Hundr, the man with the dog's name, a fearsome sea jarl and his lifelong friend, Einar the Brawler meet one last time for an epic confrontation with Finn, the crippled king of Man. This is a religious battle between the followers of Odin and an army in thrall to the trickster god, Loki. Throw in, for good measure, the fearsome Valkeries, Christian warriors and Vikings of every persuasion and you have the ultimate battle fest. A story of many twists and turns, with countless shield wall battles, brutal combat and the loss of friends. A real edge of your seat, page turner of a story. Death with honour, the ultimate goal of warriors during the Dark Ages.
From start to finish the journey of a boy with a dogs name to a valiant fighter. The story has its twists and turns. Battles fought won and lost. Friends and family sent to the A L Father leaving sadness , hatred and vengeance. It had it all. Peter Gibbons is a gifted story teller. In the way of Bernard Cornwell . I highly recommend the series and thank Peter for allowing as an ardent reader the opportunity to ride the sadness, happiness, intrigue and above a series when I begged for more. Well done
Good to see the crew back together. I deducted one star however because I found that in this book, the author often got weighted down in descriptive narrative. I appreciate the surroundings required to get a good overview of a situation or a battlefield, but down to the last blade of grass? It was almost as if he were padding the word count. (No - authors don’t do that, do they?) I can highly recommend this series.
This series is so well written with well developed characters that feel like old friends and fantastic Viking stories. This one was one of my favourites, the pace was fast and didn’t lag at all, it kept me reading as I just had to find out what happened. There were a few times I thought we might lose one of our ‘friends’ and it was nail biting and full of adventure. Would definitely recommend if you like well crafted tales of Viking times.
The who!e way through this book it felt like it was building to a big crescendo and I fully expected it to be the finale for Hundr, Einar, Hildr and many other characters. It felt like the Magnificent Seven or the Dirty Dozen as the army of old warriors was out together. I expected the last battlefield to be strewn with our heroes bodies.........but it wasn't and the fact they all live mean we can anticipate yet another instalment. First class story telling as always from Peter Gibbons albeit with a big feint and a possible last minute change of mind.
Amazing series. Total nail biting rollercoaster. Brought me back to my teenage years being fascinated by the Viking era. The historical context was fascinating. I was so wrapped up in the characterisation that I frequently found myself laughing, wincing and telling Hundr and Einar off when they made errors of judgement in battles. Just sorry to say goodbye to them at the end of the 10th enthralling book!
Such a magnificent series of books. Each a saga in their own right. I feel I was a part of every story, and certainly lived and breathed every story. Breathtakingly powerful books, a brilliant read, and a testament to life in the Viking age. Incredible writing Peter, thank you.
If you live exciting reads this serious if ten books is one for you. I couldn’t stop reading each book almost as if the books were mere chapters in one book. Trust me you have to read this series. It will keep you up reading late into the night.
There's really no reason to review his books. They're all awesome! This is by far the best of the series. There's so much that happens in the book that any fan will definitely be pleased.
What a story! Peter Gibbons is a great storyteller. I've never been disappointed, generally amazed. Its like standing in the shield wall yourself, or raising the sail on a longship. He brings that world to life like very few can. A great series!! 5 star every review.
As with ALL the books in this series your kept guessing, just gripping from beginning to end. Very detailed in battle scenes, just keep your head down and away from the Viking axes flying around. Great books for a television series.
The most amazing of all of the sagas, as our beloved heroes rise from the deepest adversity to avenge their suffering against the Loki worshippers!!! Impossible to put aside 😉
From start to finish this book was all go, b*lls to the walls. One of the best books of the series & I hope it will not be the final book in this series.
The 10th book by no means diminishes as the story evolves, turns and continues along the whale road…breathing a second life into the embers of Hundr’s story
