Rachael lives by the seaside in the north west of England with her family and two very enthusiastic spaniels. The Winter Cottage is a beautiful, cosy read/listen, perfect for winter days.
When Rillas father passes away, she returns to his cottage in the little village of Applemore in the Scottish Highlands to settle his affairs and say goodbye. Rilla wants to get things over with as quickly as possible, and Applemore holds many hidden away memories and emotions from her past.
Lachlan has also recently lost his father and is in the midst of sorting out his (less-than-pleased-with) inheritance and deciding what to do with the house left to him and his sisters'.
Lachlan and Rilla haven't seen each other in over a decade, and when they are thrown back into each others orbit, nothing will be the same for them.
This was such a sweet and cosy book to listen to, and I loved meeting each character within it. I'll definitely be continuing this series for another fix of warmth, cosyness, and cuteness.

After Rilla’s father dies, she leaves New England and travels to the Scottish Highlands, determined to quickly sort out his effects, make arrangements regarding Ambleside Cottage and then leave again. This was a place well known and loved as a child it hold memories of times playing with her sister Sally and the Fraser children, but for various reasons Rilla has not been back for some time. While there, she reconnects with Lachlan Fraser and his sisters Charlotte, Beth and Polly. The three sisters love the run down Ambleside House but Lachlan is less than thrilled about his inheritance of the estate and the old house and the extent of repairs needed. But how can he get rid of the property and destroy the dreams of his sisters, even though common sense is telling him the logical thing to do is sell it? What he doesn’t count on is their absolute attachment to Ambleside House and determination to keep it. And he never factored in romance either. Added to that neither he nor Rilla expected to uncover the secret from the past they did. What difference to the situation does that make?
This was an entertaining read. Though somewhat predictable it has engaging characters and a great setting. I enjoyed it. While I haven’t read any other books by this author I would happily read more of her work. This light, easy to read novel is one many readers will enjoy. It is also the beginning of a series about Applemore Bay.

I’ve fallen in love with Applemore. This is such a feel good story with brilliantly warm and friendly characters and a beautiful setting of the Scottish Highlands. Rachael Lucas writes such fabulously warm-hearted stories and this one wraps around you like a snuggly blanket. A wonderful read about second chances and making the most out of life.

Even though it’s only just autumn it’s not too soon to think about winter and this was the perfect read to get me in the mood for cosy nights.

I got lost in the romantic essence of this read. Although it’s painful to begin with as you understand the character development of the back ground to where they are now. The setting for this read is perfect the author does a magical job at making you feel like you are at every place described.

This book gave me so many butterflies so many wants to know more about every character situated in the book not just Rilla and Lachlan. I could just imagine this branching out into the siblings own individual story.

You get a real feel of the importance of family throughout this that makes you feel content and warm inside. I really would love a cottage of my own. Everyone loves a book with a doggo too. So this one stood out for me. This is the perfect read to break up my streak of horrors for this month so far.

If you love an ending that leaves you feeling like your on cloud nine this is definitely the book for you.

3,5⭐️ Ik vond dit wel een oké boek, niks bijzonders maar het las wel vlot door het weinig aantal pagina's en de fijne schrijfstijl.

Het boek gaat over Rilla die na lange tijd terugkeert naar Applemore omdat haar vader overleden is en zij het huisje waar hij verbleef leeg gaat halen. In de tussentijd komt zij terug in contact met Lachlan en zijn drie zussen, Polly, Charlotte en Beth. De twee families hadden vroeger een hechte band en spendeerde veel dagen samen in Applemore.

Je ziet dat de band tussen de twee families en aldus de personages langzaam terug opbouwt, wat uiteraard heel mooi is om te zien. Toch vond ik dit boek qua verhaal enorm sloom. Er gebeurde niet veel en ik vond dat de focus op de verkeerde gebeurtenissen lag in dit boek. Zo lag de focus meer op de twee cottages in Applemore dan op de romance die normaal centraal had moeten staan in dit verhaal. Dit zorgde er dan ook voor dat ik af en toe mijn interesse verloor tijdens het lezen. Een sidestory doorheen het verhaal is helemaal prima, maar het moet niet de belangrijke factoren in het boek overschaduwen.

De personages vond ik op zich wel leuk al vond ik het enorm frustrerend dat toen er eindelijk wat romance aan te pas kwam, deze ook weer enorm snel terug uitdoofde... ja ik spreek dan over een nutteloze third act.

Een aantal positieve elementen vond ik het landschap en de levendige schrijfstijl van de auteur. De wintervibes in dit boek maakte het verhaal leuker. Ik vond dat de auteur Applemore zo gedetailleerd omschrijft dat ik het gevoel kreeg dat ik zelf in Applemore aanwezig was!

