In spite of the darkness that dwells within, never forgo your humanity.
Unassuming, Kendra's life is as normal as any other teenage girl's. On the cusp of graduation, with an endearing future ahead, she has a lot on her plate already.
But then Kendra and her sister are brutally attacked, and a mysterious classmate, Eden Blackwell, saves her. She discovers he belongs to a secret organization dedicated to hunting demons-beings Kendra never knew existed.
As the wardens of her new prison, the Hunters swear they will protect her, but there's just one problem:
She's no longer human.
Plunged into the middle of an insidious conspiracy, Kendra has no time to process her infernal existence. A sinister covenant stalks her, and as Eden wrestles with his own haunting past, he and the Hunters fear they may not be capable of protecting her or the city anymore.
It's adapt-or-die, and Kendra must overcome devastating obstacles and the contradiction in her humanity if she hopes to save her home from the evil seeking to subjugate it.
Eric Still is a dark fantasy and horror author based out of Los Angeles, California. Most wouldn't know it upon first meeting him, but Eric is autistic, and he is quite proud of the tribulations he has overcome. In fact, he has turned it into his super power, channeling his hyperfixation in order to craft his stories and efficiently utilize his creativity! Eric decided to become an author due to his natural love for writing and poetry, and his deep desire to tell stories around lore he has created for over a decade. His love for all that is dark and macabre naturally spurred his desire to write within a genre that combined fantastical and horrifying machinations alike.
His hobbies include playing video games, reading (obviously), hiking, going to concert, attending goth venues (was it mentioned he's goth? Did his black cat make it obvious?), and spending time with his friends in general. He greatly enjoys meaningful conversations covering philosophy and can monologue for hours on a topic he's passionate and cares about!
He draws inspiration from several sources, from the dark world of Marvel's Blade to the Young Adult mythologies of Percy Jackson, video games like Skyrim, God of War, and Dead Space, and anime such as Re:Zero, Dragon Ball, and Full Metal Alchemist. He is certain that, if one is so discerning to catch them, they can glean several references throughout his books!
What an absolute delight. If I had this book in high school, I would've devoured it in minutes with the same ferocity as the demons Still has created. Instead, I got to savor the details my younger self would have missed, indulging in a visual buffet that left me wanting more and craving a visual media adaptation.
The world Still has built is a fascinating combination of Sci-Fi and Supernatural set in a tone of Gothic horror that ties it all together. Reminiscent of the demon-hunting adventures in Supernatural, the steady horror and growing dread of Stranger Things, and the demonic wit of Hazbin Hotel (albeit tuned down to a YA audience!), Blood Creed Genesis proves itself to be perfect for readers that enjoy a bit of humor amidst their horror. Don't make any mistake, though; when things turn south, it is handled with delicate seriousness.
I highly recommend this book to any YA reader with a love for the supernatural, sci-fi gadgets, secret societies, and twists that will leave you reeling. In the meantime, I'll be eagerly anticipating the sequel!
I received this book for review purposes and am voluntarily leaving my honest review. Genesis by Eric Still in the Blood Creed series is a dark fantasy centered around the fate of Kendra, a normal high school girl nearing graduation, as she unwittingly becomes embroiled in the hidden world of demons and secret organizations. As her fate unfolds and she transforms over time, we also see the fates of those around her who are impacted directly as her life gets turned upside down. The devastation to her mental health and personal identity becomes apparent as she's faced with greater and greater obstacles and odds from the supernatural world.
Following Kendra primarily, she comes across as incredibly fleshed out and realistic for a senior year high schooler, and her character growth over the course of the story felt realistic and natural as well. The numerous moments of delving into her mental and emotional states, in particular, were some of my favorites because of how well everything was described and how the inner turmoil was depicted. I often found Kendra's emotions influencing my own as I read, helping to really absorb me into the story. Eden was also incredibly well done, and since I adore stoic characters slowly becoming soft, I always had a great time reading his sections. I also loved Zane for his humor, Allen for the well explained background and growth at the end, and Andrew for being a real cinnamon roll! Overall, I thought the characters alone were a huge plus to this story as they were all so fleshed out and realistic. It truly felt like every character had so much care put into them.
The general world-building was also a real favorite of mine with this read. In particular, I loved how Ichor and the omens were described in regards to the wider environment (and especially that Ichor was described in feminine and maternal contexts!). As someone with knowledge and interest in theological history, it was tons of fun noting similarities between Ichor and omens with other theological and mythological concepts I've learned about over the years. Some of the actions at the hands of the demons definitely surprised me at first since I wasn't expecting it, but they never felt over done and really added to the gravity of various moments and the general danger of the demons. I'm also a real sucker for demon nobility and hierarchies, so, although they weren't explored super in depth in this book, I definitely hope they'll be looked at more heavily in future books in the series!
Looking at the technical aspects, the pacing generally felt just right and was consistent throughout the book as far as matching any moments of tension or higher energy. While I did find the writing style a bit "vocabulary-y" in the beginning, I got used to it quickly and by about 25-30% of the way through the story I was hooked and the style glided through my mind with ease. Plus, to me, it definitely felt like Still settled more and more into their style as the story progressed, and that helped to "relax" into the read.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this book! At 5/5 stars for me, I will definitely both be recommending this to my friends and family as well as keeping an eye out for the next additions to the series. Genesis truly felt like a story with a lot of care and thought put into it, and I can't wait to continue the story!
Blood Creed Genesis is an amazing supernatural science fiction book. It reminds me in a way of Tokyo Ghoul in the sense the main character is forever changed and is now forced to deal with the life that follows that change and I’m a sucker for that trope! Eric Still does a a fantastic job handling the characters and giving enough page time to the many characters in the story. Kendra and Eden happen to be my favorite. No spoilers but this book had me tearing up in parts and smiling at the end! I cannot stress enough how excited I am for Book Two!
Sometimes you find a book with such great, cinematic writing you can clearly envision it getting made into an animated movie or even a game. Blood Creed: Genesis is one of those books.
Eric Still has written a story that reminds me of an amazing blend of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Underworld and Supernatural. To me Genesis, the first in a planned series of 5 books, is a wonderful start into the story of a girl who gets pulled into a world of demons and a secret organization of hunters and has to navigate between those while balancing her life with the hunger that manifests inside her after a terrifying encounter with hellhounds...
Kendra, Eden and Intico are my favorite characters so far, and I don't want to say too much about what book 1 is about, but while Kendra's and Eden's story plays out in a futuristic Chicago, the story about guilt, grief, newly discovered powers and courage is timeless and explored through a bond of sisters and the growing terror of demons, among other things. I also have to say Intico is deliciously shadowy and darkly commanding and also has a pendant for a theatrical entrance. I adore him!
Overall I can't wait for the next book and I hope to see more great art of the characters and for an animated series or game to come up in the near future! This kind of story has the perfect setting for it and that first fight between Eden and Intico alone needs to be animated.
One more thing: go and watch the book trailer. I am usually not the type, but I would totally get the audio book of Blood Creed: Genesis. The voice actors do an amazing job!
I am ready to make a deal with the Devil for everything. 😏
. Thank you to @ericauthority for giving me the chance to read his fantastic debut!
