Midnights is a glimpse into the mad, macabre and mysterious mind of bestselling author Greig Beck; in a showcase of horrors, monsters and bone-chilling tales.
This short story collection will take you into the depths of Beck's dark from what happens when the deepest bore hole on Earth has just passed nine miles and hits a strange open space - and it's hellishly hot down there; to an Antarctic research team examining fragments from a deep ice glacier and discovers a tiny seed that, once thawed, grows into something terrifyingly unexpected.
Then there's the real story of the Titanic, where something horrifying boards the grand ship, and it's sunk, intentionally - to protect us all. And Beck's renowned Valkeryn series will finally be concluded in the featured tale Revenge of the Wolfen.
From the bloody to the bizarre, Midnights will push you to the edge, with Greig Beck at the helm and at his frightening best.
Hi GoodReaders, I’m an Australian author residing in Sydney with my wife, son and a mad Golden Retriever named Jessie. My novels are now available globally, also in Large Print and now in full AUDIO format.
I grew up spending my days surfing at Bondi Beach before entering a career in Information technology which took me around the world. After completing an MBA, i was appointed both an Australasian director of a multinational software company, and tasked with setting up the USA arm of the organisation.
Today, I spend most of my time writing... with plenty left over for surfing.
More information about me and my works can be found at either www.greigbeck.com, or join me on FaceBook (Greig Beck Author).
This book has nineteen stories and they are all about everything. But the last story is about the wolfen. Something I’ve never heard of before.
The Wolfen lives one million years in the future. They are descendants of wolves and they are similar in appearance, but they are much larger and humanoid beings.
Yes! They also look human. They have a human shaped body and the face of a wolf. Which is why they are called Wolfen. Unlike a wolf, they are massively tall and have a very large massive body and a large wolf head.
I am glad that I have read this story. I couldn’t wait until I was ready to read it. I had to read all the other stories in this book before I could finally get to read this one.
Don’t get me wrong. The other stories are great, but they are not the same. This story is much longer than the others. It has a beginning, a middle and an ending.
I've been a fan of Greig Beck for a while now, and this collection does not disappoint. From what I understand, these stories are plot hooks that he had kicking around for a while, and he decided to finally write them out. The collection is solidly good, and spans several different genres. My favorites were:
•Nine Miles Down •The Milwaukee Deep •The Voynich Manuscript
I’d been putting off Midnights for a while, as I don’t usually enjoy short story collections. I prefer getting stuck into a full-length novel where the story has time to breathe. But I finally gave this one a go, and to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Most of the stories are tight, engaging, and well-paced. A few standouts, like Nine Miles Down and The Voynich Manuscript, easily felt like they could’ve been expanded into full novels. Both had that classic Beck atmosphere and tension, with just enough mystery to leave you wanting more.
Not all stories hit the same note for me. Revenge of the Wolfen was the only one I didn’t really connect with - mainly because fantasy isn’t my thing. But that’s more about personal taste than any fault in the writing.
Some stories were a little offbeat in the best possible way. Jerry Lost a Toe and A Fish Called Steve were quirky and fun, with just the right length for what they were trying to do. They didn’t overstay their welcome, and they added a bit of variety to the mix.
Overall, Midnights was a really enjoyable read. Even for someone who isn’t usually a fan of short stories, this collection managed to keep me entertained from start to finish. Well worth picking up, whether you're a long-time Beck fan or just looking for a solid set of bite-sized thrillers.
I was a bit skeptical to read the stories. I am generally not a fan of short stories, bring me full fledged novels. However I was pleasantly surprised. All the longer stories in the collection were really good. Even the shorter ones were interesting. Barring a couple of the shorter ones I had a really good time with all the stories.
I would love to actually see a few of them turn into full blown books. The last story, a kind of conclusion to the the valkeryn novel started a bit slow, but I got to like even that one towards the end. I have not read the first 2 books in the Valkreryn series, but I could still enjoy this small ending.
All in all I had a good time. Eagerly waiting for the next Alex Hunter book :)
If you are Greig Beck, there’s little gripe from me. He can do anything, as far as I’m concerned. Even make me love a collection of short stories! I think what got me the most with the shorts was the tale of the seed found in the Antarctic! That one right there- SCARY1 But to have the ending to the Valkeryn was what truly made the book’s perfect ending. I couldn’t have imagined a better ending to the tale.
These shorts are crazy creepy, funny- like The Monsters Are Coming. Funny- creepy, as with Jerry Lost a Toe and Nine Miles Down… why don’t people listen to me when I yell at them in books? So good. Yu have to read them. Love them.
Greig Beck’s imagination has no limits, and this collection of short stories reflects back. These tales take us from the deepest depths of the earth to the farthest reaches of space to the far-flung future. Horror, sci-fi, fantasy, whimsy … it’s all here. Like all anthologies, some stories hit harder than others, but they are all of a very high quality. As a bonus, Beck includes the final installment of his Valkeryn Chronicles, and this story was enough to send out after the earlier books in this series. Well done, Mr. Beck.
I think this was the first time I read short stories by Greig Beck, and I found them pretty good. I think I enjoy his longer stories best though, as the story in this book that I enjoyed most turned out to be the last one. All of the stories are sort of horror, most of them feature a creature or two, and most of them are bloody. And they were all pretty good too.
I have read all of Greig Beck's books, and they never disappoint! Beck's imagination dreams up true scary stories with monsters and things that go bump in the night! He's a true spooky story teller!
I normally don't read many short stories, but I have been anticipating this collection by Greig Beck since it was first announced. It did not disappoint. Every story was great. 10/10. Loved the horror. Highly recommend to everyone that loves this genre.
An enjoyable selection of how we end the world. So many options. Greig Beck is a great storyteller and can condense down a feeling of dread in just a few paragraphs.
I had been looking forward to this book and it didn't disappoint. There are 12 assorted horror stories, and I liked them all. Some have a touch of whimsey, like Grampa tells Tall Tales, and Jerry Lost a Toe, and they were just weird and fun and made me smile. My faves were probably Nine Miles Down, Germination, The Milwakee Deep, because they have creatures, isolation, which are my go to loves. A very fast read fo me and I loved it.
