First Necromancer #2

First Necromancer Book Two: A System Descent LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
It’s the end of the world… but that doesn’t mean things can’t get worse.

The Incursion Event has been announced, and sapient races from across the multiverse are invading the newly integrated planet Earth. These beings have decades, centuries or even millennia of experience living within The System and wield powers far beyond the mutated Beasts and mana-spawned Monsters Drew and his friends have faced in the past.

While the newly established settlement of Sanctuary flourishes, much of humanity is hanging on by a thread. The small communities that have managed to eke out an existence know nothing of the horrors that await them at the hands of the more gruesome Incursion races. Even hastily fortified cities stand little chance against their onslaught.

To survive in the face of this new threat, and save what is left of humanity, Drew and his family are forced to level up in The Baleful Lady’s own treacherous training dungeon. An experience that might be even more dangerous than the Incursions themselves.

Forced past his limits, Drew must learn to use his System-granted necromantic powers in frightening new ways… or accept that humanity’s extinction is inevitable.

Is it the thought that counts?

Interesting ideas terrible delivery. These two books weren't fun there was no fun. I had to force my way through the second book, with a lot of skipping. The main character has no umph.

Draw throws a pity party for himself then quits being a necromancer

Big drop off from the first book in terms of character alignment with what a necromancer should be. First, Drew just cannot stop whining. He has some perceived failure and then he throws himself a pity party about it over and over again. It is exhausting. I don't understand why authors write characters like this. If is even more perplexing when you consider that race is supposed to curb this stupid emotional baby stuff. Drew has become a crybaby. It isn't character development.

Next, calling him a necromancer is laughable. He pretty much ignores the class for nearly half the book then just when he sort of creates good minions and develops a system for using them he doesn't what to use the artificial mana created minion because the act too "alive." That is just pure idiocy. The whole book he whines because he can't save people then he give up a power tool in his intelligent minions because he is uncomfortable. Drew is not a necromancer he's a whiny fairy princess.

Overall, terrible second book. Probably done with the series. Another great start ruined.

A lot happens quickly

This book feels like it should have been broken into two, maybe three books.

Part one: main characters spend a lot of time leveling in a dungeon. We really only see random moments of the dungeon, which is sad as it had a lot of potential for content. I feel like we should have had more content from the dungeon or none at all. We don't even get to see choices of evolution or spells; the author likes to keep things more plot oriented instead character growth.

Part two: my favorite. The creation of an undead army that actually starts to make the main character look and act like a true necromancer. A lot of fun.

Part three and four: the war to retake a major city from invaders. As well as the hunt of the shadow fiends. This section was all over the place (I guess that reflects real life) and it was difficult to read as so much was happening.

There was one thing in this book that repeatedly made me want to strangle the author. Whenever he tries to write the way someone talks when they expand on one word as if someone was sarcastically agreeing with you, he would extend the wrong part of the word. Example: if someone said something and you decide to reply with the word sure; instead of writing the vowel as the elongated sassy way of saying it suuuuuure, he would always expand the last letter of the word sureeeeeee. It totally reads differently than what you would say.

Have fun !!

Better than the first book

I love a lot about this series so far, but I think the characterization is the highlight-in book 1, I felt like there were pacing issues, with too many time skips and *telling* is what happened after the fact, instead of *showing* it to us. But, while that still happens here, it’s much less often and less problematic when it does-particularly after the end of the dungeon arc.

I think my only real complaint at this point is how little screen time many of the side characters get-Amber, Spock, Freya get the most of the non-divine cast, but they’re just kind of *there* a lot of the time-they often don’t get to do a lot, or really shine (Spock especially), but it’s even worse for everyone else; Mark and Amanda barely appear, poor little Scolder is only mentioned a couple times, etc. Maybe the best solution would be to have “bonus stories”, like many Japanese light novels do, that give those otherwise neglected characters some attention without pulling attention away from the main narrative? Perhaps the author could post them online, with the publisher or on a blog or something, and have links at the back to these side-stories?

All that said, I must address one other thing-

I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS TOLKIEN SLANDER!!!

