Obligates of Ærta #3

When Snow Falls

Rate this book
Installment 3 of the Obligates of Ærta Series, an Epic, Steamy, Fated-Mates to Why-Choose Saga!
This is a darker tale that includes mf, mm and mfm situations."Momma/Mother-in-law,

She’s gone.

She stands upon the Arbiter, awaiting judgment. Your dearest friend no longer walks the soil because of something as insignificant as my existence, my divine destiny, if you can call it that.

You raised me to believe that, even in the most difficult of times, if I looked for joy—truly sought it—I would find it, punctuating the seemingly endless dark. But what if I’ve decided to embrace the night—to walk the path of the shadows?

I am full of anger, imbued with grief, and I’m not used to feeling this way.

“Will anger sustain you, Eira? Will it solve your problem?” I can hear you even now. And I know the answer is no, Momma. But ending the man who ripped my heart from my chest, stole the very air from my lungs, would give me an almost tangible sense of fulfillment.

The thought of retribution allows me to keep living—that and... the men I have chosen to love—one who is undoubtedly the sexiest beast to walk the Goddess’s creation. The other who is an angry little man with questionable hygiene and not an iota of fashion sense.

My husband, Ambrose, pins this missive as I am unable to do so. He says, “He would like to meet you relatively soon to assess my future skin care needs.”

(Eira has become irrationally angry as I refuse to begin a new parchment. She feels my concerns are unimportant, which is highly offensive. I will see that she remains healthy, give her snacks, and when my brother returns, he can park his ship in her harbor a few times, and her boil should reduce to a simmer.)

We hope you are well,

His Highness, Ambrose Burchard
Berra Odel Ricard, Heir to
the Throne of Monwyn, Commander
of His Majesties Navy.

And your incensed brat of a daughter, Eira"

E.A. Fortneaux

E.A. Fortneaux: Where cotton candy covers contain questionable content—think mayhem and make-outs, all wrapped in lush worldbuilding. She's the mind behind the Obligates of Ærta series, a spicy romance fantasy filled with fate-bound lovers, emotional disasters... and this other guy who is so frustratingly delicious that he’ll keep you up past your bedtime.

She published her debut, Following the Snow, in 2023 as an homage to the strong women who surrounded her growing up—passionate, proud, and a little unhinged. Since then, she’s been weaving realms with threads of passion and unleashing sequels like Snow on the Summit and When Snow Falls, with more releases on the way.

When she’s not writing, Fortneaux is probably caffeinated and covered in dog hair—gardening, researching medieval nonsense, or laughing with her book besties. She writes stories that feel like home—if home had mood lighting, self-love, and lots of kissing.

This story is fucking EPIC.

The roller coaster of emotions is unlike any other I’ve ever experienced in a book. I cried, I laughed, I guffawed (a lot!). I screamed, I squirmed, I wanted to throw things… this book twisted up my insides and left them in knots! CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS! The laundry list that this book encompasses is a long one but they all have their place to make this story stand out as one people will study 100 years from now!

EA Fortneaux is a wonderful wordsmith who whips fantasy, romance, political intrigue, humor, satire, intricate detail and hotter than sin spice into a tale that will blow your mind!

Read it. You’re welcome.

Wow! Where do I even begin? This third installment invoked so many emotions. As always the banter and humor was on point. The spice was perfection. The roller coaster of plot twists. The emotional turmoil our characters experienced had me feeling it right along with them.

Amazed. Awed. Honored.

E.A. Is a beautiful genius goddess giving us such an incredible journey throughout this series. The ultimate level of inclusivity and body positivity. A masterfully crafted world that perfectly digestible and detailed exquisitely.

I will never stop shouting my love for this series from the rooftops!

EA has done a phenomenal job of continuing her story of Aerta! This third book in her series is *so good*! The characters remain enchanting and hilarious and EA has such a way of writing about grief and sadness while also acknowledging the more silly aspects of life. You do not want to miss out on this Romantasy. It has everything a fantasy needs AND everything a romance needs! The spice is also top-tier. Highly recommend and am already waiting for her next book!!!!

Read if you love:
🧌 epic fantasies
💕 why choose romance
🤪 hilarious FMCs
🤨 questionable scenarios
🌶️ spice
😡 feminine rage

EA Fortneaux is hilarious and it really comes out through her writing. Eira is literally one of my favorite FMCs ever! When Snow Falls sees Eira traversing Ærta with a rather questionable character in tow. Morally grey? More like morally charcoal. We also get a a little bit of Ambrose backstory and a few reunions!

