My Turn

Rate this book
The thing about obsession is that it can come out of nowhere. One day, you're a fourteen-year-old freshman focused on football. Then, your brother brings a girl home. Not just any girl. Alana Monroe. That was all it took to seal my fate. And hers.

It's been twelve years and none of that fatal attraction has left me. It's grown, spread throughout my body like a cancer. But I can't have her yet. Even though Jake is gone, when she looks at my face, she can't help but see him. Being identical was a curse I'd been born with and there was no escaping it. I couldn't let her go, though. I'd never let her go.

It was bound to come to this. Fighting it was pointless, so I was gonna play with her a little. Maybe I'd let myself break her. It was time to introduce her to someone else, the monster who had been tracking her every move for so long. I'd rip my brother's memory from her so that she could be free. When she realized who her savior was underneath the mask, she'd no longer see him. She'd see me.

It was my turn.

✨ARC Review✨

"Jesus, you can howl. I'm gonna call you fucking Balto." 💀😂

God damn, this book had me in a CHOKEHOLD. 👀
Check your triggers before you jump in. I shouldn’t have to say this but FFS, just do it. It’s DARK.

First of all, amazingly spicy, we love an unhinged MMC who is obsessed. 🥵
Second of all, the plot? This isn’t straight up smut, it’s smut with a storyline! Actually loved the plot in this. Was just shock after shock, and things I didn’t expect to see coming.

Loved the two different endings. I of course read both. The first had me like 🥺 because I mean, no HEA and that shit was fucking sad. Second ending? With a HEA? Chefs kiss. 🫶🏻

I demolished this in under 24 hours. Please tell me there’s a book two because after the epilogue I NEED one. 😭🖤

PS- leant that some kinks just aren’t for me. 💀😂

2.5 rounded up because I thought I’d want to DNF and was intrigued enough by some twists to stay.

The length and choose your own ending intrigued me and gave me hope this would be more unique than most dark obsessive stalker romance.

Unfortunately it missed that mark and fell into the pattern of a lot of dark romance. Crazy kink moments and crazy bad guy “doing it to protect his love” moments for the shock factor that are rather unnecessary in my opinion. The tattoo, the clamps, the c*m in drinks etc that are all never mentioned again. What purpose did those scenes serve besides shock value?

We don’t have much characterization for the MMC but obsessive, strong personal moral code of delusion, and also golden retriever-esque “real” persona. And for the FMC we have the NLOG mentions, classic tragic life, longing for more from sex that no man has ever given her, and completely oblivious to MMCs intentions.

I’ve read this story 100 times and while there were attempts to give this depth and stand out traits, for me, it fell short. This may be exactly what you’re looking for! For me, this was not my cup of tea.

Writing was middle of the road. A stupid stupid pet peeve: Jayson and Jaykob shortened to Jayce and Jake. It’s so weird to me that despite the apparent Y obsession to not shorten Jaykob to Jayk. Hahaha

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book had me hooked and it's perfect for spooky season! But check the TW if you need to, although if you can handle them, my dark romance fans will enjoy this one!

I love how unhinged Jayce was and also how unapologetic he was about it all! I'd take his justifications for his actions any day and SWOON. The way he's loved Alana for years despite her being with his twin brother had me rooting for them. There's a perfect amount of spice and plot and the story was written so well and had me devouring it.

I also love how's there 2 alternate endings - I've never seen an author do this but I loved it! There's one for if you want a HEA and one if you don't. I read both and honestly I typically love a HEA, but the ending without one felt so much more fitting.

What to expect:
- Touch her and die
- Friends to lovers
- Masked stalker
- Serial Unaliver (but only for those he loves)
- Knife play, blood play, bondage
- Noncon, dubcon, forced O, somno

Thank you so much to Madilyn DeRose for letting me read and review an ARC of this book! It releases October 25th and needs to be on your TBR if these tropes are your thing!

I honestly really wanted to like this book and I’m going to give credit where it’s due, though I felt quite sad at the ending even the No HEA, it just felt very underwhelming.

Jayce for one was definitely obsessed with Alana and I did like it, but then the whole book I was questioning why exactly did he feel like this for Alana? I didn’t really sense much chemistry between the characters as it just felt like sex?