Taking the eagles to Mordor would have been the *worst possible option*-nevermind the possibility of one of them trying to take the ring for themselves, once they arrived, they’d have had to fly past a swarm of fell-beast riding Nazgûl (and all it would take is Frodo getting knocked off his ride in the chaotic aerial melee and oop! The world is fucked), land in front of the volcano with *hundreds of thousands of orcs* camped outside, all with bows and SIEGE weapons, all while Sauron bends every ounce of his will and magic to stopping them. Especially since he would have literally seen them coming from MILES away.

In other words, flying the eagles there would have been *absolute suicide*. Anyone who bothered to think about it for even a moment would realize that.

even with flaws this book is worth a read.

The MC is very likable and has a heart of gold. My only complain about him. He’s a little bit whiny, he can’t save everybody so get over it. He’s supposedly a game player, but he asked silly questions about things he should already know from playing games. he also should never be afraid of his creations creations, such as the Panthers. The character of Spock in my opinion is wasted. He should’ve been a mage or a warlock or battle healer. in my opinion as a reader, the character is silly and useless. Speaking of healers if you’re not going to give the MC his own regeneration ability then the party does need a healer. if you as an author are going to turn your MC into a punching bag at least give him the ability to heal himself like the other big boys in the genre, defiance of the fall, system change, he who fights with monsters,Azarinth healer, the path of Ascension, ECT. The story is great and the world building is excellent, the side characters are excellent and have their own thoughts and opinions. Well done. I give a five star rating because I did not stop reading, I did not skim forward, read the entire book until the end that’s why it deserves five stars. Even though I have issues with this book, I will be happy to read the next one in the series.

Good read but it's a lot different from most LitRPG I've read as it skips a lot of leveling and the spell selections and spell write ups which I miss so that's the big downer.

The big upside is how the series begins with the decent, and changes to earth and it's people.

So, it's got really good parts with that, and downsides where you skim the pages. So it'd be a 3.5 star instead of 4 stars, the good of that is it has room to improve and room to fail. So, in the next book I'm really hoping the author goes back and shows the spell descriptions and choices. Drew seems to have 4 spells not including his raise dead, yet no one has a clue what exactly his spells do such as "Agony and "Coflagalation" and his screaming skull, as well as his physical attack with his weapon.

It'd bring really nice to know what the indept description of these spells as what choices he had when he levels and what happens when he and others evolve.

Massive disappointment.

I really enjoyed the first book, then this crap heap dropped and ruined the series.

Not even getting into the religious stuff that others have mentioned, this book just went into a power leveling, hand holding pos. Literally nothing felt like it mattered. MC constantly had “the lady” holding his hand and basically being yoda.

As for the MC himself, it felt like ALL HE DID WAS WHINE! Like literally all he did was whine about needing to be stronger, must save people, must do this, must do that. This is a massive departure from his character in the first book where he was focused on his family first and foremost. His wife is being shredded in the dungeon with him, but we must endure to save the people! Complete load of crap.

Another brilliant book in the series

Just finished this book a couple of hours ago and wanted to give the book time to settle in my mind so i could write a good review. In one word brilliant. While i missed something's from book one I feel leaving them out was the right choice. As it allowed for the progression to be really shown for drew but it also made sense as a whole, as he wouldn't have been as shopping to basically stop and smell the roses after spending to him over 9 years away.

Really looking forward to what happens in book three defiantly a 5 star book Abbott what one guy would do all to protect his friends and family.

great read

I greatly enjoyed the overarching themes of the last book and this one. The MC’s stance of protecting his own is something I can get behind. What kind of made me want to stop reading was his (in my opinion) dumb need to “free” a people who told him they want to be there. I don’t mind the religious undertones, I think that is awesome, and I can think of several beings I hope make an appearance. If you want high stakes, new uses for the dead and power level curb stomping, give this a read!

Good addition

Good addition to the series. The story encompasses more time than the first book and isn’t as heavy on stats or spell descriptions. Which is a bummer for me, I liked being able to read spell descriptions when he was picking among other things. The story is still a fun read and moves nicely. We get a lot more world/universe/character development in this book.

