I'll Paint You a Sunset Someday

Rate this book
There’s nothing worse than being alone, in Hallee’s humble opinion. Extremely ironic, considering The Gift of Forgetting forces a fresh start every New Year’s Day, rendering it nearly impossible to get attached to anyone. Surely the promised “wild and free” life wasn’t supposed to include Hallee’s obsessive hyperfixation on questioning her purpose—right? After all…what purpose would that serve?

Unfortunately, drowning herself in copious amounts of vanilla lattes doesn’t medicate her growing anxiety. (What a surprise!) So when Dean, a true gentleman with galaxy eyes and a kind heart, offers an escape from her ever-present intrusive thoughts, getting attached doesn’t seem like such a challenge.

Hallee and Dean are better together. They’re a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise, the first flower after a long winter, and a desperate wish on a shooting star. But as New Year’s Day quickly approaches, they’re forced to face the ultimate question…are people permanently marked by the experiences of their lives? Can the great love of Hallee and Dean prove that hearts remember—even if minds do not?

In the end, love conquers all…doesn’t it?

This book was just not for me. I feel terrible about this rating so please take it like a grain of salt.

It’s not that I think the book is bad, I don’t. I think that it should be said that this is a dystopian book of sorts- it’s not just a straight up contemporary romance.

I’ll review this fully later, but this was over the top sugary sweet. A lot of telling not much showing. Insta everything. (Not an exaggeration)

Now, there is a reason for this, but the struggle I felt with each page and the amount of eye rolls. I just wanted to get to the point and past all the insta obsession that was going on.

But getting there… ugh.

I skimmed a lot. I found myself not wanting to pick the book up.

I think there’s plenty of people that will enjoy this one, I’m just not into overly sugar sweet syrupy insta love. It took too long to get to what was going on and the reader is left in the dark just reading this idk dystopian world where everyone is nice and cheery idk over the top. It didn’t feel organic or real.

Maybe it wasn’t supposed to. I felt like I was in some type of Stephen King dystopian universe where everyone was perfect bc they were designed to be.

Lmao. I’m really tripping. Full review later lol. Lemme think on it.

— ⊹ "for anyone who feels deeply and anyone still learning to let the light in — hold the line. you are not alone." ⁺˖ ⸝⸝

⊹ ₊ »- thoughts ⟢
to begin, thank you heather for buddy reading this with me and sharing your thoughts! this was such a sweet and heartwarming read and i think it was the perfect start to my february. this book is so full of love in all its different forms and i can feel how much thought was put into it through the writing. the feeling i got while reading this book felt just like the cover. it was full of hope and much like a sunset, it is a reminder that there is light within darkness. as the sun goes down and the sky is overcome with the night, light still lingers. whether it's from the remaining rays of sunlight peeking over the horizon just before the sun fully sets, the soft glow of the moon, or the stars that form constellations above, there is light all around - you just have to search for it. no matter what that light is, hold onto it and keep moving forward. let it guide you until dawn arrives and light shines upon you once more. that was the message i got from this book and i thought it was really beautiful.

while i adored the writing and its themes, there was a lack of development in one of the main plot points that lost me. i was surprised to see that this book was kind of dystopian, despite not being described as such, but i would've liked to see more development in that aspect. i think there could've been a few more pages or chapters to build upon "the gift," given it was the main point of the whole story. on top of that, i wish there was more to the relationships and the character's lives. in this world, there is the "gift of forgetting" where everyone's memories are completely wiped every new year. they basically start their lives over, but everything falls back into routine so quickly, it had me wondering what the point was in mentioning that they forget if they just go back to normal, immediately have best friends, and fall in love so fast. i understand one of the main themes being "the heart remembers even when the mind does not," but it was just underwhelming. in theory, it makes sense to have these connections pre-determined since these characters have met before, but the way it was delivered was not for me. on the bright side, i did think the relationships were really sweet and i loved how there was equal focus on both platonic and romantic relationships. i think the best way to describe how i feel about this story is that i loved everything and everyone on the surface, but i wish there was more depth behind the connections and world.

— ⊹ "there’s no reason to try to be everything to everyone. those who need you will find you, and you will feel their love." ⁺˖ ⸝⸝

⊹ ₊ »- characters ⟢
everyone in this book was really cute and sweet. i loved how involved the side characters were as well as the focus on their friendships. the friend group was definitely giving found family and like i said, i just wish there was more to it than automatically becoming best friends. now for our main characters, halle and dean, i really did love them. the love story was very, very sweet (maybe a little too sweet for me), but they were the textbook definition of perfect for each other. i did get annoyed with the constant use of my girl and my man and idk maybe i'm just a hater, but give me a break. 😭 while i was a bit bored at times with their picture perfect love at first sight relationship, they did have their cute moments.

