The date was October 31, 1979. The air was cool and a light fog blew in from the gulf, cloaking the Tampa area in an ominous, tight-fitting tunic. The annual Halloween festivities had just begun and a night of mischievous tomfoolery was afoot.

Scandalous and nefarious characters took flight. Doorbells were rung and ill-boding tricks were played regardless of the treats given. This was the dark reality of the bustling Florida metropolitan.

To the north, Grateful Dead crooned the night's theme music at the Nassau Coliseum. Within earshot of the concert, witnesses stated a UFO hovered over the grounds for thirty minutes before vanishing.

At the same time the Cromarty's were busy hosting their notorious Halloween party at 112 Ocean Ave., better known as the Amityville Horror House. Screams and cries for help were reported throughout the night, punctuated with the disappearance of the family next door. They were never heard from again.

Unknowingly altering the course of history, Kurt Vonnegut released "Jailbird" the same week KISS gained infamy on The Tomorrow Show. The aftermath of this collision would not be felt for decades until the emergence of Justin Bieber.

After a night filled with mayhem and destruction and the deaths of several prominent entertainers, politicians and a notorious bank robber, the Federal government was forced to loan $1.5 billion dollars to Chrysler. This spurred a series of violent protests, resulting in the Brunah Agate oil spill. Over 10.7 million gallons of oil were dumped into the Galveston Bay. This became the worst oil spill disaster in U.S. history.

A few hours later on November 1, 1979, Rashad Freeman was born. Feel free to draw your own conclusions.

This is part three of the story, but the first full-length novel in the series.

Penny has made it to Nashville and has joined up with the group there. That is the good news. The bad news is that there isn't any real safety there either. The group is dwindling as people fail to return from scavenging for supplies. Lenny and Rebecca are one of the better teams though. They team up with Max, the bad apple of the group, to look for another missing team. They find more than they were looking for, and this starts them on a harrowing adventure.

It is great to see more characters added (even if most of them are killed) to the story. Lenny continues to grow, both as a character and as a person. There is non-stop action with plenty of narrow escapes. When I first read the introductory starting story, I was not expecting aliens. But I am glad with their introduction into the story. There is still plenty of room to explore though.

I hope Lenny makes it but if he does die in book five, I hope he gets a death like Roddy Piper's character in the movie, They Live. Let him go out defiant and giving the aliens the finger.

There are quite a few glitches in the novel which is common in ebooks it seems. One was repeated several times throughout the book. The past tense of grind is ground not grinded, like the author uses. (Just remember that you use ground black pepper, not grinded black pepper.) There is also a lot of harsh language. I could have gladly have done without most of it but I understand why it was there. But if you don't like seeing it than you should think about skipping this book if it will offend you.

I look forward to seeing how the story continues to develop and recommend it to fans of sci-fi action tales.

This is the third in the Doomsday Playbook series, and felt like a proper book, albeit short, after the first two which were novellas, available as a collection, but the story therefore felt rather therefore disjointed. Confusingly, the author has changed his numbering, so this is labelled as book 2 on the ebook cover.

Lenny and Rebecca have escaped from their underground bunker following the global attack that has killed most of the population. Teaming up with a group of survivors in Nashville, they are forced into the road once more, running from attacks by both the alien attack creatures (called scouts) and hostile human survivors. Constantly on the search for food and weapons, and with tensions running high between them, as some of their companions are basically arseholes, they have no real plan until they meet a group trying to get a former politician back to DC with information that might help fight the aliens. The body count is high, as new characters are introduced only to be killed off in various gruesome ways. This is very like the TV series Falling Skies, with major elements of The Walking Dead - not a bad thing as I enjoyed both of them. Lenny has evolved into a proper hero since the first book, but Rebecca is bratty, bitchy and flighty. There are some other good characters but many don’t survive long.
The writing is pretty average and there are lots of typos, and repetitive expressions - characters are constantly sneering, cutting their eyes (I had to look that one up), sucking their teeth, and their mouths dropping open - every other page! Despite this, I enjoyed this as a fast paced action adventure and will be reading the next one soon

Wow! It was great to see the cast in a complete book. And even better to see that cast expand. I love how Rashad manages to make his characters seem so real and how he describes scenes without using too many words, but makes you feel like you're right there. It was nice to see the sci-fi element expanded and was definitely a bigger part of this story that it was in the first two. I'm eager to read the rest of the series so I hope he writes them quickly. And just to add my two cents, Lenny needs to live!!!!

Now it's getting creepy. Definitely amped up the sci fi vibe. What's really cool is this band of heroes that have emerged. I like it.

On Again, Off Again

Just finished the second book which, for a quasi-science fiction book, kept the tension and unusual twists and turns going non-stop. The third book has increased in price from $.99 to $2.99...enough to encourage me to move on to other adventures. However, if you enjoy science fiction, I would suggest you try this series.

Writing slightly improved over the previous titles. Still thin in detail. There's just no depth to any of it.

The first book had a good amount of the beginning of the second book so I continued on because it had more excitement.(Might contain spoilers) However after the initial excitement I kind of hit a wall as it slowed a bit. There were a lot of people coming and going, many dying having gone out scavenging and not returned. New people arrive and they are killed as quickly as you get to know them which in an apocalypse is standard fare. Lenny and Rebeca are still together and discover the sanctuary they sought was not exactly safe but stay to help. They turn out to be the best of group when it come to protection, shooting and tracking and are consequently called constantly for either scouting, scavenging or retrieval of information or lost personnel. They learn that the invasion of the US was not by a foreign country but possibly aliens which Lenny doesn't really believe and tends to dismiss anyone that has info considering them insane especially when cloning of people is mentioned. There is a little too much dissension in the group and the constant infighting gets a bit tiring. Rebeca now appears more callus, cold and calculating which Lenny should have picked up on and Mark is just a big A hole and much of the problem when it comes to the stability of the group. The situation is dire but Lenny is still not convinced aliens are behind the downfall of the government. They are attacked and forced to leave and meet someone else that convince them to head to D.C. where help can be found. They are attacked on the road by both the unknown/unseen enemy and humans who have taken advantage of the situation. Escaping both and finding refuge in the middle of nowhere allows for a small respite. However it made no sense to me when being chased from one place to another barely ahead of a relentless enemy, whether human or alien, and at least three people with military experience in the group, they do not place guards while others rest and at one point even get intoxicated. And yes they are forced out of their safe haven. Alien scouts are also on their trail appearing to be a cross between a bear and Big Foot and are more like blood hounds that attack, kill and or kidnap people. I do admit that I almost lost interest until they arrive at their destination. It is the best part of the story as more is revealed about the 'pod people'. There is a very well written, intense escape and car chase and ends with a better cliff hanger which had me going to Amazon to download the next installment. I have to know....

Just keeps getting better

This is the next book in the series and it was another great read . A page turner from the start . This series just keeps getting better and is full of twists and turns that you don't see coming. Bad part is I have to wait until I can buy the next one and that stinks because it will be a little while. But give the series a try but make sure you get a few of them they are that good. A definite page turner. Great job Mr. Freeman.
