I gave it a week of trying and just couldn't get into it. A huge part of this was due to it being the second or third (?) book in a series, which wasn't hinted at in the book's description. I didn't realize it was a sequel until I'd started reading and found myself quite confused because I had zero context as to the characters and prior events that were heavily referenced.

While sometimes books in series can be read out of order because there is minimal reliance on prior events, this wasn't one of them. The writing itself seemed good, and if I was familiar with the previous book(s), I think I could've enjoyed this. Unfortunately, I had to put too much effort in trying to figure out what had been going on.
