Blood of the Immortal

Rate this book
I had no life…

For the past ten years, I’ve been kept away from the world, treated as a danger to those around me. While the visions I have both confuse and frighten me, I know I’m not the dangerous one in the family. Escape has never been within my reach. When my father dragged me along on an expedition to an ancient temple, I discovered a door hidden in the wall, and everything changed.

He would live forever…

After freeing a vampire from his stone prison, I was swept away to the island belonging to his coven. He swears none of them will harm me, but I can’t be so sure. Zachary is convinced he knew me before he was imprisoned—three hundred years ago. He tries to get me to remember our shared past…while I find myself more concerned with our future.

My blood could end them…

When the woman I was mistaken for appears, she brings startling revelations for both of us. She knows more about me than I ever knew about myself. My blood is unique, and the key to a dark plot by the vampires that locked Zachary away. Vowing to protect me, Zachary must find a way to shield me from his worst enemy, for if the enemy gets my blood, the entire world will be in danger.

Have you ever finished a book couldn’t find adequate words to describe your reading experience? Because that's the position I find myself in.

This was a roller-coaster ride from start to finish. From the first chapter, it's action packed, but the second half is nonstop action. I didn't want to put it down. But at the same time I felt the need to post status updates about it, and that's rare for me. Normally I don't think about it or can't tear myself away from what I'm reading. But in this case, I just had to share my reactions as I read.

I do have to say that there were a lot of characters introduced in this book. None of them were throwaway characters, the all played a part in the story. But since this is book 1 in the series, I can see how the author was setting up the characters for future books.

My absolute favorite part of this book was Vic. He’s a secondary character that wasn’t introduced until the second half of the book, but he totally stole the show in every scene. I’m hoping that he’ll get his own book. :)

I don't have any big complaints about this book. Nothing ticked my irritable acts list. Well, there was one issue but it was totally a personal thing. There was a bad guy that was killed off in the book and the death was entirely too quick for me. After all the crap that the bad guy pulled, I wanted a drawn out and torturous death. But that's just me being blood thirsty. ;)

This book was well written and a really good debut novel. Ashley Jeffers definitely has talent. I can’t wait to see what new future books will bring.

3 Warp Speed Stars

Get ready to set your cruise control to: Light Speed. Don't blink. Don't even stop at go. If you don't heed my advice, you'll miss it all.

This was a fast paced story usually filled with action at about every turn of some sort. (Had I not had family in town, my daughter's birthday party to do, and a house to clean, I could have read this all in one sitting.)

What I Liked:
1. Loved Vic
2. Dual POVs for most of the book.
3. Zachary. Loving, gentle, kind, patient, protective, mindful of others & their feelings.
4. Zachary's feelings for Arielle.
5. Fast paced story.
6. Issues resolved very quickly.
7. The synopsis really did its job by drawing me in.
8. Liked the action as it kept me trapped to the story.
9. Soul-mates. Zachary and Arielle are soul-mates and I'm a sucker for those scenarios.

What Bothered Me:
1. The cover. Even though the synopsis sold me, the cover did not. Had I not read this for a read to review, I would have put this on the back burner due to the cover. It looks like a graphic novel even though its not. I think a different cover would help sell this book more. Or maybe that's just my view on it.
2. Arielle ran away too much.
3. Everything was way too dang fast. Some things felt ridiculous and/or needed a better build up.
4. I never felt any real depth to Arielle or her feelings for Zachary. I couldn't believe her at times due to how she acts through out the story.
5. Arianna should never have been redeemable.
6. Why did Monica and Rick fall off the pages of the book? What happened with them after certain events? Will we see them again in book 2?
7. Some major things were "tell me's" instead of "show me's".

Over All
I truly enjoyed this story as it kept my interest and made me want to reach the final outcome without looking ahead. I enjoyed the action, characters and story line.

Side Note: Even though we are introduced to a lot of characters, I found it easy to keep track of everyone.

Had the author taken more time developing the couple and gave their relationship, as well as showed us instead of telling us about other certain events, this would have easily been a 4 star rating.

I would recommend this story to fans who love instant-love and who are a fan of soul-mates and Twilight. I loved Twilight and I felt some Twilight undertones. I'm sure there is no connection whatsoever, but for me it seemed that way. Which honestly didn't bother me at all. And again, that's my own opinion.

Lindsay: So, Nikki…we’re talking paranormal today.

Nikki: Woot! I love paranormal!

Lindsay: Me too! And today we’re looking at a debut novel from Ashley Jeffers.

Nikki: Yay! A debut! I love when we find brand new authors!

Lindsay: Me too. What was your overall impression of Blood of the Immortal?

