A highly recommended read and undoubtedly his best work to date, Voices of Victory deserved to follow last years D-Day: The Unheard Tapes straight into the best sellers list.
Clearly well researched and crafted with care and attention, - not too “military”, not seeking to glorify or horrify, a very poignant, balanced and captivating account of the final harsh months of war.
Geraint Jones shows great empathy with all of those whose later interviews are included (and the stories of those many that couldn’t be) and these speak alongside his personal knowledge of the landscape and meticulous attention to detail, to create a truly immersive and compelling read.
A beautiful touch that the epilogue features a ww2 veteran, and a timely reminder of the true meaning of victory, and it’s cost.

These eyewitness accounts of the last months of fighting in Germany itself, have been transcribed from audio interviews. It makes for interesting reading but it does become repetitive after a while. It would have been even more interesting if it had been combined with more stories from the German side. This is still a very important book that shows that victory over Germany was hard-fought up to the last days of the war.
