MindShifting: Stop Your Brain From Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success

Rate this book
Napoleon Hill remarked, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Jesse Jackson observed, “If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it—then I can achieve it.”

These quotes are both about mindsets. A mindset refers to the attitudes, beliefs, and ways of thinking that determine a person’s behavior, outlook, and mental attitude toward a situation.

Everything starts with the mindset.

If you want to be motivated and persistent in overcoming obstacles, setbacks, and procrastination, those are mindsets. When you feel overwhelmed by obstacles, when setbacks make you want to quit or scream, when you can’t seem to get started, those are mindsets as well.

Self-management, executive function, self-regulation, personal agency, and personal responsibility are mindsets.
Feeling stress, anger, anxiety, and demotivation are all mindsets, and so are feeling curious, playful, and confident.

Wouldn’t you want to be able to switch from a mindset that is holding you back to one that allows you to be resilient, resourceful, innovative, or perseverant? That’s Mindshifting. This book teaches you how to Mindshift. We will cover over 50 different techniques you can use to shift from mindsets that hold you back to ones that propel you forward.

The human brain is the result of billions of years of evolution and may be the most complex system in the entire universe. The brain controls everything we do, and everything we do starts with the brain’s mindset. In this book, you will learn how mindsets are formulated, how to recognize when a mindset may be holding you back, and how to switch to a more beneficial mindset.

You will learn how to walk into situations prepared with a mindset predisposed toward success. When life throws unpleasant surprises at your plans, when people oppose you, when your brain starts sabotaging your actions or your emotions, you will be able to recover faster. When you see others held back by their own mindsets, you will have tools to help them reset and tap into their own resourcefulness.

Armed with this knowledge, you will be happier and more productive. You will find that situations that used to result in fight or flight reactions instead become opportunities for innovation and collaboration—just like the hundreds of people who have taken Mindshifting classes over the last five years.

This is a powerful resource that extends far beyond its initial target audience of educators. As a course creator in online community settings and a mother homeschooling a child with autism while working full-time from home, I found this book to be an invaluable tool for navigating the complexities of my multifaceted life.

The core premise of the book - that everything starts with mindset - resonates deeply with the challenges faced by many in today's fast-paced, often overwhelming world. Weisburgh's approach to understanding and actively shifting mindsets offers a practical framework for tackling obstacles, overcoming procrastination, and managing stress.

One of the book's strengths lies in its comprehensive coverage of over 50 techniques for mindshifting. This variety ensures that readers can find methods that work best for their individual needs and situations. The techniques are particularly useful for those juggling multiple roles or dealing with neurodiversity, as they provide strategies for enhancing self-management, executive function, and personal agency.

A standout feature of the book is its use of full-color illustrations. For neurodivergent readers like myself, these visual aids are crucial in clarifying complex concepts, making the information more accessible and memorable. This thoughtful inclusion demonstrates Weisburgh's understanding of diverse learning styles.

The book not only focuses on personal growth but also equips readers with tools to help others overcome limiting mindsets. This aspect is particularly valuable for educators, parents, and community leaders who are in positions to positively influence others.

While the book is marketed towards educators, its principles are universally applicable. Whether you're managing a classroom, running an online course, or navigating the challenges of parenting a child with special needs, the mindshifting techniques offer practical ways to approach situations with resilience and creativity.

Perhaps most importantly, the book offers a sense of comfort and empowerment. By framing mindsets as changeable and providing concrete methods for this change, Weisburgh gives readers hope and agency in facing life's challenges.

In conclusion, "Mindshifting" is more than just a self-help book; it's a comprehensive guide to understanding and harnessing the power of our minds. Its blend of scientific background, practical techniques, and accessible presentation makes it a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their mental agility and overall well-being. Whether you're an educator, a parent, or simply someone striving for personal growth, this book offers tools and insights that can transform your approach to life's challenges.

This book is a mixture of psychology, sociology and cognitive science. The author explains in detail the reasons for one's unhappiness and provides a detailed list of how to break out of our brains' bad scripts and find positive outcomes and better mental states. It is a book for self-improvement.
One thing I didn't like was a lack of section headings in the first five chapters. Most of the books I've been reading have them.
Also, the page count shown by goodreads is incorrect. Including the table of contents, dedication and preface, my copy contains 180 pages, not 237.
