Kamachi Kazuma (鎌池和馬) is a Japanese-born light novel author and the original creator of the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, its spin-off manga series.
First of all, I would like to leave a slight hint of disappointment in this intro... Not because I found a bad volume, probably the third best volume so far for me (Losing only to OT22 and NT9), but ..... Kamachii Kazuma so far , at least for me, in all arcs that had more than one volume, the ending always the best part along with the final volume itself, which would normally be the best part of the arc. Examples are Daihasei Arc, Academic City Invasion, England Arc, 3rd World War and Ichihanaran Arc. Unfortunately arc Othinus can't be part of this, after all, NT9 was way better than NT10, but that's ok, let's talk about volume soon, no spoilers, of course
Firstly.... Touma was so CHAD on this volume! I find it interesting how the author almost never makes Touma stronger out of nowhere with his veins pulsing or his hair changing color (or even him losing his hair after training for 3 years). Even though it's a lie from a pessimistic fruit, he's just a high school kid, not a protagonist of a shounen battle manga. Well, of course, the script won't always create magnificent circumstances for Touma to win and some will actually fall into script's conveniences, but overall it's done well
After the eternal suffering of Kamijou Touma, it would be very strange if he remained the same person and Kamachii realized this ..... Index so far it has not been a work that forgets its script so easily, but would explore the terms as much as possible before preceded and keywords removed, just to give a big BOOM when the time comes
Talking about Kamijou Touma, I thought his build so far was beautiful, almost turning into a selfish degenerate, but at least this would happen to him at least once, wouldn't it? His construction of an ideal hero who will always save everything in the end, almost like a saint, or rather Jesus and his great deeds that made him accumulate disciples who followed him steadfastly, but in fact, he carries a lot more weight than we thought, and the more luggage you carry, the more it will hurt when you fall, just like Kamijou Touma
The script here to play a lot with this selfishness of Touma, sometimes with comic parts and others, with the great physical and emotional constraints of each round. Talking about these emotional addicts, how about we discuss a little about the philosophies addressed here? Here, the system of justice, morals and ethics are together and the balance that the script makes for this is very interesting. There are several opinions, hypotheses and judgments. Fortunately, all these views are plausible and the author does not create a distorted environment of justice. It's simply a better understanding of the situation. Of course, because we have more affinity with the protagonist and with what he went through, we can continue with his selfish goals, but with so many other views, a freer path is for us to understand exactly the ethics and morals
Kamijou Touma has changed, Othinus has also changed, as has their relationship.
Initially it was a little uncomfortable for me to see the relationship between two enemies so far getting so close, but NT9 allowed this connection on NT10, so there's really no problem with that. Of course, the text so far really highlighted the best part of the volume, but it does have its problems, especially with the fast storytelling... In NT9 it was a bit similar, but at least in the previous volume the fast storytelling was strong and I saw with a great burden for the future... NT10 does the same, but ends up leaving some rotten fruit while the tree in his narrative grew. In summary, some things that don't resemble discrepancies, but rather lack of detail, seem to go weird in the volume..... Normally you would see Kamachii write lots of detailed scenes, without skipping notions or the journey of some characters, what here he does sometimes. Well, it still makes sense for the title system based on "Rounds", which was a nice insight from the author, but I just felt that Index lost some of its descriptive essence here.
We also have some narrative exchanges here and there, very similar to the arc of the 3rd world war, more specifically OT22, which varied between the efforts and ideals of humanity and incorporated them into our protagonist. Here it is very similar, mainly the mirror philosophy, also used in OT22, but with some important differences here... In short, while the argument in OT22 served to protect humanity, in NT10 it is something much more selfish, which protects a God and the selfishness of a human. Wow, this suits the volume a lot in my opinion!
Finally, the final route was insane, and seeing that Kamachii saved Kamijou Touma's impactful phrase for that moment really hit me hard, making me shiver... The epilogue was very interesting too. I honestly love arc endings that open holes for a new enemy or mystery, and Index constantly does this in a very creative way.
EXTRA NOTE: Best afterword so far... Explained very well some things and complaints of mine, which are still well founded, but now a little distorted. It was very informative and worth it, especially in the part where Kamachii announces without any remorse that he would have liked to put Othinus' outfit on a loli......... This man scares me a little, I hope what happened to the author of samurai x don't repeat yourself.... Nhé, just kidding, it was just an ad by Kamachii that caught me in a comical way
Very interesting concept in this one and executed to perfection. These past two volumes have been a sort of fond reminiscence/culmination of what Toaru has done as a series overall. The action was great as it always is in this series but the character writing was again exceptional.
Absolutely blown away with how the "antagonist" has been written to this point.
Minor spoilers for this last comment but it must be mentioned. One of my top 5 moments in the series so far with Mikoto's discussion about human agency. Just so well done and a great character moment so unbelievably fire thats why she's the GOAT.
This volume was a bossrush and an exciting conclusion to the GREMLIN arc. Seeing how shattered Touma's self-worth is after NT9 is hard hitting, and the unique ways that Touma had to deal with all of these situations was fun to read.
Simply amazing, the last person uaable to forgive the villain is the villain herself. That suffices as an ending to a long string of fighting against the world's killing intent. The banter between Touma and Othinus was fun to read tbh
