Rate this book
Their love was meant to last forever. But forever is only the beginning.

Erin Hanson thought the hardest part was over. With Amelia by her side, she finally embraced the eternal love they once believed impossible.

But as Erin’s thirtieth birthday approaches, so does her transformation from human to vampire—and with it, terrifying, unpredictable changes that threaten everything.

Desperate for answers, Erin and Amelia journey to the misty shores of Ireland, seeking the only known couple who successfully bridged the human-vampire divide. There, they uncover an ancient prophecy—one that could hold the key to Erin’s fate and the sanity of the Fallen.

As tensions rise between humans and vampires and enemies emerge from the shadows, Erin and Amelia must navigate a dangerous web of secrets and lies that could change the future of both worlds.

Will their bond be strong enough to face what’s coming? Or will the price of forever be more than they can bear?

Waiting for Eternity is a slow-burn sapphic paranormal romance full of fated mates, ancient myths, and high-stakes love. Perfect for fans of forbidden love and vampire lore.

The Loch and Key series by Alyson Root are quick, enjoyable books that put a new twist on vampires and vampiric lore that I absolutely gulped down! It’s important to read Risking Immortality first because Waiting for Eternity is a continuation of the story in book one and, while it could be read on its own, just won’t have the same impact. (Warning - spoilers ahead if you haven’t read book one yet.)

Erin is a human. Or at least she was born as one. But her whole life and world turned upside when she met Amelia Loch - a vampire. Amelia and Erin are fated mates - destined for one another and now bound together for eternity. Or so they hope. But no one is certain what is going to happen once Erin turns 30. Will she transform into a vampire and become immortal? Or remain human? Before they have a chance to find out, changes begin happening to Erin that are even more unexplainable, creating more questions than answers.

The more these changes begin to take place, the more terrified Erin gets of who she is becoming. No one is certain what these changes mean or if they are good or bad. But as other events begin to happen, it seems there may be more to these changes. And the more Erin learns, the more secrets she uncovers. Erin doesn’t want to be a savior. She just wants to enjoy life with Amelia. But Erin doesn’t realize Amelia has begun to change too. And together is the only way they will get through whatever lies ahead.

I really enjoyed book one, but book two was even better! I love the world building Alyson has done with this series - the different backstory to who vampires are, the stories of fated mates and fallen vampires and ancient prophecies. It was a unique and fascinating story line that kept me hooked from the start. I stayed up late finishing because I couldn’t put it down and needed to know what happened! I also love the bond between Erin and Amelia and watching the ways in which that bond evolves and strengthens throughout this book. The love and desire they feel for each other is palpable any time they are in the same room, and even when they aren’t thanks to some new found abilities! They are the perfect mixture of sweet and spicy and there are plenty of both deliciously steamy scenes as well as tender heartfelt moments.

Risking Immortality was told from Amelia’s POV, so I really enjoyed getting to hear Erin’s POV in this book. It gave me an opportunity to get to know and understand Erin better, especially as she began to go through all these changes. And without giving any spoilers - let me just say that this book will help you understand the title of the series and choice of color for the covers! And I cannot wait for book three to come out - I know it’s going to be thrilling!

I received an advance copy from the author. This review is voluntary and my honest opinion.

My goodness but I do love Erin and Amelia. The first book in the Loch & Key series was told from Amelia’s perspective; Waiting for Eternity gives us Erin’s, and she’s just as lovely a spitfire as ever. While Amelia has successfully attained immortality and the pair are hopeful that they’ve solved the puzzle of how Erin can join her when she reaches her 30th birthday, Erin starts to notice some strange changes happening and things get a bit more serious as the story progresses.

Erin starts to feel out of control, and she has to learn to open up and trust those around her—and vice versa. Never fear, though: the Loch family is there as always to lovingly support the couple, and we get more of Barty and Anya as they step up to help. We have a few new characters who make an appearance as well, and Mack is back!

There’s less spice here than Risking Immortality but it feels like enough, and the connection is just as wonderful. While the previous volume focused on the developing relationships, this installment is more focused on the story, and it works. The plot is so interesting, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next!

I received a free ARC from the Sapphic Author Collective, but my review is unbiased and left voluntarily.

Wow! I could not put this book down! The first book was in Amelia’s pov and here we get Erin’s. We get a quick recap adding some insights into how Erin was really feeling from when they first met at the club. From there, it is non stop gooey goodness, surprises and adventure. The writing is on point. The spice is glorious and flows well the story and characters. There are no loose ties which I very much appreciate but also a clear indication of there being more to the story.