Nikki: Well, I thought it was pretty good for a debut. The story line was pretty interesting and unique, even though I was a little confused by a few things and I wished the author had added a map and maybe a family tree for reference.

Lindsay: I totally agree with you. There were so many people that were introduced that having a family tree would have been helpful. And I love when I get a map to an area I’m not familiar with. Both of those would have been a great addition to the book.

Nikki: Yup. The one complaint I have, which I kind of blame on you :D Is not knowing the book was set not only in the future, but also in an alternate universe. I think that could have been explained more in the beginning to prepare the readers so it wouldn't be so confusing. Or maybe my natural blond was just coming through... ;)

Lindsay: Hey! I know we read each others minds and all, but you’ve never mentioned that you need a heads up to future settings and alternate universes! You never said a word when we threw ourselves into KA’s fantasyland series! And I’m totally calling you a blonde on this one! :P

Nikki: LOL! Well, ok so it's not all your fault. But I don't typically go for the futuristic books. I can dig an alternate universe, I just like to know going in so my natural ability to get confused doesn't get triggered! :D But once I figured all that out, this book got a little less confusing. There were still some times with all the characters mentioned, but after a while it was easier to get passed that.

Lindsay: I can totally understand that. But in the defense of the book, the futuristic stuff was really only in the beginning. After Arielle met Zachary, it almost had a historical paranormal feel to it. There was one point while reading that I did think to myself that a lot of people were introduced. But I also realize that this is book 1 in a series so she was trying to balance the story for the book with world building and setting the stage for the future books.

Nikki: You have a point there! It would definitely make sense to introduce us to the characters that we'll meet in later books. And while there were a lot of characters, I can't really think of too many that weren't necessary to the story.

Lindsay: That’s very true. They all played a part. Want to know what my favorite part was? Vic. He cracked me up. He lightened the story up enough to keep it from being bogged down in totally seriousness. He made every scene he was in a delight to read. What was your favorite part?

Nikki: I'm gonna have to second that and say Vic. Even though he wasn't the main character, he stole every scene he was in. He had a witty disposition and seemed to lighten the tension. I'm really hoping he'll get a book!

Lindsay: Oh! Me too!!!! That’s not to say that I didn’t like Zachary and Arielle, but while they were dealing with the serious stuff, Vic was there to irritate them and lighten the mood.

Nikki: Ok for the hard part, dislikes. I always hate this because I know how hard authors work on their books, but inevitably there's gonna be something readers don't like. Fortunately, there wasn't much not to like. I have a big issue with the lack of contractions. I always do. Also, I have to say that some things didn't seem to get answered and left me confused. Like just exactly how Matthias was turned into a vampire from a human when his father is an immortal.

Lindsay: I agree, I hate doing the issues part. I guess I didn’t realize that the Matthias question was never answered. My biggest issue (and it wasn’t huge, more of an observation) was that Arielle and Zachary fell in love really quickly. I get that they were destined to be together, but there wasn’t really any get-to-know-you time after they met. It just seemed like they went from meeting and Arielle not trusting him to not wanting to leave him and loving him in the blink of an eye.

Nikki: Yeah that was an issue for me too. I understand the insta-love happens a lot in paranormals with the mate thing. But we usually see them get to know each other for a few weeks or months before they declare their undying love. Here, Arielle and Zachary said it after mere days, half of which she was either scared and mistrusting of him or unconscious.

Lindsay: Exactly. I forgot about her being unconscious for half of the time early in their togetherness. But on the plus side…the author really knows how to write some evil characters. I truly loathed them. I was rooting for them to die a long and painful death.

Nikki: That is also true. I wanted some of them to be tortured along the lines of your harshest IA list!

Lindsay: OMG! Me too!!! I wanted to go all Dexter while I was going all Queen of Hearts on them! Heck, they even had me wanting to create a new list of ways to torture a fictional character!

Nikki: Oh boy! I can't even imagine what that could be... ;)

Lindsay: *manically twirling mustache*

Nikki: LOL. And on that note, it’s probably wise for us to wrap this up before Lindsay starts plotting torture.

I found this book to be quite enjoyable. It took me a few chapters to really get into the story but once I did, it was action packed with nonstop action throughout the second half. But over all, it moves along at a nice pace, never getting bogged down. It's an easy read.

I have to say that my most favorite character was a secondary character....Vic. He was just perfection. He was funny and serious and he provided a levity that was able to cut the tension during serious situations. Every scene he was in, he stole the show. I need more of him. He definitely deserves his own book.

