About the author

Arthur Hailey was a British/Canadian novelist. After working at a number of jobs and writing part-time, he became a writer full-time during 1956, encouraged by the success of the CBC television drama, Flight into Danger (in print as Runway Zero Eight ). Following the success of Hotel in 1965, he moved to California; followed by a permanent move to the Bahamas in 1969.

Each of his novels has a different industrial or commercial setting and includes, in addition to dramatic human conflict, carefully researched information about the way that particular environment and system functions and how these affect society and its inhabitants.

Critics often dismissed Hailey's success as the result of a formulaic "potboiler" style, in which he caused an ordinary character to become involved in a crisis, then increased the suspense by switching among multiple related plot lines.

Hailey would spend approximately one year researching a subject, followed by six months reviewing his notes and, finally, about 18 months writing the book.

Many of his books reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and more than 170 million copies have been sold worldwide in 40 languages. Many have been made into movies and Hotel was made into a long-running television series. Airport became a successful film with dramatic visual effects.

A Canadian citizen whose children live in Canada and California, Hailey made his home in Lyford Cay, an exclusive residential resort on New Providence Island in the Bahamas with his second wife Sheila.

In 2002, Hailey told John Marquis, editor of the Bahamas' principal daily newspaper The Tribune, that he was lucky in having supportive parents who encouraged him to believe in himself. Brought up in a working-class home, Hailey never lost the common touch following his phenomenal success. 'I have worked hard, but I have also been very lucky,' he said.

It was still early days in Hailey's writing career and his big blockbusters were yet to come.

This one is about the inner workings of a hospital. The medical research is certainly dated but the major issues of medical ethics and accountability of doctors for wrong decisions are as relevant today as ever.

Doctors can make errors which can have catastrophic consequences for patients. Just such an ageing,obstinate doctor is at the centre of the action. It isn't Hailey's most compelling book but is still a solid medical thriller.

I read it a long time before watching endless episodes of Grey's Anatomy. With a few tweaks here and there,this could actually make for an interesting episode of a TV medical show.

В мене просто серце розривається, бо холодний розум не дає мені поставити максимум.

"Остаточний діагноз" Артура Гейлі - це захоплива виробнича проза, яка з перших сторінок увагу читача не захоплює, але поступово-поступово бере своє, і відірватися стає тяжко.

Автор розповідає про буремне життя шпиталю Трьох Округів. В фокусі оповіді знаходиться чимало персонажів - і мені важко виділити тут головного.

Можливо, Кент О'Доннелл - голова медичної ради лікарні та керівник хірургічного відділення? Автор, напевно, вважав так, але для мене тут протагоністами виступили всі.

Зупинятись на кожному не хочу, але персонажі тут неймовірні.

Медицина - це покликання, сумніви, відповідальність, страждання. Герої книги показують це.

Ця книга - зріз американського суспільства кінця 50-тих, медичної системи та відносин у суспільстві.

Автор, по відчуттям, чудово розібрався в предметі - в тексті знайдеться купа цікавих термінів, описуються всілякі маніпуляції, процеси, штучки-дрючки, які пересічному читачеві невідомі.

І все тут чудово, дійсно.

І любовна лінія присутня. Декілька. І показані вони по-різному - автор наочно показує, чим юнацька закоханість відрізняється від зрілої любові.

Але - настільки гіркого почуття незавершеності після прочитаного в мене давно не було.

Все закінчилось на найцікавішому місці!! Так не можна!

А ще гірше, коли знаєш, що продовження не буде.

Результат: я буду рекомендувати "Остаточний діагноз" Артура Гейлі кожному - ця книга точно варта уваги широкого кола читачів.

reading Arthur Hailey is like swimming in a pool full of pleasant water. His books don't make you think, they make you feel. After reading you have pocketful of emotions and new knowledge.
The Final Diagnosis is the best way to chill out after a hard day or to escape to the world full of other people's troubles and worries from your own. This book shows some aspects of a chief-job, those aspects that sometimes hidden in a bunch of money and power.

I'm simply loving this one. Unable to put down the book. Once you are in to it, you are hooked and the impact is great! This book definitely is different from what i have/ used to read until now. Not the traditional thriller/ fiction types.

It's always been one of my Dad's highly recommended books to me and for some strange reason i had only kept postponing and now, i only wish i had not.

i recommend one to read to know what it takes to run the show in a hospital and you get a perspective on things at the back end. What we get to see is the doctors, nurses, few admin/ clerical ppl but what it is like behind the scenes is truly a revelation, at least to me. I have honestly never thought about hospital administration and politics that might be involved. Overall a good read.