My favorite necromancer

When you work for the lady of death things can get weird and difficult quickly. No ,atter how strong you get it doesn't feel like it's enough.
One battle turns I to the next
At the end of the day
After many years and sorrow
You do what you can and make the world a little better and help others get stronger.
This is a solid LITRPG

Cheap knockoff version of Primal Hunter

This book is cheap knockoff version of Primal Hunter. Even though it stole most primary ideas from it I enjoyed the first book, it has fluent language and it was a story of necromancer however in second book it wad hard to read and I decided to stop when the writer wrote “you can not trust people who likes CATs “

I am really liking this series, with the world and the system of it. My only complaint is that despite this being already a long book, it skipped over so much of the dungeon, which probably could have been its own book. Afterwards, I loved Drew creating his undead horde/army and taking back the big city

DNF @ 40%

Book skips over multiple grades and class choices and skill gains, which is something I enjoy and the first book had. Time-compressed dungeon this early into the series is an odd choice, as well.

Amazing 👏

Love how the story is developing. Kept my attention the entire read. I did not want to put it down. The personal struggles Drew deals with made for strong growth and good depth.

Like the transition from starting story to new universal elements along with the new changes that occur with new politics at play due to the new realities.

Mostly good with some annoyances

While I liked most of it especially when he actually gets to doing stuff. I agree that all the whining is a bit annoying. Like he's constantly wondering why he's not enough as if he's some 15 year old. Not a grown adult who can see even a Goddess can't do everything and save everyone so why would he at his level be able to do it? It obvious and stupid. It also feels off when book 1 he didn't even want people to come to property and now book 2 it's his job to save everyone in the world? When did this happen.

Taking as long as he does to start back into necromancer minion also seems a bit dumb. The character was pretty smart in book 1 but now book 2 it's like he can't think of anything or realize what necromancers do in books or you know, Ask the goddess how?

Still good book beyond those odd points.

I do dislike him missing some major things for his minions. Like Drones? Sure he has his un-upgraded crows but they suck. Intelligence is #1 priority for a military. So drones with high perception and mana sensing abilities. Able to spot enemies, illusions and point of interest should be number one. Sending them out on scouting missions.
Then he should have made a CnC, Command and Control center. Had his researchers make a map that updates with what the scouts see. An constantly updating map of what the drones see. From updating enemies to survivors to what ever.

So once that's done. Defense. Gatling turrets towers for base defense. Gatling to let the rotating barrels cool down from overheating or overuse on one enchanted barrel. Spinning and constantly firing. That should be second. Able to wipe out swaths.

Then vehicles with that Gatling for assault. ONLY THEN do all the stuff he did and make the stuff he did.

From what was made the Behemoths, shows they can make very good stuff but that's big bada boom. Then they got single shot minions that are super slow just with masses. So where is the spray and pray tons of death research like gatlings and big boom canons, mortars and the like. I feel like if they could make the Rinos and Beheamoths they could have made a lot more things inspired by reading some of Spocks books or talking to the MC.

Just seems pretty basic stuff that anyone who saw how earth's weapons devoloped from Bow to Musket to what came next and what was the most deadly would think of before doing what he did.

What most annoyed was mostly the lack of Drones or at least use of his crows. Why is he using ground scouts for everything when he could just use crows.

Indoors? Raise some damn Mice minions. Rats! Crow carry Rats and drops them to search in houses then picks them up and flys them to new areas. Simple. Then upgrade them later when research better minions.

Honestly thats the only thing that bothers me that the author makes the MC be brainless and handicapped to add drama I think. Rather than using his full abilities. Sure human minions are great but there are tons of other great minions. Why doesn't have tons of raised monsters? Go after the baddest monsters around and use their bodies.

After all, what sort of necromancer doesn't have a bone dragon? Where is this man's bone dragon!

The end comedy in this story seemed misplaced. Like i thought this story was trying to take itself seriously, but then it ends on a nearly ludicrous scene. Also, the whole subplot about MC being all butthurt about his minions getting sentience and how he now thinks they are slaves, man, you could have thrown that entire plot into the trash. Who frickin cares. The amount of time MC flip flops over his choices was making my head spin. 'oh i need less focus on minions and more on becoming a combat powerhouse' 'oh wait, i need to worry less about being a powerhouse and focus more on being a minion commander', 'now i need to create for myself an awesome minion army capable of reasoning and thinking for themselves so i don't have to command them to do every little thing', 'oh shit, they're too smart now i guess, time to release them into the wild and just go back to making dumb ones again'. Plus, why so worried about the right of your sentient dead guys, when you have no consideration for your sentient dog? Yeah lets just keep treating them like a dog.

