A hopeful and uplifting wartime saga about one woman’s resilience and courage.
Devonshire, 1945.
The war is over and the celebrations are in full swing in the dancehall of the quaint village of Ledburton.
Evie Clark, the quietest of the Land Girls, has caught the eye of the handsome Italian POW, Giorgio Zingaretti. Giorgio is everything Evie’s controlling husband is not — kind-hearted, gentle and he adores her.
After they dance the night away, Evie and Giorgio continue to meet in secret. But the past is about to destroy their romance.
Evie’s abusive husband returns from the war and rips her away from the arms of her new beau.
Evie must turn to her friends and fellow Land Girls for safety — Can they help her escape her traumatic past and finally find happiness?
As I cannot find the third book in the series(Alice's girls), I was delighted to find that this one tidied up all the loose ends. With the showing of such programmes as Land Girls and Home Fires, this series is certainly topical.
I really was intrigued to know what happened Alice's girl's and this book explained it all perfectly, what a truly brilliant book this is the last in a trilogy so worth buying the books are worth every penny, you will not be disappointed
I've really enjoyed this series. Although the books can be read as one offs it is much better to read them in sequence. There is a lot of moving back and forth in the stories between how different characters see various events or whether something is being told as it happens or being remembered, sometimes years later, which can be a bit confusing until you get used to it.
Evie and the previous three books give an insight into how people coped with the war years when once they were sixteen they were forced into war work. They could either enlist, go down the mines or do other noncombatative tasks. For women that included taking on work which has previously been considered men's work. It meant enormous changes for people.
So while reading this I quickly realized that this is actually something of an epilogue book, following on from 3 previous books in the Land Girl series, so I came into this from the complete wrong direction! And I read it all anyway and now I don't really feel the need to go back and read the previous books, any information that you need for a character was provided in such a way that I now know the outcome of all the girls involved, so I don't think I'll bother.
It's an ok book tho, entertaining and probably made better if you read them in the correct order!
Loved this book about Evie, a somewhat timid mouse to begin with but then becomes a strong young lady going through many challenges. The whole series was wonderful...Thank you for a great read.