To say that I have been DYING to get my hands on this book would be a SERIOUS understatement. This series has been occupying my mind for the better part of almost two years and I just HAD to be on the team to ARC read for this amazing series.

When Snow Falls is the third book in the Obligates of Aerta series. It follows right along after the events of book 2, wrenching our hearts from the trauma that we, as readers, were left in. On every page you can practically feel the ache and grief these wonderfully written characters are going through. I cried and sobbed through the first five chapters and cursed E.A.'s name with every sentence I read. Definitely make sure to have tissues in reach. You're going to need them.

And yet, in the Goddess fashion, our benevolent author ensures there is a bit of levity in this book. Ambrose, our beautiful Black Bear, brings the laughter and fun into this story that is a much needed reprieve from Eira's grief and pain. He, alongside our Protector, prove that Monwyn men are so much more than the back-ass-ward, thick headed, brutes that we've come to see them as. They are multilayered and so perfectly written that you can't help but swoon and fawn over them every moment they are in the scene.

Now, I'm not going to say things work out for everyone. This wouldn't be an E.A. Fortneaux book if it did. There are moments of turmoil, instances of panic, and parts that I outright screamed at my kindle over. But trust me, my lovely readers. Every one of them is worth it. The sights we get to see, the battles we get to endure, are so brilliantly portrayed that I literally could not put this book down. Seriously. I read it in two days!

Written in these pages is a story that is profound, stunning, wicked, and jaw dropping. All the little threads are coming together into a tapestry so vibrant and bewitching that one can't help but lose themselves in it all. Eira, Cato, and Ambrose show us that love transcends. That love heals. That love can conquer all, should you allow yourself to embrace it. When Snow Falls is a FANTASTIC edition to this series and, while it isn't the end we thought we'd get, I am forever honored to have read it. Way to go, E.A., you've done it again, girl! 💜💜💜

E.A. Fortneaux’s superpower is blending a twisty plot, fantasy elements, wild debauchery, and mayhem into a story that’s both thrilling and entertaining from start to finish.

When Snow Falls is a complete riot. The plot draws you in, with plenty of questions and twists that keep you hooked, while the characters and their dynamics make you invested. But what really stands out in this book is the contrast. The characters can say the most outrageous, smutty things that’ll have you laughing, only to turn around and get unexpectedly vulnerable or emotional. It moves effortlessly from being pure fun to truly heartwarming, and you never know what’s coming next.

The book is also full of representation, woman empowerment, and a sex-positive, body-positive message. The author really embraces inclusivity, leaving no stone unturned.

It’s shocking and wild in the best way, but it also dives into deeper themes like grief, jealousy, and the challenge of living a lifestyle that isn’t always accepted by others. When Snow Falls is a rollercoaster of fun, heart, and of course SPICE.

I’m still not sure how I feel about the ending and I really don’t know what’s happening next!

My absolute favorite book of the year. Absolutely phenomenal heart breaking gut wrenching rollar coaster of a story. The characters have completely stolen my heart. The humor mixed with the seriousness of the situations is perfection. The spice and the chemistry are off the charts. My heart is pounding, and I am actually sweating from all the emotions I'm feeling, and that cliff is freaking brutal. I feel so stressed, I can't wait for the next book!

First of all, thank you to E.A. Fortneaux for gifting me an ARC of this book!

Where do I even begin?! This book was fantastic! Not often do I read a book that makes me feel every emotion the way this series does. From laughter, to sadness, to shock, anger, to ooey gooey heartwarming happiness, this book has it all.
As always, the banter is as great and I can’t get enough of the body positivity and inclusivity in this series.
I love Eira, Cato, and Ambrose so much and I even love to hate Septimus.
This story is so unique. The cast of characters are so diverse and amazing and I love watching the relationships grow. I truly have never read anything else like it. It’s never predictable and I love that.
The ending of When Snow Falls has me aghast! What a great cliffhanger! This book isn’t even out yet and I’m dying for the next book! What will I do in the meantime?!

