Imperatora: Book One

Rate this book
Three women are violently torn from their worlds and thrust into the unforgiving desert kingdom of Al’idris.

Strangers on the same desolate road, they quickly realize their only hope of survival—and finding their way home—is each other.

Ell, a young forester, is haunted by an injury that won’t heal and whispers she can’t ignore. Hellion, a priestess, has lost her god’s voice, leaving her to face the clash between her faith and the kingdom’s worship of the Lady of Life and Death. And Desde, a refined enchantress, must reckon with a harsh truth: every spell she casts drains her life away.

Bound together by fate, the women strike a dangerous deal with the queen of Al’idris. In return for their help uncovering a secret that threatens the kingdom, they may find the answers they seek. But as they navigate clashing personalities, magical dangers, a growing affection and a frightful transformation, each must confront the limits of their strength—and the terrifying truth behind their forced exile.

In a world where nothing is as it seems, answers are only found if one survives its perils.

For readers who love unique epic fantasy stories told from the perspective of women, featuring a sapphic slow burn romance. Imperatora will appeal to fans of Dungeons and Dragons, The Witcher, and Gideon the Ninth.

First off, hi—and thanks for reading my bio, and hopefully my book! This series continues thanks to your support.

So, a little about me. My fantasy obsession started at age 12, when I stole a bunch of quarters from my dad’s coin jar to buy a used copy of Pools of Radiance, a Forgotten Realms novel. That book cracked open a new world for me. I devoured every fantasy novel I could get my hands on, and soon enough, I was conjuring up my own tales of swords and sorcery.

Fast forward a couple decades: I spent one making symphonic metal, and another building my career as a software developer. Now, I’ve finally returned to my first love—writing.

When I’m not at the keyboard, you’ll probably find me lifting at the gym, out on a hike or bike ride, or diving into all kinds of roleplaying games. My best friend is my girlfriend, Alex, who’s stuck with me through thick and thin.

If you’ve read Imperatora and want to share your thoughts, feel free to leave a review or message me on social media. I love hearing what resonated with you, what didn’t, and what you'd like to see more of as the series unfolds.

Anyway—back to writing Book 2!

While I had a little trouble getting into the book for the first few chapters, I came to understand that the disorientation I felt with the setting was similar to that of the protagonists. Once I settled in, I found myself really enjoying the world building and exploring the world of Imperatora through the eyes of the heroes.

Each of the characters grows over the course of the story and each has a distinct voice that only becomes stronger and more complex as time goes on. I also really enjoyed watching the characters get to know each other, and to watch those relationships evolve. While I enjoyed all three of the main protagonists, and I'm quite looking forward to seeing where they go, I particularly enjoyed Axel, one of the secondary characters, who brought charm and humour to the story.

The plot adds gradual complexity over time, which I like, and the world feels very lived in. The book is full of little details that come back to play a role later in the story. A few elements don't have immediate payoff, but I assume they'll be there for the next book.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in in a unique kind of fantasy world, and when the next book in the series comes out, I'm definitely going to pick it up.

I can't keep reading this. The prologue into the start had little to no set up for the world/s or characters to actually seize my interest, and the fast pace didn't help that. So I'm utterly lost and endlessly confused about all of the book. Quite unfortunate because I really really wanted to love this.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I wanted to absolutely fall in love with this book. And it did hook me but not until the last quarter. The world building is the central focus of the book and is absolutely breathtaking. I could see it all within my minds eye which is an incredible feat of story telling.

I've recently been reading first person POVs so maybe that was part of it but I had a difficult time getting to know the characters from third person POV. It was also difficult to determine the relationships that developed between characters from this POV. It wasn't as easy to read between the lines.

There is magic woven within the storylines and it was difficult for me to understand why and how it worked. I feel that that is also a part of the story but it made it difficult for me.

I would have liked to see more on depth or more obvious feelings towards and among the 3 main characters. Whether that be a neutral feeling, a distrustful feeling or romantic. And possibly get a bit more information earlier on within the story of how the magic works within the characters origin worlds in order to better engage with the story and how it might be different as they travel.

I am looking forward to the continuation of the story as it's gotten quite intriguing!

Mia Zbikowski’s Imperatora launches an ambitious fantasy epic that stands confidently alongside the works of George R. R. Martin and Patrick Rothfuss. The story centers on three compelling heroines: Ell, a resourceful forester; Hellion, a devout priestess; and Desde, an enigmatic enchantress. They are torn from their respective worlds and thrust, without explanation, into the uncharted realm of Al’idris. Their desperate search for answers—and a way home—drives a journey brimming with danger, wonder, and unexpected truths.

The novel’s most striking innovation lies in its protagonists. Unlike many modern fantasy tales, Zbikowski’s narrative is driven entirely by a cast of formidable women, each written with depth and nuance. The alternating point-of-view structure allows readers to truly inhabit their minds, uncovering not just how they act, but why. Desde, for example, displays a confident exterior that masks deep uncertainty, a clever inversion of her magical prowess. Each heroine brings a unique voice to the narrative, creating a dynamic ensemble that feels real and relatable, even amidst the extraordinary. The world of Al’idris is vast, intricate, and alive with culture and history.

