The best book on Bukowski by a man who knew him---but was NOT a 'follower' of Buk's. Also the best overview of the small press revolution of the 1960s-1970s. Great insight into the small press life.
"The Holy Grail: Charles Bukowski And The Second Coming Revolution" is an important look into the relationship between North Beach legend, A.D. Winans, and the great Charles Bukowski. The read, however, doesn't stop at these two literary giants; there is also Winans' heart of SF and his other love, Second Coming Press. One cannot forget about those key figures buzzing on the outskirts of Ferlinghetti's Time Magazine troupe of well known Beatniks that helped make Second Coming what it was...Bob Kaufman, Jack Micheline, Kell Robertson and the "meat poets," Douglas Blazek, William Wantling, and of course, Buk himself.
In my opinion, Second Coming championed all the very best of the Beats, and especially those post-Beatnik poets who continue to pave the way for today's small press revolution.
Enjoyed learning about Winans as a poet and publisher of Second Coming, his small press poetry magazine, as well as his relationship with Charles Bukowski. I think he writes about Bukowski as a writer he admires, without fawning over him, therefore writing about him as a real human being. Really enjoyed reading this.
Winans has always been a great writer and in his position and history, not too many in a better place to write a good book on a great man. Recommended!