How do I even go about gathering my thoughts about the 3rd book in this series?!
It was so steamy, and so much happened. I cried and laughed. I was confused at one point (politics does that for me sometimes), and pissed off (good books do that also). I thought I already knew these characters, but they are more multifaceted than I realized, and while I feel like they probably fucƙ more than they bathe, I love them like I know them personally.
My heart aches for them, I felt betrayed for them, and I feel joy for them.
So incredibly grateful for the ability to dive into this world ♡♡♡

Also, that ending?!!?!? I need more ♡

⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

EA has done it again! Book 3 in her Obligates series continues to put readers through the ringer, while simultaneously grabbing us and not letting go. I couldn’t put this book down. I laughed, I gasped, I cried, I blushed, and I loved reading this book. The continued saga has yet to disappoint and I can’t wait for more.

Picking up right where book 2 left off, the trauma that readers have gone through continued. Our beloved characters have gone through so much and their emotions can be felt. EA has a beautiful gift for balancing her epic storytelling with the perfect amount of humor to offset the serious tone, bringing readers relief when they need it. The same for balancing the spice. The spice is amazing in this book, but flows so well with the overall plot. It’s not just there to be there, but progresses naturally with the storyline.

In true EA fashion, we have things that workout and things that don’t. EA has never been shy about making her characters suffer, but you have to believe there is a purpose behind every decision made by our beloved author. Eira, Cato, and Ambrose continue to shine as they show readers time and time again that love truly can conquer all and transcends beyond a limited belief and definition.
Beyond breaking out of the normal definitions of love, EA has also included body positivity, female empowerment, and the fight for an overall better world. She breaks through social norms, giving minorities a voice through her stories and represents everyone. A voice for all people, her books do not disappoint and are a must read!

As always, review any author notes before reading.

Grab your tissues, cake (iykyk), and your favorite cuddle friend because you will need them after reading When Snow Falls, book 3 in the Obligates of Aerta series. E. A. Fortneaux is a freaking genius. She captivates you within the first 5 minutes of her books. You will not want to put this down, I can honestly say I counted down for weeks to read this book.
Honestly I laughed, cried, raged with Eira, strongly hated Septimus, cussed out loud multiple times, and am ready to offer myself to Cato!

Eira as always is a freaking badass we get to see her explore her powers and past a little deeper. Ambrose is still that needy clingy Crown Prince we all know and mostly love. Now that Cato is no longer the Protector and is back in line as an heir to the throne will things remain as they have been or will the new King have plans of his own? We will learn some truths that hit very close for our favorite Princes and the troth of Solna! It dies end on a cliffhanger but that just means we will get another book in this amazing series hopefully next year!

In conclusion, I hate Septimus, Ambrose is a whiny brat, Cato is a god, Aberus is a judgemental ass, and Eira is a total badass! I need to see more of Gotwig in the next book, I really enjoy when his character is "on screen." I think we deserve an excerpt with more of Ambrose and Cato and the harness, I am just gonna leave that there for E. A. Fortneaux! I don't want to give anything away so go read this book. It is a very well written series and absolutely deserves so much recognition and hype!!!

Just as in my other reviews on fantasy/romantasy books, I would like to preface this review by saying that fantasy/romantasy is not my typical genre of choice. My tastes tend to linger on the dark romance side of the spectrum. This is not because I do not enjoy fantasy, I very much do, but being neuro spicy, I tend to find the tremendous amount of world building and information to be overwhelming and often hard to grasp.

This is where E.A. Fortneaux reigns supreme.

The way that E.A. weaves fantasy romance,  politics, and humor in such a digestable way is nothing short of magical.

When Snow Falls is book three of the Obligates of Ærta series and fell seamlessly into the cracks of our heart that E.A. left us with as we dangled precariously from the cliff of the last book. In this book, unlike the previous two, we were introduced to the POV of our main male characters and boy oh boy was this a treat. We also delve deeper into the dynamic of the relationship and true feelings between Eira, Ambrose and Cat. We learn secrets, find some much needed answers and in true E.A. fashion, we were left nearly feral in need for the next book.

If your shopping list includes:
❄️ Fated Mates
❄️ LGBTQIA inclusivity
❄️ Found Family
❄️ Shadow Magic
❄️ MF,MMF,MM,MFM
❄️ Body Positivity
❄️ Curvaceous FMC
❄️ SPICE 🥵🥵🥵🥵
❄️ the wittiest banter in all the land

Look no further. Enter the world of Ærta.

