The Shepherdess: a gothic horror novella

Rate this book
Little Bo Peep meets The Yellow Wallpaper.

It was easy to dismiss it all as forgetfulness. As nothing but a lack of sleep.
Dark shadows at the window, figures in the night.
It was easy to say it was all make believe until I found the first tail on the door.
A scrawny, black thing, it took me some moments to realise what it was.
The dawn was breaking, the winter sun too dull to make out the bloody, red tip until I was inches away from it.
A sign.
A warning.

Miss Salman heralds from a long line of hill farmers. It is her duty to continue their legacy, but with her vindictive grandmother and a never ending winter to contend with, she doesn't know how she will prevail.

Determined to do her father proud, she battles against the elements to keep herself and her flock alive. But someone is sabotaging her efforts. Gates left open, terrified animals, and a brutal death.

Somebody doesn't want her here. They'll do whatever it takes to make sure she doesn't succeed.

The Shepherdess is a psychological suspense novella set in Elizabethan England. A gothic and gruesome tale, it's perfect for a long winter's night.

Another fantastic read from Delphine Woods! Every thing she writes just draws me in, from the characters that stay in my mind long after the book has ended; to the way she describes things.

I am longing to know more after the ending of this one. I feel like it’s such a cliffhanger in a way. The twist at the end got me, Ms Woods is one of the only authors I’ve read in recent years that actually manage to pull off a twist I don’t see coming.

Writing and descriptions were vivid as always with Delphine. The shortest of her books it was non the less a beautiful read - I couldn’t put it down cover to cover and finished it in an hour or so. Highly recommend!