Om kort samen te vatten: ik vond het wel een leuk boek dat zich afspeelt op een leuke locatie maar ik zou 'm niet aanraden als je echt zoekt naar een leuke winterromance want dat was dit boek totaal niet. De romance ligt veel meer op de achtergrond dat je zou willen. Toch maakt de fijne schrijfstijl, het weinig aantal pagina's en de omgeving van het boek veel goed!

This is the perfect book to snuggle up with at this time of year.

It's the first book I've read by Rachael, but certainly not the last. This was a beautiful read, set in Appledore, a tiny village in the glorious Scottish Highlands.

A fantastic, feel good read, full of warmth, romance & everything cosy!

The characters were all so lovable & I'm already looking forward to my next venture into Applemore.

Another lovely Christmassy romance, I’m zipping through them this year. I listened to the audio book and the narration was good. I loved Lachlan Frazer’s soft Scottish accent, which reminded me a little of Ewan McGregor. A great little story with some wonderful characters situated in a perfect Scottish setting. This is a short and simple read but heartwarming and compelling and perfect for this time of year. I liked the author’s easy and fluid writing style and will definitely be reading more of this series.

This is a cute romcom, with lot’s of winter vibes. But the focus is as much on the plot, as it is on the romance. Besides it being a cosy read and all, I missed some more romance building throughout the book. I was invested in the book, but I wasn’t drawn to finish it asap.

Even so, I finished it quite fast, and it’s a good read for this season.

In de proloog van ‘Het winterhuisje in Applemore’ leren we meteen hoofdpersonage Rilla kennen. Ze is net aangekomen in Applemore. Rachael Lucas maakt een mooie schets van de cottage waar Rilla’s vader woonde, waardoor je al een vleugje van de sfeer in Applemore meekrijgt door die eerste pagina’s. In de volgende hoofdstukken maken we kennis met het andere hoofdpersonage, Lachlan. We komen de drijfveren voor zijn terugkeer naar Applemore te weten. Die korte voorstelling van beide personages en hun levens zijn genoeg om het verhaal boeiend te starten, want je wilt weten hoe ze zullen omgaan met hun problemen in hun geboortedorp.

Door de afwisselende vertelperspectieven krijgen we een uitgebreide inkijk in zowel Lachlans als Rilla’s gedachtegang. De personele hij-verteller is relatief afstandelijk, dus het is wel moeilijk om tot het duo door te dringen. Beiden hebben herkenbare trekjes en emoties, maar ze voelen wat vlak aan. Ook al hebben ze allebei best een pittig verleden achter de rug, toch komt de verwachte diepgang niet helemaal tot z’n recht. Dat komt vooral omdat Lachlan en Rilla niet zo’n duidelijke emotionele evolutie doormaken in het verhaal. De chemie tussen hen lijkt alleen gebaseerd op wat ze voelden voor elkaar tijdens hun jeugd en is zomaar weer aanwezig als ze elkaar na al die jaren terugzien. Dat voelt toch wat te geforceerd. Rachael Lucas doet zeker mooie pogingen door bv. Rilla raad te laten geven aan Lachlan over een belangrijke beslissing in zijn leven, maar dan nog komt de band tussen beide personages niet sterk genoeg over. Op zich snap je wel waarom ze iets voor elkaar voelen, want ze zijn allebei hun ouders verloren en begrijpen elkaar daardoor. Rilla’s moeder leeft wel nog, maar het contact is verwaterd en de moeder van Lachlan stierf vroeg. Het is alleen jammer dat de sterkere chemie tussen Lachlan en Rilla ontbreekt.

Lucas maakt het echter goed door de interessante nevenpersonages. De dynamiek tussen hen en de hoofdpersonages is prima en geeft het verhaal de nodige actie, zeker op momenten dat het dreigt te kabbelen. Familie is één van de hoofdthema’s van het boek en Lucas heeft mooi uitgewerkt dat familie vaak meer is dan een bloedband. Soms voel je je gewoon thuis bij mensen en dat gevoel is heel geloofwaardig op papier gezet. De zussen van Lachlan, de andere dorpsbewoners… iedereen heeft z’n eigen rol in het dorp en past perfect in het plaatje.

De sfeerschepping in Applemore is dan ook het sterkste punt van het boek. Lucas omschrijft heel levendig de omgeving en de gezelligheid van het dorp, waardoor je alles zo voor je ziet. Ze overstelpt je niet met details, zo heb je ook nog genoeg ruimte voor je eigen verbeelding. Applemore voelt echt sprookjesachtig aan. Eigenlijk vergeet je daardoor de kleine inhoudelijke foutjes, zoals de sympathieke Joan die Rilla hielp met opruimen in de cottage, terwijl er enkele pagina’s verder staat dat Rilla Joan al een tijdje niet meer gezien had. Sommige scènes zijn iets te snel afgewerkt, wat wrang aanvoelt met de vage tijdsindeling. Daarnaast beïnvloeden de ietwat lange hoofdstukken je leestempo.