​​Так вийшло, що дочитав цю книжку якраз тоді, коли сам хворію і працюю out of the office (але по відчуттях, зараз якийсь період, що всі хворіють, ні?). Тому стався такий метч — історія про лікарів та хвороби у момент, коли п’єш різні грипекси і міряєш температуру 😷

“Остаточний діагноз” Артура Гейлі — друга книжка, яку я прочитав у цього пана. Десь років 4-5 тому проковтнув “Готель” і отримав насолоду від розумної побудови сюжету, арок персонажів, і загалом було відчуття, ніби це не книжка, а театральна постановка. З “Остаточним діагнозом” відбулось щось схоже, але вже не з таким ефектом, адже літературні смаки та начитаність за ці роки у мене суттєво змінилась. Тепер подібні історії сприймаєш радше як досвідчений стендапер сприймає хороші, але не ідеально-талановито-неочікувані, жарти, типу “так, дуже гарний жарт”, але кажеш це без усмішки, а просто як констатація факту.

Друга половина 20 століття, шпиталь невеличкого містечка переживає зміни та пертурбації. На перше місце виходять інтриги, такі собі “ігри престолів” між завідувачами різних відділень, до цього додається дипломатія, вміння розв'язувати стратегічні питання, а вже на другому плані — пацієнти зі своїми хворобами, життя та смерть, і навіть декілька любовних ліній. Якщо описати кількома словами — то це аналогія на будь-яку ситуацію (в різних масштабах — від сім’ї до країни), в якій консерватизм і небажання розвиватись зіштовхуються з новаторством, реформами та осучасненим підходом до справ. Тому можна обрати будь-якого з персонажів — старомодний патологоанатом Джо Пірсон, просунутий хірург Кент О’Доннел чи хтось інший — і вболівати за них, щоб побачити, хто в кінці переможе (якщо, звісно, хоч якась перемога буде).

🔥 У книжці класно показується внутрішня кухня шпиталів (це фішка Гейлі, який писав виробничі романи, занурюючись і максимально вивчають те, про що пише), підхід до лікування та постановки діагнозів, важливість постійно прогресувати та слідкувати за новими тенденціями у медицині. І не менш цікаво читати про людей, стосунки, внутрішні монологи, деякі з яких виглядають так, ніби до тебе залізли в голову, наскільки все це не застаріло.

Хороша, потужна робота, яка все ж не здивує просунутого читача, але точно не розчарує. Книжка з когорти тих, яку можна взяти у відпустку, і точно не прогадати. Особливо сподобається тим, хто цікавиться медичними драмами та історіями про внутрішні інтриги в професійному середовищі.

Останнім часом забагато було медичної тематики, тому під час читання всі медсцени пропускав, а вони ще й вибрані Гейлі такі, які і не читались би легко. Окей, це написано давно, і на той час це норм, і навіть курити у лікарні там норм. З повчального цікаво поданий один персонаж. Як і будь-де, та й у наш час є такі гамнюки як той Джо - він собі завис, відстав від часу, не цікавиться новинками і через це все, через його уже некомпетентність страждають люди, тому таких точно треба всюди «мінусувати» у першу чергу, хіба вони хочуть вчитися і не лажають, то хай ще працюють :) Тут все про роботу лікарні як вона є, без детективної складової.

В дитинстві я мріяла бути лікарем, а саме - хірургом. Коли ти думаєш про професію лікаря, ти уявляєш собі цю людину, з великої літери «Л», яка рятує людські життя. Такий собі всесильний і всезнаючий лицар в білих обладунках. Але чи все так однозначно? Тільки рятує чи іноді й губить?

Коли я стала мамою, я стикнулася з проблемою: 5 педіатрів і 5 думок! Хто правий? Чия думка вірна?

Книга Хейлі не нова, 1959 року. Класика свого жанру. Хоча я дізналася багато чого нового для себе про роботу медичного закладу.

Більшість серіалів на цю тематику пройшли повз мою увагу, можливо окрім кількох серій «Доктора Хауса». Але цю книгу я би назвала не «Клініка», а «Відділ патологічної анатомії» або просто «Морг».

Як рішення/поведінка/позиція/принципи одного лікаря можуть зачепити роботу всієї клініки? Як помилки одного лікаря можуть занапастити/врятувати життя багатьох людей одночасно? ��се тут.