His obsession had a lot of shock factor moments, like the bottle, or the fertiliser? I did find it interesting that he was a serial killer, but it didn’t make sense that none of it fell back on him? Like he had no consequence for his actions? It also icked me when he was saying all the other girls he slept with before were practice for Alana, like he didn’t need to bring down other woman to uplift her, it just felt toxic. Alongside him killing her brother was horrible, and I don’t understand why he killed him or any of the other guys, it just reeked with how insecure and uncaring he was of his murders. Like I said felt very shock factor with no substance.

I also didn’t like the fact he had this weird relationship with his niece and she was totally fine with him killing her dad? Like wouldn’t she have been mad that he killed her dad, even if he was a bad person or what not, he took that away from her because of his own selfish wants? It just felt like we were meant to like Jayce and see him as a better person cause he was taking care of his niece which only made me not like him more. His character was very Alana based which I get some people would like, me I liked his craziness at first but then things started to not make sense and only felt like it was added as a shock factor.

Then there is Alana, who has a traumatic backstory and a cardboard personality, half the time she’s not even thinking. She wasn’t feisty or paranoid or feeling anything even though she had a stalker after her? It was just very bland from her side, and I don’t even feel like she loved Jayce, he’s all she’s known for years so she just settled with that? Like being his brother’s fiancé and only wanting him after he’s dead then admitting you always had feelings, it wasn’t making any sense with any of her actions. The fact she barely reacted when her brother died and didn’t try and leave his ass boggles my mind even more, like she was totally fine with him killing a police officer even though she’s alive? The character had no moral balance and I get because they are meant to be dark romance characters, but we don’t even get to see her in denial or accepting the darkness more like it’s just very rushed and not thought out.

Overall I managed to finish the book, and I wanted to really like it, there were parts that I enjoyed which was Jayce’s more obsessive monologue’s as we got to see more into his thoughts. If your into stalker romances, this might be for you, I would say Jayce is very much a yandere, but his character doesn’t add up at times and can be very shock factor based at times.

It does have some dark stuff in the book, so do be warned before reading it.

A true ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me! It took me a couple days to read, but that is because I am forced to work, otherwise this would have been devoured within a day it is so good!

Spice be spicing for sure 🌶🌶🌶🌶.5.

Jayce, Jayce, Jayce. I mean...unhinged can't even describe him. His way of justifying his actions to himself is gold! Did he murder someone for just touching her? Sure, but what else was he supposed to do? Just let the guy think it was okay to touch what is his, even if it was just on the arm? No, he isn't obsessed, he is just determined.

I can't tell you how many times I was laughing at how he was normalizing all his actions, and saying that Alana would understand and appreciate his efforts. She did eventually started eating the Hershey kisses that he left, just took a consistent amount of time leaving them, and when she did he was like a happy puppy.

One thing I liked is that he wasn't some super millionaire, but he was comfortable due to having a normal job that he needed to keep up with, in between of stalking Alana of course. He was tech savvy, and brilliant enough to create inventions, which I would say can be on par with other stalker books.

I also really liked that Alana was a high school teacher who didn't want kids (and it might simply be because I can relate). She very much is a down to earth FMC and does her best to keep sane while being stalked by an unknown, crazy masked man.

My favorite part? Two potential endings. One is an HEA, and one is not. I read both, and I can say, that while it is always nice to have an HEA....the sad one I felt fit the story more. I may be completely in the minority here, and I am so happy that it was offered two potential endings, because it gave the reader the choice on how they like to see their characters continue. It is like a choose your own adventure style in a book.

I can't not say how much I am grateful to have gotten an ARC for this book to read, and a great choice to read during the spooky season.

Tropes:
☑️ Touch her and 💀 (actually just look at her and your life is at risk)
☑️ Betrayal
☑️ Dual POV’s (first person)
☑️ Friends-to-Lovers (but not in a sweet way...)
☑️ Stalker
☑️ Masked MMC
☑️ Serial Unaliver (just for her though)

I could warn. you of all the potential şmüt involved kink play, but really it is the first page of triggers, so you know what you are going to be getting into.

Wow oh wow, this book was just wow! First of all I did not expect so much to happen! The author does give two ending, one is HEA the other is not. But man either one will give you sadness in awhile. I couldn't put this book down. I loved it so much. I've read a few stalker books and this one is 100% different and I love it!! There suspense, danger, lies, betrayal, love, and stalking with a mask *wink wink* ugh to me this was like Jekyll and Hyde but not so different. But it keeps you on your toes!! And clearly I think there's going to be another book, if there is I really want to read it!!!

