Alpha Dragons #2

Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon

Rate this book
I’m being sold to dragon-country to be forcibly mated. Please tell me it’s all just a bad dream.

Akai is a set-omega, which means he has no inner beast and cannot shift. Considered worthless by his wolf pack, and with no individual rights, he is sold into slavery along with other set-omegas as they come of age.

He is purchased in a flurry of paperwork by Danon, a man with a white beard so thick and bristly, he looks like some sort of old craggy beast.

But things aren’t as they seem. Despite his fears, Akai is strangely drawn to Danon, who is standoffish but still polite, and in only a few days he finds himself entering his first heat.

This is book 2 of the Alpha Dragons series. All books in this series are standalone reads.

Contemporary omegaverse, alpha/omega, dragon shifter, mpreg/eggpreg, omega heat, knotting, opposites attract, age gap, size difference. This is a sold-into-brood-slavery tale turned romance where everything is consensual with a terribly sweet HEA.

This boy was mine. This set-omega was not a slave. He was my mate.

Another super sweet & cute omegaverse romance, just like Omega Captive of the Alpha Dragon. Despite the slavery/forced marriage premise, this read was a cuddly, fluffy and smutty time.

Not much plot or character building going on, but still fun nonetheless. I looooved Danon’s dragon, such a cute twist to the story.

“Never in a million years did I think I’d come to dragon country and meet my true mate who would free me.”

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

3 - 3.5

This installment was more interesting than the previous one - had better main characters and there was some more substance to the story, but yet again I found myself bored, amused, interested and feeling awkward at the same time.

Main characters are a bit more fleshed out this time, the love story's warm and simple, but it doesn't deliver that cherry on top that would make this a really good omegaverse book.

🟢 Omegaverse
🟣 Alpha dragon entrepreneur/feisty wolf Omega
🔵 Age gap 18/42
🟠 Mpreg
🟡 Size difference
🟢 Main characters completely not interested in anything with each other, but help each other during the heat/rut
🟣 Chemistry more palpable than in first installment and
🟡 Many of the same elements used, same turn of events
🔵 Omega gets freed, gets married
🌶️ Smut better in this one; more of it, rimming, penetrative, oral; t/b

Here we get a different wolf pack and another dragon society with completely different rules for their dragons and even though I'm at this point completely turned off by the 18 year old "young, ripe, virgin Omegas", this story was still a tad better than the first one.

It has a big age gap that isn't that inviting - it's what you see in many MF romances where the female turns 18 and then she's already a woman, ready for the world while in reality an 18 year old person is just a kid and put him with a 42-year old guy in a marriage (not just a hook-up but an actual contract for life) and make him pregnant in the first week of being together, well

But let's say for the sake of the story that it's just how it's done, the set-omegas have a terrible fate and Akai was very lucky to stumble onto Danon, who's an older dragon that feels like an outkast himself, he's subservient to his dragon lord and has to do as he's told, even though he's wealthy, he can't decide on his own.
Basically he's a small pink dragon that puffs fireflies and purrs instead of roars, so that was all very endearing to me, not to mention him being the perfect husband to Akai and he was very much aware of the age gap and wasn't too fond of it.

So, in that respect the age gap was addressed and Danon really was a charming, protective mature dragon that cared deeply for Akai.

"He gave off a safe, relaxed feeling. I had told him he didn’t need to caretake me anymore, but he was doing it naturally. Maybe he didn’t even know it. What a fluke that the guy behind the bushy whiskers turned out to be the prince in hiding of my fantasies."

That being said, the story had absolutely boring dialogues, the only interesting thing was the smut part, that was where Akai and Danon really shined through, the rest of it wasn't that good. The storytelling could do with a bit more work, I find I do like the characters and the setting every time, it's just everything else that isn't that well done.

A nice pairing, just the story wasn't that well developed. I can't put my finger on what's missing, it's just not that good. The sex scenes could've been more plentiful considering it's what the author's good at writing, so more passion, more intimacy, more interesting and fully developed plots and subplots and this'll get much better.