Навіть не знала скільки функцій виконує патологоанатом... а ви? В моїй уяві вони працюють тільки з мертвими... але ні, вони мають набагато ширше поле діяльності: і мертві, і живі... і ненародженні...

Нещодавно зустрічала патологоанатома. Жінку. Дуже красиву і молоду... Спокійну і впевнену. Легкий макіяж і легка сукня, кінчик якої виглядав з-під чистого білого медичного халату... Але, коли вона іде попереду вас, за нею тягнеться не шлейф парфумів, а солодкуватий... нудотний аромат формальдегіду... і ще чогось... «живого» чи мертвого...

Beautiful. The duration of the story is short, but the author has gone out to give life history of all the main characters.
Captivating. As a medical student there were so many things I could relate to, and I'm sure when I become a doctor the number will only increase.
Touching. I had tears in my eyes, twice.

Above all, this book is a great lesson in understanding people and their actions.

Arthur Hailey brings a great story to readers with this well-crafted novel. In the halls of Three Counties Hospital, located in the heart of Burlington, Pennsylvania, much is going on. A new chairman of the hospital board hopes to pull things out of the Middle Ages with ideas and technological advances. Dr. Kent O’Donnell may have trained at Harvard, but his surgical mind is always up for a challenge, all as he seeks to make a difference. First order of business is handling the long overdue removal of Dr. Joe Pearson, who has remained on his perch in Pathology, dragging the hospital back at a time when it needs to compete with other medical facilities across the country. However, wth the loss of Dr. Pearson will be millions from a benefactor that has made sure to keep the Three Counties doors open. Add to that, other happenings within the halls of the hospital—including births, deaths, and some doctor-nurse drama—are sure to keep the reader devouring this novel by Arthur Hailey, master storyteller on any subject he tackles.

I am still trying to get a handle on the work of Arthur Hailey, but have enjoyed the experience from the outset. While past books have explored many subjects, this one was another great piece, as though Hailey was a regularly medical thriller writer. It builds with a variety of narrative approaches, handling things from all perspectives of hospital life. Momentum gains traction with each chapter, as the reader learns a great deal and sees things develop in less than traditional ways. This was another great piece that kept me eager to see what else Arthur Hailey might have in store for me, as I make my way through his collection of novels.

Characters are well-placed, as their backstories connect with ongoing development. Readers are treated to a variety of personalities, allowing them to see all moving parts or focus on a single one of their own interest. Many characters are able to push the plot along while flavouring the piece with their respective layers, medical and otherwise. Hailey knows how to develop a cast that will impact and interest the reader with ease, allowing stunning happenings to keep things edgy.

Surprises are core in a thriller, as they create an entertaining foundation. While the reader can see certain things beforehand, twists add something more to the reading experience, while also proving entertaining. Providing unpredictable aspects for the reader to ponder, the reading experience becomes all the more focused in the fast-paced hallways of a medical facility. Hailey keeps the tension growing until things are revealed and truth shines light on all that is taking place. The reader waits to see what’s coming, only to be offered a brilliant thriller that has wonderfully unexpected portions. Arthur Hailey fans, new and old alike, will be kept flipping pages well into the night.

Kudos, Mr. Hailey, for another strong piece that is as sharp as a new scalpel.

Being a doctor myself who works with the laboratories in the hospitals there was not one thing I could not relate to with the issues that happen in the story.A point for Dr. Pearson's advice to Dr. Coleman in the end, very practical stuff. However it is very medically written therefore not everyone may get the flow.

UPD: Susiradau romaną originalo kalba ir apšalau – jau pirmuosiuose dviejuose puslapiuose radau tokius svarbius neatitikimus: skirtingai suskaidyta pastraipomis, vietomis sukeisti sakiniai, dalies teksto išvis nėra... Supratau, kad skaičiau ne Arthur'ą Hailey, o per daug laisvą Arthur'o Hailey interpretaciją.

Vienas pirmųjų (arba tiesiai šviesiai – antras, 1959 m.) Arthur'o Hailey'o romanas. Autoriaus, kuris knygą rašydavo 3 metus: vienerius skirdavo medžiagos rinkimui, pusę – užrašų peržiūrėjimui, pusantrų – rašymui. Autoriaus, kurį nelabai vertino kritikai ir kuris pats neturėjo didelių literatūrinių pretenzijų. Tačiau kuris mokėjo pasakoti.

