Bancroft took the time to really define Gloria and Cam as individuals before putting them on the same path. They are so different and yet perfect for each other, showing the battles women faced at this time. They are two incredibly strong women in their own way. Gloria is fighting a domineering father, while Cam stays true to herself in a too-conventional world. Cam's character was my favorite; she is so strong, protective, and fragile at the same time. Portraying a neurodivergent character without explicitly stating it was perfectly done. There were infuriating characters that brought the perfect dose of angst and antagonism. Characters from previous books make an appearance, and seeing a glimpse of Bea's life made me so happy. I love her, and seeing her being the only one appearing in the three books, Bancroft must do too. With a balanced book, *Encrypted Hearts* is the perfect ending to an excellent series.

Absolutely Brilliant!

Gloria gets the opportunity to help out with the war efforts as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park. As soon as she arrives she is taken by Cam, another codebreaker and together they become quite the team. As they start spending time together, Cam’s attraction to Gloria is returned in Gloria’s own feelings but they are both wary of their secret getting out and ruining what they have.

Such an exciting story, from the romance between Cam and Gloria having to be secret, to the important work they were doing to contribute to winning the war. There was all the scandal and typical stereotyping of the period for the story that made it realistic, and at times very emotional, but also a beautiful story with a strong message about love really being able to conquer most things. Obviously the war was a dangerous time to just exist but for Cam it was a daily matter of life and death not because of the war but because of societal norms. I admired how she was true to herself, but always careful not to be caught in compromising situations that could have led to disastrous consequences for both her and Gloria.

The best bit was how freeing this was for Gloria. Escaping a life with her father setting out a path for her, and finding her own way and place in the world. She was determined, strong, kind, and caring. Despite her own worries for her safety, as soon as she realised what she was feeling for Cam she was true to herself and loyal, even if meant she had to take some steps that were uncomfortable in order to save their relationship and careers. I admired both Cam and Gloria for their smarts, but also how they cared for one another and had an intimacy that could fool anyone into thinking they really were just friends, but it was so good they had their secrets.

Loved every second of this and highly recommend the story.

The story revolves around two code breakers from very different backgrounds brought together by the war. We follow their story trying to navigate feelings, societal expectations, duty to country while trying to be true to themselves.

This was a one day read for me because it was one of those stories where I HAD to know what happened next! The main characters were solid. They were both written with distinct personalities and quirks that it was easy to root for them individually (especially Cam). Shout out to the neurodivergent rep. It made the character more endearing to me.

Although the war was sort of a background noise while the story played on, the characters’ journey were no less thrilling. EV Bancroft is so skilled when it comes to writing women during war time. There were even cameos of other characters from the author’s previous books. It was such a delight!

Set at Bletchley Park during WWII. Great story, and skillfully written. The writing seamlessly transports you to the time and place. I am not ready to leave the world of this story, so I'm planning a reread of Warm Pearls and Paper Cranes which features one of the secondary characters in Encrypted Hearts.

I love a good historical sapphic fiction and EV Bancroft’s Encrypted Hearts didn’t disappoint! Set in England during WW2 when food, clothing and water rationing was in full swing, an era when communism and homosexuality were seen as crimes and sexism and classism are endemic – where the ‘good old boys club’ has power with blinkers on! The slow burn romance that occurs between the 2 main protagonists – Cam (butch) & Gloria (fem) has you riding along beside them as they encounter all the bumps and turns of self-discovery and ‘forbidden’ love in a time of uncertainty. The main antagonist/traitor of their story, I was able to figure out before they were completely revealed but the final take down was awesome – let’s just say they got what they deserved. The tongue in cheek humour was enough, to at times lighten the mood of the story especially when dealing with the harsh realities of war, without detracting from the humanity of the characters. This book was an easy read that kept me engaged and cheering for Cam & Gloria to succeed in both love and life (code breakers at Bletchley Park). This book is part of Bancroft’s Women in War series, but you can definitely read it as a stand-alone, as the characters only play very brief roles in each other stories.

