Simon, one of the last of his kind, seeks otherworldly treasures to change the card fate has dealt him. When he discovers Penumbra Springs, a secret haven for mythics, he's determined to join. But the haven hides more than just a community of strange beings. It guards the entrance to the infamous Dread Dungeon, a deadly labyrinth where arcane mysteries and artifacts await all Dread Runners brave enough to conquer it.
4.5 stars. A lot less sex in this one than I anticipated, making for more story and character development. MC is very nearly OP, but can't do it all himself. Not actually a harem book, not to say that isn't in the offing if there are more books. Overall it was an entertaining read and kept my attention.
There were some inconsistent elements however. The dungeon as sporting/watchparty event fell off pretty quickly, so I'm not sure that worked as originally intended. Didn't mar the book for me, so it still gets rounded up.
My first LitRPG, really liked it. I enjoy Eden's creative imagination as the various encounters and how the MC and team solve them grabbed my attention enough to keep me reading. I read this on her Patreon and needed my daily Dread Runner fix as she released each chapter! There is some spice here and loads of action.
A solid beginning to a series that has potential. There is a decent amount of adventure and action in here and intriguing characters. I wanted more development for the main cast but I guess that's a promise for future novels. Though it is primarily an adventure novel, there is a solid romance sub plot and a few spicy scenes.
I've read quite a few books by the author, and usually I enjoy them quite a bit. This one fell flat for me.
The MC is a darkling, one of the last of his mythical kind, and he hopes to finally earn his way into a special community for mythical beings. He gets in, and meets his 4 female neighbors. The community has a dungeon, and teams for running it are formed by neighborhoods. So, he has a read made 4 teammates to run with. This starts a pattern of things being handed to the MC by the author.
The MC gets romantically involved with the first woman he meets in the neighborhood, in the form of a cat that becomes a witch, The other neighbors are a wight, a flesh golem, and a vampire. They have a short training montage, as they are the worst dungeon delving team in the community. The furthest they've reached together is the 9th level (out of 99), and the furthest any of them have reached is the 28th. But the MC wants to reach the bottom.
And lo-and-behold, he does reach the 99th level of the dungeon. He's OP as all get out, and keeps getting stronger as they go. He ends up reaching the last floor solo, since everyone else has "died" and been teleported out fully healed. It really is farcical how someone who's never been in the dungeon before can reach the bottom, when nobody previously has reached past level 41. And he does it on his first ever run.
I expected better from the author than this, and while there is a clearly planned book 2, I will not be reading it.