Dark stalker romance? Yes please!

Not only was this book dark but it was actually really funny. The MMC is disturbed but also incredibly likable… the way he justifies his actions won me over. Is there possibly something wrong with me for liking a stalker /murderer? Nah .

I absolutely devoured this book. The author is new to me and now I must read everything she had written!

One thing I really likes was the alternative ending… without spoiling anything you are given a choice to which ending you want to read so you can totally skip the HEA but obviously I read both 🤣

Overall 10/10 recommend ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

2.5/5 ⭐️

This is a very trigger heavy story so please check triggers before reading. I received an ARC copy from BookSirens and this is all my honest opinion, yours might be different than mine, but this is how I felt.

When I started this book I liked it. The premise had a lot of opportunity. Grieving FMC (Alana) and the twin brother’s (Jayce) been in love with her since teenagers? Cool. She won’t go to him or give in to the attraction because he reminds her too much of her ex-fiancé? Fine. He makes himself known as another person who is stalking her to separate himself from his brother? Perfect, let’s get into the dark romance.

It was good up until 75-85% and then Jayce killed someone that I didn’t think was exactly necessary and I couldn’t valid his means of “protecting her” when it would end up hurting her more once she found out. Then I felt like it got more and more deranged as it got to the end and the less I liked Jayce’s character and was frustrated with Alana’s. I read both endings, the normal ending was wild with how that progressed with the niece and Jaycee, the HEA ending was good, it even made me laugh.

This book had so much potential and it was going so good of fulfilling that potential until that last 20-15% and it just made me very frustrated.

My Turn is one of my favorite gothic romance reads this year. It's full of darkness, obsession and twisted motivation. Alana's fiancé past away and she has been coping and coming to terms with it for the past year. Her best friend Jayce, who happens to be her dead fiancé's twin brother has been a huge support. He's caring and loyal and just what she needs to get through this tragedy. What she doesn't know is that Jayce had been absolutely obsessed with her since high school. Since his subtle advances are not getting him anywhere, he decides to let his crazy off the leash in order to push Alana into his arms. There is no boundary Jayce will not cross and I was there for it. He is by far my new favorite masked man and can stalk me any day. 😂J/k. Or am I... 😘
One of my favorite things about the book is the surprise ending. You are given the opportunity to choose your ending, HEA or not. Being a HEA gal, I thought that would be my go to, but I love both endings equally. They just work.
If you are a fan of dark, dark romance and exotic horror, add My Turn to your tbr.

Thank you Madilyn DeRose for sending me an advance copy of My Turn. I thoroughly enjoyed it and being a part of your ARC team.

This story was an intense, unpredictable ride, and I loved every moment of it! The twists and turns kept me hooked. At first, I thought Jayce was just a bit unsteady, but soon realized he’s truly, deeply unhinged—and I couldn’t get enough! His actions completely shocked me, but every one of them was for Alana. With an ending like that, I’m seriously hoping for a sequel!

Holy hell. Jayce 🔥.
They're both crazy, and I loved it.
I loved how Jayce truly (creepily?) loved Alana. He’d do absolutely anything for her.
I wanted to hate him, but it was impossible. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but he’s adorable. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is absolutely toxic and crazy, but... ugh. I love him. I probably need to see a shrink. 😅

Alana is just as crazy for loving him back after she found out what he did. And boy, did he do a lot. 🤯
But hey, he was so cuuute with Alicia, that has to count for something right? 😅

100% recommend.
But my question is:
Where is Ben’s cat?
I need to know.

It had potential but honestly, it kind of just fell flat at the end. The reveal of Jayce being Erebus was anticlimactic and overall every chapter was the same, just swap out the person Jayce was unaliving for being a threat to him and Alana. The characters had very little depth or growth throughout the book.

This story was really engaging, and I was into it most of the time. There was 1 particular thing that happened (twice, really) that made me not love the H or the story after that. But up to that point, and had it not been there, this might have been my first 5 star of the year. The tropes and kinks were right up my alley, and the writing and storytelling were great, and I'd read more by this author, as well as rec it if darks reads are your thing.

Alana suffers from an acute case of dumb bitchitis, which clearly infected me because there's no other reason for me to have not DNF this all the times I considered it.