E. V. Bancroft you're a wizard! I usually really struggle with most forms of historical fiction. Unless you add some form of fantasy into it. But this book, this book nailed it for me. There is something about Bancroft's writing style that just really appeals to me. It has a beautiful flow to it and at times was almost lyrical.
The 2 main characters where really well crafted with depth, complexity, flaws and flavour. I love it when I find I can relate to characters in some way. Both Cam and Gloria had aspects of that for me so cue the happy dancing.
This story is a beautiful slow burn romance that had my sappy heart sighing like a goof ball but its also so much more than that. It had me feeling sooooo many things throughout, from beginning to end. From swooning and happy sighing LOL to full on teeth and fist clenching! I kid you not!! I was totally enthralled.
For me this was everything I've been looking for in an historical fiction book and I'm so grateful I got the chance to read it.

Another superb book from Bancroft! It has everything you need as a reader to keep you entranced and eating up the pages as if you were at a feast. Like many other non-historical readers I’ve really, really enjoyed this book.

Firstly, the setting is both interesting and shows the research that Bancroft has done. Bletchley Park is beautifully described with an almost lyrically description in places, I defy you to believe you haven’t ever been there. And if you haven’t and you get the chance you should go. The descriptions of Gloria’s home and Cam’s current accommodation deserve special mention too.

The main characters, Gloria and Cam are layered and interesting. Their romance amid the trials of war and society’s hatred of deviants is full of suspense and keeps you rooting for them right up until the end.

There are a number of side characters that are delightful, and I especially enjoyed another visit with Bea from Warm Pearls and Paper Cranes and Beryl and Odette from Virgin Flight. It has been a delightful series of books, that you can read in any order. Maybe we’ll get to see more of them in the future!

Sweet and intense romance with intriguing mystery element (4.5 stars)
This is my first time reading EV Bancroft. I was unaware of the other books in this series beforehand (this is book 3 in the A Women in War Historical Romance series); those who have read books 1 and 2 will recognize names from them in Encrypted Hearts where those characters get a mention or make an appearance. This book works well as a standalone read but I'm now curious to read the other books to see how they fit together.
Despite being set in wartime UK, there is plenty of humor to offset the drama and intrigue. Main characters Cam and Gloria are doing high stakes work in an environment where sexism homophobia classism and other forms of discrimination and prejudice are on full display with 'the old boys club' also in operation. Some of the language will reflect that in the writing, however it's accurate to the time period so if it causes offense, use it as a reminder of the progress that has been made in many countries over the ensuing decades. Having two intelligent women using their brains for good makes them appealing and easy to root for as do Cam's adorable quirks and Gloria's assertiveness; at a time in history when many men would rather a woman look nice, always be submissive and make tea than best them in the workplace these two women are incredibly brave in numerous ways. Their romance is sweet and its trajectory perhaps unconventional by modern day standards but in wartime where there were no guarantees about the future and untold barriers were in place for women, Cam and Gloria find a way to express and explore their attraction to each other. I appreciated the musical element of the story along with the details that paint the picture of codebreaking and day to day life in wartime; rations and the scarcity of food items we take for granted now, minimal to no lighting outside at night, and bicycle clips are a few examples woven into the story in a matter of fact way.
I found the book easy to read with each character easy to imagine, their voices distinct in the story. I strongly suspected the baddie before they were revealed but their takedown is epic and likely to please readers regardless. Some language is florid in places but fits with the time period and scenes in the story. The romance is sweet when not fraught with angst and uncertainty that is often high stakes. I had questions while reading the story and nearly all were answered in the course of the story; those unanswered were very minor in terms of the overall plot.
Those not familiar with Bletchley Park prior to reading this book will get a good sense of its importance in WW2 which has only been made public in recent years. I knew a fair amount going in to the story, but still learned some new details. History is not my jam but a story set in the past that's well told can pull me in and bring history to life in an appealing engaging and entertaining way. I now want to read the rest of the books in this series along with the other books the author has published so far. If the author publishes a follow-up story to check in with Cam, Gloria and the rest of the characters in the future I'll happily read that as well.

I'm always pleasantly caught off guard by E.V Bancroft's Women in War history stories; tales of history are not something I ever thought I'd find myself enjoying.

Yet here I am.

