This is an excellent book if you’re wanting to get inspired to get into hiking! It covers all the basics you need to know & it was user friendly & easy to read! What an inspiring young lady who wrote this book. Proud to support a local Ōtautahi lass 🥾🌎✨
Best book I've bought all year! Hannah has given me the confidence to take the next steps and start overnight tramping. I had the gear pages open for hours trying to make a list of what I needed to buy, read the preparation, and actually went and did an easy overnight (first overnight ever, and by myself) and then I did another, and now I'm planning my next.
I cant stop rereading this book, it has amazingly beautiful photos and there are really helpful tips and pointers for every single walk - like where to find the hot pools. The book has quite a heavy South Island lean to it. It makes me want to fly to the South Island and live for a year in the mountains.
Thank you Hannah, for inspiring me to start on this journey into the wilderness (and for telling me what hut bagging is... ).
Wild Walks Aotearoa was gifted to my partner and I by his parents for our 2024-2025 Summer roadtrip in Te Waipounamu (South Island). We agreed more often than not with the author's heck level rating and wow factor. On the other hand, the duration estimates were always wrong as they are made by DOC and meant for people with low to moderate fitness. So far, we did:
Hikes for tykes: Rainbow Falls Devil's Punchbowl Falls
For this review, I don’t know where to start! Luckily, after reading Wild Walks Aotearoa, I certainly know how to start a hike. This is such a phenomenal book for anyone and everyone - whether a seasoned tramper, day hiker, casual walker or someone who just enjoys a good story and learning about NZ’s best spots, historical facts, Māori mythology and plenty of delightful authorisms. First and foremost, a guide that will stop you from being “all the gear and no idea”, to guiding you through which gear and then many ideas, of how to tramp in NZ. After reading it cover to cover, twice, I feel I have completed more of the hikes in the book than I actually have. Thank you Hannah-Rose for bringing a much needed piece of yourself into the literature world for us all to enjoy!