Speaking of secondary characters, there were so many introduced that it could be easy to lose track of who they are and how they fit into everything. But...the good news is, each and every character plays a roll and serves a purpose. There were a few times that I found the family tree to be quite extensive and with so many people introduced, I had wished for a family tree to keep them straight.

One issue I had was the relationship between Arielle and Zach. While I found them to be a good pair, their relationship happened rather suddenly. One moment Arielle was unsure of him and the next she was saying she wanted to stay with him forever. It needed just a little more development for me, to show their growing connection.

This is definitely a great debut novel for the author. One thing I would caution the author on is the cover. It doesn't really scream adult or new adult paranormal romance. It has more of a graphic novel feel to it. So it's easy to bypass this book when browsing Goodreads or Amazon. Based on the cover alone, if someone hadn't recommended this to me, I probably wouldn't have given it a second glace.

Let me start by saying what I did really like in this book
1. Vic – Although he is a secondary who comes in during the middle of the book. I just love his personality and loyalty. He also scream Alpha.
2. Corbin – Another secondary character. Who is just compassionate.
3. Supporting characters are all good.
4. It’s a different type of Vampire book, you know where the go outside they will burn, well not in this book.
5. The family drama with Arielle and her mom. It was just right
6. The other woman drama, was good too. You know there is always one.

What I think needs improvement
1. Things happened so fast you really have to pay attention. It seems very rushed
2. Zach and Arielle fell in love very fast, were married, and pregnant even faster. There was no love story
3. Description of looks. I would like a better idea of how they look.
4. No details on the sex scene now I get it might what to be for new adults but something about her losing her virginity.
5. The killing (I won’t say who) but too fast
6. Main Male character not an Alpha, I mean he is a vampire he should be a an alpha.
7. The cover it’s not very welcoming I wouldn’t have brought it, I also think this should be labeled young adult not new adult.

I would recommend this book as a young adult.

I. Loved. This. Book. Definitely not your typical vampire read. Which made it refreshing & unique. The story draws you in from the very beginning. It's fast paced, loaded with action, and romantic. What I really loved was how the paranormal elements were derived from mythology. Now that, peaked my interest. There was never a dull moment in this story. I'm afraid if I were to go into this story & tell you what it's about, I'd give too much away. However, you'll be getting somewhat of a HEA. The author left room for another book. I think it'd be just as awesome. So if you're a paranormal lover of vampires & you're looking for something different & intriguing, pick this book up. You will not be disappointed.

I came accross this book on Goodreads and saw the cover and thought that it was going to be a children's book. However after seeing it a few times on here I read the synopsis and decided to request to review.

The Book itself was really good. It was well written and moved along really quickly. It was was entertaining and serious at the same time. The only reason that I gave it four stars was because of the cover. It makes the book look like it is a graphic novel and not something for an adult. If there was anything that I could suggest to this author it would be to "grow up" the cover. Other than that I found it a really good book and I can't wait to see if the author continues the story. I hope she does!

Arielle has known all of her life that she was different...locked away from the world by her father after her mother died, he has convinced everyone around her that she is crazy. But Arielle knows something has to give and she needs to get away. She gets her chance while exploring a tomb on an expedition with her family. She feels a pull to the other side of the tomb and abandons her brother to explore. She soon finds a door and finds something unexpected inside.

Trapped for 300 years, Zachary can't believe he is finally free. So much has changed since he was taken and now there is Arielle...he knows she is a game changer and he feels an unbelievable pull toward her. The more they are together, the more he knows she is it for him, his mate. But now that he has found her, there is danger at every turn threatening to pull them apart.

When everything comes to a head, can the love that Arielle and Zachary feel help them defeat their enemies?

I really loved this one. It is a well developed paranormal romance that will grip you from the very first paragraph and won't let you go until the end. There are a lot of characters but they are all essential to the story and it is written in a way that it is not confusing at all. There is a lot of action that keeps the story moving and the underlying love story between Arielle and Zachary is very well done.

My thoughts:

POV alternates between Arielle and Zachary
Quick hook or slow starter? 5 (I was hooked from the first chapter)
Character development: 4.5
Level of Romance between characters: 4
Passion/Heat level: 3 (as with most paranormal romances, there is no heat in this one. A few kisses and thats about it)
Angst/Heartbreak: 4 (there is a lot of drama and danger)
Cliffhanger?: Not really a cliffhanger per se but definitely wide open for another book.

Overall, I really liked it and I look forward to seeing where the author goes with this in the future.

This was a roller-coaster ride from start to finish. I was drawn in from page one. The whole book was full of action but the second half is nonstop action. I didn't want to put it down.

I received a copy in exchange of an honest review.