Bancroft's latest venture, Encrypted Hearts, takes readers to Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire - the home of allied code breaking during the Second World War. From there we get to meet Cam Langley and Gloria Edwards, both as different as they come. Cam is highly intelligent yet reserved, and her work is her life. She doesn't shy away from who she is, openly dressing in masculine attire despite the judgements and unwanted attention it garners.
Gloria on the other hand, is a Yorkshire girl through and through. With a broad northern accent and a small-minded father, Gloria is willing to tread any path which takes her away from home and closer to a "proper" contribution to the war effort.

I like that Cam and Gloria are very different characters - they bring out aspects of each other that otherwise would remain hidden. Yet their differences also complement each other, particularly Gloria's ability to draw Cam out of her shell somewhat, without ever forcing her nor belittling who Cam is.
Watching Cam and Gloria navigate their fledgling feelings, and rising passions, at a time when mistrust of anything other, or out of the ordinary, would have held intense repercussions is anything but boring.
Bancroft does a terrific job at injecting life into both the risks Cam and Gloria faced in their personal endeavours, and the pressures of the code breaking job they were there to do. The ever-present threat of failure, of missing a key coded message, was a guillotine ready to drop at all times.

I loved getting to learn about an aspect of my nation's history that didn't become widely known until the 1970's, it added a little kick of closeness to the tale.

I felt like I got to know Gloria's background and her story in detail, and whilst I adored Cam's Aunty Florrie and the adorable relationship they shared, I didn't come away feeling like I knew Cam on the same level. I found myself wanting to know so much more about her and how she viewed the world (she reads as neurodivergent but this is not explicit), as she's such an engrossing character on the page.

I adored the epilogue, such a special way to tie the story together and in the perfect setting for the time period. I equally loved that Bancroft weaves some of her past characters into Encrypted Hearts as it's always fun to catch up with old friends again!

I urge any reader who wouldn't usually contemplate picking up Sapphic historical fiction, to re-consider. Grab one of Bancroft's Women in War stories and you might just surprise yourself.

I am never disappointed by E.V. Bancroft and her exceptional historical storytelling and this book is why.

Bletchley Park is an infamous part of 1940's British history and yet there is still much we do not know about who worked there and what they did. The author has clearly spent hour upon hour researching and building out her understanding of this institution and its secrets - and we, as the readers, are the beneficiaries of all of that hard work. We are treated to exceptional world building and scene setting here, along with Bancroft's typically robust and skilful character writing. The way this book is written is a joy to receive and, despite the darkness of the content given the time and events occurring, there is something quite wonderful about the ease of reading this story.

Cam and Gloria, our two leads, wind themselves into an intricate dance of pushing and pulling as their relationship progresses. Both characters have beautiful layers of complexity written into the story and are charming in their own right but the way their complexities and stories are woven together makes it difficult to put this book down... and had me immediately wondering when there will be more from the author on these two!

The 1940's WWII setting, the mysterious world of Bletchley Park, and the cast of supporting characters and underlying plot threads gives this book depth and colour that makes it an irresistible read... and a definite re-read for me in future. A worthy addition to Bancroft's suite of historical fiction and I can only hope there is more to come!

This was the third book in A Woman in War Historical Romance Series.
Cam Langley was a female who always dressed as a man and was bizarre in the way the character Stephen was in Radcliffe Hall’s book, The Well of Loneliness. She was a brilliant code breaker at Bletchley Park. She didn’t mingle or mix easily with others and became attracted to fellow co-worker Gloria Edwards because of how easy it was to talk to someone who was open and friendly to everyone, especially her.

Gloria was determined to remain independent and not cower to her demanding father who wanted her to marry a man who would take over his business and have the bloodline continue.

Cam and Gloria grew closer as they spent more time together doing such things as walking, biking and playing chess. They kept their relationship secret because of the homophobic attitude of the times. There was also the obnoxious head of their group, Jamie, who pestered Gloria to go out with him. Jamie also played a part in a bit of mystery and drama in the story.

The author was very skilled at presenting the climate of the era with her portrayal of things such as rationing. As an example, when the characters discussed driving somewhere, the petrol ration amount was usually mentioned!