Sequels don’t often live up to their og but this is not the case here. I knew it would be good and getting more Amelia and Erin was enough of an incentive to read this. It wasn’t good. It was fantastic! If you like sapphic vampires, if you liked book 1, if you like this author…even if you are unsure you should definitely give these a read! It will be worth your time!!

this book is so so good!! I loved all of the action in this book, I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, this series is fantastic!
Erin and Amelia’s bond is so beautiful I love how it evolves in this book, they are one together and the connection they have keeps growing, even when you think they couldn’t be more connected and they couldn’t love each other more, they keep getting stronger together and it’s so beautiful to read.
I loved how we got Erin’s perspective this time, we got to see her grow and adapt and make her own choices, she cares so much for everyone and I loved seeing her thought process.
I love the Loch family, their families bond is also so special. I love how we got more Lucille this time, I love her, I love her relationship with Amelia and how protective she is of her family. Harlan and Victoria are such good characters, I love them, I love their leadership and their trust in their family, their bond with everyone is so strong and you can tell how much they are respected.
I loved this book so so much, I love this version of vampires, it’s so interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Omg! I thought Book 1 was perfection. But Book 2???!!! DOUBLE perfection!! I thoroughly enjoyed this, maybe a tad more than the 1st one simply because in Book 1, I had wished that it had Erin's POV, too. Imagine my utter delight to find out that Book 2 IS Erin's POV!

Root must have structured her trilogy that way - Amelia's POV in Book 1, which makes sense since it's about her journey of falling in love with a human and her integration into Erin's life and vice versa. Then in Book 2, it naturally is about Erin because of the discovery at the end of Book 1. And finally Book 3 has BOTH POVs!! I'm currently reading it and it's another whopper! Love, love, love Root's narrative style and originality! I'm still amazed at her ingenuity in coming up with such an original, refreshing, totally grounded new vampire origin story, I simply love it!

Ok, back to Book 2. First, the title. Again, Root came up with yet another aesthetic title that evokes the imagery and emotions of what the story would entail. And the art, much like Book 1, is another striking piece. I absolutely adore it.

Root didn't waste any time delving into Erin's story, her connection to the vampire mythology, her bond with Amelia, their families and more curiously, the fate of the human and vampire species. Again, Root's utter originality in expanding the vampire lore within the Loch and Key series is simply astounding. I've read a lot of vampire-themed stories and 9 out of 10 times their origins are usually the same with minor tweaks here and there.

But Alyson Root, bless her, manages to turn the entire vampire origin story on its head with an extraordinary origin that's so visceral it's like real life! Truly my favourite vampire story now! Needless to say, I devoured the entire book in one sitting at the shortest amount of time and dare I say, pounced onto the 3rd book (which I'm almost done as I type!) immediately!

The chemistry between Erin and Amelia just kept building up in intensity, but rather than like in Book 1 where it was tentative, exploratory, lustful, sexy and seductive like any fresh, new love, their relationship in Book 2 was at a deeper level, a level of intimacy that delved into not only the physical but their innermost emotional nuances, too.

The writing is incredibly grounded in authentic realism especially the dialogue, the inner thoughts about love, fear, anxiety, that intensely fierce sense of protection for each other that can only come from the deepest level of love and care between 2 bonded people who are the love of each other's lives.

The emotions experienced by Erin and Amelia, together as a couple and separately as their own person, were written with such realistic intensity, and with Sadie Provost's remarkable performance drawing in all the emotional depth and nuances out of Roots' words, the whole story becomes grounded, anchored in realistic integrity!

Provost really brings to life the very essence of Erin's transformation in body, mind, and soul. That authenticity that Provost's vocal mastery evokes when guiding us toward Erin and Amelia's path, their destiny, the singular love and devotion they have for each other, and the power of a family united, be it by blood or found/chosen, is nothing short of phenomenal. Provost's quiet, calm and deeply engaging voice elevates the strength of Root's story to another level of deep resonance and reverberation.

Erin's journey of self-discovery to eventual reconciliation and acceptance in this sequel reminds me of Luke Skywalker's in "The Empire Strikes Back." Reflective, introspective, contemplative. Through Root's rhythmic narrative and Provost's engrossing delivery that tugs at the heart, we get to experience Erin and Amelia's next stage in their journey, learn more about the mythology that just gets more intriguing as we explore deeper and discover more.