Pas na de helft ben je eigenlijk voldoende ondergedompeld in het verhaal om er echt van te genieten. Het einde bezorgt je een voldaan gevoel en door de hints die je hebt opgemerkt, ben je benieuwd welke personages zullen schitteren in de volgende delen van de serie. De typische ingrediënten van een feelgoodboek zoals een flinke portie humor en sterke chemie tussen de hoofdpersonages mogen hier dan wel ontbreken, toch is ‘Het winterhuisje van Applemore’ een geslaagd begin van de ‘Applemore Bay’-serie.

Conclusie
3,5 sterren
‘Het winterhuisje in Applemore’ is een fijn tussendoortje. De sfeerschepping is uitstekend en daardoor vergeet je dat de sympathieke personages ietwat vlak zijn.

Rilla has gone to the Highlands to clear out her dad’s cottage after he passes away. She hasn’t been to Applemore in 18 years and is surprised to be flooded with memories of childhood summers she and her sister spent there with their dad, playing with the Fraser siblings who live at the manor house. As she tries to unlock the door to the cottage she’s helped by Lachlan Fraser, her old teenage crush. But maybe that crush isn’t so old after all.

This is a sweet story and it was fun to get to know the four Fraser siblings. I started the series with the last book, Christmas at Applemore, and met the Fraser’s then. These can be read as standalone books, but I’d recommend starting at the beginning because I found the characters a little confusing when I read the last book first.

I loved Lachlan as the romantic interest and cheered along his relationship with Rilla. Even though I knew this had a HEA ending, my heart hurt when it looked like they would go their separate ways.

There’s also a surprising twist in the story that made me happy.

This book will make you want to move to the Scottish Highlands, wear a cozy sweater, (or jumper as they say there!) and drink whisky. And get a spaniel. Hugh the dog is the cutest. I’m already getting started on the next book in the series.

Waarom deze score: Een sfeervol en hartverwarmend verhaal met goed uitgewerkte personages en een invoelbare emotionele laag. Ondanks de voorspelbaarheid wist het boek mij te boeien door de prachtige setting en de oprechte thema’s.

Samenvatting:
Na het overlijden van haar vader reist Rilla naar het idyllische Applemore om zijn huis leeg te halen. Hier ontmoet ze Lachlan Fraser, die na jaren terugkeert naar Applemore House, een groot maar vervallen landhuis dat hij met zijn zussen heeft geërfd. Terwijl Lachlan worstelt met familieverantwoordelijkheden en toekomstkeuzes, vinden hij en Rilla steun bij elkaar. Oude vriendschappen en nieuwe kansen komen samen in de betoverende Schotse winter, waarin beiden ontdekken dat thuis meer is dan een plek—het is een gevoel.

Mijn mening:
Schrijfstijl:
Rachael Lucas hanteert een toegankelijke en beeldende schrijfstijl, waardoor zowel de winterse sfeer als de emoties van de personages invoelbaar worden. De derde persoon verleden tijd past goed bij het verhaal, en de humoristische proloog zet meteen de juiste toon.

Verhaallijn:
Hoewel de plot redelijk voorspelbaar is, wordt het verhaal gedragen door de sterke band met de personages. De duo-perspectieven van Lachlan en Rilla zorgen voor afwisseling en verdieping, terwijl het bijverhaal subtiel en ontroerend wordt opgebouwd.

Karakterontwikkeling:
De personages voelen levensecht aan. Rilla’s emotionele reis na het verlies van haar vader en Lachlan’s worsteling met zijn familieverantwoordelijkheden worden op een invoelende manier uitgewerkt. Ook de bijpersonages krijgen voldoende aandacht, wat nieuwsgierig maakt naar hun verhalen in eventuele vervolgdelen.

Thema’s en boodschap:
Het verhaal behandelt thema’s als rouw, familiebanden, en persoonlijke groei. Hoewel het boek niet intens emotioneel is, zijn de gevoelens en dilemma’s van de personages invoelbaar en herkenbaar. De boodschap dat thuis een gevoel is, wordt mooi verweven in het verhaal.

Emotionele impact:
Het boek roept geen extreme emoties op, maar voelt warm en geruststellend. De balans tussen luchtigheid en gevoelige thema’s maakt het een aangename leeservaring.