I have loved this author since Following The Snow. I cannot herald this author enough to tell you that you will not find better world building, well thought out characters (honestly She must have laid out these characters flaws and strengths since the first book), and the pacing well of course its phenomenal. With each chapter I was letting out a true shuddering breath. The last book left us at the edge of the best cliffhanger I ever read. I was ready for this journey but of course it’s E.A. And she takes no prisoners. Ambrose and Cato are fierce men in love completely obsessed with Eira. Now I am smiling because where Ambrose is a blood thirsty warrior (get out of his way) he is a cinnamon roll. I am Team Cato. All he has lived for is his kingdom, his people. Eira was his first love. It is a love story for the ages. Next, This wicked woman, author, EA shows us Septimus. In Book 2 he did many despicable things, against Eira and her friends. Gorgeous is an understatement. Please check my posts, go on social media to see the art for this literal god of a man. He and Eira share a bond which she wants no part of. He is also related to Ambrose and Cato. I should hate Septimus but EA makes it very difficult to do so! Go and read The Obligates of Aerta, and see why I am obsessed with this author.

𝙃𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙙. “𝘼𝙣𝙮𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚.”

After the death of three beloved women within the castle of Monwyn, the clock is ticking to take down the Primus-King. His obsession to possess Eira looms over the heads of our favorite throuple as she learns to control the aether and her growing abilities. When she is separated from Cato and Ambrose, she travels to Solnna with Septimus (ew, but also yum) and unearths secrets that may turn the tides in the war to come.

“𝙄 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙞𝙩. 𝙄 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙭𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙘 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧.”

No one writes quite like Fort - this entire series is filled with dark and heavy themes that are balanced out with tons of levity and humor. I was on an unpredictable roller coaster unsure if the next valley would result in “pee my pants” funny moments or anxious as fuck “why would you do this to me?” moments. Eira is the most relatable FMC I’ve ever read and I love seeing someone that looks, thinks and acts like me on the page. Ambrose is a hoot and a half and I want to climb him like a tree. Cato is the love of my life and the short king of my heart.

“𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙤, 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙: 𝙈𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙨, 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙪𝙨, 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙜𝙤𝙙𝙨. 𝘾𝙝𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚.”

In When Snow Falls, EA Fortneaux returns to the original balance of plot, character development, world building, and spice that I loved in Following the Snow. (And the humor, of course!) I’ve come to love Eira more, have been pushed to a preference between her lovers, and have come to hate another character so much I’m ready for their end (sorry to those on his team, haha)!

For the first time, we get to see from Ambrose and Cato’s points of view, which ultimately led me to “pick a team”! I was originally concerned that the new viewpoints would be a distraction or cause confusion because that’s happened to me while reading other books. Instead, they had their own, clear, voices and those chapters helped bring so much clarity to situations and genuine insights into each of the men in Eira’s life.

I really enjoyed the continuity of this third book after there was a little jumping around during book two. It was a stable timeline and took us to a new region of Aerta that I thoroughly enjoyed learning about. Overall, I can’t decide which book is my fave - this one, or Following the Snow! Gah!

!!!TOP SERIES OF 2024!!! not even a single doubt about it. Wow! Just… WOW! (My brain is twitching… or something).

When Snow Falls - The 3rd installment in the “Obligates of Ærtra” series was an absolute MASTERPIECE.

This was a seriously mind altering experience. Such a roller coaster of emotions and the way the author dealt each blow, each twist and each turn, was skillfully executed.

These characters draw you in, in such a captivating manner. They become a part of your very being and coupled with a plot that leaves you feeling rather mind blown, you will never be the same again.

Ambrose - #becauseAmbrose - is my favorite. He’s so complex. So funny. So romantic. So intense. He is life.

Expect the best humor and banter, gut wrenching heartbreak, intense action, amazing chemistry and spice, twists that’ll leave you short of breath, breathtaking romance and absolutely incredible storytelling.

EA Fortneaux is an absolute genius and I cannot even fathom going a day without this story. I need book 4… desperately.

E.A. Fortneaux delivers another heart racing, hilarious, action packed, body positive, polyamorous, sexy, and spicy story filled with feminine rage! E.A.’s immersive romantasy storytelling is unmatched and this series is truly epic and unforgettable.