"Galutinė diagnozė" – pasakojimas apie 6-ojo dešimtmečio ligoninę JAV per patologoanatomijos skyriaus darbą:
• gyvenimiškas: nuolatinės dilemos darbe ir asmeniniame fronte – meilės, santykiai, pasirinkimai, teisingi sprendimai ir skaudžios mirtys.
• įtempto siužeto: autorius taip užkabina, kad kaip trileryje sekiau, kaip pasiseks Vivjenai Loberton bei Džono Aleksanderio naujagimiui, ar sanitarijos inspekcija uždarys ligoninę.
• Lengvas, netuščias, intensyvus, su aiškia pradžia ir pabaiga. Ir moralu, kad negalima atsilikti nuo gyvenimo, nes kartais už pasyvumą tenka sumokėti pernelyg didelę kainą.

Sąlyginai trumpame romane (3-4 valandos skaitymo) visko daug: įvykių, emocijų. Vertinant objektyviai galima rasti priekaištų, tačiau klasikiniu būdu puikiai papasakota istorija labai pradžiugina po modernių sprendimų, užsuktų ir ištemptų tekstų, prasmių ir mįslių.

Pet zvezdica dajem isključivo jer sam vrlo pristrasan na knjige ovakve sadržine, budući da se radi o mojoj struci. Literarno, međutim, ovaj roman ne bih svrstao u sam vrh književnih dostignuća (kao što su, recimo Garidov "Čitač leševa", Goldstounova "Anatomija obmane" ili Gordonov veličanstveni "Medicus") jer su radnja i likovi u mnogome nerazrađeni i površni. Više me stilski i konstrukcijski podseća na dobar esej, ili na neki od dnevnika kliničke prakse koje vode stažisti u bolnicama nego na roman per se. Međutim, meni su Haileyeve rečenice veoma držale pažnju. Iako se roman prostire na preko 400 strana, čita se za dva dana, jer ne dopušta ni preskakanja, niti vremena da se predahne. Ono što me posebno porazilo, jeste činjenica da je zdravstveni sistem u mnogim krajevima naše zemlje i dalje ostao na ovom stupnju razvoja (a roman je objavljen 1959. godine). Hailey ushićeno opisuje detaljno određene hirurške, patomorfološke i eksperimentalne metode koje su bile epohalne za to vreme. Međutim, tužna je činjenica da sam ja o tim metodama, dok sam pohađao osnovne studije, učio kao o najsavremenije primenjivanim, iako su u razvijenim zemljama napuštene pre više od 15 godina. Dakle, naš program studiranja se nije mnogo menjao, a udžbenici starih profesora se i dalje koriste u nastavi, iako su poodavno zastareli i veći deo gradiva koji nude bi se danas moglo podvesti pod poglavlje "Istorija medicine". Ta činjenica me potpuno obeshrabri svaki put. Ono što je večita tema jesu međuljudski odnosi u kolektivima gde postoji izražena smena generacija i izražen generacijski jaz. To smo iskusili svi koji smo prošli kroz klinike fakulteta: da je većina starijih profesora ogrezla u sujeti i da su toliko gordi da ne žele da priznaju grešku koju su počinili, čak i po cenu da je ona kobna za određenog pacijenta. Tako je i sa načelnikom Patologije u ovom romanu. Prevideo je opasnost od razvijanja eritroblastoze kod jednog novorođenčeta, samo zato što mu ponos nije dopustio da mlađem kolegi dozvoli da primeni (za to vreme) savremeniji i senzitivniji laboratorijski test. Takođe - vođenje laboratorijskog protokola kod tog specijaliste, praktično, nije postojalo, a to je conditio sine qua non dobre laboratorijske prakse. Tako nešto se može i danas sresti u nekim bolnicama. Nažalost. Sve u svemu - ovaj roman me je vrlo setno vratio u studentske dane kada smo nekritički upijali lekcije koje su nam predavali oni za koje smo mislili da su nedostižni; a zapravo - sa današnje distance i mog skoro decenijskog radnog iskustva - sada sam svestan da je većinu tih "nedostižnih" vreme odavno pregazilo.

This was an extremely easy book to read, and yes medical facts in here are outdated, but the theme and human relationships are universal. This is not a type of book that thesis and essays will be based but still it will somehow always find a way to a reader. It's a pretty lighthearted book despite it deals with sickness and deaths, at least for me it was. And although I'm not really completely head over heels mad for the book I think it's really good and it gave me a couple of enjoyable hours of reading.