I can't get enough of the chemistry between Erin and Amelia as their relationship enters a deeper, more intimate level, physically, emotionally and spiritually. And Provost delivers their utterly sensual, intimate scenes with intoxicating effect! Sizzling! Insatiable! The sequel is truly another level of storytelling by Root with more intensity, more layers to unpack, just more.. but she never loses focus on the core of the story. And Provost's magnetic delivery is just the bee's knees to not just this story, but the entire trilogy altogether, even if the 3rd audiobook hasn't released yet! I just know it!

Last but not least, I must mention Erin's ex, Mack. Aw, although her character was not painted in a good light back in Book 1, I had a feeling she'd be back into the fold and voila! I'm so glad because I felt kinda bad for her in Book 1. I'm so glad about her in Book 2! Yay!! Mack and Jordan. That's all you need to know. Read or listen to find out more! All I can say is, you won't be disappointed!

This book is a must-read and the audiobook at must-listen! If you haven't read or listen to Book 1 yet, I'd strongly advise you do so since Book 2 is a continuation.

On to finish up Book 3 for me whilst waiting in anticipation for Sadie Provost to bring the trilogy to a close! YES!!

Waiting for Eternity by Alyson Root is a fantastic, atmospheric sequel that delivers everything I wanted and more from The Loch & Key series. Continuing to follow Erin and Amelia’s story—rather than switching to a new couple like many romance series do—gives this book an emotional continuity that hits deep. You’re not just picking up a new book; you’re reuniting with characters who’ve grown, hurt, healed, and loved through real stakes (pun very much intended).

Erin and Amelia’s relationship is tested in new, intense ways this time around. As Erin nears her 30th birthday—and the looming deadline for her transformation into a vampire—things start to spiral. Her body’s not responding the way it should, strange changes are surfacing, and what should be a beautiful transition becomes something far more dangerous. What makes this twist work so well is how grounded it feels in emotional truth. This isn’t just about fangs and immortality—it’s about trust, fear, and the kind of love that demands sacrifice.

The trip to Ireland? Chef’s kiss. The landscape, the mythology, the secrets hiding in the shadows—it all builds this eerie, magical tension that perfectly contrasts the grounded intimacy between Erin and Amelia. The addition of an ancient prophecy and a new layer of vampiric lore keeps the worldbuilding feeling fresh and original. Seriously, this is not your recycled vampire romance. Alyson Root has created something that’s familiar in all the comforting ways (yes, eternal love! yes, supernatural danger!) but also completely her own. From how vampire bonds work to the family dynamics and even the blood lore—it’s all new, compelling, and totally addictive.

And I have to shout out Sadie Provost, whose narration continues to be one of the strongest parts of this series. She breathes life into these characters—Erin’s vulnerability, Amelia’s quiet strength, the looming threat of the unknown—it’s all so vivid in her performance. I’m always impressed with how she manages to bring nuance and warmth to even the most tension-filled moments.

If you’re already a fan of book one, this sequel will pull you even deeper into a world that’s moody, mysterious, and filled with aching devotion. And if you’re new to the series? Start with Loch & Key—you’re in for something truly special.

I’m absolutely hooked and already counting the days until the next audiobook drops. Erin and Amelia have my whole immortal heart.

Erin … Human and bonded to one who is not. She wants forever, she wants safety, and she wants security … for those like her, for those like Amelia, and for those whose failure to find their fated mate cost them everything. Can Erin and Amelia find the traitors in their midst, or will they be “Waiting for Eternity” for their dreams to become reality … I finished listening hours ago and I am still reeling! This story has me firmly in its grasp, taking on a life of its own. I say has, not had, because I just cant let it go! Beautifully plotted, and beautifully written, this one got ahold of me and just did not let up! The fully developed characters are brilliantly unique and truly unforgettable! From their growth and development as the story progresses, to their realistic emotional depth, they resonate as REAL! Some I loved, some had me wavering until they “wised up” as it were, while others … well, as they said of Marie Antoinette … I’ll hold the names close to avoid spoilers but I’m sure as you’ll see what I mean! The one thing I can be perfectly clear on is the absolutely stunning narration that brought these beautifully crafted characters and this mind blowing story to life! Every character is uniquely voiced WITH a vocal selection perfectly suited to their personality, AND be still my heart, that voicing is not only emotionally perfect, BUT perfectly consistent throughout! The pacing is comfortable to the ear regardless of listening speed chosen, and the timing is absolutely flawless! Every word, was crystal clear, easily understandable, and perfectly accented when called for, truly paying homage to the wondrous talent of a gifted author! Easily, FIVE fantastic stars across all categories. This one will stay with me a long, long time!

