The Dragonfate Games #6

Alpha Dragon's Bear

Rate this book
What if your fated mate was your mortal enemy?

Rorik the polar bear shifter has one infiltrate the dragon’s lair and kill the vile beasts that ravaged his home years ago. Despite being an omega, he’s the strongest fighter in his secluded clan, and never backs down from a fight. He’s determined to pick off the dragons one at a time, starting with the current Saffron.

When Rorik arrives on the tropical island, he’s confused… and sweaty. Saffron isn’t the murderer he expected. He’s the warm, sweet, sunny—and he smells damn good, too. Saffron is all too eager to snuggle up to Rorik, and unfortunately, Rorik enjoys the snuggling.

But orders are orders. Rorik must obey. And when he finally sinks his fangs into a dragon’s throat, his world changes forever.

Alpha Dragon’s Bear is a fun, sweet mpreg novel featuring a sunny alpha dragon, a grumpy polar bear, and spicy scenes. Reading the series in order is recommended. No cheating, and fluffy HEA guaranteed!

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

It had its good moments but I must admit this felt pretty forgettable. I’m just waiting for Poppy and Viol’s story, really. I was more invested in the parts about those two guys than I was the actual MCs.

One part of me really loves that this author writes plus size characters, but another part of me is sometimes mildly triggered by the way they’re described because of my own issues. Bit of a tricky situation for me, but obviously not the author’s fault. Mostly it’s really nice tho, and clearly much-needed rep.

These books are fun and low angst, but I’m in the mood for more serious books with more angst lately, so maybe it would’ve worked better for me another time.

“You know, you’re swearing a lot for a babysitter,” I pointed out. “Minty’s too young to remember,” Viol dismissed. His face brightened when he tickled the top of the fluffy dragonet’s head. “Isn’t that right, cutie?” “Fack!” Mint exclaimed. The kitchen fell dead silent. Viol and I stared at each other. In a low voice, he warned, “If you tell anyone where he learned that word, I’ll skin you.”

The bear was silent as he stared. Two small black eyes were focused on me, standing out like an adorable pair of buttons on a huge patch of white. He was really, really cute.

Mesmerized, my gaze drifted lower. The first thing I noticed was Rorik’s big belly. It looked so soft, especially with the dusting of pale hair. I wanted to bury my face in it. Rorik was fat, but clearly fit. Powerful biceps lurked beneath the flab of his arms, and his hairy thighs were as thick as tree trunks. He looked strong enough to lift the couch with one hand. In summary, he was really fucking hot.

“Did you just call me the light of your life?” I chuckled wetly. “That’s gay, dude.”

I enjoyed the unique beginning of this book and maybe cried a little. Rorik was in such a shitty cult thing and even though my experience in a high demand situation was not as extreme (thou shalt not kill was still a thing), I related to his moments of cognitive dissonance when confronted with things that contradicted what he’d be taught. I thought the major conflict point resolved too quickly. However, I thought the internal monologue for Rorik was well done. Saffron was a freaking ray of anxious sunshine and a good choice for Rorik’s counterpoint. I wanted to bundle both of them up with snuggles. I also liked the body positivity and that Rorik was allowed to be fat and hot at the same time. A lot of the book felt like a build up for Poppy’s story, which, let’s be honest, a lot of the series has been that, and I’m looking forward to his book.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: cult programming, references to SA of other characters, violence and attempted murder, blood, grief, mention of avalanche and fire, stalking by side character, fatphobia (internalized and from side character), discussion of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse

At this stage I’m reading this series for Poppy’s story; and while this is not that story there were some new tangents (which included Poppy) which makes for a slightly meatier story albeit still mostly fluff and garish shirts.

When I first read the synopsis of this book i was honestly worried about how It would fit in this series but It did fantastically. They were super cute and I really likes Rorik's character and his story was very well made. The author did a Great job with the ice cult aspects.

And I absolutely adore how It connected with Poppy and Viol, My absolute faves since day one and I'm now even more execited for their book. Hawke Oakley in now My icon because he is totally fulfilling my needs with this two. He is even writing thier story very similarly to scenarios I had imagined

This might be the best of the series. We get a lot more than just the Games this time and I really liked the additional plot and the change from the rest of the series, which was starting to feel almost boring. I cannot wait for Poppy and Viol, especially cuz I wanna know what happened way back when! I do feel like the intro of the Tundra Clan is also a set up for a spin off series because obviously the other Arctic omegas need some love and care after their experiences!!

A MM omegaverse romance with Dragon Shifter x Polar Bear shifter! That's quite the combo 😁.
I guess this series has hooked me in, with how this is the 3rd book here that I read lol. I did skip few parts to get to action but as I spent my 4hrs on this & have read it to end, Imma add this to read pile! Saffron & Rorik were sweet.

Rorik is a BIG Polar Bear omega sent to assassinate dragons. What better than to do it in dragonfate games, all dragons are RIGHT there. He's lived a very sheltered life. I was a few para in—& I KNEW he's in a f'ing cult! R's broody but melts for kids, is caring, & quite blunt.