This was a surprisingly cozy shifter romance given the subject matter, and I enjoyed every moment. I read this without having read the first, and I can safely say it’s a standalone, but I enjoyed it so much I’ll be going back to read the first one. The book has some serious subject matter, but the author does a wonderful job of keeping the cozy vibe throughout!

Neither Akai nor Danon wanted the arranged mating, and both have trauma, but the way they both heal and help each other while falling was a true delight to follow. The chemistry between the two was sizzling!

I can’t wait for the next book, but in the meantime, I’m going back to read the first!

I got this and read it in the same day. This was sad but oh so lovely. Akai is a spitfire but and let it known that he is not happy about the way he and others are treated due to their classification. Fate played a hand in him getting matched to the moody "mean" old dragon Danon. Of course it was a little awkward in the beginning but these two found a way to live, trust and finally fall in love with each other. LOVED it from start to end. Their HEA was sweet ...can't wait to read more in this series.

Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon is the second book in the Alpha Dragons series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the rest of the series. This is the story of Akai a set-omega and Danon an alpha dragon shifter. Akai is sold as a slave breeder because he is a set-omega which means he has no inner beast and cannot shift. I love the concept of set-omegas because it is different. I loved the sweetness of this book. I think it's great that the omega's in this series aren't pushovers. I loved the steam and chemistry between the characters. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

This was the most adorable story ever!!

Oh my goodness, did I swoon over this book. With Danon being the perfect well nurturing alpha he is and Akai being the ever bold and soft omega felt like a warn cup of coffee on a cold day.

Akai is an omega who cannot shift. His pack sells him off to a dragon country where he is to serve his master without any complaint. He doesn't expect to be mated to the quiet outcasted dragon shifter who cares about omegas and their wellbeing. As the tension between these two grows, it blows over with them spending their rut/heat together. After this magical time, both Akai and Danon are stuck with questions on whether the other felt as the other felt during this intimate time. With a little rude alphas and a little emotional breakdown, Akai and Danon manage to communicate their thoughts and meet mutual ground. Now as they focus on their baby that is on the way, they manage to deepen their bond into something meaningfully beautiful.

This book is a quick read with low angst featuring dragon shifters, slavery, a cute Dani and lots of heated love/moments.

WONDERFUL*SWEET*BEAUTIFUL

What a TERRIFIC Book. I have a soft spot for Dragons. Shifters are my favorite. Akai is a non shifter Omega Wolf. Sold by his pack into slavery, to participating Dragons. WENDY RATHBONE has a way of softening the blow to these lonely Omegas. Danon is the Alpha Dragon ordered by his flight to pick an Omega from the next shipment. Wendy gives all her characters heart. These two never thought they could be happy. But unexpected circumstances lead them in the right direction. I really enjoyed this Book. I love a MAGNIFICENT happily ever after. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!

Low angst but slave-captor, age-gap, dragon shifter alpha, nonshifting omega, virgin hero, Mpreg (egg) romance.

Sad then sweet then lovely then joyful. I enjoyed this new short story in the author’s Alpha Dragons series of stand-alone novels.

Neither set-omega (aka nonshifting omega) Akai (18) nor alpha dragon Danon (42) want a match. Because he can’t shift, Akai has no rights and is sold by his wolf shifter pack to the dragons as a breeder. Danon has been forced by his flight leader to take one of the set omegas as a slave for breeding because he must contribute to continuing the future of the flight. It’s a frustrating and sad situation…until it isn’t.

Akai thinks he’ll feel like property, and has no idea if he’ll be abused or treated well. Danon is angry that he has to take a slave and thinks the system is wrong. With tension and anxiety between them both, they stumble into living together. And of course, the close proximity and the major enthusiasm of Danon’s dragon self, Dani, for Akai bring Danon into rut and Akai into his first heat.