⊹ ⁺ ꒰ hallee 🌤 ꒱ ˎˊ˗ i thought hallee was such a relatable and deep character. while she appears positive on the outside and is often described as sunshine, she is incredibly introspective with mental struggles of her own. as her anxiety grows, she often questions her purpose in life. she battles with her desire for connection and her fear of ending up alone as everyone else around her is taken away by "the gift." eventually, she is able to heal and find happiness thanks to the love she felt from the people around her. one thing i loved about hallee was how she still had a deep appreciation for the little things in life even when she was struggling. if it was something as small as smiling at a stranger, or seeing the flowers bloom in the spring or the snow falling in the winter, hallee noticed the impact of these small "love notes from the universe" as she calls them and points out how dull life would be if she didn't pay attention to them. i loved how seen i felt reading about hallee and i hope anyone who reads this book can see themselves too. she is for the people who feel deeply, who overthink, and let their anxiety consume them, but still have so many hopes and dreams, who love love in all its forms, and desire deep connections.

— ⊹ "my heart thrives on the days when i feel so carefree i could almost float away, but i wouldn’t know the value of those days without the ones where anxiety paralyzes me. the days where i feel trapped in a shrinking box of my own thoughts matter just as much as tonight does, because without the darkness i would never appreciate the light." ⁺˖ ⸝⸝

⊹ ⁺ ꒰ dean 🌻 ꒱ ˎˊ˗ dean was the sweetest guy ever. his attentiveness to hallee's feelings and his willingness to help her through anything was so heartwarming and i loved how much they communicated. although miscommunication is realistic, it still gets on my nerves, so it was refreshing to see a couple in books who talk to each other and work through their problems together instead of shutting each other out. his acts of service for hallee was so cute and overall, he was amazing for her. he often called her sunshine, describing how her light reflects on him and makes him a better person, but they were each other's sunshine. they lit up the darkest parts of one another and shined together. his quotes about her were so adorable and one day, i hope to find a love as pure and deep as theirs.

— ⊹ "you are radiant, every piece of you. they may take my mind, but my heart will remember and follow your scattered pieces of sun. time and time again, my soul will carry me home." ⁺˖ ⸝⸝

⊹ ₊ »- final thoughts ⟢
overall, i really enjoyed this book and i definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a cute, yet emotional book. it was so lovely and i did indeed tear up in the end. 😭 anyways, this was a perfect start to february and i can't wait to read even more romance books this month. 🫶

This book is going to live rent free in my head for a while. It’s one of those that imprints your soul. From start to finish this was so well thought out. At first I wasn’t sure about the insta love, but like how could I judge when I instantly fell in love with Dean? Obviously character development is huge for me and these characters were everything. They had me feeling ALL the feels. I laughed at their banter and also cried alongside them. The perfect mix. This novel is just so beautiful and so raw.

This book. Wow, this book broke me. I’m at a loss for words at how beautiful this story is. There’s so much heart and love intertwined within this story, yet also so much heartache. This book tugged at my heart in the most beautifully painful ways.

How does one deal with forgetting those you love, erased under the guise of a “gift.” How do you learn to love when you don’t even know who you are?

I felt so many things when reading this book. I laughed, and I cried. But ultimately I felt such an overwhelming sense of love when I read about these characters. Each character learned to open up and show love freely, even with the looming sense of loss over their heads. They learned to be so wonderfully themselves. Watching Hallee grow to care for all the parts of herself brought me to tears. Her character is one that I hold very close to my heart. She’s soft, yet so very strong and deserving.

This story was truly so special. I loved Halle and Dean’s love and the care they had for one another. I also loved how strongly their friends loved each other. I highlighted so many parts of this book so I can revisit them frequently.

I’ll Paint You a Sunset Someday was a deeply personal story. I feel so honored to have read it. Thank you so much to Bex for creating this beautiful story.

♾️ stars, like the whole entire galaxy times a trillion.