"Right" and "wrong" are fuzzy in the field of medicine. How lives can be made, or shattered, by a single decision! How much can depend on a single test! How dramatic the consequences of one diagnosis can be!

A story through the lens of a pathology lab, this had me riveted. We don't quite value pathologists enough, always reserving our praise for the kind physicians and fancy surgeons. This should change. A great read!

Истински талант и майсторски разказ за ежедневието в една болница, ежедневните проблеми, с които се сблъскват работещите там и чисто човешките отношения помежду им. Дори медицинските детайли са поднесени по завладяващ начин. Обичам да чета тези стари книги, написани от автори от "старата школа", съвсем друго ниво са, много ясно усещаш добрата литература и таланта, вместо технически издържаното писане на много съвременни автори, които следват една "печеливша" формула, но в писането им няма душа.

📖Если честно, это вообще первая книга Артура Хейли, которую я прочитала.
✅Эта книга - чуть ли не единственная посвящена работе врачей-патологов и лаборантов, осуществляющих диагностический процесс в лаборатории больниц🔬
✅ В основе ее сюжета несколько сложных диагностических случаев. Например, девушка с опухолью в ноге. Часть врачей считают опухоль доброкачественной, а часть врачей - злокачественной. И от окончательного диагноза зависит сохранит ли девушка ногу. Сохранит ли она в принципе жизнь.
✅ цитата из книги: «Патологоанатом - это врач, которого пациент почти не видит. Но ни одно из отделений больницы не играет такой роли в судьбе больного как наше. Патанатомия исследует срезы тканей и даёт окончательное заключение. Исходя из этих данных, лечащий врач делает назначение больному. А когда все медицинские средства бессильны - именно патологоанатом устанавливает окончательный диагноз.»
✅Необычно развивается сюжет. В первой половине книги - почти ничего не происходит. В второй- события развиваются стремительно и приходят в вполне жизненным финалам. Никаких чудесных хэппиэндов 🚫.

Three Counties Hospital’s best days are gone and it is being threatened by the inability of its leaders to change and face new challenges. This is largely because of the conflict between two groups of physicians, the reformers and those who want to stick with the status quo.

At the center of the conflict is Dr. Joseph Pearson, a sixty-six year old pathologist who is obstinate, opinionated, brilliant but resistant to change. A number of tragic events have occurred: negligent cases with one common theme – faulty reports from the pathology lab. Dr. Pearson steadfastly refuses to see the light, but is eventually convinced to accept an assistant pathologist.

A younger man is brought in against his will, to assist the chief. The new assistant is an outstanding doctor, but their personalities clash and eventually the new recruit takes over the lab. As he cleans out his desk at the turnover meeting, Pearson says that anyone who is young and embraces change eventually becomes old and disapproves of it. An interesting observation, which has remarkable validity.

In the context of the swirling conflict, the novel focuses on two principle cases: a student nurse with a possible malignant bone tumour who may lose her leg, and an infant with a potentially incompatible Rh factor that may result in death. The two physicians disagree and argue about the diagnosis in both cases.

Like Hailey’s other novels, the context of this story is grounded in impeccable research. The details surrounding hospital life at the time are abundant and accurate, leading credence to a fictional tale that could easily have been reality.

A very readable story and an entertaining book, which at times was difficult to put down.

Another medical fiction beautifully written.
The final diagnosis takes the reader on the journey of the lives inside the hospitals which include not only the doctors but also the nurses, technicians and the administrative staff.

Set in a time,which in comparison to the present day medical field, can be called outdated, yet it portrays very vividly of what goes on in a hospital, the truckload of work involved and the struggle of the patients as well as the doctors.

The book, i found primarily focused on the need to be updated in case of medicine and being a medico myself i second this thought. The title remains justified, as back then THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS was given by the pathology department, and any error on their part could cause havoc in a perfectly normal prognosis, something which could have been handled in a better way ensuring survival or protection of the patients.

The various characters through their own parts reinforce the dignity and the responsibility which the people of the medical field ought to have. Though medicine has advanced a lot yet the politics, superiority complex of the seniors or experienced, the incapability to adapt to the changes outside or in their domain still remains,till the day something unfortunate happens.

Truly, a page turner with many medical procedures written in a way that is easily understood even by the lay people with a dignified ending which couldn't have been anything else with an intact conscience which a doctor should have.

With the amount of hype with which I started reading this book I thought I would never keep down this book. But instead, I found it hard to take the book again and turn the pages to the page I read last and then continue reading. So I asked the people who instilled this false hype in me whether they read this particular book. And then I came to know the bizarre truth. They haven't read this particular book but they have read another one of the same author.