My Turn has a choose-your-own-ending option: one with a HEA and one without. The only reason I finished this was to see what happened to Jayce. I would accept 1 of 2 outcomes for this murdering rapist.

I don't consider this dark romance; just dark. This is a straight horror novel. There's no morally grey. No person in their right mind could ever like Jayce, including readers. This character had a straight coal black heart and moral code.

I was excited to start this and was actually big mad I had to stop reading and go to work. Reading the synopsis didn’t fully prepare me for Jayce and I’m so happy about that. I knew it would be more pitch black than some dark romance end up being and so I buckled in.

Y’all. 😮‍💨 Jayce Weste? Boy is insane. Like actually psychotic. But like *tucks hair* he’s perfect? Fictionally he’s perfect and I was rooting for him. He has wanted Alana basically his entire life and after his twin passes he finally has a chance to have her. He lets her mourn and then, does he confess? Maybe ask her on a date? No! Why would he do that when he can continue to stalk her like he has for fourteen years!

He breaks into her house, he manipulates her, he makes her dependent on him in ways she never thought possible. And he does it all under the guise of being the masked man who breaks into her house and toys with her. And not her dead fiancés twin brother and her best friend. 🙃

There’s also some food stuff, and tattoo play(?), and some fun composting stuff going on. I told you. Wild.

I loved this book so much. It was hot and unhinged and honestly kind of scary. The thought of someone you see everyday and depend on stalking and watching you, and then that same person acting worried and checking on you when you seem off? Gives me literal chills.

Add this to your tbr if like me you enjoy your fictional men a few morals short. If real people scare you more than ghosts or zombies. This book is very worth the read. Also there’s a HEA and a non HEA ending which was perfect. I read both. Cried at one and laughed at the other. Amazing. 10/10

This is a pitch black style standalone stalker romance with a ton of triggers and unhinged antics. Jayce has patiently waited 12 years while his obsession grows and he's silently eliminated threats from Alana's life, while being the supportive best friend she needed.
He sets plans in motion to make her finally notice him, even if it's through his masked alter ego Erebus - a serial killer stalker with a dangerous obsession and questionable hobbies.
This is unhinged spice but with a gripping and intense plot, and plenty of mind games.
Yes he's completely crazy and will kill anyone who stands in his way, and his manipulative schemes and acting skills are scary, but he's also unapologetically dedicated, determined and loyal.
Bonus is this has 2 alternative endings, so you can pick if you want the Hea or not, and both work so well.
I cannot wait for the next twisted storyline hinted in the epilogue.

💀 "The fucking audacity of some man to think he could after what was mine. If he touched her, he was going to regret it"

💀 "Let me introduce myself, Alana. I am the one who owns you. I am your savior but also your undoing. I'm who you should fear when you hear something move in the middle of the night"

💀 "She could cut me open and spill my intentines in the street. I'd still profess my love with my dying breath"

💀 "This was the bloodiest, most gruesome thing I'd ever done. And I'd done it because he made Alana cry"

💀 "I think you're overcome by a morbid curiosity that you're desperate to satisfy"
"You're a monster"
"I can be if you're into that"

💀 "There's no escape, baby, and it's time for you to accept that you don't want one"

WHEWOWEEEEEE this book! Not only was this book well written, it had me hooked from the very beginning. I’m just having a hard time even writing about this book because it had me speechless. Like- Haunting Adeline speechless… I really, really enjoyed it!! I can only imagine Ms DeRose’s search history. I mean, why hide a body when you can just turn it into compost to make wine 🤷‍♀️ who woulda thought?

The plot was THICC and it was so well planned and so well thought out! With how everything turned out in the end, (I read both HEA and non-HEA for review purposes) the good ending because I’m a sucker for that shit, it concluded in such a smooth way. There were so many plot twists and connections that I didn’t even see coming! I don’t want to spoil anything, seriously, but I can’t get over how much I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.

Thank you Ms DeRose for giving me the opportunity to read this early, and I hope that when release day comes it sells out!!

Make sure to check your trigger warnings!
This book had me on a hook where I pulled an all-nighter reading and devoured this book. Mask stalker's best friend will do everything in his power to protect and claim his girl. Jayce’s middle name should be unhinged. This book is not a happy ever after. But the option is included for those that need a hea ended. The spice is off the charts. The humor had me cracking up. The nonconsensual tattoo had me winching with the placement and things about the healing process. So much good stuff but I don’t want to say anymore and give away the great reading journey this book will take you on. Go get it now!

