With the hardcover collection of LEGION LOST coming in June, DC Comics collects the tale that led into that space-spanning epic: LEGION OF THE DAMNED, originally published in LEGIONNAIRES #78-79 and LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #123-124. Featuring spectacular art by Olivier Coipel, the story begins as Cosmic Boy, Brainiac 5 and other heroes return to Earth, only to find it dominated by the alien race known as the Blight. How can the team stop these alien invaders when they're being picked off one by one? NOTE: THIS IS THE RARE FIRST PRINTING ERROR EDITION THAT MOST COPIES OF WERE DESTROYED DUE TO A SEQUENCING ERROR WITHIN THE COMIC. THE CORRECTED EDITION WILL CONTAIN THE STORY IN THE CORRECT ORDER WITH MODIFIED COVER ARTWORK, ADDING THIS TO THE LIST OF EVER COLLECTIBLE ERROR EDITION COMIC BOOKS.
The Earth is slowly being invaded by the Blight, an alien species determined to take over the world one citizen - and legionnaire - at a time, and even the return of Cosmic Boy, Brainiac 5 and their allies from a previous mission may not be enough to stop them. Abnett will keep readers guessing with this dark, dreary and perfectly snarky tale that will chill fans as much as it excites them. How can the Legion stop such a race when their own team is being torn apart?
This book is a cheapo collection of the four-part "Legion of the Damned" arc that kicked of Abnett, Lanning and Coipel's superb Legion run - in short, its existence is a grab for a few extra dollars when DC finally collected Legion Lost (which I'll read next). (Side note: it's kind of funny that Paul Levitz, as publisher, was such a booster of the Legion on one hand, but on the other, never really gave much support to any version of the team that wasn't "his".)
Anyway, the story holds up nicely. Very gripping, emotionally taunt, lots of pathos. Coipel's art is rough, but works for the storyline mostly. A few scenes could read more clearly, but he makes up for it with such visual distinctiveness that you look past his storytelling shortcomings. DnA cull the Legion down to a minimal cast to focus on the loss and fear, but also the heroism and determination of the remaining cast members. It's a very bracing storyline, and I look forward to getting into Lost now.
