I have spent about a year slowly reading through Reading Korean Culture Through Hallyu. I picked up this book in Kyobo during my second trip to Seoul in October 2024. It is a book aimed at intermediate Korean language learners and features 40 mini essays (3 pages each) introducing an aspect of Korean culture as seen in K-drama, K-pop etc. For example it looks at dining preferences and pastimes, and even answers the question 'Why do Korean zombies run so fast?'. Each essay features a small glossary for potentially more difficult words and there are cute cartoons for each chapter. I think the suggestion that this is for intermediate learners is about right. There is no English translation in the book to help a beginner (other than those small glossaries) and the language assumes a knowledge of a reasonable amount of vocabulary and grammar. As a low-intermediate student, I found I could follow the essays in general, but I did need to check some words. In terms of the content, it would certainly be interesting for those who want to know more about Korean popular culture. All up, this book would be a fine place to start for low-intermediate learners and above who are just getting into reading in Korean and are ready to step away from parallel/bilingual texts for the first time. The essays can each be read in a single sitting, so it's easy to dip in and out of this book as and when you have time to study. I am giving it 4.5 stars. For those who have been interested in Korea for a while, most of the information in these essays will not be completely new, but it is certainly a very good and easily approachable study tool.
