Amidst a darker Marvel Universe, Spider-Man is forced on a spellbinding adventure that will cost him his life!

This story was all over the place with its multiple writers and multiple artists of extremely varying quality but I loved the ending.

Thought it was pretty good. There were three or so issues in the middle that were not really up to par. Hopefully the Spider-Man editors do better in these next couple of months.

[ENG] This series takes place after the event of Blood Hunt. Here, Spider-Man is appointed by Dr. Doom (the new Sorcerer Supreme) as the new Earth's Champion filling the role once taken by Dr. Strange.
Victor bestows Spider-Man with the ability to cast magic and a new suit in order for him to pass the tests of the Scions of Cyttorak and thus keeping Earth's protection from "The Blight".
From here on we see how Peter Parker, who is usually in charge of "minor" country based crimes, needs to face an interdimensional threat against the children of a literal god. How can a regular down to earth hero fill in the role of a nearly all mighty sorcerer like Dr. Strange?
I've loved Joe Kelly's work for a long time, but this one also shows a true understanding of what makes Spider-Man special. His powers here sure help in some way, but what makes him come through at the end is why he is a hero, his sense of justice, responsibility, and how does he see life and treat others. I love this kind of approaches to the character that go beyond throwing punches, webs and a couple of jokes (which I also love).
I've enjoyed this work from start to finish, with all the highs and lows. I even cried a little. If you like Spider-Man, I can assure you will love this.

------

All in all, it's not a bad story—especially after Zeb Wells' previous run—but it suffers from the usual problem: it's too long and the different writers involved are not on the same level.

The start is very good: we're on familiar ground. Spider-Man is well characterised, the humour is good, and the stakes are plausible and not incoherent, even though magic is included in the plot.

The twists are fairly well done and interesting, particularly but from the moment the X-Men enter the scene—which isn't as silly as it seems—things get bogged down and the writers who take over tone down the level with sentimentality, self-pity and rubbish before the creative team wakes up for a decent enough finale.

Despite several artists at the helm, the artwork is generally good, with one or two exceptions.

A strange conclusion to this umpteenth version of the series, but one which, while far from indispensable, is not dishonourable either.

I wanted to read a main-line Spider-Man, so the comic store gentlemen suggested this run - it was bonkers. I had to basically take everything at face - Dr Doom is the Sorc Supreme? Ok, cool...Spider-Man is like not with MJ, I guess I am 20 years behind, but doesn't Peter have a beard and Mayday Parker? So I am a confused reader, and that did not impact my fun.

A lot of neato little things, like taking random bullshit words like "Cyttorak" from The Day:tm: and giving them like a whole cosmic thing is, for me, fun. I also enjoyed the themes of Spider-Man on display without worrying about 'One More Day' or whatever bullshit. It was cheeky Spider-Man being the best of us and broke at the same time, you know, Spider-Man.

A pretty good mix of silly Spider-Man and serious Spider-Man that acts as a solid lead in to One World Under Doom while still showcasing Peter specifically. This gets pretty dark but I liked seeing Peter come out of that. And pairing him with X-Men and giving Juggernaut quite a bit to do was nice as well.

Coming after the slog into which Nick Spencer's run degenerated, one volume of Zeb Wells was enough to convince me that ASM has become a book where writers I otherwise like go to do stuff I can't bear. Joe Kelly, though, did the last 616 Peter Parker series I enjoyed, the Deadpool team-up book, so this seemed worth a tentative toe in the water. First problem: even leaving aside the confusingly numbered side-issues, only half of it is by Kelly, who trades issues back and forth by ones and twos with YA novelist Justina Ireland. Still, the seams don't show too badly, bar maybe in the scene from one of her issues where the Black Cat advises Peter to find his joy. Something you'd think anyone who's known him more than five minutes would realise was futile, even aside from being generationally iffy. Though I suppose there is the sliding timeline... Which, now I think about it, means that in another decade or so, certainly less time than I've already been reading Spider-Man comics, it would be plausible for him to start saying 'skibidi'. There are times when expecting the imminent collapse of civilisation is almost consoling.

While we're discussing the creators, a note on the art: the aforementioned .DEATHS side-issues are largely showcases for Kev Walker and Mark Buckingham, the finale is Ed McGuinness, and there are a couple of pages of mystical malarkey by Niko Henrichon. But a lot of this is drawn by people whose names I don't recognise, but whose work looks very JRJr. Which, I suppose, if he's not available, is at least more ethical than using AI? Certainly it's a classic look for a Spidey comic.

