With an abusive and tumultuous home life, Faye Frances finds her escape when her mother Rose enrolls her into BWS Catholic High School. Meeting her tour guide, Clyde Grimshaw, instantly becoming inseparable. Faye vowed that she would never fall in love or marry a man like her father Charles, a military man. Clyde Grimshaw was quite the opposite; strong in his catholic faith, a gentle giant who stood up for what is right and protecting those he loved, becoming a police officer.
Clyde was a doting father, an amazing husband, an exceptional police officer making a difference in the community of Briarwood Springs. Faye had thought she had it all, finding a love like no other, having the perfect family and life now. Faye, feeling safe and secure with Clyde, reveals a hint of her past traumatic home life. Clyde begins to change. Clyde becomes distant, staying late at work, going out late to the shooting range, everywhere but wanting to be home with Faye and their kids. Faye deciding it’s time to talk to Clyde and pays him a visit at work. Except Clyde isn’t there, Faye is informed by Clyde’s fellow colleague that he had been off the clock since 4 pm. Instantly thinking that Clyde is now having an affair, Faye begins spiraling when she finds Clyde pulling into the Night Club District.
Who knew that Faye would be so wrong? Clyde’s changes begin affecting their three children. The nightmares begin happening, their nightmares becoming their reality when they discover just what happens when falling in love with someone you’re supposed to trust, goes horrifically wrong.
What an interesting read. The author did a wonderful job and took us on a journey of what it feels to be between perfect love, escape and finding out the truth of it all.
Becoming Unhinged is a dark, gripping story that pulls you in with what looks like a hard-won happily ever after—and then slowly tears it apart. Faye’s escape from an abusive childhood into a life built on love, faith, and family feels earned and hopeful, which makes what follows all the more unsettling.
The gradual shift in Clyde is chilling. The distance, the secrecy, and the growing sense that something is deeply wrong are handled in a way that keeps the tension steadily rising. Just when you think you understand what’s happening, the story pivots, revealing something far more disturbing than expected. The impact on their children adds an extra emotional layer that makes the stakes feel painfully real.
This book doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable truths about trust, control, and how easily safety can become something else entirely. Intense, emotional, and genuinely disturbing in places, it’s a story that lingers long after the last page. A powerful read for those who can handle dark themes and psychological twists.
Although I admire the tremendous effort that took to write this book, it is definitely NOT for the faint of heart. It sheds light on a very important but super sensitive and painful topic. So if you’re mentally suited for such hard read, definitely go for it. The story itself is very interesting and unpredictable.
