As always, Jenny Colgan brings the reader a story with likeable, and some dislikeable, characters in a beautiful setting. This story follows the life of Essie Munroe, who is living the life she dreamed of (nearly) in Edinburgh....a job she enjoys (where she makes loads of money), a dreamy boyfriend who is wealthy and successful, and ... yeah, that about covers it. Her dream life is suddenly shattered when the company she works for decides to move to Switzerland...and they aren't taking her job along. She is devastated and lost and doesn't have a clue what she is going to do. She soon finds herself moving back in with her mum in high above the Scottish Highlands, aka nowhere she wants to be, just until she finds another dream job to move her back to the city. Her mother, Janey, an audiologist at the local hospital, is excited to have Essie home with her and hopes it will be a bonding time for the two who haven't been particularly close since Janey and her husband divorced. Will life in small town Carso be forever changed when Essie settles in or will it be Essie, and others, who will be forever changed? This book has such wonderful and believable characters, a storyline that has ups, downs, twists, turns, and, in typical Colgan style, more than a little romantic interest. I enjoyed this book and really would love to visit Carso, have a pint down at The End of the World, and snuggle some oversized puppies.
