paths with Kat Healey in another series she has penned in which romance was but a minor subplot, and came to LOVE her writing.
This author KNOWS how to tell a tale! Moreover, she KNOWS how to build suspense, she KNOWS how to use dialogue to provide all the necessary subtext without ever stating it explicitly, and she KNOWS how to then explain that subtext for those who missed it without it feeling like she’s repeating the same info over and over again just to up her word count.
The interplay between the characters is just flawlessly written. One of my favorite passages is this:
“You think that was good enough to merit you a next time?” she challenged. Spirits above, he loved how proud and feisty she could be. She gave him that imperious arch of her eyebrow, the effect somewhat lessened from the absolute and delicious wreck she looked. “Oh my sweet girl,” he replied. “The moment you screamed my name, you guaranteed it.”
All of this led me, that stereotypical guy described above to getting utterly hooked on the primary series of which this tale is a spinoff. AND IT’S A ROMANCE! A slow-burn romance (and I’m embarrassed I’ve learned the term, LMAO), to be sure, but still … you get the point: It’s just that good, and this story actually outstrips the mainline in the quality of Kat’s writing. This is some of her best that I’ve read. So grab it, devour it (bad pun) and Enjoy!!!!
A great standalone book with a worldly basis in the Hearthsteas series begun with “A Problem with Pixies”. In this book, we follow 3 of the young Hawthorne witches, out on their own to fulfill a traditional season in the local village whilst the rest of their coven are busy in the main series. Boar, the brother, in charge, showing a confident and controlled face but inwardly terrified. Rose, the slightly mischievous sister, will make sure she does her part but is also looking for a Spring Fling. Lilac, the sister who was designated to be the beautiful one by their grandmother. Lilac is determined to use this trip away from the family to find her own path, become independent and step away from all of those blasted men who keep following her around. Allen Sharpe (aka Allen Chase) is not just any werewolf but a Nemean werewolf, a loner desperately hunting for company, pack mates, love.
Everyone knows the Hawthornes hate shifters, but when Allen faces imprisonment and cannot find company, he takes an offered job to guard them. It was supposed to be a long-distance assignment but then the house-elf is attacked and suddenly he’s their “human” caretaker, whose job it is to protect the hall and all of the Hawthornes. And they need protecting!
Trigger warnings: familial rejection, brief mention of war and mass casualty events. Oh and an explicit scene just in case you need that warning too!
Lilac Hawthorne has always been under her grandmother Iris’ thumb, doing everything she was told. But things are different this time when the powerful coven has gone elsewhere on important business and left Lilac and her siblings Boar and Rose, to handle whatever comes up. They will be responsible for the Yuletide Gala emphasizing renewed alliances, which makes it a bit more dangerous as enemies take advantage of the coven’s absence and the perceived weakness of the less experienced witches.
A lone wolf shifter, former Green Beret, Allen Chase is given an offer by the Coalition, a supernatural peace-keeping force whose mission was to protect the weak from all who preyed upon them. They want him to handle a protection detail and become bodyguard to the young Hawthorne witches who were brought up to despise shifters. He was never meant to fall for one of them, however. But he is kept busy with the continuous attacks which only seem to attract him even more to Lilac… his mate! But to keep her safe, he may have to give her up. Will his plan work? Or will she stubbornly see through it and remain alongside him to the end?
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
3.5*
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I had just finished #7 in the series when this book popped up. It happens to fit right in between #7 and the final book, # 8, in the series. This was a great story
BTW, I could have done without the detailed sex scene.

Great side story in the homesteader hearth witch world
I really enjoyed getting to have lilac’s story told, as well as to tie in with other characters from the Homesteader hearth witch series. This book was just as entertaining for me as the other books in the series, and this one included some spice, which I appreciated and was well done. It was a great read, definitely recommend it. Also a great way to help tide myself over while I wait for the eighth book of the hearth witch series to come out.
Part of the Homesteader Hearth Witch. Lilac Hawthorne and Ex-Green Beret and lone wolf shifter, Allen Chase who has been hired to keep her and other witches safe. Their story has drama, danger, suspense, siblings Boar and Rose, the Yuletide Gala and romance between enemies. I found the story to be well worth reading. This is a new Author to me. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
We find out what's been happening back with the rest of the coven while the elders are chasing after Meadow. Lilac and Allen's story is so much spicier than the main series and I loved how their relationship developed. It can be read as a standalone but I appreciated the plot more having already read some of Meadow's story.

A really great story that’s related to the author’s Homesteader Hearth Witch series. This steamy holiday romance is as well written and created as every book I read from Kat Healy yet. Although this one took me some time to dive into the story it made up for it very soon. A great paranormal novel I highly recommend reading.