So ensues a lovely, respectful, growing connection, with the problems of the situation addressed as they go, and a gentle and steamy romance between the two MCs. Prejudice toward Akai exists due to his situation, and Danon is keeping a secret about his dragon close to his chest, but their growing respect and trust soon form a real bond, and their future together will be bright indeed.

All I wanted was a little...more. More hope the situation can be resolved in the future for others, more follow up on the other omega Akai meets and the bullies they encounter at one point. A little more complexity. But really, I left the read satisfied and would read again.

HEA, age-gap, slave-captor, virgin/first times, dragons shifter, non-shifting wolf, alpha-omega, Mpreg. No cheating, no others in any way shape or form, entirely safe on that front. I enjoyed and needed this sweet little read today. Recommended, as is the previous book in the series.

My thanks to Gay Romance Reviews for the ARC; this is my free and impartial opinion.

Stranger In a Strange Land

Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon Wendy Rathbone

October 2024

Akai is a 'set omega's; an omega who can't shift. As such, to his pack, he has no value and no rights, so on his eighteenth birthday he's sold to Dragon Alpha Gaston's 'flight' of dragons.

Danon is a forty-two year old dragon, but despite being a fertile alpha with a rich business and a hoard, he's also considered less because his dragon is less compared to others.

He's instructed by Gaston to mate one of the alphas he's bought, and Danon chooses Akai.

Akai is a bit of a rebel despite being a 'slave' and refuses to interact with Danon. He reckons he's a mean old dragon.

Mostly because of his long white beard.

His views change a little when proper clothing arrives and Sage, Danon's omega cleaner turns up and they start to befriend each other.

He also notices that the dragon is quite well built.

They may be strangers and he may be in a strange land, but he wants to make the most of the life he's forced into.

Of course, as they get to know each other, things change for both of them. There's a dark secret that Danon has been hiding, something he's embarrassed about, but it's that element that helps him understand Akai more.

The chemistry between them sizzles and the friendship that grows between them is special too.

It's a really sweet story with two displaced men who find each other through unwanted circumstances but also find surprising gifts in each other.

There's also fun along the way and Akai has a determined personality.

It's a good HEA, a quick but satisfying read that builds on an extended world.

The second book of Wendy Rathbone's Alpha Dragons series continues the worldbuilding. It's a world where set omegas, those born into a shifter pack who have no animal, are possessions. Sold to other shifter races as breeders at a good profit for their packs. With fewer dragons born each year and fewer omegas, the dragons are the biggest buyers.
Akai is resentful of his designation as a set omega, a breeding slave with no rights. Danon is resentful that his flight master is forcing him to take a set omega in order to expand the flight. He picks Akai out from a group of five, takes him home, and has no idea what to do from there.
They clash. But Danon's rut triggers Akai's heat and they find themselves in bed. Each recognizes the other as their fated mate, but it's been less than two weeks and they don't really know each other.
A bit of angst. A bit of pregnancy. The two have a sweet chemistry. Lots of kissing, lots of "ahhhhh, that's cute" moments.
A short, sweet and fun book. Is it a little predictable? Yes. And no. Rathbone gives us a few twists Enough to make you ignore that this is her usual fare.
I received an advanced copy and this is my review.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5
I adore all of Wendy’s books, and this one is no exception. Her characters are so relatable and real, they feel like people you could know and like as good friends, even when they’re grumpy or mean. Davi, Danon’s dragon, was so adorable, I could just picture this dragon in my mind. He wasn’t like the other dragons in her books and that made him extra special. Danon was the perfect alpha/dragon for Akai, not gruff or mean, just self conscious about his dragon, and resentful at first about the position he was put in by his flight leader, but he came through as the hero for Akai he was meant to be. I loved the sass and strength of character in Akai, the bravery he showed as he faced his situation with trepidation but also courage, and the way he was able to embrace his new feelings and circumstances. This book just made me smile all the way through and left me with a very positive feeling. For a light-hearted, engaging characters, sweet baby on the way, unique nest placement, smiles and good feelings book, this one is for you.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3 stars

Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon is the second in the Alpha Dragons series, but the books are standalone novels and, while they share the same universe, there is no other significant connection between them, at least thus far. I enjoyed the first book in the series because, while imperfect, it had some depth to the characters that I appreciated. Unfortunately, Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon lacked either much of a plot or particularly interesting characters.