The GIFT of reading this book is recognizing the whispers of Bex on each page, in the events that unfold, in the thoughts the characters have. I am sitting in the room with Bex as she writes, hearing her read her own words out loud, I can feel her in every word. It’s astonishing and an experience that I wish every human alive could have. To know Bex, and read this book is remarkable. The weight of its importance is heavy in the best way.. like the weighted blankets that soothe us. I do not think I will ever recover from this book, it has changed me.

This book is a MASTERPIECE. It is timely, it is brilliant, it is mind bending and heartbreaking. This book will without question change your life, and mold your heart in ways you can not expect. This is the new generations Hunger games, Divergent, Enders Game, but so much more cerebral, brilliant, loving and soft. I cannot wait for this beautiful book to change lives all over the world, READ IT NOW!!!!!

The way this book has ingrained itself right into my heart you guys.

I had the privilege of beta reading this book last year. And honestly, it barely had notes. Literally. The story is something I’ve never come across before. Somehow Bex has weaved a sci fi (ish) plot into romance and it made it feel like the coziest coffee shop vibes while also wrenching your soul out. Her writing style is so beautiful. I honestly can’t even describe it.

When I also say I sobbed my eyes out I mean it. Sobbed. So. Hard. These characters and this story just…are indescribable. It’s something you have to experience for yourself.

Thank you Bex for allowing me to be apart of this journey with you 🫶🏻

Beautiful • Romantic • Emotional • Poetic • Unique
“I could never say no to those eyes. They feel like home, but home’s just a figment of imagination when you don’t have the time to build one.”

I love a book that can just pull at my heartstrings and make me feel something. I did not imagine myself sobbing so late at night. I related to the characters in ways that I was not expecting and I loved being able to connect to the characters. Not only did this book have me sobbing but I was laughing in so many different parts.

Hallee and Dean are absolutely everything, and they will forever live in my heart. Halle is sunshine, and I related to her character in ways I didn’t know my soul needed to connect. She is strong, caring, and soft. She truly deserves all the love. Dean was absolutely everything. I was in love with him from the very beginning; he was just perfect. He was just the sweetest, caring, and so patient. I loved seeing their connection and chemistry and their love story was truly timeless. As I neared the end, my heart was not ready to let go, but I knew this would be my next comfort read. It is just so heartbreakingly beautiful and painful in all the best ways.

Overall this book is beautiful, raw, and unique. It will have you feeling so many different emotions and I definitely recommend having a box of tissues nearby. For a debut novel, it is so amazing and I cannot wait to see what Bex writes next.

I’ll Paint You a Sunset Someday by Bex Alexander is a debut contemporary romance novel that has sci-fi elements. Each year, everyone receives The Gift from the government. The Gift of Forgetting is a social experiment that is conducted by the government. Each year, they reset the population's memories and lives in hopes that it will promote joy, happiness, and freedom from anxieties and heartbreak. Hallee wakes up on January 1st with a clean slate and no memory; there is just a book that contains everything she needs to know about her life. One day, she meets Dean and can’t help but feel some type of pull towards him. As they get to know each other, Hallee finds herself falling more in love with Dean but also starts to feel a familiarity with him she can't explain. Is The Gift truly inevitable, or will they be able to hold onto their relationship?

I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys Contemporary Romance.

I’ll Paint You a Sunset Someday by Bex Alexander – Book Review

I went into I’ll Paint You a Sunset Someday completely blind—drawn in by the title and my love for sunsets. What I didn’t expect was a futuristic romance that would be so beautifully written and emotionally immersive. Bex Alexander’s debut novel proves she is an incredible storyteller, weaving together love, art, and a world that feels both hauntingly distant and deeply relatable.

The writing was stunning—poetic yet grounded, with prose that made me stop and reread certain lines just to soak them in. The futuristic setting wasn’t overwhelming or too sci-fi-heavy, but rather a subtle, poignant backdrop that enhanced the story’s themes of hope, longing, and the power of human connection.

The romance itself was unlike anything I anticipated, yet I adored it. It carried a bittersweet edge, making the emotional beats hit even harder. The characters felt raw and real, their struggles and triumphs resonating beyond the pages.

I love when a book surprises me, and I’ll Paint You a Sunset Someday did just that. If you’re looking for a beautifully written love story with a unique setting and deep emotional stakes, this one is worth picking up. Bex Alexander is definitely an author to watch!

Okay being fully honest that I have talked to the author of this book many many times so already I have some unapologetic positive bias.