Also, intentionally making MC a complete dumbass for not thinking of creating flying minions to combat, you know, flying enemies, just so you could save it for the last battle, was also lame.

And finally, not having a moment where the dog Freya and Cerberus meet and smell each other's asses was a waste. A humorous moment like that might have given you another star. Hopefully the next volume goes back to being more enjoyable.

So many complaints with this book. First, and most annoyingly, the Main Character becomes a self-righteous and pompous blowhard. He probably was in the first book as well, but it REALLY grated on my nerves this time. He is constantly either explaining to death the various reasons, especially moral reasons, for his every action. If he isn’t doing that, he is pissing and moaning, or sulking about how he “should have done better!” WAAAAAHH!

Second, the author is obviously a fan of the litrpg genre. We get it. You don’t have to drop a reference to a different litrpg series in every other chapter. While acknowledging that there are no truly original ideas in the world, you don’t have to obviously “borrow” from every other litrpg in existence.

While I enjoyed the first book, I had to take breaks from this one before I could finish it. It also put me in a bad mood while doing so. I just spent so much time being either pissed off at the MCs stupidity, annoyed by his navel-gazing, frustrated by his indecision or pissed off by his self-righteous rants and sermons.

1st book was interesting enough but the 2nd is quite a disappointment. So many parts were so dragging. The book had a lot of text but not much substance.

As far as the MC goes, it’s kind of ridiculous how long it takes for him to have an ounce of character growth. He’s stuck pitying himself most of the time and angry for the rest, which is weird considering that he chose to change his race to not be affected by this kind of stuff. Now that he’s classed up by a lot compared to the 1st book, shouldn’t he have been more level-headed?

The kingdom-building aspect would have been an enjoyable read but The Pillar and the new allied races were largely ignored after introduction. His necromancer class is just used as a background mechanic which the MC could have spent more time perfecting in the early stages to avoid needless trouble. It would have also been enjoyable to read through his skill and evolution choices and see what his thought-making processes were, but the rapid growth stage just glossed over that.

I think the series had potential but most of it seems to be wasted. I will be reluctantly dropping this series.

Much as I enjoyed the first book, the second book is markedly better. While Book One set the stage for alien incursions and Drew's need to level up to face them, Book Two delivers on that in truly dramatic fashion. Both Drew and his wife, Amber, face horrific trials and tribulations in order to advance enough to save their community and maybe even their species. Their journey is just one facet in this supersized novel, the real challenge is when they rejoin the people of Sanctuary and need to sweep up human survivors and fight off overlapping invasions of diabolical aliens. There's a lot of fighting and a smidgen of politicking as Sanctuary grows into a large town. Coldfang89 makes a few references to other author's works, like demonic chickens and talking axes, which are fun to come across.

On the supernatural front, Drew's relationship with both the Baleful Lady and Hades grows stronger as he makes significant breakthroughs in his role as Baleful Warden as well as his ability to use his 3 affinities. This leads to both huge power advantages for Drew and a few downstream complications that might play out in the next book. I thought the last book was 5-star and this one is even better.

Too many dumb writers

The "writer" is supposed to be from Oklahoma, yet the book is mostly written by special needs writers from an island northwest of Europe. The amount of fake words, incorrect tensed words, and misspelled words like damnit prove a writer from Oklahoma definitely did not write this book. The constant inconsistencies ruin the experience of trying to read this book and keep track of everything that changes from writer to writer. What is with the weird stutter on certain words? Anddd, righttt, and a few others don't make sense. It feels like they were trying to say aaaaaand or riiiiight to stress out the word but lacked the braincells to figure out what one of the writers had when they said sweeeeeet. All in all, the story is good but the writing is done by special needs Islanders which ruined the whole experience.

This book seemed to be dumbed down. From the understandable 1st time explanation to the dumbed down explanation to the characters. Especially Drew, in the 1st book he was smart but actually stupid in the 2nd book.

In this book he kills God and basically praises the devil. You lose me after that.

One of the best LitRPG books I have read

Great combination of story, humour and progression. It doesn’t feel forced. I highly recommend this to any LitRPG Fan. I can see some religious people having some issue with the book, but for me it did not become a major issue.
