Is it a history book a romance or both? This book was a joy to read with the characters from our history books interspersed with the story of Hannah our heroine ,the least likely spy you will ever encounter. Her passion for life ,our fledgling country and for family puts her in these circumstances but you will keep on reading for the love of two very different men as they vie for her heart. If you love historical fiction like the North and South series you will surely love this book."This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review".
Good enough plot, however, this writer does not know the first thing about grammer. A sentence is a complete thought. The writer leaves jagged colors of words that make no sense throughout the pages. This, I hesitate to call it a book, needs a good editing. Words are missing or in the wrong place. And, my biggest pet peeve, not completing the storyline within the pages. Why spend so much time on the brother's story, if you're not going to finish it. The heroine's story isn't completed with the threat of the British destroying her newfound peace. Good premise; poorly executed.
I think from a historical perspective, it's a fascinating book. It flows very well. (I was somewhat concerned that the dialogue might be a bit too boring, but it wasn't.) Hannah is a very determined woman. Stubborn in her own right, but has a fiery passion for the Patriot cause. When members of her family are attacked and killed, she sets out to find out who's behind it so she can plot her revenge. While I don't agree with everything she did in the book, I admire her courage and strength to see things through.
Jonathan strikes me as a man who loves his family, but has been dealt an unfair hand. A wife who betrayed him. A sister that he knows is in danger. A son he's barely seen. And he's a doctor attending to wounded and dying soldiers while trying to make sense of it all. It's an exhausting situation, mentally as well as physically. Like Hannah, I believe he tries to find some quiet strength to keep him going, but it's difficult.
While reading this book, I couldn't help but think that both figures must have felt entirely alone too much in their respective situations. A doctor dealing with all the demands of war and a spy trying to help the cause without putting too many lives, including her own, in danger.
Note: There is some sex, but I'm happy to say that the author doesn't saturate every page with sexual scenes or references because it would distract us from the historical events that unfolded during the war.
I found these books to be very good and I enjoyed reading them. They are well written and keeps you interested. I offered to read these books to give a review......I was in no way offered any thing to read these books! Again, I thought they were well written and I enjoyed the characters!
Winds of Betrayal by Jerri Hines is a well crafted, well written family saga taking place during the Revolutionary War between the States of America and England. It is a story of love, deceit, spies, traitors and more in one story. Each character is nicely fleshed out, giving the reader reasons to love ... or hate ... each character.
The beginning of Winds of Betrayal started out very slowly, as Ms. Hines introduced each character and their background or connections to other characters. However, by page 8 (in the ebook) this book picks up speed quickly and doesn't slow down. Once Hannah falls partway out of a tree while trying to hear what the men are discussing in another room but gets stuck in a tree thanks to her shoes, the book picks up speed and grabs the reader and doesn't stop the ride.
In my view, this book really should have been a 5 star book. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars are the several grammatical errors, i.e., "her hands her hands" and "rifleman" when it should have been "riflemen", throughout the book. Another reader's review mentions several other types of errors, but by the time I read Winds of Betrayal, those errors were fixed, or at least they were on the ebook version I read.
There was one scene in the latter part of the book which I found a bit gory. Others may not see it as gory, however.
This is Book 1 in a 2 book book series. It stands alone on its own, with a very solid ending. I look forward to reading Book 2, as well as other books by Jerri Hines.
I started this thinking that over the next day or so I'd finish it. I finished it in less than a day. The action never stops. If it seems to, you're not paying attention or you haven't made the connection yet. Be patient. Keep reading. It will all pick up speed once again- like going from center to a gallop & back & forth, a trot is too slow for this story. Women have always done amazing things. Every war, they tended the wounded, acted as spies, ran households on next to nothing, kept the spirits of those around them up, & in the face of backbreaking tragedy, kept going....sometimes, until they dropped. And then, they got back up again & moved forward. Men have one type of courage; women another. Both are necessary in war & in peace, in good times & bad. Could you do something like this? Yes, if the circumstances require it, both men & women have done & will continue to do what seems impossible. Whether it is your country or your family or something else, humans endure. This book is about one such woman. Think about the horrors with which she lived. And yet, she carried om. I hope you find yourself as amazed & inspired as I did. This one is one I will eventually re-read. I don't do that often.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.
Historically accurate and incredibly moving, this book has all the components of a great book. While many fictional books have been written about the American Revolution, I have not read one so deeply involved in the spying done by our women Patriots.
Hannah & her family were staunch Patriots. When betrayed by one close to them, most of her immediate family was wiped out. With her brother Jonathan in the Continental army as a physician, Hannah decides to "visit " her grandmother's home. Now part of the spy network, she searches for the information that will reveal who betrayed her family & that which will aid in the Revolution.
