Big Cat was puuurfectly silly! We checked this one out from the library a while ago, and I still catch myself giggling when I think about it. The humor is goofy in the best way. The illustrations are full of fun little details that kept us looking at each page longer. It has everything I love in a children’s book: silliness, expressive animals, background illustrations, and a sweet family member. I’ll definitely be keeping it in mind for future gifts!
Big Cat is a funny story about felines and friends when instead of finding Grandma’s missing glasses they find a friendly new cat. This cat is a little different to the others, but it takes Grandma a little while to work out why. With a subtle nod to Judith Kerr’s ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, Lazell captures the unique characteristics of this new cat through her funny storytelling and energetic, colourful illustrations. On every page there are little details hidden within the artwork that bring the characters and their personalities to life.
Covering themes of unexpected friendships throughout the funny light hearted story this book would be enjoyed by children from EYFS to Year 2.
Isobel's Grandma has lost her glasses, and when a stray cat wanders into the garden, Isobel and her Grandma adopt the very big cat. Without her glasses, Grandma can't see that the new cat is really a tiger! Food goes missing, and all the little cats are jealous. How will Isobel take care of such a big cat, and when will Grandma realize her mistake?
This is the cutest, most adorable picture book I've ever seen! The story is so funny and whimsical. The characters are a delight, and I love how Isobel just takes things in stride when a massive tiger moves into the house. Meanwhile, Grandma is utterly oblivious, and can't understand why they keep running out of cat food.
The illustrations are bright with wild splashes of color and movement. I especially love all the little details in the background of each page. We can look for Grandma's glasses hidden behind a flower pot. We see a newspaper advertising "Missing Tiger!", and Isobel reads a book about tigers while the tiger reads a book about Humans. So many sweet details like that, which make this book truly special and a joy to read.

When your grandmother already owns too many cats to count, it's no big deal to find one you've never seen before... but Grandma has lost her glasses and can't see that this new cat is a little different. He's a little too big, a little too hungry, and a little too much like a tiger!
This picture book is fun and humorous with cute and colorful illustrations! It's so very clear that this is no ordinary 'cat' but grandma can't tell and so the tiger assimilates into her and Isobel's lives, making them that much more fun!
We loved seeing how the other cats reacted to the new 'cat' throughout the story. The extra commentary from the original cats through hand-drawn signs made this extra silly!
One little girls granny is a cat person. She has many of them and knows them all by name. While searching for grandma’s glasses the little girl stumbles across a big cat. They ask the neighbors if they were missing him, but they were anything other than cat people. Unfortunately, the big cat came to live with grandma and her cats and took up a lot of space and left no food behind. The doorbell rings and there are two big cats at the door with a pair of glasses. What do you think happens next?
Author Emma Lazell has created a hilarious read for anyone who loves cats and even if you don’t. Over the top illustrations are vibrant and hilarious. Short sentences burst with humor and are easy to read for beginners. Parents and teachers will welcome this fun read-a-loud for storytime.
Big Cat is an incredible debut book from Emma Lazell, who is without a shadow of a doubt, an absolute rising star with vast talent. Big Cat is wonderfully illustrated with plenty of humour and tells a charming story about a tiger that’s accidentally adopted by a grandma who can’t find her glasses. It’s a heart-warming story, which can be read again and again and will no doubt become a classic. I’d highly recommend this book and think it would make an amazing gift – I’m over the moon with my purchase and I look forward to future books from Emma.
Cat lovers are going to find this little cat mystery a real pleasure. Even those who are not friends of felines will be entertained as grandma continues her search for her lost glasses, missing out on clues as to who Big Cat really is.
A silly story of misplaced glasses and an accidental Tiger pet. My 3.5 year old loved the silliness of it and wanted to read it every night for bedtime. Kind of reminiscent of other stories about zany pets, like how to hide a lion, it hits that silliness sweet spot for 3 year old but isn’t anything so unique, really.
Short-sighted Grandma has mislaid her glasses. That's why she doesn't notice that the new cat in the house is a young tiger! Another lovely children's easy-reading book with beautiful illustrations.
A heartfelt, humorous story plus colorful, silly illustrations are mixed perfectly together in Big Cat to create a sweetly amusing and wildly fun picture book. Little readers will giggle with Isobel and Grandma, while eagerly pouring over the fun detail filled pictures. Big Cat has big laughs, big heart, and an unforgettable big surprise!
My littles and I have quite enjoyed reading this book several times. The illustrations are colorful and fantastic and the story line is funny. Read my full review here: https://agoodreid.blogspot.com/2019/0...
There’s something about tigers in picture books that always make them a winner! Because just like Judith Kerr’s classic, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and Lizzy Stewart’s enchanting There’s a Tiger in my Garden, Emma Lazell’s new picture book Big Cat is a must read! This heart-warmingly, hilarious picture book tells the story of Isobel and her Grandma, some lost specs and a very big cat..! The fun and chaos makes for a brilliant twist which young readers will love, but Lazell also shares a charming underlying message of family, acceptance and finding new friends. And not to mention Lazell’s bright and bold illustrations make this a book any child will pull from a shelf and want keep forever. A classic in the making.