Fav Quotes:
“Let me spell this out for you, Alana. Even god cannot kill the Devil. What made you think you could?”

“She was very aware that I was both dangerous and a bit unhinged. I loved that, despite knowing those things.”

“I’d pick her up, dust her off, and fill her to the brink with love. We’d move past all of this the way we were meant to.”

“We’re more than in love. I’ve been after you for twelve years, baby. You were mine then and you’re mine now. You always will be.”

My Rating System:
1 star: Probably DNF - Lacks structure - Grammatical Errors - Boring characters
2 stars: Not a fan - Struggled to finish - Won't reread - Lacked personality - Lacked storyline
3 stars: Neutral - Underwhelmed - Nothing special - Like the book but we're still troubled by a few components
4 stars: Enjoyed - Concept unique - Dialogue felt real - Invested in characters - Missing cherry on top
5 stars: Creme de la creme - It's addictive - Emotional Impact - Highly Recommend - Feels like you are part of the book

THE PLOT 😍 it was heavy and got a bit slow at times but the way my heart was beating omg !! the mind games had me completely FUCKED !! there are two different endings to this book and both are included. you can choose to read the no hea version or skip to the chapters with hea 🖤 i read both and i think i may love the no hea more 👀 both endings are great though !!

imagine being obsessed with your twin brother’s girl for FOURTEEN YEARS !! and when he suddenly dies in a house fire you do everything you can to make her forget about him. THE MAN TATTOOED HER PUSSY ??!!! 🤭

jayce is downright psychotic, unhinged, morally pitch black, masked man, stalker, obsessive, and doesn’t care about anything except alana. sweet innocent alana just lost her fiancé in a fire. she is grieving and trying to move on without feeling guilty.

a year later dark secrets of jayce’s twin brother, start creeping up. it leaves alana in shock and everything begins to unravel from here.

the things jayce did throughout this book had me questioning my morals but like 🫦 HE WAS SO DAMN HOT !! he basically plays two different characters / personalities to manipulate alana. there’s the masked stalker side where he does unholy things and then the best friend side where he comforts her.

this was DARK in terms of themes and psychological wise !!! the spice was 🤯🤩😮‍💨 the perfect balance !!

THIS BOOK. THIS BOOK. THISSSS BOOK!
I binged this in one night staying up till 2:30am. With a stalker/dark romance you can either love it or hate it. Our MMC was def unhinged and did MANY questionable things but like so sweet, he’s just in love. 🥹

✨Tropes✨
- Dual POV
- Twins
- Deceased Fiancé’s Brother
- Widow MFC
- Stalker
- Best Friends
- Secrets
- Pick your ending!

Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
‼️Check your triggers‼️ 😬

MMC - Jayce
Caring, protective, absolutely unhinged.

Look, I wasn't a psychopath. I had my wits about me and I approached things rationally. Usually. Not when it came to Alana. Why? I didn't really know. It had always been that way, ever since Jake brought her home and she smiled at me when she told me her name.

MFC - Alana
Kind, strong, sad girl.

He was dangerous. And my entire body felt like it was on fire because of it.

Overall Thoughts:
Obvi some of the spice wasn’t okay at all, I just pretend in my brain it was because it’s not real. I guess when reading a crazy persons POV you can look past morals 🤷🏻‍♀️ but a part was nasty so in my head that part didn’t happen at all 😂 I really enjoyed the subplot dealing with what her deceased fiancé’s secrets! I was shocked at so many points! So it was a fun read!! The epilogue was exciting!! I want book two NOW.

I loved this book! And incredibly, I couldn't predict all the plot twists - at times my jaw was on the floor!! The MMC is UNHINGED in the most delicious way and the tension was almost too much to handle... The tattooing scene 👀🫠 I don't think I'll ever look at fertiliser in the same way again 😂 the FMC really went through it and seeing her evolve in her confidence was excellent! I loved getting a front seat to the inner workings of Jayce's brain - the amount of times I inappropriately laughed at his deadpan delivery of news is a sign I probably need a brain doctor myself 😂 I also loved that you could pick the ending - either Non-HEA or HEA. Sooooo, I hurt my own feelings and then repaired them 😂Another out-of-the-park book by this author!!

I was very kindly given a version early and so I'm giving my thoughts.