What a great sequel!
There are so many things you don't expect!
We experience the development of Erin into the most beautiful mate for Amelie and so much more.
The two are blissfully happy to have found each other and are just waiting for Erin to change.
Vampires in this series are really something else and still fulfill some of the already known characteristics.
It is of course different to read it from the perspective of a human who will sooner or later and hopefully successfully become a vampire.
In my opinion, everything that happened next was thought out, fast paced absolutely brilliant.
Fresh and new!
Despite the fact that it happens quickly, it's quite comprehensible and there are enough questions that remain unanswered and i definitely want to have them answered.
As expected, they are extremely hot together and so there is enough spice!
I am very happy to read about the other Loch family members, how close they are and how they are there for each other even when things get uncomfortable.
But Mack's new love made me just as happy!

Now I am waiting patiently for book three … well, rather impatiently 😁
Thanks so much to the Author Alyson Root for this amazing Story and the Arc!

I have been eagerly awaiting Waiting for Eternity since absolutely devouring book one, Risking Immortality, and it did not disappoint!

This time around we are treated to Erin's viewpoint, as she continues to grapple with her introduction to the world of vampires, the possibility of being destined for more, and her role in a growing conflict.

I couldn't put this book down. It's Alyson at her storytelling best, with the dashes of humour and a bit of silliness we love too. There is also a lot of spice, oh boy is there spice. Beloved side characters reappear, joined by some new ones, and the story moves along at such a cracking pace that you have to keep turning the pages to find out what's next for our beloved heroines.

If you enjoy vampires, sapphic tales, and a read that puts the fun in reading, then you'll enjoy Waiting for Eternity and The Loch & Key series!

I am very thankful Alyson won't be keeping us waiting an eternity until book three of the series, Fighting for Infinity, which is due in March 2025. I cannot wait to hear more from Amelia and Erin and to see how it all ends!

Waiting for Eternity is the second book in The Loch & Key series set in a world in which vampires exist. The first, Risking Immortality, was from Amelia's point of view. This one is from Erin's point of view. As Erin turns 29, she and Amelia have one year left before Erin, hopefully, transforms into a vampire to join Amelia in immortality. With changes occurring within Erin without explanation, the Lochs and their associates embark upon an adventure to seek answers. The story takes many unexpected turns that kept me reading to find out what would happen next.

This is a fantastic sequel and well worth the read. If you liked the first book in this series, you'll definitely like this one. And if you haven't read Risking Immortality, I highly recommend it, as well. They're well written with fully fleshed characters and great storylines. I can't wait to read the third and final book in this series!

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Not quite as warm and feel good as the first book. Also the expanding world gave way to a predictable 'chosen one' story line with more traditional vampire lore creeping in to the narrative.
Something I really enjoyed about the first book was its riff on vampires and its attempts to ground the narrative and lore.

Erin and Amelia are still wonderful romantic leads and their love/banter is still a highlight. They are also still sexually insatiable as they were in the first book so the spice (if you like it) is very much still there.

I'm very curious to see how this all wraps up in the third book, but I wish this had been more like Her French connection series and been another cozy sexy romance set in the world of the first book.

Not to say I didn't enjoy the book I reeally love my time with it, but the shift from sexy romance to chosen one thriller was jarring. I'm sure it will play better on a re read.

This book is a sequel and should be treated as such. While it can be read as a standalone, it is much better enjoyed after reading the 1st book.
From the ending, I gather there is another installment in this series.
As a fantasy book, the author does a tremendous job of defying norms and setting some original views of vampiric culture and biology. In this book, vampires are a different species from humans but they are not the mythical entities humans have been fearing for ages. I loved the original take and the application of science in the semi-realistic setting. The fantastical side of the story increases when the MCs embody a long-lost legend and undergo a magical transformation.

Waiting for Eternity is as good as Risking Immortality. In this second book of The Loch and Key series, there is more action and more intrigue. We still follow Amelia and Erin as they discover the extent of the changes they are going through and the implications they come with.

