To those still waiting,

I would still like to finish these stories one day. Unfortunately, if I am going to be completely honest with myself and with you, that day may never come. Life can change a lot in a year - let alone five - and we should never make promises we can't be certain we'll keep.

I am sorry. And thank you, so much.

George.

The story was wonderful. An emotional roller coaster from the start and I'm still a mess after a week.

The story was beautifully written and It's clear the author spent a lot of time writing it. I fell in love with the characters and their story and I loved every second of watching their lives play out before me.

I wish the author was still active because all his stories are page-turners that I always become glued to.

This is one of the TRULY rare occasions where a fanfiction is better than the source material. George DeValier deleted his stuff, but it’s worth digging up on Wattpad to read on a rainy day.
Honestly, this story is best if you read it while pretending it’s completely original and that Hetalia never existed.
It’s good. Indulgent, for sure. Read it.

The story was absolutely beautiful, the characters deep, and the feels suffocating. I had to go to school the day after I binge read it and randomly burst into tears at odd moments because it left me a mess. This was probably one of the most beautiful love stories I've read, thick with horror, hardship, and conflicting emotions.

This is most definitely worth the read, no matter what genre you are a fan of.

Auf Wiedersehen is without a doubt my favorite book ever. The entire series is amazing, but this one had me laughing hysterically one minute, and crying my eyes out the next. It was such an emotional roller coaster, and broke my heart. I absolutely loved it

Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart is a story about love and loyalty. The characters Ludwig Beilschmidt, a German fighter pilot, and Feliciano Vargas, an Italian resistance member unexpectedly fall in love. It will test their loyalty to their countries and to each other.

I really like how the fic could stand alone without reading the manga. There was not an over exaggeration of their personalities either like in the manga. This made them more believable humans. But what I didn't like was the over feminization of Feliciano, that's a common problem in the fan base, so that can be overlooked. Also another thing, it works in the manga, but it is not realistic to have everyone be openly gay in the 1940's. But all in all, I thought the fanfic was well written and good mix of heartbreak and fluff.

This was my jam when I was 12, very epic.

Rereading this in 2025 and I have to say, this is extremely coherent and the plot is INSANE. Everything has consequences, damn, I love myself some actions & consequences shit.

This story still crushes my soul when I think of it. I've long since left the Hetalia fandom, but Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart holds a special place in my heart. Never before had a fan written work brought me to tears. Years have passed, nearly half a decade but each chapter is still fresh in my mind. Whenever the topic of World War 2 is brought up almost immediately my mind will drift to this story.

Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart is an intimate heart wrenching love story that is not to be forgotten any time soon by those who have read it. The story continues to be a legend from a once popular fandom and has made its place in the original shows history.

One of the best written fan fictions I have ever read. The story is well detailed with history and the author shows that he knows what he is writing about- something so many other stories lack. I've read this story at least three times and still continue to go back and read my favorite parts. Thank you George DeValier!

I have to say, this book is no master piece, it has lots of flaws.
But I enjoyed it so much, and it made me feel happy at one moment and having me sobbing in the other, than I had to give it 5 stars.

Normally I never read fanfics, but I heard this one was very popular amongst the Hetalia fandom, so I gave it a try and it did not disappoint. The way love is portrayed so beautifully! I love the symbolic meaning of the songs “Auf wiedersehen, sweetheart” and “Bella ciao” and how it is very well written in the story. But there are a few flaws throughout the book, and also some points I have critique over.
Firstly, its historically inaccurate. In the time this story takes place, Italy was occupied by Germany and German soldiers refrained from speaking to Italian citizens. But the story starts with a German soldier shouting to Feliciano, which results in Ludwig and Feliciano meeting. So if this story was historically accurate, nothing would actually happen.
Secondly, this is my opinion, but I do not like the side couples. I get that this fanfic was made in 2010, and the fandom may had different opinions then, but I still find this odd. The main side couple is Antonio x Lovino, who have an obvious father-son dynamic in the show. This is the same for Alfred x Arthur, there are multiple scenes where one can see that Arthur is portrayed as an adult and Alfred a child. Regardless, I did not really mind them because they have a 2-4 year age gap. There is a scene where Roderich mentioned Gilbert, only for a brief moment, but it was made clear they are lovers. At the time this was written, it was not confirmed yet that Ludwig and Roderich are cousins, making Gilbert and Roderich cousins too. Luckily this couple is not of importance for the story, so its not a big problem.
Thirdly, the way it is written has some flaws. I have noticed the use of “… and … and …” is overused and not grammatically correct. That is my only complaint.
This story is so heartwarming but also so heartbreaking. I feel so bad for Ludwig, Antonio and Alfred, they did not deserve going through that😭I admit I cried a lot, and every time Feliciano begs Ludwig to stay I sympathize with him. I love forbidden relationship stories, and it was portrayed so well in this fanfic. The emotions are written so well, you can clearly read Feliciano and Ludwigs love for each other. I am not disappointed with the bittersweet ending!
“The moment we met, I saw it. I saw you. You are such a wonderfully kind person, but you don't want anyone to know it. You have secret depths of passion that you hide within yourself out of fear. You love too deeply, but you try to deny it, because you know that the deeper you love, the more you hurt. Your heart is so fragile, which is why you keep it locked in an iron cage. But I am pretty sure that this cage has a lock. And if it takes me five years, or ten, or fifty… I am determined to find the key. Because I will never break something so precious, just to find out what is inside. I could give you a thousand words, and describe you a thousand ways. But in the end it is very simple. I want you because I love you. No one else. You are the only one. You are my only one.”