The romance was slow burn, and I can’t explain my reasons, but I had difficulty getting into the romance. As much as I love the narrator, Juanita McMahon, she convinced me of the passion.

A gripping wartime romance

In this captivating historical romance, EV Bancroft shows us the hidden world of Bletchley Park, where Britain’s brightest minds worked tirelessly to crack codes and shift the course of World War II. Bancroft weaves a tale of love, suspense, and patriotism through the lives of two unforgettable characters: Gloria and Cam.

I’ve always been fascinated by the covert operations and high-stakes secrecy of wartime intelligence and EV Bancroft brings it to life. She draws readers into a world where anyone could be a spy, and the pressure to succeed is as intense as it is isolating.

Against this dramatic backdrop, Gloria and Cam’s endearing and believable connection grows, showing how love can flourish even in the most uncertain times.

Bancroft’s meticulous research and eye for historical detail shine, but it’s her storytelling that captivates. She balances romance with suspense, layering Gloria and Cam’s love story with the thrilling, constant tension of wartime codebreaking. By the end, you’ll find yourself hoping for their future as much as they do.

EV Bancroft has outdone herself with this blend of romance and history. Fans of historical fiction and anyone who enjoys a real page-turner will love this book. I can’t wait to see where EV takes us next.

I adore E.V. Bancroft’s Women in War historical romances. Bancroft’s writing pulls you in, mixing raw emotions, vivid scenes, and love. Her well-developed characters take on a life of their own as you cry with them and cheer for them.

In Encrypted Hearts, Bancroft takes us into the secret world of code-breaking at Bletchley Park to get a feel for the pressure of having society value your skills but hate whom you love. Historically, the government persecuted Alan Turing for homosexuality, but I didn’t know that it was legal for women to be together in 1930s England. Although, society still wanted women’s love hidden behind closed doors. So, I was surprised that the character Cam dressed like a man. Still, brilliant Cam remained true to herself but wished for a love. The outgoing character Gloria from Yorkshire turned Cam’s and other gentlemen’s heads pretty quickly when she arrived at Bletchley. But Gloria was keen on Cam, and as their relationship grows from friendship to lovers, so will your heart. And I don’t want to forget Cam’s dear Aunt Florrie. She’s a family member that we all ache to have.

“And somehow, it was like when a code revealed its secrets. It was impossible not to see the truth as the jumbled words gained meaning. They had unlocked the most beautiful message. They loved each other.” ~ E.V. Bancroft. Encrypted Hearts

E. V. Bancroft has once again written a fantastic historical romance!
Her character of Cam and Gloria, depicted as strong women, but different in their personalities. Gloria is outgoing and makes her opinion known, Cam is quiet and keeps her head down because she is so “different.”

Both women are brilliant and yet their contributions to the Code Breaking they were doing for the war effort was not appreciated nor acknowledged because of the “good old boys club” attitude. The prejudice, homophobia, and discrimination from some of the men is evident throughout this story and I’m sure is a depiction of how it was during the war for the women.

E.V. Bancroft certainly did quite a bit of research when authoring this book as topics covered regarding rationing, minimal lighting, or none at night outside, and the scarcity of food that we take for granted today, added an element of realism faced back then.

The book will keep you interested, and you think you know what is going to happen next, but it’s not what you think!

I love this WW2 Bletchley Park story.
Yorkshire lass Gloria gets recruited and sent to Bletchley Park - a far more satisfying war time role for her than working in the office of her dad's factory.
She meets Cam, a whizz at cracking codes there. Cam is unlike anyone else she has ever met - she dresses in men's suits, has short hair and keeps herself to herself.
They connect over singing and Gloria is 'strangely ' attracted to Cam.
There is also intrigue and suspense with a spy story for Gloria to contend with - as well as having to deal with her dad's constant attempts to thwart her and get her home to marry a boring man.
There is so much research in this story - it is so interesting to read. Especially when characters from the other 2 books in the series make an appearance at the end.
This is the 3rd book in this series - you could read them all as standalones, but it is much better to read them all.