When this book was marketed to even when I first started reading it, I was so intrigued with the sci fi/dystopian idea of The Gift. That is what drew me into it!! HOWEVER, as I kept reading, it was the characters that made me turn the pages. Normally in a romance I wouldn’t say the characters are deeply complex but wow would I be wrong to say that now.

Easily my favorite part of this book is the psychology class and how it connects all the little pieces right up until the very end.

5 stars - I highly recommend reading this story from Debut (and Amazon Best Selling!!) Author Bex Alexander.

Thank you for painting me a sunset.

My heart. This book. 😍 🌅
The words flow in this story, so beautifully poetic. A timeless love story.
This story has so many layers all woven together. The characters and their depth was something I really enjoyed the most. This story is told in dual timelines and multiple POV. This story felt like a warm hug reading it, there is sadness but overwhelming love. I laughed. I cried. I dreamed. i felt. I hoped for these characters. Most importantly I will remember this book!

I know this review is vague.. I dive into books blindly all the time and really feel like this one you just need to jump and feel, experience it.

THIS BOOK. This is it. This is the book you HAVE to read in 2025.

At the beginning of each year, everyone receives The Gift. The Gift of Forgetting is a social experiment conducted by the government which resets the population's memories and lives in an attempt to promote joy, happiness, and freedom from anxieties. Everything they need to know about their lives is bound in a book, waiting for them on each New Year's Day. January 1 is a clean slate. A fresh start.

Enter our sunshine girl, Hallee, and our sweet angel boy, Dean.

These two have captured my heart in a way I sort of find hard to explain. They have the sort of love that I hope everyone experiences. The kind that defies the odds, always hopes, endures all things. The kind that’s proof that love always wins.

I truly believe this book is for everyone. It is wholesome to its core and provides the most extreme sense of safety even when things feel upended. It's the most beautiful reminder to persevere, and I will forever be grateful for that reminder in this season of my life.

if you like:
- sunshine x sunshine
- the song "Invisible String" by Taylor swift
- found family
- a sci-fi twist on romance
- crying
- being filled with an infinite sort of hope
- wholesome romance
- iced coffee
- a love that's Timeless

I can't wait for you all to read this book, to find all of the intentional nuggets Bex has littered throughout this story & to tie all of the invisible strings together.

This novel is 👩🏻‍🍳😘

The gov’t has bestowed a “gift” on a group of civilians. The gift of forgetting. Each new year their memories are washed away and they are given the chance to live a new year with a clean slate. For Hallee this is fine until it isn’t; until she meets Dean; until she falls in love. Hallee learns that there has to be more to her than just striving for perfection, that life’s messes may be just what she needs. But how can she keep what she loves most when in only a few months she won’t even remember it?

If you are a fan of the Lovelight Farms series then add this book to your list ASAP.

Oh my goodness; this book just blew me away. I've sat with it for a few days and still can honestly say that I'm not sure what to write.

To start off - I've been following Bex on IG since well before her launch of this book, so her beautiful personality was already something that I really felt drawn to and inspired by. Also seeing her painting her sunset's? It really made me so excited for this book. I had planned to read it immediately upon release, but alas - life happened and it got pushed back a fair bit.

I think that I read it at the right time though. Firstly, the way in which Bex writes is magical. The way that she uses words creates such beautiful imagery and she truly creates such a beautiful symphony of love - love in all ways and forms. If you read this, you will never know (or believe) that this is a debut novel because of the magical way that she writes.

The love in this book just kept me going - it was heartbreaking and terrifying, and oh so beautiful. The defiance is beautiful, the hopeful optimism that keeps everyone going (even when they can't recognize it), the scary dreams, the representation... the grief is very intense and real. I loved how it was represented and truly felt; especially the message of how grief doesn't stop life - but it's there and it's a real feeling that you just learn to come to terms with. The characters, the found family, the friends are all just absolutely incredible and they will be stuck in my mind for a long time.

Hallee and Dean are sweet and untoxic couple doomed to forget each other on New Year’s Eve because the government brings out that red flashy thing from Men in Black on the whole population. It was a cute read with a lot of cosy moments despite the evil dystopian ramifications looming in the background. There was an adorable found family dynamic and some heartbreaking twists that I didn’t see coming. There WAS instalove, but there was an underlying reason behind it, so it didn’t bother me. The premise was really fascinating, and I found the jumps to the future where students were studying the time period of the main characters really cool. Sometimes, however, the dialogue could get a little saccharine, and the ‘best friend’ characters all acted as though the FMC and MMC were the centre of the universe, as though they knew they were supporting cast. The writing itself also felt quite clunky at times, even if there were some lovely lines in there.
Three and a half stars rounded up.

good for fans of:
-wholesome romance -Hallmark movies
-Taylor Swift. -grand gestures
-besties dating besties -hunky firefighter
-coffee shops -Taylor Swift (she comes up A LOT)

4.5 stars, rounded up ✨

I was so incredibly lucky to be gifted this ARC copy by Bex and I’m so excited she’s finally getting to share her masterpiece with the world. The writing is so delicate and charming, with such tender moments in a dystopian future that leaves everyone forgetting their previous year as the new one dawns. And the message?