The books starts at a snail's pace. I thought it couldn't get any worse. I was proved right. But the book didn't pick up pace once there was a clear view on where this story is heading. It might have shifted from first to the second gear and huffed and puffed till the end.

There are a lot of medical terms that a layman isn't aware of. But to a large extent Mr Hailey took the pain to explain most of it. So you wouldn't feel completely at sea. Because of all these unknown medical terms I felt like I was reading the book version of the popular series Dr. House but with less humor, less sarcasm and less lot of other good qualities.

I don't know what else I should include here because this plot has a potential to strike gold but the author spurned the chance. Goodreads should seriously consider providing users with the option to give half a star. This deserved a 3.5 stars and since there was no option I had to give 3 stars (it wasn't a sort of book which one would give 4 stars even though it's worth only 3.5).

Книга на 100% в стиле Хейли - уже не помню, когда читала его в последний раз, а почерк автора узнаётся мгновенно. Хотя здесь, пожалуй, нет такого напряжения, как, к примеру, в "Отеле" - там обстановка явно нагнетается с каждой главой, и, хотя подведение к кульминации очень аккуратное, всё равно с самого начала понимаешь, что ничего хорошего там не случится. Здесь повествование более ровное, хотя драмы тоже хватает.
Трудновато читается в начале: чувство такое, как будто тебя швырнули в толпу незнакомых людей. Они называют имена, а ты забываешь их в ту же секунду, просто потому, что их слишком много. В итоге читаешь и постоянно спотыкаешься в окружении Кентов, Джо, Джонов и Дэвидов, судорожно вспоминая, кто из них главный хирург, кто патологоанатом, а кто лаборант. И путаться перестаёшь далеко не сразу.
В целом, наверно, не самая сильная книга у Хейли, но всё равно неплохо.

i enjoyed the medical portions of the book. i thought reading about the inner and political workings of a hospital was very interesting. i thought the "love affairs" were totally ridiculous. i can't imagine anyone buys the story that people who see each other for a second time are in love and want to get married.

Gripping Novel

Fast paced story with extremely interesting characters woven into realistic episodes. Descriptions are so vivid one can actually visualise things happening in front of your eyes. Author must have done a lot of research. Highly enjoyable book with a feel good factor.

Читання приносить емоції - для мене не важливий їх характер, важлива наявність. Інколи це непередбачувані переходи з достатньою амплітудою та частотою. Може бути резонанс чи повільне наростання почуттів. У випадку “Остаточного діагнозу” це гіпербола з катарсисом.

Перший мною прочитаний роман Гейлі - це “Аеропорт”. Починаються вони однаково: опис занурює читачів в тематику романів за перші двадцять сторінок. Неймовірне задоволення приносить увага до тематичних деталей у текстах Гейлі, але в “Аеропорті” цього може бути забагато. Інша справа “Остаточний діагноз” - тут більше уваги надається персонажам.

Живі люди замість функцій

Персонажі Гейлі в цьому романі не просто носії сюжету - вони дихають. Кожен має свою внутрішню логіку, свої суперечності, свою ціну за рішення. Створюється екосистема лікарні, де кожна людина несе свій тягар, свої страхи, свої компроміси. Розумієш логіку кожного персонажа, навіть коли не погоджуєшся з їхніми виборами. Це робить конфлікти не абстрактними, а болісно реальними.

Коли читаєш про лікаря, який стоїть перед вибором між кар'єрою і совістю, це не моральна притча - це спостереження за живою людиною в пастці обставин. Коли бачиш, як помилка веде до трагедії, це не драматизація заради ефекту - це механізм, який Гейлі терпляче і точно збирає на твоїх очах. Ці люди живуть поза сторінками роману, і саме це змушує історію оживати.

Емоційність

Останні три сторінки викликають особливо бурхливі відчуття. Після всього напруження, після всіх моральних дилем, Гейлі дає катарсис, який не є ані солодким, ані спрощеним. I am a big fan of medical thrillers .. I have been a long time fan of Robin Cook. I went into this expecting that sort of vibe but that's not quite what I got. I think the story was okay, I loved that it called out some of the internal hospital issues but struggled with the way females were presented in this book. I had to remind myself this book was published many years ago during a very different time and it does ring true to that era, so I won't fault it too much.

I think the narrator was solid and his voice matched this sort of book.