Zbikowski’s attention to detail makes every setting—from desolate landscapes to bustling cities—feel vivid and immersive. As Ell, Hellion, and Desde traverse this strange new world, their quest unfolds with breathtaking scope. The pacing never lags, blending the personal struggles of the protagonists with the epic stakes of their journey. Each discovery adds layers to both the characters and the setting, making it impossible to put the book down.

This is the first installment in what promises to be a monumental series. Zbikowski openly acknowledges her inspiration from Martin and Rothfuss, even referencing the long waits between releases in her dedication. Given the richness of Imperatora, readers should prepare for a similar investment of patience. The sheer craftsmanship of this opening volume, however, makes the potential wait worthwhile. It’s rare to find a debut that feels so polished, so assured.

Imperatora is a triumph for fans of epic fantasy. Zbikowski’s masterful world-building, complex characters, and spellbinding prose mark her as a rising star in the genre. For those who savor richly imagined tales of adventure and self-discovery, this book is essential reading. While the journey ahead may take time, the rewards will undoubtedly be worth it.

Disclaimer: I am NOT a fantasy fan. I find the vast majority to be bogged down with endless descriptions of trees and plant life, with little to no character interaction or dialogue *coughTolkiencough*. I figured this would be much the same but I found the synopsis intriguing so I thought, what the heck.

If more fantasy writers wrote with the pacing and timing of Ms. Zbikowski, I’d be a much bigger fan of the genre. She displays an innate ability to move from narrative to dialogue at juuuust the right time, and managed to keep me turning pages in a genre I’d just about written off (I’m so punny).

The characters are complex and, at times, it was a bit challenging to tell how they felt about each other - for me, that was part of the fun. I love delving deep into the story to read between the lines and pick up on undercurrents of feeling. The story felt more intense, the characters more real, because of that. People don’t sit there constantly telling everyone exactly what they think about them in real life, but writing has become so dumbed down nowadays that intuiting emotions may be difficult for some. Perhaps those people should stick with trashy romance novels - I hear Bridgerton is coming out with another season, maybe that’s more their speed.

If you’re looking for an engrossing read with perfectly-written landscapes and wonderfully flawed characters, this is the book for you. I am eagerly anticipating book two, so Ms. Zbikowski better be writing!

Engrossing world-building, compelling plot and intriguing characters; I really should have liked this book more, but there was something about the writing that made me feel somewhat distanced from said characters. I don't really know what the problem was: a bit more telling than showing, too little dialogue, skipping some scenes that I felt shouldn't have been skipped ? Maybe a little bit of each. And it's too bad because the world was so interesting and original and the premise was so intriguing. All three protagonists were quite likeable, but we learned so little about them and their pasts, except maybe Hellion and even there it felt rushed, and there were so few meaningful interactions that I, as I've said, felt distanced from them, their relationships and their troubles.

Still, this was a debut. If the writing improves in the areas that I said were lacking this could become a phenomenal series because the ideas are really great, it's just the execution that needs a little working on.

This one needs to be on your book shelf

I LOVED this book. 3 Female bad a$$ warriors that only are realizing their power and potential together. I don't want to give away to much for spoilers, but I do want to express how much I enjoyed the world building. We are learning the lay out with the three female leads so it's wonderful to get there reaction with the reader. All three are powerful on their own (strenghth and mental abilities) and brought together unexpectedly they are unraveling why and what they have to bring to the table to save their new home.

There is an amazing slow burn relationship, finding of one's faith AND sword and magic play.

You need to add this to your reading list.

I am in the process of my second read so I am totally ready for book two.

Thank you Mia, for whisking me away to a place with characters I have fallen for.

Imperatora is a thrilling fantasy novel that feels like it captures the spirit of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in all the best ways (although I have never played!). What makes Imperatora stand out is its perfectly fleshed-out characters. They are so well written and have an emotional depth that make them feel real. Whether they're facing off against monstrous foes or wrestling with their own inner demons, you can’t help but root for them. It’s the kind of book where you miss the characters when you finish reading it. I can't wait for the sequel!
Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, and anyone who enjoys character-driven storytelling!

It’s rare to find a story that features not just one, but three strong female protagonists—each with a distinct voice and personality. What really stood out to me was how each character brings her own unique skillset and set of weaknesses to the table. Their strengths complement each other beautifully, and their differences create a dynamic, believable team you can’t help but root for.

The world-building in this book is excellent. The settings are vivid, the lore is rich, and the action scenes are easy to visualize without feeling bogged down by excessive detail.

I thoroughly enjoyed diving into this story.

Very good start

This is a good read with an interesting setting and likable characters. This definitely introduces the three MCs well, and gets you hooked into their storylines. The lead in for the next book does kinda smack, a’la cliff meet face :)

ok

It took a while to establish the characters and setting, but, once established, they are quite engaging.

I really enjoyed this!

The author's focus on world-building is really front and center, and it draws you into this realm that feels vast and alien but also crafted with a lot of intention and care. You keep wondering about the mysteries at the heart of the story, and what is actually happening.

The characters are also really enjoyable, and the interplay of their very different life experiences gives a lot of vitality to the story. The writing itself is dense and vivid and has this cinematic feel to it that I enjoyed a lot. Would recommend!