“Everything matters, remember?”

It takes a look at the permanence of love when memory fails. The story is undeniably sweet and tragic, as Dean and Hallee find their way into the most unlikely of love stories, but Bex had me kicking my feet and giggling at the little sprinklings of “good girl” and a flawlessly jealous MMC throughout. It’s equal parts The Notebook and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue with such beautifully soft writing.

Dean and Hallee have my whole entire heart. 💛

“Art is valued; does he value me? If it’s all art, then maybe we’re continuously being sculpted into our final design. Each day is one step closer to becoming our own personal masterpiece of experiences that make us unique. There is still hope, then—that my happiest days are to come.”

Before this book existed the English language was just simple words waiting for Bex to turn them into a beautiful melodic symphony of love and hope. Please do yourself a favor and read this amazing masterpiece 🎶

I will be rereading this for years to come because I know there will be times that I need the reminders of hope and reminders that I’m loved. This story encapsulates everything this world needs so so desperately right now.

I’ll Paint You A Sunset Someday is a sweeter story than what I usually read, but not unwelcome (like a white chocolate mocha on a cold day… or a vanilla latte). I looooove the concept of The Gift (everyone’s memories resetting at the end of the year) and the questions it poses: Will I gravitate toward the same people and places over and over again? Can hearts remember when minds forget?

I also love non-chronological stories and thought that learning about The Experiment/The Gift in a future psychology class in one storyline while seeing it pan out for our main characters, Hallee and Dean, in real time was brilliant. There were also so many stunning lines that I would 100% underline if I believed in writing in books.

Bonus points for anxiety and OCD rep. Sometimes Hallee’s inner monologue was achingly similar to things I’ve thought myself. She and Dean truly have the sweetest, most wholesome love, and the whole book felt like getting a hug. I just know that this will be a comfort reread for me in the future.

Five stars for a beautiful debut novel and a beautiful cover designed by the author herself! 🌅 🎨🎈☕️💐🌻📚☀️💕

let me start off by saying i’ve waited oh so patiently to read this book since it was announced, and it absolutely blew my expectations out of the water!!!!

i was so charmed by the personalities of the characters, especially the way they were able to forge such strong bonds over the year they had together—i’m a sucker for found family!!! 🤭 i wasn’t sure what to make of the history class timeline at first, but as i read it grew on me immensely.

above all though, i’m obsessed with how this book was able to make me physically feel the same way the characters did—that is the making of a great writer!!! a definite five star read for me, but infinite stars in my heart 🥹🥹🥹

4.5 stars! This was such a unique and special story- one that is beautiful on the inside and out! A story filled with love, hope, and strong found family. There is a dystopian twist to this romance that I absolutely loved. I also appreciated the mental health rep. I immediately fell in love with the characters and storyline. The dual timeline kept me wondering where the story was headed and I loved how it all wrapped up in the end. It was such a heartwarming read! I was reviewing all my highlights before I wrote this review to find a quote to share. There are just so many quotes that I loved, so much so that I think everyone should just read it and experience it for themselves.

3.5 rounded up!

This book has such an interesting premise and beautiful writing.

The first half was a slight struggle for me and I struggled to connect emotionally with the characters but that second half? Everything ties together so well and I’m glad I stuck in there. The ending was perfect.

I wish there was little more attention paid to the kind of dystopian aspect in the first half and how that emotionally impacted the characters but it was there in the second half and that’s when I became so much more invested.

So proud of Bex for putting her heart and soul into this one.

I give this a 4.5. Half star down only because there’s so many questions I have about the government role and rules about the experiment. But that’s me 😂 I absolutely loved this book, for a non basic romance girly, this really was so good. I loved the concept and because the plot was so interesting with the dystopian aspects, I didn’t mind all the cheesy romance. It was beautifully set up and I loved it. Thank you to Samara for the rec. 💚