The story, though, is a curious combination of classic Peter Parker tropes, and nowhere near his usual wheelhouse. So: recently, Doctor Strange lost the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme yet again (he really should put a tag on it), this time to Doctor Doom. This happened in comics I've read, by mostly solid writers, so I can accept it. But it is nevertheless part of a company-wide game of musical chairs where character X takes over the powers of Y that's been getting out of hand for a while, and I can gauge how it must feel to the casual reader from my reaction to one of the.supporting players here: Agent Coulson is now Death (and also I think they've lost Clark Gregg's image rights). Anyway, being Sorcerer Supreme comes with great powers, but also terrible responsibilities re: protecting the Earth from the scum of the outer planes. And Doom can't entirely be faffed with the latter, so he delegates and enlists Spidey for an upcoming mystical challenge. Peter gets a new suit, a crash-course in the occult arts from Strange's astral form, and some magical doohickeys, most notably the Reeds of Raggadorr, which bring the bearer back to life. Something he'll need because, even if he wins the contests, he'll die in spectacularly horrible ways each time.

Now, for all the magical ornamentation, this is a very Spidey story. As he legitimately complains here, the world (for which read Marvel, the creators, and the readers) has been putting him through the wringer for as long as he can remember. So why not take that to its logical conclusion and go full Kenny with a story where he suffers an unspeakably gruesome fate each issue?

Because, it turns out, even Spider-Man can ultimately be pushed too far, decide striving is pointless in the face of the endless sorrow, and quit. Now, the final straw (not reed) doesn't quite work: it's the sense that whatever he does or doesn't do, in a few decades or centuries, it won't have mattered at all. Which for most people is true – but Spidey is a superhero, and not even a strictly street-level one, but someone who has played a key role in stopping at least a couple of extinction-level events. So yes, this does require a certain amount of squinting. But it provides an opportunity to restate that central power/responsibility motif in new garb, and to use a superhero comic to attempt an answer for one of the central human quandaries: what's the point of any of it when our lives are so short, so full of suffering, and in almost all cases so utterly inconsequential?

Inevitably, the answers it comes up with aren't entirely convincing, or even especially original, but they are more entertaining to read when they're delivered via some quite spectacular punching and the odd genuinely funny joke, rather than through the pontifications of a pious old fraud or, worse, a.self-help book. Even here, though, there's a drawback in the specifics of the punchees. The central contest is necessary to the renewal of a compact with Cyttorak, the big red cosmic bod best known for empowering the Juggernaut. Who now turns out to have eight scions, each representing a different facet of inevitability, but mainly representing the inevitability of Marvel characters past a certain threshold of fantasy being a bit shit. I mean, even the Arakkii at least had different colour schemes. So while Cyttorak himself doesn't initially appear to contribute much, there is eventually a certain pleasing forebrain tickle to be had from the contrast of this immovable object with the unstoppable force he confers on others. His kids, on the other hand...I suspect they were pitched as Succession, but cosmic; sadly, most of them are even more tedious and indistinct than real world failsons.

Oh, and obviously, with all of this even bigger drama than usual on Spider-Man's plate, Peter Parker in his civilian identity is failing to meet his own low bar when it comes to over-promising and under-delivering, then beating himself up over it, yet learning nothing. Which has always been one of the things I've disliked about the character, though I did wonder if there was at least a Spy X Family nod in his blaming his sudden disappearances on urgently needing the loo.

But as with the different writers, all of these elements that should massively clash do create a coherent whole, somehow. Yet one which I struggle to describe as either good or bad, and certainly can't dismiss as merely mid. A very strange comic indeed – but even as it forcefully reminded me of the inevitability of death and the vanity of mortal achievement, certainly not the dispiriting plod of business as usual which had driven me away from ASM. So I guess that's a qualified success?

This maybe one of my recent favorite stories involving Spider-man and I read like all in one go, it was so epic. I love the set up from Dr DOOM suddenly appearing and throwing him in this scenario and its basically a gauntlet that Pete has to face and seeing how he is the responsible one, how could he not accept it and then you just see the epic scope of this story as he fights almost all the scions of Cyttorak and it just keeps becoming epic and dangerous.