Saffron is the alpha Dragon, the one whose been so excited to find his fated mate. But what if his exuberance is too much to handle for him? A movie lover, he's sweet, fun, patient & loved that growly side! It's fun to see all the brothers bonds.

With the supposed revenge assassin angle, this book did something different from the formulaic nature of the games & that was fun! It's still low angst & I liked tho even with action, hurts & misses, how S broke R's walls 🥰. The insecurities 🥺, size difference 🥵 (especially as S is smaller as human!), Grumpy/Sunshine. It's hot & the M-preg is sweet as ever.

We got so much extra lore for Viol & Poppy. Omfg, I did not expect that past connection! I'm so excited for their book. Can't believe we're onto the final book now!

I was very confused by this trajectory of the this plot. I liked the book overall….
Contains some subtle spoils. I liked the mcs character development, and the overall story, however I felt like the plot was a little inconsistent.

I’m a huge sucker for abused mc being comforted and welcomed into a found family situation, but I felt like there needed to be more insight into Roriks past. Maybe we will get more in the next book, which I’m very much looking forward to. This book also contained pretty dark themes ( physical abuse/emotional abuse of both children and adults), but just skimmed over them somehow to maintain the overall cozy vibe? Alittle emotionally confusing.

I really thought I have my issues with the twins but it was just Aurums story I didn’t like all too much. Saffron was fun again and I really enjoyed this.

I’m just really bothered someone was attacked and injured in this. Despite the books dealing with some serious topics, I see them as a cozy wholesome read and that really ruined that aspect for me. Some minor characters beefing is one thing but that was too much for my taste. I didn’t really like the spice in this book either but wasn’t here for it in the first place so it’s whatever.

I really like the cult themes and how we got more information on Poppy when it comes to that. The movie hoard is amazing and it’s one I can get behind, those books are just written fun, they’re incredibly enjoyable to read.

Definitely a different vibe than the previous books, but it worked! I just wished we could’ve seen his friends that he left behind at the end…

Anyways, the foreshadowing for the last book is killing me.

I’m gonna miss this series!

The way I am a sucker for a Hawke Oakley book 😍😍 Always so perfectly wholesome and excellent!! This series is such a comfort read, predictable but in the best way.

Saffron is beyond excited that it’s finally his season on the Dragonfate games, he has been wanting to find his mate for so long.

However, the mate in question Rorik, has been sent to the dragon island for other reasons..

But nothing can keep the fated mates apart! Rorik is so sweet and cute and like Saffron, I just wanted to squeeze his sweet little face and protect him!

This book was cute and pretty fluffy. I don't know what it is about this series, but it draws me in while being simultaneously unsatisfying. I will say that I am PUMPED for Viol's story though!!

WOW!!! Once again Hawke Oakley has managed to write a compelling and exciting volume in the dragonfate games series. It's a great romance, but to my mind, a thorough reading of the story delivers more. And it does!
For starters, the main characters are great once again. Saffron Chromatimaeus is one of the youngest and most spontaneous and affectionate dragons, who in this season of the Dragonfate Games goes in search of a mate. Rorik is a polar bear changer and is a bit more closed and down-to-earth. This makes for a strong dynamic between the two characters, both literally and figuratively. In doing so, the author has outdone himself once again.
The dragon has an ambiguous meaning in symbolism, and ingenious use is made of this in the story. On the one hand, it represents wealth, prosperity, protection, destiny, and on the other hand, it refers to chaos, destruction and unconscious forces. With these various references, two storylines are given added tension, the first of which is “Alpha Dragon's Bear” and the second is going to come to a denouement in the final part of the series. The irony in this at times is masterful!
And then Rorik. As a polar bear, I experienced him as a symbol of courage, endurance, strength and intuition. In his development, spiritual discernment goes a long way. As a result, he has a special place among the omegas on Chromatimaeus Island. He shows how important it is not to assume all information as if it were the truth. What matters is always to be open yourself to the experience and perception of the encounter with the other.
Furthermore, one motif in the series that recurs with regularity is the plush dragon. It is more than a humorous element. To my mind, it is a reference to affection, security, nostalgia and emotional well-being. The latter meaning in particular gives this cuddly toy an additional meaning in relation to someone making sure the plush dragon shows up where it is needed.
Furthermore, this part of the series is distinguished by an ethical theme. Something terrible happens that creates a twist that was not addressed in the earlier volumes. This makes it possible to analyze this story from an ethical perspective as well. For me, it shows that it is important to follow your own intuition and feelings above all.
And so “Alpha Dragon's Bear” becomes more than a great romance. It is a book with great characters that make for an exciting story. The slight irony with which the author plays with the symbolism of dragons is wonderful. With lyrical precision, the author manages to put playful motifs into the story that make one curious about the seventh volume of the series.