It was hard to connect to either Danon or Akai because they had no real depth. I wanted to enjoy Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon more than I did. I enjoy the alpha/omega trope as a general rule, but I just didn’t connect with either of these characters. They were rather flat and given no time or space to develop into fully formed creations.

OMEGA CAPTIVE OF THE MEAN OLD DRAGON is the second book in the Alpha Dragons series but it can be read as a standalone.

Given the themes of this story - slavery, not fitting in - it is remarkably cosy. Danon and Akai make a gorgeous couple and I love the caretaking side of things. The story focuses on them as they meet and learn to live with each other. Dani was a wonderful addition to the story, and I love that Caymen seems to have inherited the same type of dragon.

A great story set in a world I'm thoroughly enjoyed. A one-sit read that I definitely recommend. Can't wait to read more in this series.

This Mpreg shifter romance caught my attention within the first few pages & I really enjoyed reading it (best of all - it is a standalone even though it is the second book in the “Alpha Dragon” series) throughout the storyline, I found that some of the situations were quite unique, interesting and at times absolutely heartwarming. The characters (a male omega wolf shifter unable to shift, “Akai” & a seemingly much older male alpha dragon, ”Danon”) are quite well-developed individuals with opposing personalities but they continue to develop & ultimately complement each other very well.
There is: shifters, fated mates, humor, unexpected twists, drama, prejudices, auctions, slavery, emotional turmoil, insecurities, attractions, some steamy scenes, happiness, love, contentment and a beautiful happy conclusion for this couple.

"I looked up as more stars popped out of the darkness. It was as if they were smiling down on us."

What a wonderful addition to the series, I loved it!!! I hope at some point all these set-omegas get to meet up with babies in tow. That would make a great bonus story along with whether the babies were omegas or alphas.

Wow, just wow! You gotta love that syllabus for the Set-Omega Slave Class. They truly were slaves and it just hurt my heart to see them treated this way. Not all of them went to a good home Akai did. You just have to love that mean old alpha Danon/Dani. Looks can be deceiving you know.

When all was said and done I just wanted to sing Puff the Magic Dragon and smile to myself.

'Full out beastie & feral', purple & pink, chimney smoke & toasted marshmallows, cute purple teddy bear

"Omega Captive of the Mean Old Dragon" is simply adorable. Of course, Danon, the 'mean old dragon' and Akai, a set-omega from wolf pack Dmitri, have their own significant personal angsts.

The story starts as bleak for Akai. He's to be sold to the Flight Gaston as a slave. Akai is also a willful and spirited omega. Dragon alpha Danon is just as unhappy being forced to mate with one of latest set-omegas. He begrudgingly selects Akai. Their relationship begins with a heat/rut, then burgeons as they get to know each other.

It's plot driven, so the book is mostly drama and steam. The visuals are spectacular. Most of the side characters appear in the beginning and play crucial, but limited roles. Recommended.

I enjoyed this story with feisty Akai and Danon who was not as miserable and mean as he appeared. There were a lot of emotions in this story as they sorted everything out. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content and MPREG.

4.5 Stars!

At its most basic, this is a book you WANT to be aggravated at because of the unfairness of what happened to Akai, the omega wolfless MMC. The way it was written however, instead of feeling bad for him, you’re rooting for him to have someone who will care for him despite his status as a set-omega (an omega born to shifter parents but who is unable to shift themselves).

Danon, the alpha dragon MMC, knows a bit about the unfairness of life himself. A big strapping alpha, he’s hiding behind a secret that keeps him isolated from his flight and everyone around him. He’s even let his appearance go, why should he even bother anymore? That is, until he finds himself saddled with an omega he never asked for…

Read Danon and Akai’s story today; watch as they find together what they’d never hoped to find for themselves. You’re gonna love it! 4.5 Sweet Stars!