I liked very much the story and the beginning. The book is very well written, on a very compelling subject: love, soul mate and special bond, branching into the mysteries lying in blood and genetics, complex family connections, old families feud, all under a paranormal wrap which gives extra sparkles to the story. As much as the beginning is intriguing and urges you to read more, the developing story is lacking the zing that makes a book a page turner, despite the fast pace, good plot twists, exellent writing and good characters. Probably the main characters, Zachary and Arielle are not as well rendered as they could and their chemistry is lacking; their long confinement and young age can partially explain it for Arielle, but for Zachary, he says "a boy of 16 is a man, expect to be able to live by himself and provide". I would say he is a little bit too perfect and becomes a bit boring.
I'd say this book is an excellent exercise in style, entertaining for fans of paranormal and the author is definitely one to keep a look onto.

This is a fast paced book so hold on tight. Arielle leads a sheltered life but when she hears Zachary and discovers his tomb she is swept away to a life that she has never know. During the book she finds out things about her family and herself that she could never image. The action in this book never stops. When she is not discovering who she is she is fighting for her life. I loved that this book was a different spin from most vampire books.

All of the characters are well developed. There are many characters introduced throughout the book but it is easy to know who they are and what there role is in the clan. Zachary and Arielle's love is so endearing and true. The one and only thing I would have liked to see is a little bit more explanation of the clan and their history.

The epilogue was great and even though it does not end in a cliffhanger there seemed to be an option for more books. Hope so. This is a great paranormal YA book.

I completely enjoyed the book.
The pacing of the book is extremely fast. There is no down time at all. When one situation is resolved a new problem pops up immediately. Even though things moved quickly I never got lost or frustrated. The author did a great job with the back stories. I was able to keep up with each transition.
The characters are fantastic. You are introduced to tons of characters but they all have a strong purpose. You don't get bogged down with crazy names or their purpose. I love Ary. She is such a strong heroin. She challenges and supports when the occasion arises. I'm not sure I truly felt the mating bond but the romance was developed quickly.
My favorite side characters are Vic and Corbin. Vic made me laugh and his presence calmed me. Corbin is a whiney butt. I get why he's that way too. Hopefully we will see more of both.
Great read. Fast and entertaining roller-coaster ride. Hang on to your seats.

Blood of the Immortal is the first novel I've read by Ashley Jeffers. I'm always down for a good vampire story to see how different authors twist the lore. To say Arielle and Zachary's story starts off with a bang is an understatement. In fact, I found myself trying to catch my breath the entire saga. I say saga because, even though this is book one of a trilogy, it was so packed full of action and information that I found myself re-reading pages to make sure I fully understood what was taking place .

I won't go into detail and ruin the storyline, but I will say that after the first few chapters I was like, "What else could happen? So much already has!" I jumped the gun in thinking that however, because plenty more was about to take place. Ashley has created an intricate world and an intricate web of characters to play off one another. I'm not sure how she kept it all straight, but I'm glad she did.

I was the very lucky winner of this book giveaway on Goodreads!

First off I would have to say that this book falls more under the category of YA. With that being said, I really enjoyed it. It was simple to follow but had enough mystery involved to keep you guessing what would happen next. I enjoyed all the characters, even the ones that you love to hate, with good reason.
The only reason that this book didn't receive a 5 stars was I felt the lead female character and her love interest Zachery felt a bit rushed. That is the ONLY thing that I could honestly find any fault with.

I never give a description of the book because the author always does a fine job of that and I don't want to give away any spoilers.

If you love vampires and happy endings then this is the book for you!

Quickie Review:
This is a different type of vampire story. Forget all the traditional lore and the modern lore we're familiar with. These vampires don't sparkle and there's more to these mythical creatures than just blood sucking. If you're interested in paranormal romance give this book a shot.

In-Depth Review:

I was sent an ARC of this novel for an honest review and I have to say that I didn't love it. If I could I would give it 2.5 stars. The concept itself was interesting, especially with all the mystery surrounding the protagonist and her family, but everything moved so fast. I felt like a lot of the story could have been developed a little more. The two main characters fell for each other so fast in the beginning that I had a hard time buying into their love throughout the novel. Even the other characters agree! But I guess when people treat you poorly your whole life I guess you blindly fall in love with whoever treats moderately decent. Sometimes the narrative itself was a little choppy or the dialogue a little stiff, causing me to get out of the story.

The most redeemable part of the novel was the use of lore and mythology that kept me interested. I just had to know and if you're one of those types of people I guess you will plow through it too.

Has it really taken me this long?

I have like 20 pages left but I just don't care to finish this, unfortunately. I am not a fan of this style of storytelling. I did my best... and I don't like having any DNF's but... fuck it.

Done.

Just done. Sorry Arri.