Epilogue
This sees them out celebrating VE day in London in 1945 - with characters from past books there as well.

Slighted woman enlists for important war work to escape a dysfunctional home. Spends evenings singing and trading sparks with her attractive colleague.

Encrypted Hearts is a historical sapphic fiction set in Bletchley Park during WWII. The author does a great job weaving a slow burn romance during a treacherous time; aiding war efforts while having to protect your true self from hushed prejudice makes fertile grounds for a forbidden romance.

I enjoyed the buildup to the protagonists' meeting. It gave us time to get to know their backstory, provides a good reason to meet, and builds up anticipation.

The flamboyant prose fits the era. (I never had to pause to look up words while reading a romance novel before this 😅) It isn’t perfect; the use of Bea as a mentor figure for Cam felt a little forced and the resolution felt a little too convenient. Though it does encourage us to think about our own prejudices.

If you like a slow-burn, forbidden historical romance set in a real setting, pick up Encrypted Hearts!

E.V. Bancroft once again crafts a fantastic story. If historical fiction isn’t your thing, I get it as it isn’t my usual either. Cam is brilliantly gifted but is on the outside due to being different. Gloria, equally brilliant, also fights against the expectations of who women are supposed to be from her family to her coworkers. The characters are well crafted and developed and the story is fantastic. Bancroft takes a genre that doesn’t usually keep my interest and enraptures me in a story between these two women who not only strive to help their country through the raging war but fight their demons, overcome their obstacles, and seek a better life together. Walking through this time with these women, while fiction, gives, what I believe, is a realistic representation of what life was, of what their fight was, of what their community was, and how strong the women of this time were to carry family, friends, and country through some of the darkest days of our history.

In WWII England, Cam is a brilliant butch assigned to work at Bletchley Park decoding enemy messages. Gloria is from the north and is looking to escape her controlling father and dull life. She competes for a place at Bletchley and after being mistakenly assigned to a boring job, she joins Cam and her other coworkers as a decoder.

Cam is written as someone on the spectrum, unnerved by noise and large crowds and highly introverted. Gloria is beautiful and very feisty. She finds herself surprisingly attracted to Cam but pursued by Jamie, a wealthy male coworker who is very persistent.

The plot involves the growing attraction between Cam and Gloria and the pursuit of a spy by an abusive MP.

I'm going with 5 stars based on the excellent research and the creation of two well drawn MCs. There's a bit of a middle sag, but not too much to detract and some repetitive dialogue, but on the whole a really good read and highly recommended.

"Encrypted Hearts" by EV Bancroft is an impeccably written, perfectly paced, historical romance transporting you to Bletchley Park during the Second World War.

It tells the story of Cam Langley and Gloria Edwards, two talented code breakers, with contrasting backgrounds, working on the same team. With a Cambridge University background, Cam possesses a distinct blend of social awkwardness and quirkiness. Unapologetically comfortable in her own skin, she confidently rocks men’s clothes. Gloria is from Yorkshire and works in her father’s factory. She longs to escape from her current life, hoping there is something more out there for her.

As the story progresses, the writing style and detail takes you back in time, giving a sense of nostalgia for a time gone by. In a growing list of historical romances, I am both intrigued and look forward to the next book by EV Bancroft.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

Gloria and Cam a story of searching for each other, the chemistry from the first meeting was undeniable, a pull so strong between two women, the struggles they each had to face with their feelings for one another and with society gives depth and understanding to the time and era of the setting, a very emotional read in all aspects, E.V Bancroft has yet again created another wartime masterpiece and the only disappointment was the story coming to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed having Bea Williams in this story a character of strength and determination and belief, and Aunty Florrie is just sensational. This is must read along with the previous two books and my mind was blown when Beryl and Odette have a small cameo in this book. What can I say it truly is remarkable and the story decrypted my heart.