This is a book depicts joys, sorrows, love, hate, betrayal, revenge, & contentment. It's a book I highly recommend, believing that this author has managed to convey the true experiences of some of the bravest in history.
Hannah was from a entrenched Virginia family that she loved dearly. She was the only girl child of her father’s. She was protected and loved by all around her. When her father, brother, stepmother, aunt, uncle, and one male cousin where killed she took it upon herself to throw caution to the wind and find out who had them murdered. She descended upon New York in the pretense of visiting her grandmother but was really there to spy upon the British during the American Revolution. She achieved what she came there to do but then the people she was doing the spying for turned their backs on trying to get her out of New York before it fell. Her desperation for her freedom and longing to go back home became a harrowing affair to everyone that loved her. There are three more books in this series and I can’t wait to read them to see if I get a peak into the rest of Hannah’s life as the war continues on in this book.
I'm not sure if I chose this one or it was give for a review. By the cover I can't imagine I'd have chosen it. But I do love historical fiction. And in that aspect it's fairly good. But like too many series it just ends. And I despise the character of Marcus Durham. What a selfish jerk. And from the terrible cover I assumed it was one of those sappy romance novels. I just could not figure this one out. I'd have loved it without that crappy love story bit that seems to be added for no good reason. This was so close to being good but just fell a bit short. The battles were well done though.
This is a well written story of a young woman who spys for the patriots during the revolution. The tale provides plenty of grim reminders of price of war with lots of family members killed and other dangers and deceptions. However my chief complaint with the story is that the end isn't the end; it is clearly written to entice you to buy the next book in the series although the story line or the characters are not so likeable or compelling for me to do so. Be forewarned.
Excellent well-written and researched Revolutionary War Spy novel involving a young woman, Hannah, who endured the worst of horrors discovering her immediate family betrayed and killed via targets from extended family members in their divide of loyalties. For revenge, she becomes a spy for the Patriots, yet pursued by a British soldier who attempts to save her. Extremely detailed in relating battles and strategies involving both sides with graphic sensual scenes and explicit gore portrayed. Novel has closure but also is continued related to being part of a saga.
I read the whole thing. It was…good. It was exciting. However, it was hard to follow the timeline with big gaps between the two story lines of the protagonist and the war/her brother. Also, while I understand keeping names true to history makes sense, I really struggled to keep track of who was who and where their loyalty lay. I don’t believe Hannah would really have made some of the choices she did.
I liked the interwoven family saga that was incorporated with historical events! I just don't think a book has to be so graphic in sexual details, I find it adds NOTHING to the story. Maybe there needs to be different categories so I don't get this type! Thanks, Kathy Easley
Very good, engaging story but poor paragraph structure detracts and causes confusion. At one point, a new paragraph started in the middle of a sentence. At many points dialogue was run together, so that there were multiple speakers in the same paragraph, so it was hard to tell who said what.
This story brought back those history lessons I learned many years ago. But this time the history came alive and I was part of the story. Rooting for the Patriots, fearful of the British and proud of the growing American Spirit! So much loss, but so much gain: a new country under a new Congress, under God!
Strong and interesting fictional characters are woven with historical persons, creating a novels that is tense, filled with surprising twists and a look at the everyday lives of those living during the start of the American Revolution. We realize the constitutional, liberties many take for granted were fought with lives, sacrifices and honor.
Very hard to follow. The dialogue was not easy to tellwho was speaking in many cases and I would have to go back and re-read passages to figure it out. There were a lot of characters and it was tough to follow who was who when one moment they went by a last name and the next a first name. I think the editor didn’t do too great a job editing. The story was good though.
I absolutely devoured this book! Interesting, well developed characters and exciting scenes. From the battlefields to espionage, family intrigue and love. Definitely will be reading more of this series and Imaginative author!
A great book of historical fiction set during the revolutionary war. A young girl fight for the cause she believes in but loses many along the way. She finds out how strong she really is when those she depends on, let's her down when she needed them most.
I was up all night reading because I couldn't put it down! Brings the war for independence to life in a way that will make you realize how much they gave up to be free! A true appreciation for our forefathers! Good read!!
This book makes the war between Colonists and British very clear. They all faced danger every day. Especially when being a spy behind enemy lines. Hannah's story will remain in my memory for some time.
It was honestly really hard to follow this at times due to the grammatical errors. Who cleared this for publishing? Storyline was okay. Honestly, there’s many other quality books out there that you don’t need to bother with this one.
Once I began reading, I had difficulty putting the book down. The suspense kept me engaged and intrigued. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