“You'd wait that long?”

“Forever, mi corazón.”
Bonus: I loved reading the characters dialoge’s in their accents!!

George delivered with this masterpiece of a fan fiction. This fic, like most other top tier Hetalia AU fics, can be read as something separate from the Hetalia universe and I find that amazing itself.

Feliciano is a young Italian who's family is the Italian Resistance. Ludwig is a young flight lieutenant stationed in Italy, where the two meet after Feliciano has a run in with some occupying German's demanding to see his identification papers.

the story also mentions my favorites, Lovino and Antonio, but not nearly enough understandably so. This story builds a (then) taboo relationship in the middle of World War II. George delivers the best story with bittersweet romance, harsh reality during war, and parallels beautifully with We'll Meet Again.

And the smut is done so in such a nice and beautiful way it really feels meaningful.

I seriously wanted to cry, and laugh and a million emotions were in me at once. I don’t think I have read a romance book quite as good as this, and the fact that it is a fan-fic is even crazier and makes it more amazing.
My heart was pounding and aching throughout the entire thing, and that ending?!!! Absolutely perfect, which is not something many people can do.
I also liked the fact that it included practically all of the main characters from the original, but it still made sense.
This is truly the best love story I have ever read, and nothing is more deserving of five stars.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 🇮🇹🇩🇪

Side note a little less then a week later:
I have now read 6 of these fanfics by the same author, and this one was BY FAR the best. In order it goes:
1. Auf Werdishen, sweetheart
2. We’ll Meet again
3. Besame Mucho and Lily of lamplight are tied (but both were never finished 😭😭😭)
4. La patisserie de la Rose
5. Catch perfect (also never finished)

All were absolutely brilliant and beautifully and I really recommend reading them, all quick reads.

i have avoided this fic like the plague for YEARS because of the things that i heard about it, but over the summer, i decided that it was finally time for me to read it. it was the best decision i made. this fic genuinely brought me many smiles and many tears, which makes me hold it dear to my heart. yes, there are those people who complain about the USUK and the SpaMano features in the fic, but is it really, truly something to complain about? this fic is an older one, created when most people did not act so "goody-goody". it is a fanfic, which dont always follow canon. over all, this fic was amazing and i hold it dear.

I really love the story, the way he put each characters in the situation, the way it was written, and how memorable the quotes are, and the fact that you don't need to know about the fandom in order to read this, I'm planning on letting one of my friend read this.
I couldn't get over how great the story and characters are, there may be some flaws of the story but overall I really enjoyed it, I would re-read this
I'm really upset that I came late to this fandom cause I'm missing out a lot of good stuff...

I've read this story so many times and still come back to it. This is one of the greatest fanfictions that I have ever came across from many fandoms I'm in, the story made me cry tears of joy and sadness during the summer nights when I first readed it back in 2023 (been in the fandom since 2018 but haven't been up to reading it). The style of writing is just chefs kiss and can make almost anyone cry with the specific words and the storyline. Big thank you and respects to the author who sadly dissapeared from the internet yet his Legacy is still kept up by fans who Love him ♡

This made me cry so much. When i finished reading it i was left empty ajd sad but the thought that Ludwig and feliciano were finally happy together made me cry tears of happiness. Truly, this story is beautiful in so many ways.
Everything from the scenery to the way the author describes things it makes it feel like you're there with them under the tree.
Every character is enjoyable in its own way.
This story deserves its own movie, it would be so beautiful.

This fic is so beautiful and emotional you can forget that at its core it’s based around Hetalia. Even if you have never watched or heard of Hetalia I implore you to read this. This fanfiction is better than most published books I have read recently. The story is raw and strong and it makes you question if you want to keep on reading for your own sanity but at the end it’s all worth it. I cannot wait to read the others in the Veraverse collection even if they’re unfinished.

This book was so heart touching and had you hanging off of its every word. George out did himself with auf wiedersehen sweetheart and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good tearjerker or historical romance. As someone who reads 99% of the time I can say this book is in my top 5 list and I would gladly read it again.

"Five more goals smashed against the oak tree and Feliciano was fairly sure of three things.

One — he was the worst goal keeper in Italy.

Two — pretty soon there was going to be a hole right through his favourite tree.

Three — when Ludwig smiled, he was the most beautiful person in the entire world."

I never thought something like this could be written well - some strange situations, some weird dialogues, a somewhat strangely convoluted world.
I look at it this way... Fanfiction... Nothing is real. But how many things u can learn from it...After reading it, you will think about the entire World War II.
Shoutout to the author.