I love Alyson Root’s takes on vampire history, especially now that we took a deep dive in the story of the Fallen and what can save them.
Erin and Amelia’s love story is not without its obstacles and, trials and tribulations. There were times when I was scared, others when I was sad, and others when I was on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed it quite a lot.
The balance between the more action-packed scenes and the romance is also well-managed, and once again, Sadie Provost’s narration was delightful.

I really can’t wait to read the final book.

Whilst book 1 in this trilogy told the story from Amelia’s perspective, this second one swings around to matters being told from Erin’s. It makes me wonder if book 3 will be told in alternate chapters by each…
A couple of years have passed since the events in book 1 and it starts with Erin musing about what has happened so far and the plan to ‘turn’ her on her 30th birthday. That’s only the start however as matters ‘hit the ground running’ with both Erin and Amelia developing unexpected abilities in this. I’ll not say more to avoid spoilers but just say that this is a fast paced and engaging read which I very much enjoyed. I’m looking forward to reading book 3…

Waiting for Eternity continues Erin and Amelia’s tale from volume one in The Loch & Key Series. This story is told from Erin’s POV as the story arc carries the couple deeper into the world of vampires. As their relationship continues to develop, they begin an evolution into beings that more closely resemble vampires the reader may have encountered elsewhere. Continuing with the environment in the earlier story, there is a large and fully engaged secondary cast. Book 2 is a good read, albeit one with more action and less romance than Book 1. Unfortunately, the plot ends with a cliff-hanger, which may disappoint the casual reader.

I have read the first book Risking Immortality and I loved it and couldn't wait for this second book to come out. As soon as it came out on Jan 1st, I downloaded it right away and devoured it within 6 hours. It was so good. The relationship between the FMCs, the family dynamic/found family, and the plot were just *chef's kiss* I cannot wait for Fighting for Eternity. I've read a lot of books from Alyson Root and I very much have enjoyed this series and everything it has to offer. It's not just romance it's so much more and I'm here for it!!!

I felt like book 1 didnt really need a sequel, but i wouldve been fine with one if it added some fun content, but sadly it didnt do it for me.
The concept of the two MCs transforming into something new could've worked quite well but it went a bit over the top.
Still, it couldve worked

But then ending the book with another cliffhanger that feels really tacked on again is just not good practice imho.

I agree with another review, book 1 shouldve been a standalone and then maybe pick up Macks story in another book in the same universe for example

OMG! Just, wow! Alyson this thriller vampire tale takes a wild turn. Readers this second book of The Loch & Key series is vampires on steroids, no on rocket fuel! Holy moly, Amelia and Erin are all mighty goddesses. I can’t rave enough about this story and I can’t wait to dive into the third of the trilogy. Wake up world, don’t mess with Hanson and Loch! Buckle up, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride, but I have no doubt who will prevail.

Wow!!!

Just excellent!! This vamp series is one of a kind. The two MC's Erin and Amelia are undeniably perfect for one another. And I love the new spin on how these particular vampires live, and what happens on their thirtieth birthday. We need more from the rest of the Loch family, they are their own reality show on steroids. All of them should have there own book. Lol. Awesome read, cannot wait for March.

I am thoroughly invested in these characters. I adore Amelia and Erin and the strong relationship they have. Just when you think you know what's coming you're thrown a curve. The story is very moving and really tugs at my heart. I love the writing and can't wait to read the final story. I need them to have a happy ending after everything they have been through. This is a fantastic series and a must read especially if you like vampire stories. This is like no other.

The MC’s, Erin and Amelia are compelling characters. Erin not quite reached her 30th birthday (transforming into a vampire), when she can be with Amelia. Interesting steps along the way, some not known in advance by Amelia. Two new characters, The Fallen, Christopher and Jordan provide an interesting twist.

This is the kind of book that brings me so much joy! 2 very hot vampires take on the world, the fact that they’re fated mates and so absolutely besotted with each other just adds to the amazingness of this story! Erin and Amelia are officially my favorite vampires now and I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

I love their love and reading a romance like this always makes me feel so in love with life! This book is fast paced and evolves at a mile a minute but the characters are still fully fleshed and well rounded and the story doesn’t feel rushed at all. I’m always amazed at how Alyson can have a whole range of emotions on one page and go from really lighthearted and funny to serious and deep without it feeling forced or unnatural. This was an absolute pleasure to read!
