Rate this book

"CALL SETH."

After a brutal attack, that's all that Callie Lattimer's uncle Dan, a former police officer, can say. Callie knows that Memphis cop Seth Dawtry will help, even if it means working with the woman who rejected him. The attack seems tied to a decades-old unsolved murder Dan could never let go. New evidence must have gotten him uncomfortably close to the truth. Now it's up to Seth and Callie to follow the clues. But as they uncover answers, they discover the real threat is closer than they ever thought possible….

This was a story about a cold case murder that still affected Callie and her Uncle Dan. The killer would stop at nothing to keep his secret even if it meant killing everyone involved years later.

The ending was really explosive.

I love this series Cold Case Files! Sandra does an outstanding job of keeping you on the edge of your chair, trembling, wondering what is going to happen next!! Never a dull moment! I love the fact that it is ALWAYS someone ya least suspect, or at least in my case it is...I NEVER guess the right bad guys!! Loved the unexpected but happy ending!! Another of your great ones, Sandra!

Maybe even less. Though it started out promising, it turned out to be just another wimpy female needing to be rescued by a male. The painful lack of communication in this genre was one-sided - again the female. I wondered at one point if the author disliked her own gender as [SPOILER ALERT] two of the three "bad guys" were female. The female protagonist was bright enough to get a Ph.D, yet not bright enough to figure out the obvious answer to what was keeping the couple apart. She obviously did not love the male protagonist enough to trust him with her "secret," and face the consequences together. Finally, as I have read a lot of mysteries over my 67 years, in my opinion, Ms. Robbins broke a rookie rule of mystery writing [SPOILER ALERT] - "If the author tries really, really hard to paint one person as the "bad guy," that person probably isn't."

Callie, a modern feminist college professor, goes back to her hometown to visit her retiring uncle for the summer. Her Uncle Dan, who raised her after her parents died, is shot on the way home from the airport. She demands to be included in the investigation by her former fiancé, Seth, who is a police detective.

I do not like this book. It makes me mad. I don’t like Callie. She is rude, pushy and demanding, and when told not to do something, she does it anyway. I felt so bad for Seth, who loves such an awful woman.

I’m not well informed about police procedure, but I’m pretty sure that victims are not included in police investigation work. If they get demanding, they get arrested and put in jail ‘for their own safety.’

When told that her uncle didn’t tell her about a cold case that he has obsessively investigated for 25 years, lest she would demand he stop, Callie says she wishes she had known, so she could make things easier for him, but then says, “He shouldn’t have put himself in danger like this. …if he lives I’m going to insist on some changes. …Maybe … he can put this case behind him,” proving her uncle right.

Instead of telling the man she loves (and who loves her) why she feels unfit to be his wife, she lies, telling him she doesn’t want to marry him because he’s a police officer, thus likely to get killed, like her father.

After two attempts on her life, and an apology in which she states that she “won’t interfere again,” Callie still ignores instructions to stay out of harm’s way, putting herself, as well as police officers, in danger.

Callie is rude to Seth (telling him three times, “You’re not the boss of me!”) WHEN HE APOLOGIZES(!!) for being surprised when she is asked to dinner by someone he doesn’t like.

Callie tells Seth (Yes, the police investigator trying to keep her alive!) “I’m going to do it whether you like it or not.”
The two main characters in this romance novel don’t seem to be heading into a loving relationship.

Seth has been shockingly patient and accommodating with Callie throughout the story. When Callie finally tries to tell the truth about why she left, Seth starts being impatient and rude!

Some odd scenes or turns of phrase:

Carlos ‘cocked the trigger’ of his gun.

[Seth] ‘was out the [car] door and running for the entrance before the car came to a complete stop.’ Seth was the DRIVER!

A bulldozer was used to remove ‘scoops’ of dirt to dig a grave.

Clean language.

Contains: Premarital kissing, murder, blood.

Great storyline! Trail of Secrets kept me guessing until the culprit was revealed. Reading this book was like putting together an intricate puzzle without having the box to know what the finished puzzle will look like. It isn't until towards the end that the final puzzle pieces fit together to reveal the beautiful picture this book is.
Well done!
Sandra Robbins is a new Author for me and I will definitely be looking for her books in the future!

Callie's connection to law enforcement made her participation in Seth's investigation make sense. I appreciated that Callie didn't feel comfortable telling Seth her medical reason for initially refusing to marry him. The criminal was foreshadowed, but it seemed that the "smaller" players needed to be established more smoothly for the storyline to work. The number of deaths throughout had it feeling a bit like a Shakespearean tragedy.

I loved how Seth and Callie's relationship developed. It was rocky at first due to Callie rejecting Seth's marriage proposal two years prior. But Seth pushed aside his hurt to protect Callie, at first because her uncle was like a father to him and he was fighting for his life in a hospital. But, eventually Seth realizes he can't let anything happen to Callie because he's never stopped loving her.

This would probably be closer to a 3-1/2 stars because I didn’t see the twist towards the end. It was your typical formulaic Christian mystery but a little better than most. I pick these books when I need an easy read that’s not too gory.