The initial issues are kinda funny where he defeats the villains so quickly like he basically makes Cyntros a spaghetti lol and I love the writing there and its so funny but then it becomes serious as other characters come in and test him in different ways like CYPERION and his story is wild but the way Spidey uses physics here is kinda intriguing and love the sci-fi explanation of it but you start to see the death taking its toll on Spidey and changing him.

The issue vs CYRIOS where he has to experiences the losses he has faced in his life as they travel through time was a wild one and you see how much Peter has lost but despite that he continues to be the hero and I love the writing for Shay and Felicia and you see how important they are in Pete's life and inform his character and seriously loved it!

But it isn't until he finally faces CALLIX and CYRA where you get the real feel of the story, the cocky head battle vs Callix was quickie but that made him even more dangerous as we move towards the end of the arc but that issue vs CYRA and what she makes him go through has to be one of the greatest and most emotional Spidey issues ever as he feels the death of everyone and the existential horror and dread of it breaks him and the writing after it exploring what it means for Peter is so good, seriously this is where for me the story becomes super good.

Seriously the issues following it exploring his mental state and sometimes even we feel after failures whats the point of it, and exploring Peter like that but how he ultimately comes back after circumstances makes him.. its a testament to the writing of the writers and it will inspire some reader for sure to fight through it and yes its normal, we all go through it but we have to try fighting and seriously thats PEAK SPIDEY WRITING!

Love that moment and it made me so hyped up continuing the series and you just see the scope of the story continues to become big like the coming of the blight and Callix role in it and well the finale just is awesome. I love how it shows Peter saving others and even sacrificing his own life but my god the last few issues exploring CYRA and even her character evolution was so good to see and what she does for Peter..!! Yes I need her to be in the supporting cast of SM comics after this one please.. she becomes such a fascinating character and the reason for her change is PETER and thats what good writing is!

PS: there were a couple of issues exploring Coulson and Juggernaut and I loved both issues, they really show these characters in such great ways focusing on their personality and past but showing the heroes they are and they make the overall story so good and have a pace that will make you appreciate reading them side by side!!

I am really gushing about the story now but suffice to say I loved it so much and needed such kind of story to motivate myself irl and so this story clicks for me and is indeed memorable now and I implore you to read it and find out for yourselves! PS the art is pretty epic by ED MCGUINESS.. he literally kills it with every isses he draws here!

WOW... this Volume was all over the place, but I think that leads to its premise.
Highlights:
- Doom, now Sorcerer Supreme, is responsible for fighting against the Avatars (Children) of Cyttorak in a contest called the Covenant due to his new title. Unlike Strange, who always fought in the contest every year, Doom decides to christen a champion to fight for him because he is too busy. His selection is Spider-Man (PP) who gains magical abilities (and training from Strange, who is not Sorcerer Supreme, but can still help).
- Spidey is put through hell and sacrifices much. But when one of the avatars, Cyra, whose fight is to show Peter pure truth, which is basically that everything dies, but shown 1 by 1 for people that he cares about, gets curious about how he is able to endure so much (3 times as many deaths as Strange ever did!) things begin to change.
- Callix, another avatar, tired of being ignored by Cyttorak, makes a deal with "The Blight", an evil entity who wants to destroy everything. Callix ends up killing Aunt May, Robbie, and several others.
- Spidey trades his resurrection flowers (because each end of an avatar causes him to die as well) to May and the others, knowing his next fight could kill him.
- Cyra gives up her immortality so Peter can live once more after dying. He takes on some of the abilities of Cyttorak (calling himself Spidernaut, like Juggernaut) and helps lead towards the win. Cyttorak himself takes on the Covenant after mourning Cyra's loss.

As this ends the current run (13 Volumes!) I'm anxious to see Spidey get back to more normal stuff. Maybe a brand new villain would be nice too.

Overall, a long, but good read. Recommend.

Better than I expected considering they gave Spider-Man magic which is just dumb. Kelly doesn't even bother to explain how he's suddenly an expert magician, it's just part of accepting this role of fighting Cyttorak's kids. Honestly, that's probably the best you could do in this situation. I thought this would just be 8 issues of watching Spider-Man die and that's how it starts. Thankfully, the focus changes as we get into these 12 issues. (Yeah, there are 2 issues with the asinine names of 65.DEATHS and 68.DEATHS in addition to 65 and 68.) Honestly, halfway through I kind of liked it. It made sense to have the X-Men show up since the Juggernaut is a member now. I did expect Dr. Doom to play more of a role because I thought this was meant to lead into One World Under Doom but he shows up and sprinkles some pixie dust on Spider-Man and peaces out to leave Spidey to his own devices with a ghostly Dr. Strange to mentor him.

