Rate this book
Every night, Safran dreams of Talia-a sister she never had.

Six months after becoming a royal Protector, Safran has found new purpose and direction. She uses her burgeoning supernatural abilities to protect the city of Vitalia's magical relics. But those abilities come with dreams of family that defy reality and explanation.

Then the Order of Death steals a powerful Tablet in broad daylight. They leave behind a message in ash that only Safran understands.

"Stastaverren. Come alone. Talia."

Burdened by secrets and failure, Safran and her brother Curt leave Vitalia to discover a dangerous world of rebels and roaming monsters. Cryptic notes from someone who calls herself Talia draw Safran toward a series of painful revelations.

What will Safran find in Stastaverren? Why was her sister's name on that wall? And has she been fighting for the wrong side all along?

Addison Horner learned to read at age two, and he still knows how. I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest review!
I read the first book in this series in under 24 hours. It captured my attention like the best books always do, and the sequel was no different!! It was FANTASTIC
I loved the change between Safran's role in the first book and the second book. Parts were the same, but from the beginning she was dedicated to protecting others, not just her brother
Her arc involving Talia was FASCINATING and so well done!! Talia herself had such a cool arc—no spoilers, but she grew in beautiful ways and I love the way the author handled it all!
I loved seeing all our favorites, too, despite the slight change in setting! Everyone—Seele, Clou, Kammon, they all had a little mini arc within the book!! Speaking of certain members of this group, the romance was so sweet and well executed! It didn't overwhelm the plot of the book, but I was definitely grinning like an idiot over some truly adorable parts. (And had my heart a little broken over one certain scene involving a particular couple. But I shan't say any more except I still loved it)
I also really enjoyed the world building in this book! Exploring the new city, learning more about the Tablets, learning about the Bleed, it was all so cool! It feels like a fascinating fantasy world and I can't wait to spend more time there
WAIT also I loved meeting a bunch of new characters and seeing some old faces I didn't expect to see again! Also Father Enneas remains one of my all time favorites I want him to adopt me as his granddaughter. Like a normal person
All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this book!! I've always loved a good heist story and this is no exception. I can't wait to see where else this series goes!

A must read! The gripping, action-packed second installment in The Vitalian Chronicles includes everything we loved about book one (found family, political intrigue, a unique magic system, and high-stakes adventure) and takes it to the next level.

Horner has quickly become an auto-buy author for me, and I look forward to the next book in the series!

This was a highly anticipated sequel and it did not disappoint!

Threads of Light takes everything from book one and dives further into the magic and worldbuilding of the Corporeal Empire. I loved seeing Safran face a new conflict that took her from the comforts of her home in Vitalia to new places like Moesia and Stastaverren.

There’s also a beautiful transition with the themes from book one getting deeper with new messages for this book: family and being seen–especially over differences involving Curt. It shows how we, as humans, will always have some learning to do. Some layers to keep peeling away as we grow. And that’s what makes this book filled with deep meaning, as well as Safran and friends so relatable as a reader.

The writing is as immaculate as ever. The action scenes throughout this story are so visually pleasing and fluid, and the storytelling weaves plot details well enough for you to stay on your toes before they all come together in the end.

I couldn’t recommend book one, Marrow and Soul, enough to friends and family after I first read it. Now, I can guarantee The Vitalian Chronicles is a must read for everyone of all ages. And I’m excited for what more there is to come.

There are a LOT of things I could rave about with this book. Complex, flawed, richly developed characters. Action that would make even a ghost's heart race. Nuanced, deeply thoughtful perspectives on life, death, conflict, peace, and belonging.
But I think the best way to actually convey how utterly immersive and spellbinding Threads of Light was is this little anecdote of my post-reading experience.
-
I finished reading Threads of Light in the last 5 minutes of my lunch break at work. Went back to my office. Swiped my door fob and IMMEDIATELY walked into the wall instead of the perfectly good door a foot away. Turns out, I am NOT a ghost.
Apparently this is what happens when the book is so good you're fully immersed in its world and need more than 5 minutes to come back to the real one and its laws of physics.
Anyway, if you too want to be fully convinced you live in a world where walking through walls is a thing you can do (or at least excuse your clumsy side as testing for ghostly abilities), go read Addison Horner's books*. Do it.
*You may want to stock up on some sweet and savory pastries first.

This book is mind-blowing and exceeds all expectations. I have never read a book quite like this—where I am so utterly shocked and on the edge of my seat. The world and characters are so unique and artfully crafted. They feel REAL. There were moments in this story that I teared up, my jaw dropped, I gasped allowed, etc. Addison Horner is an amazing writer; his descriptions are vivid and beautifully described, and he keeps you guessing with what will happen next.

I loved Marrow and Soul, and Threads of Light was an amazing sequel that truly portrays fighting for light in the midst of darkness. I was absolutely riveted.

Threads of Light by Addison Horner is an exciting sequel to Marrow & Soul. More adventure, more action, more twist, and more heart! Familial bonds shine bright in this YA spooky fantasy. It's hard to talk about all the amazing things about this book without spoilers and the twist!

Safran must face new challenges as her chosen and blood family is threatened. Mysteries wait around every corner and death stalks her quest. Will she make it out alive? Only her will and her connections will keep her in the light. 5/5 amazing sequel!

“Marrow and Soul” was one of my top reads of 2024. Threads of Light is just as good. I was so mad at the author during a few chapter so this book but by the end, all was forgiven. If you love adventurous stories of both found & blood families, this is a must read. Safran & Curt are both endearing and captivating characters.

Overall, Threads of Light by Addison Horner is a rewarding read for those who enjoy character-driven stories. Safran is a strong yet relatable character whose journey is both inspiring and thought-provoking. In the end, Safran’s journey illustrates a compelling truth: we do not have to face our battles alone, and true strength often lies in our ability to open ourselves up to others.

Even more action-packed than the first, Threads of Light is a unique adventure filled with family (blood and found), twists, and a fascinating world unlike anything you’ve read before.

I adore how these characters’ relationships developed from the first book. These are characters I love to root for—my favorites will always be Safran, Curt, Kammon, and Seele.

The twists were great (I don’t think anything can top the major plot twist of the first book for me), but I was pleasantly surprised by several choices made in this book.

And the budding romance? I am ON BOARD. So cute! I didn’t expect the pairing based on the first book alone, but it worked so well. Can’t wait to see it develop further.

The ending leaves me wanting more! I’m excited for whatever comes next.

With vivid prose, enthralling characters, and a complex world, Threads of Light is not to be missed! I admit, sometimes the intricate worldbuilding loses me a little bit, but if you’re into that thing, this story shouldn’t be a problem!

(I received an ARC, and all opinions are my own.)