The author’s clearly enjoying writing about the wartime years as this is another set in the mid-1940’s in Britain. This time the setting is Bletchley Park and the secret decoding work that went on there. Her two MC’s, Yorkshire lass Gloria and ultra-butch Cam are suitably diverse. I liked Cam’s bravery in dressing and being exactly who she wanted to be, irrespective of society’s expectations. Cam is immediately drawn to Gloria but imagines Gloria is more interested in their cabin-mate, Jamie. However, Gloria finds herself developing unexpected feelings and she doesn’t spend a lot of time agonising over them (which I appreciated). There’s some drama and tension over espionage and the fear of discovery too. It kept my interest and there’s even a brief catch up with both of the couples from the author’s previous two ‘Women in War’ books. A decent read.

I am always a sucker for historical romance books and if played out during the 2nd world war I am all in. I have read Warm Pearls and Paper Cranes with Bea and Maud and absolutely loved that book. To see more of Bea is in this book was such a delight.

This book was also a great read. We have Gloria, our small town really smart woman doing a test that makes it possible to join a secret coed breaker team after a lot of hassle with her father blocking her. At her new job she meets the androgynous Cam that is wearing man clothes and is the smartest code breaker there. When they start singing together Gloria realizes she may be into a woman and Cam is a goner at the very start but thinks she has no chance with a woman ever.

A lot of back and forth between the two and also a lot of drama at the job. I can really recommend this book.

I recently became a big fan of historical romance and let me tell you, E.V. Bancroft knows how to write a great novel. The characters are so full of life, they pop off the page. You can almost see them sitting in the office as they crack the codes...the sounds, the smells, the tension between the characters. But most importantly you can feel the intensity as Cam and Gloria crack the codes between themselves and begin the path towards romance. Cam and Gloria will capture your hearts with their strength and their weaknesses, their brilliance and their dedication. They are determined and they are bold. It is a book that will touch many of your emotions. If you have never read historical fiction, give this one a try. I think you might become a fan.

E.V. Bancroft has written a very good story with an interesting subject in the background. I live in Dayton, Ohio where the Enigma code breaking machines were built. I have always had an interest in this part of history. So, I found this book to be is good telling of code breaking history.
E.V. has penned a story with interesting characters, a well written storyline that held my interest until the end and a good romance thrown in. Cam and Gloria are easy to fall in love with and I hope to maybe read a sequel to their story someday!

EV Bancroft tells a compelling hostorical wartime story. It has wonderful chemistry from the first meeting.
I am not usually a fan of historical romances, but this one has pulled at my heartstrings and made me want to read the other two in the series.
I enjoyed the fact that there wasn't much angst. What was there was mainly caused by secondary characters. It was resolved well and timely.
The story had light heat. Wonderfully crafted secondary characters.
I look forward to more books by this author and will be going back to read the others in the series.

Four stars rounded up from 3.5.

This was a can't-put-down read for me. The plot kept me hooked and I liked both Cam and Gloria a lot. (And oh, I'm weak for a dashing, slender butch like Cam.)

I had some trouble with and also some anachronistic language--"psychedelic" was the worst offender. (Picky of me, I know, but this is my rating, and something that consistently bugs me is going to lose a book at least half a point.)

This book is about codebreakers at Bletchley Park in England during WWII. I felt this book did a fantastic job of setting the place and time. The historical details were terrific. It was interesting to get a glimpse into how the codes were broken. Encrypted Hearts has intrigue and suspense, but first and foremost, this book is a delightful romance. I loved the background detail on our two main characters. We really get to know and root for them. I listened to the audiobook. It's narrated by Juanita McMahon. She did a wonderful job.

The author did an amazing job of drawing me in to war time England. The details about the blacked out windows and telephone booth to the rations and secrecy about their work laid the foundation for an intimate story of two very different women. Cam and Gloria are wonderfully unique and their relationship grows as the best do with time and conversation. I enjoyed the audiobook and the different English accents that added a layer to each character. This is another wonderful book by EV Bancroft and I suggest you pick it up, you won’t be disappointed!

There is a nice balance between the historical setting, the romance, and the intrigue/drama tied with the work at Bletchley Park. The development of Cam's and Gloria's characters, feisty Aunt Flossie and 'Three' were the highlights for me.

There is a bit of spoiler in the Epilogue for Book 2 of the series (Virgin Flight). Nothing major, but for folks picking up the series, you may want to read the books in order. I have to read Book 2 now. 😂