Sweet Alpha Dragon

Both MCs believed they're flawed due to the mess up prejudice in their world. Danon and his dragon Dani because of his size. Akai is sold into slavery because he can't shift. Neither had a choice in becoming bound mates. Understandable at first they both fought the pairing until circumstances forced them together and they discovered they're fated mates. I liked how their relationship developed after, neither thought they could be happy but fate prove them wrong. The beginning was hard to read but once you get past that Akai and Danon love makes it all worth it. I might not like the world they live in but I love seeing these characters falling in love. Looking forward to the next one.

Akai is a non shifter who is considered not worth enough to keep so he is sold, with other non shifters like him, to the dragons as a slave that was expected to serve and do as he is told. Danon is an alpha dragon tasked to care for these omegas and he is given the chance to choose one although he does not think he needs one. Neither wants what they are being asked to do. Akai does not want to be a docile breeder and Danon does not want a set omega. Until he and Akai share a rut/heat together and realize that they are fated. They are new to one another but their chemistry is undeniable, so with a few hiccups they get to know one another and prepare for the hatching of their new one. This was sweet, if short.

A sweet, enemies-to-lovers, age-gap story about Akai And Danon, fated mates who meet serendipitously, if you don't believe in fate. Danon is a dragon with a surprising 'defect' who presents as something he's not to hide who he is. Akai is a set-omega, sold into slavery at 18 because he cannot shift. Neither man wants to be in the civil relationship that both their leaders force them into, but in each other they find the freedom to be who they are and the joy of found family. The extra half star is for the world-building, especially with respect to the appearance of shifters who can't shift and how they're treated. In addition, the discovery of 'defective' dragons is a new twist giving those mighty creatures a vulnerability that is both physical and emotional.

3.5 stars.

I really felt for Akai and the situation he was in at the start of the story. I'm glad he was so strong and feisty and that he pushed back where he could to really make others appreciate his value. Danon was both protective and sweet but also a bit mysterious at times too. I understood the world building but didn't really feel we got an awful lot of the dragon dynamics at play or why Danon really listened to his flight leader's demands. The pair definitely had great chemistry and I was pleased they got their HEA together by the end as well. It's a good read, I just wished for a little bit more depth to the world as a whole.

Akai is an omega wolf shifter who can not shift. He lives in a world where if you can’t shift and are an omega you become a slave. When he turns 18 he is sold to dragon shifters who are in desperate need of omegas to have their children.
When Danon picks him, at first he isn’t much interested until he gets to know Akai.
Akai is scared, sad and angry that he doesn’t get a choice in what kind of life he wants.
As the two of them get to know each other feelings develop and they end up falling in love.
Danon proves to his omega that he is a caring alpha that will do anything to protect and keep Akai happy.
Spicy HEA guaranteed.

Good alphas are not always hard to find. The plight of a set-omega is horrific. Akai, a set omega is not ready to accept the status quo. He has thoughts and questions. He is sold into slavery and is bought by Damon. The circumstances around the purchase add and intriguing side story. Danon has a few issues with himself and his flight. He does the right thing but doesn't always get the credit for it. This is a sweet, funny intriguing sad imaginative story of what happens when you are between teh rock and the hard place Akai is adorable and Damon is a nice guy. Good story, nicely paced.Well done! Akai and Danon story had a rough start as both characters had a difficult past, confront inadequacy, have insecurities, and their own demon to defeat.
At first, they are both reluctant and closed off as they are afraid of rejection and insecure about the future.
They slowly open themselves, learn to communicate, and realise that they are stronger together, and outside opinions are irrelevant as long as they are happy.
I liked how their relationship bloomed, and trust is earned to be completely open.
I liked the birthing scene, and the moment their bundle of joy joined them.