The king is dead! Eira is the Chosen Troth of Verus and she has been living happily in her contractural marriage in the kingdom of Monwyn with Prince Ambrose and Cato. That is until there was fire, death and destruction. Even at that, everything would be fine if it wasn’t for the fact that the next Monwyn in line for the throne was Aberus, if plurality wasn’t illegal in Monwyn, and if Eira wasn’t responsible for the death of the king! In the third and darkest installment thus far of the Obligates of Aerta series our favorite contractural Monwyns are on the run and secrets and unknown truths about Eira’s destiny as the chosen one are finally revealed. There is also a cute baby satyr in this book!

I am so overjoyed to be an ARC reader when I get to read books like this one! loved the next installment of Obligages of Aerta! I love the inclusivity and the world building! The cultures are so well thought out, especially since we travel to Solnann, as are the voices of our characters. I never wonder whose viewpoint I’m reading—it’s always so clear! Ambrose, Cato, and Eira’a voices are so recognizable, their personalities so distinct, and they seem like actual people with strengths and weaknesses. It’s refreshing! It’s also spicy, sad, happy, joyful, funny, heartbreaking, romantic, and every other descriptor I can name. Read not only this book, but the whole series. You won’t be disappointed. I want book four to come out now now now! 🙂

What can I say about E. A. Fortneaux's latest book "When Snow Falls"? It is a magical ride of emotions, a deep plot, and eroticism all woven together with an intricately imagined world that brings its reader along for the ride. E. A. Fortneaux takes you on a journey that can clearly be imagined in your mind's eye. She will cause you to laugh, cry, and rage throughout all of the situations that the characters endure. She also creates some of the sexiest scenes that I have ever read! I love her ability to describe the characters clothes, foods, and abodes in such rich detail! Her ability to weave her words into such a rich tapestry is a true work of art! Thank you for creating such a lush series for us all to enjoy!

I’m starting to feel like these authors are trying to bleed us dry because these emotions that this book brought out of me should be illegal.

I love this series so much because it is unlike anything that I have ever read.
It’s high fantasy which isn’t something I always read but a few series like this one has made me love it. I love the world building in this series because each book there is always something new to learn about the world.

While it has it moments that make me kick my feet and laugh or has me swooning like a little girl with a crush there are moments when I just cry. The ending of this book had me going through so much I didn’t know what to do with my feelings. I honestly can’t wait to see what happens in the next book because I know it’s going to blow my mind.

There is so much action and intrigue in this book. How do you fall in love with someone and not be able to admit it and then wanting to give the one you love everything of their dreams and wishes. Doing everything in your power to help those you love, while learning to wield powers that have killed one you love the most. Being part of a larger picture that started being put into motion before you were born. This book brings you to a huge crescendo, and I am counting the days until the next one comes out. Please give us every point of view in as many characters as you can because I want to see all of this!!!

A dark and delicious continuation of the series. Eira continues her reign of chaos. We learn more about Ambrose’s past and the expansion of conjurer lore is fascinating. I love-hate Septimus, who plays a much larger role in this book; I just can’t resist a traumatized, mostly-evil man. We get a bit more of other cultures and environments in this book, which naturally comes with more of Fortneaux’s stellar setting descriptions. I have no idea where this story is going and I am absolutely along for the ride.

To say that I have been obsessed with this series and new book is an understatement. This story took so many twists and turns. At the end of the last book I was in the throws of grief and emotions, this book said “hold my beer.” I don’t know how to continue this without spoilers, so I’ll say this: the intensity level of this series has risen with each book and while I don’t know how this journey will end, I’m filled with anticipation.

This was an incredible addition to the series so far and just like the books that came before it, I am already dying to read the next!

I was so enraptured with this book from beginning to end. I loved going on another trek with Eira as she continues to learn more about herself and the importance of the people around her.

Great themes of body positivity, love is love, and woman empowerment.

Thank you to EA for the ARC, it's always a pleasure.

As someone who already had a deep love for the main characters in this book, to say I was excited for this third installment was an understatement. When Snow Falls is my favorite of the 3 so far. We are introduced to so much more of the expansive continent of Ærta, with rich, descriptive writing. I hold such a strong place in my heart for the three main characters, Eira, Ambrose and Cato. Their character development is so well written that I look at them as friends. Friends who happen to be in an I choose type romantic situation. The spice in this book is so well balanced with the epic details of the major conflict. This book expands on the unique magic system we are introduced to in Snow on the Summit.

When Snow Falls has everything I could ask for in a romantasy. A plus size, relatable, strong, female main character, queer representation, tons and tons of spice, epic world building, beautifully descriptive writing, lovable male main characters and so much more!