Conclusie:
Het winterhuisje in Applemore is een fijn feelgood-verhaal dat luchtigheid combineert met invoelbare emoties en gevoelige thema’s. De personages zijn zo goed uitgewerkt dat je echt om hen gaat geven, wat de voorspelbaarheid van het verhaal ruimschoots goedmaakt. Voor mij had het verhaal een extra persoonlijk tintje door het camperleven, wat me aan mijn zusje deed denken. Dit gaf het boek een extra laag van herkenning en plezier. Ik kijk met veel enthousiasme uit naar het tweede deel!

Ši knyga krito į akį dėl labai gero vertinimo ir tikrai manęs nenuvylė. Istorija apie Lachlan ir Rila, abu sugrįžusius į Applemore kotedžą dėl skirtingų priežasčių. Rilos tėtis mirė ir ji turinti atlaisvinti kotedžą, kurį nuomavosi iš Lachlan šeimos. Lachlan bando gelbėti kotedžą, kurį pastatė jo šeima, bet dėl finansinių bėdų neaišku, ar pavyks tai padaryt. Pora nesimatė 15 metų ir pasirodo, paauglystėje jautė vienas kitam didelę simpatiją.

Man ši knyga buvo tikras "small town novel" pavyzdys. Maža, bet tvirta bendruomenė, mažas miestelis, didelė šeima, jaukios vakarienės ir kartu praleistas laikas. Buvo labai jauku ir šilta klausantis šios istorijos. Gera žinia, kad tai yra pirma serijos dalis, tad neužilgo pradėsiu klausyti dar vieną kalėdišką istoriją.

It was ok. Really really cozy, cute and predictable, perhaps too much. Nobody has a personality, there's no real conflict and it so weirdly written I have a feeling nothing actually happened. The narrator had thick accent, english being my second language, there were times I didn't understand whole sentences. Also, a lot of editing mistakes. I'll probably continue this series when I need to rest my brain.

There was nothing extraordinary about how the story of this progressed but what made it still a 4 star read for me was the absolutely gorgeous setting and the down to earth characters. I could feel the warmth in their personalities and the connections developed were genuine, they felt real as opposed to some of the other books I've read where everything is just too forced. The simplicity of the book was it's biggest selling point and it made me wanna visit the place tbh!

Door dit boek heen lees je over een heerlijk winters dorpje. Perfect voor deze winterse koude maanden.

De schrijfstijl is erg makkelijk en fijn geschreven. Door de fijne schrijfstijl vlieg je door het boek heen

Alle personages zijn fijn omschreven en heel leuk hoe er in dit boek een aparte band word omschreven met de bijpersonages. Elk personages heeft zo zijn eigen verhaal en dit word erg mooi verwerkt.

Dit is een hartverwarmend, knus, liefdevol boek over liefde, vriendschap en familie.

I really liked this cosy winter book, it’s set in the highlands of Scotland so I already had chilly vibes but Rachael delivers such welcoming characters that you soon warm up! In between reading this I watched the film ‘Trading Christmas’ and I could see a real likeness between Lachlan to Charles and Rilla to Faith. I found that this helped me to really envisage myself there with the characters and I felt like I knew them.

Lachlan’s three sisters are just the nicest girls and welcome Rilla back to Applemore and her dad’s cottage as if it was only a few days that she’s been gone rather than a few years. It’s safe to say Rilla and Lachlan hadn’t forgotten each other though 🙊😉 but a little bit of pushing from a friendly pup can never harm can it!

When Lachlan first talks about having to sell the estate I had it set in my mind that things wouldn’t go quite as he’d planned, but I definitely didn’t foresee all events that happened… some good and some bad! The gin and farm shop were probably my favourite bits though because they just sound amazing. I love the idea of being able to shop for real local produce close to home and would love it if there was somewhere like this near me in real life…

I really liked reading about Beth as well and I think it added that bit extra to the book, it wasn’t all happy and lovely and there were quite a few moments where I really felt for the Frazers but this was the biggest. The fact that she was able to finally let out what she was holding in and then seeing how much of an effect this had on her instantaneously was pretty special. Plus I cannot wait to see what’s in store for her next but with Rachael’s next book in the series being about The Flower Farm I’ve got a feeling I won’t have to wait too long!

This book is simply fantastic and I didn’t want to put it down was such a great read full of romance and learning about the past and settling down it’s a warm and heartwarming read which you won’t want it to end.
Rilla looses her father and heads back to the village of Applemore in Scotland to clear his house out. She is certain it is only going to be a quick visit so she can continue her travels. Then you have Lachlan who also has lost his father and inherited a lot but wants to return to applemore to do the place up to sell it but his sisters won’t be happy as they love their home. As they both head back and meet up they soon start to both get friendly and remember each other from when they grew up and that they had feeling for each other but they are trying to hide it. Rilla learns things about her father and soon learns she has to open up about her feelings but will she in time or will she leave the village heartbroken and will Lachlan decode to stay or sell and will he be happy.