So, I have to admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Rorik at first. Something about his character gave off reality-TV Amish vibes, and not in a good way—I was kind of cringing through his intro.

That said, the found family warmth on this lovely dragon island is still going strong. It was such a comfort to see the older couples again and the dragonets being their chaotic little selves. That part of the world still hits home for me.

Even though Saffron’s the lead in this one, I found myself paying a lot of attention to his twin, Aurum. His journey into becoming a doting dad and how he supports Saffron was just really sweet to read. Plus, his exaggerated hatred for what’s basically a Frozen knockoff cracked me up. I genuinely thought that the movie Ice Princess was the literal 2005 movie Ice Princess. Haven't watched it but heard of it, and I didn't understand why the ferret twins were loving it cuz that isn't for toddlers. Took such a long time to realize it was just this book's version of Frozen.

Now, about Viol’s book not coming out until April 2026?

If I’m being fair, this was about a 3-star read for me—nothing groundbreaking, but still a cozy return to a world I like spending time in. But I'm also invested in this series for years so +1 star!

I have to admit that I wasn't sure I'd like this series when I first started it - it was such a strange and silly premise! But I have to admit that I have enjoyed this series.

This book differs from the others, setting up our love interest as a would-be assassin who has been conditioned by his cult-leader alphas as a subservient omega. Rorik, a polar bear shifter, eventually makes it to the island for the games and finds his world flipped upside down as everything he's been led to believe is challenged. Saffron, for his part, is generally understanding of Rorik and does his best to ease him into the 'real world' and show him that he is valued and treasured, not only as his mate, but as a person.

The most jarring thing from this book is the sideplot with Poppy and Viol, which has me eager to read their story. In fact, I almost feel that this derails a lot of the story for me as it got to the point that I grew more invested in finding out about their connection, history, and future pairing more than Rorik and Saffron.

Overall, I give the story a 4 out of 5. It was a fun read featuring the characters I've grown to like as well as the quirkiness of the reality show games theme.

Alpha Dragon’s Bear is such a delightful mix of heat, sweetness, and surprising heart. Rorik is everything you’d want in a grumpy polar bear shifter: tough, loyal, and weighed down by duty. His mission to destroy the dragons sets up the perfect enemies-to-lovers tension, but what really makes the story shine is how quickly that hard exterior begins to melt in the face of Saffron’s warmth. Saffron is the kind of sunshine alpha who lights up every page, all sweetness and snuggles, which makes his pairing with Rorik feel both charmingly unlikely and completely inevitable.

The tropical setting adds a playful contrast to Rorik’s icy origins, and the push-pull between their instincts and their fated bond kept me hooked. The writing balances action with tenderness, giving just the right amount of angst before diving into the fluffy HEA. I especially loved how the mate bond isn’t just about chemistry—it becomes a healing force for both of them, reshaping years of pain and distrust into something stronger.

This story is pure comfort read joy: a sunny alpha, a grumpy bear, and plenty of spicy moments that will leave you smiling. If you’re looking for a feel-good shifter romance with heart, Alpha Dragon’s Bear delivers beautifully.

Wild and Cute

This was a big change from the usual plot of the other books and I was totally here for it. We’re getting down to the end of the series and Viol and his secrets are starting to be revealed! I really enjoyed Rorik and his entire story. It started out so sad for him how confused and alone he felt. But once he was with Saffron and started to see the error of how he was taught about Omegas, Alphas and Dragons, he was so sweet and open to trying new things!

I’m so excited that the next book is finally Viol’s. I’m so ready to find out the details of his and Poppy’s story and to see all the brothers finally have their HEAs.

A great addition!

I never expected this cheesy series about a game show would bring so much comfort. I’m happy to see Saffron’s HFN, and I loved how much he adored his partner for being plus size. The true bear-twink alliance we needed. But even more, I LOVE an innocent assassin storyline, and seeing this tough guy receive love for the first time in his life was so good.

Now.

PLEASE PLEASE WE NEED VIOL’S BOOK. I’VE BEEN CRAVING IT SINCE BOOK ONE. PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME WAIT TILL 2026. 😭

I enjoy this so much with the totally unexpected plot for Saffron book 💕

And thus we finally get to know about Viol past and how he kinda interrelated with Poppy. The fact he has save Poppy before from his twisted Clan yet their book will be the last from the series is mind-blowing. Since they are the first to have actual interaction… the angst is totally building from the series which make it me really anticipating their book ✨

Can’t wait for their book to finally come out and get to finally see their relationship blossom and all their interactions ✨

4.5 ⭐

I adore this series, every book in it has been fun and cute, with this book being no exception.

I loved the characters and my heart hurt for my polar boy but i'm so happy he got to learn about the world outside his community and he got to escape and have his happily ever after.

It was super cute and still low angst even with some slightly more angsty themes. And of course we got our adorable mating and mpreg!

Can't wait to read the next book in this series, i've loved them all so much ❤️