This is kind of a weird event/collection, with Spider-Man selected by Dr. Doom to be Earth's champion and fight off the children of Cyttorak? Say what now? To keep "the blight" from reaching and destroying Earth, Dr. Strange made a deal with Cyttorak to keep a "coffin" in place that would protect the Earth and every so often, a champion must fight the children (or scions) of Cyttorak to keep the protective spell in place. And that champion is very likely to die, over and over again, so he or she will have some magic reeds to bring them back to life...You know, as I type this out, it just sounds more and more ridiculous. How this ever made it past Marvel editorial is beyond me. But, anyway, it kind of works, as a way to have Peter confront past mistakes and remember the people he's lost along the way, etc., etc., to kind of set the stage for a new writer and a new beginning. Plus, we get to see the Spider-Naut, a combo of the Juggernaut and Spider-Man, so there's that...

"NO, SORRY... I WAS TRYING TO COME UP WITH AN ELOQUENT WAY TO TELL YOU TO SHOVE IT SINCE YOU USED 'MAGNANIMITY' CORRECTLY IN A SENTENCE, BUT... GET RUSTED YOU TEMU DR. STRANGE KNOCKOFF."
- Spider-man to Doctor Doom (which couldn't possibly end poorly for spidey).

Seriously, another event? What's the point when, like, only one in ten are remotely good?
So, this was an event. Something about Dr. Strange dying and Doctor Doom becoming sorceror supreme of earth who then chooses spidey as his champion to fight the eight scions of Cyttorak or some such nonsense.
While it wasn't quite as bad as Last Remains or Sinister War, it wasn't anything special either. The art of Ed McGuinness and Mark Buckingham is always a plus. Gleb Melnikov's new for me. Good stuff (art-wise).

Spider-Man gets magic and has to fight Cyttorak’s kids because Doom is too lazy to do it himself. Predictably, this goes terribly wrong.

Peter getting magic is a fun concept and there were some good bits in there. None of the art was actually bad but the constant changes in style from swapping out artists was a bizarre choice for a big character event.

Overall, I’m tired of Marvel’s obsession with keeping Peter this manchild fuckup who can’t manage a normal adult life when his fellow heroes are allowed to have relationships, careers, and kids. Really nothing about this story tempted me to go back to reading ASM regularly, just reinforced that I hate this era of Spidey storytelling.

Why do we do anything when we know it won’t matter in a thousand years? What difference do our actions make against the inevitable heat death of the universe?

We all have to find our answers to those questions to go on day after day and, in this volume of the Amazing Spider-Man, so does Peter Parker. And, spoiler alert, it’s not easy or immediate! It’s a great struggle and a great story.

This is one of my favorite volumes of AS-M ever. I laughed, I cried, I savored it over the course of two days.

Art, colors, characters, dialogue, and story are all just exactly what I like in a Spider-Man book. More from Joe Kelly, Justina Ireland, and the rest of this team, please!

The premise of this arc is _awful_: Spider-Man must fight eight crimson foes and die each time. That looked like it was going to be eight issues of dull fist-punching against eight characters that we've never heard of.

But Joe Kelly elevates the story from that premise. He twists around the concept of fighting and turns it into one of Peter's deepest, darkest plunges, while simultaneously focusing on Peter's supporting cast. It's a fine end to the (uneven) volume and a neat story of sorcery, the X-Men, and all the rest.

this was really bad.
I did like Peter reacting poorly to friends and family when his life became stressful as rhay was very real. Just as the forgiveness he receives was real.

way too many issues for this story. it wasn't interesting. the most exciting thing that happened was in the last issue with Spider-Naut.

I like that Peter sought comfort from Felicia. I think I'd like a love triangle or even just Peter to start dating her again for a while.

A bit long winded for my taste. It goes on and on.

You come out of a crossover that you haven't read and aren't brought up to speed on. Doom is the Sorcerer Supreme? Spider-Man is tricked into being a magical avatar? Toss in The X-Men for some unnecessary crossover synergy and you have this book. It didn't totally suck but it isn't anything you'll ever want to read again, either.