A Wolf for Winter is related to the Homesteader Hearth Witch series by Kat Healy. It’s a sweet, steamy, holiday romance with Allen Chase a bodyguard and Lilac Hawthorne a witch under her grandmother's thumb is a rivals-to-lovers, paranormal story. I really liked how the author slowly built up the relationship between the couple, very well-written story.

When Lilac and her siblings are left to run the Yuletide Gala because the rest of the family is on other business, they face a lot of responsibility. Allen had a mission but ends up serving dual roles as he is called to guard the three. The Hawthorne matriarch has taught them to avoid shifters and Allen is not trusting of witches. Of course, there are sparks. This was a lovely romance with intrigue and suspense.
I love this side story of Meadows family. Lilac Hawthorne and Allen Chase (Llewellyn's brother?!) this is everything I wanted in my cozy holiday romantasy season. Magic? check! Forbidden Romance? check! Shape Shifter? Check!! A girl becoming a strong independent woman and sticking it to her controlling family?! CHECK!! a brilliant read really.

This is the perfect holiday weekend read! Hallmark eat your heart out! Actually, honestly if Hallmark or Netflix picked this up as a holiday movie I would INHALE it! Lilac and Allen are an amazing set of main characters and as always the side characters are so well written that you become absorbed in the world!
This was the most adorable story! I've read the whole Homesteader Hearth Witch series (so far) and so it was incredibly fun to meet some of the side characters from that series and get to know them better. And the steaminess of the romance was absolutely perfect! The writing in this spinoff story was so well done. Another hit for Kat Healy!!
Kat’s ability to create magical worlds and wonderful characters is complimented by her writing which makes it easy to forget I’m reading words and get completely lost in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
Once again, Kat Healy has written a tale wreathing through with a super-strength power - both of magic, and of love!
This side story, taking place in the Homesteader Hearth Witch series, is wonderfully told, giving us readers, who fell in love with Kat's World, yet another glimpse at some of Meadow Hawthorne's relatives - in this case, focused on Lilac, the Cousin who had been more like her sister, and who had betrayed her many years before.
It was utterly fascinating to learn the how and why behind their rivalry, and to learn who Lilac truly is, and I absolutely devoured this book, as it told the tale of Lilac Hawthorn, and the Shifter, Allan Chase, younger brother of the Shifter, Llewellyn Chase, who took part in Meadow's story.
I am really loving this series, and hope to see more side stories, involving other characters within Meadow's life, especially if they are of this same quality of writing but, in the meantime, I truly am looking forward to the next book telling us of Meadow and her life, in Book Eight of the HHW series: 'The Filigree Key', which is slated to be published on 23rd March, this year.
So, while I wait, I'll be dipping into my Kindle, and will be reading some of the many books I have there, while I wait.
I'm going to be starting on a series co-written by Daniel Wilcox and Michael Anderle, called: 'The Caitlin Chronicles', which is a part of The Kurtherian Universe.
Book One is called: 'Dawn of Chaos' and, once I've finished this, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

It's Saturday, 15th February, 2025, and I've just finished re-reading this wonderful side tale, featuring Lilac Hawthorne and Allen Chase.
The reason for the re-read, was to discover all the food and drink mentioned in these great stories, as Kat Healy will be releasing a Cookbook based on the Homesteader Hearth Witch series, around Alls Halloween Eve, & there are plenty of we Avid fans, waiting to purchase a copy, as the food has had my mouth watering, vat the descriptions! Lol
I'm very sad that I've run out of these books to read, as Book Eight of this series; 'A Filigree Key', won't be published until 28th March, so I'll have to look through my many thousands of books, to see which one I'll be reading next.
I think I'll go for Jenna Myles' series: The Brash Brothers, with Book One: 'Kade', beginning the stories of men and women coping with the down side of life, but getting through it, to find their not-so-perfect, but perfect for them, other halves!
Once I've finished this, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

it's now Monday, 28th April, 2025, & I've just finished my 3rd read of this wonderful book.
This time, I read the recently released Book 8: 'A Filigree Key', before this one, as it was my first read, and I wanted the storyline to continue seamlessly.
I loved that book too, and am now waiting for the release of the final book of this series: Book 9: '' Twisting Twilight' but, as that won't be for a few months, yet, I guess I should go back to the set of series that I was reading, before getting caught up, once again, in Kat Healy's brilliant storyline! lol
So, I'm going back to Renee Jagger and Michael Anderle's series, called: Para-Military Recruiter, to Book 1: 'Drafted'!
This is a completely new series for me, so I'm looking forward to reading it so, once I have done, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I thought about it!
If it's anything like Renee's previous series, I think it will be great! lol
