An Amazon best-selling and award-winning author, Immy writes romantic apocalypse and dystopian stories. Her books are a shade too dark to be light, and a tinge too light to be dark. They'll make you cry and worry and wonder, but there's always a layer of hope and laughter and sexy times to brighten it all.

In addition to writing, Immy loves her children, her husband, books about steam and darkness, flowers (even if she accidentally shmurgles half of them), coffee, DIY projects, trying new things, learning new facts, sunshine, guacamole, and sticky toffee pudding.

Great, quick read…but

Just finished writing my review and the whole thing deleted. Thanks, Amazon. Ugh.

I normally read these books before they’re released (as ARCs), but somehow missed this until yesterday. Bummer! Been waiting on Imogen’s latest release and finally did a search for it, only to find I’d preordered it and it’s been sitting on my Kindle (imagine my happy dance), buried beneath a bunch of samples I need to delete because most didn’t make the cut.

That brings me to this book. I’ve been an avid fan of this series since the first book, “Broken,” and while this latest addition is novella length (took me less than two hours to finish), sadly it doesn’t carry the emotional weight of the Frankie and Yorke books. That’s NOT to say it doesn’t deserve a 5-star rating…let me explain, without spoilers.

I read, or at least try to read, a ton of books. I don’t normally review them on Amazon unless specifically asked to do so if I can’t in good conscience give them a 4 or 5. I have the utmost respect for anyone who manages to complete and publish a book, so just because it’s not to my taste I’m not going to knock it with a low rating. And if it the quality is so bad I can’t get past the sample, I don’t read it.

As excited as I was to read “Evolved,” even without my favorite book couple (seriously, I appreciate expanding the world of this series and meeting other characters, so that wasn’t an issue), it took me awhile to grasp what my problem was with this particular book. And I finally realized it’s the author’s fault for setting the bar so high (that’s a compliment lol) with the earlier books that I just didn’t connect to the characters in this one. Much.

Let me explain, without spoilers. “Broken,” the first book in the series, was short, probably about this length (maybe a bit longer, or feels like it). But that book — wow, emotional punch after punch, with hope weaved in perfectly, strength; if you didn’t cry when Jimmy died or when Frankie’s best friend got sick, you’re a robot. Yet in this book, I probably liked Knox best, didn’t care much one way or the other about Tilly, and was somehow annoyed by grandma VP. Had any of the characters died, I could’ve easily imagined a future for the others and shrugged their deaths off. They just didn’t, I don’t know, matter to me. I felt no connection. I didn’t care about them. And I know Imogen can do connection in a short book, because she did so in Broken and with side characters in other books.

That’s not to say this book doesn’t deserve 5 stars. If any other writer had published it, I doubt I’d struggle with this. I might not have as eagerly anticipated the next book in the series (which I still totally do, because obviously every reader has books in each series they love and others that aren’t their favorite). But I’d still think it was an entertaining, worthwhile read and keep an eye out for the next book.

At the end of the novel, the author stated that she wrote this book very fast, which is fine…I appreciate getting books quicker, even with my spacey memory making me miss the release. But I think that might’ve been why the characters were less developed and some obvious mistakes went unnoticed (like stating FDR was president during WWI, and missed words, using “silencer” instead of “suppressor” — things a good editor might’ve picked up).

Overall though, I still definitely recommend this book and the entire series. This could be read as a standalone, though I’d read the others in this series first to really feel the emotional weight, struggles, world building, love, and just awesome writing and storytelling. I did enjoy learning more about what’s going on in other parts of the world.

Can’t wait for the next book in the series! Until then, I’ll be searching for another good post-apocalyptic romance that is strong on character development without gratuitous sex for erotica’s sake. If you have any recommendations please drop a line.

Thanks for another great read, Immy!

Ottilie's story was a quick read that added a lot of background to what happened inside the American government after the pandemic wiped out 99.9% of the population.

It was a nice break from the Frankie/Yorke drama, but now I'm ready for more of their story to see them interact with the new POTUS.

2.5 stars.

I like Knox…. But this book was only 100 pages which makes it hard to connect to the characters.

I didn’t fully understand all the motives, but I’m looking forward to watching their stories unfold in the next few books.
