I love My Little Ponies. They never disappoint and this one had pirates so that just made it even better. The art in these are always amazing. The stories were great too!

I feel like I'm deducting more stars than I should, mostly because I feel like an old fart reading this. That is, should I hand this to a younger reader in my circle, she will most likely LOVE it, but I find myself scratching my head over it. I think mostly because I know the main (mane??) characters more from parody than from having actually watched the show (I have not, except an episode that had Pony Doctor Who, out of a morbid curiosity).

Thing is, the art style in the graphic novels* feels at times like it more closely resembles the parody than the official style, which is slightly jarring to me, so the aforementioned younger reader wouldn't think of that (or so I'd hope), while I end up remembering some scenes from the parody and having less than flattering thoughts on the matter.

Also, this volume in specific features Fluttershy being particularly... off. I don't know how flutter or shy she normally is, but her hyperfixation on Gil is *really weird* to me, as an effectively new reader.

The second story reminds me a lot of Whoever Steals This Book, since . It's interesting, though also REALLY WEIRD (which makes it a good story for younger readers, I think!).

On the whole, I feel like *other* readers will like this more than I did. Can't vouch for them, though, only for myself.

*which I now notice I have not left a review for the other one I read but neither remember which one it was nor what I thought about it to write a placeholder review for it NOW

The pirate story line was disappointing. It didn't really take full advantage of pirates or the main 6. The bookworm story line played homage to lots of different genres which I loved, but I couldn't really enjoy this story either. On the whole this book was kinda weak.

Cute as always. Didn't fully enjoy these story lines as much as other from the past volumes but definitely going to continue reading the next volumes in the series.

Very thrilling and dramatic! I was on my toes the entire time. The stories keep getting crazier and cooler!

My girl (and boy) loved it!

Because it’s my daughter’s favorite show’s characters. Had so much fun reading on kindle each night together. So funny. Chow

Another solid entertaining volume for this series but nothing really stood out. There was no truly epic story like the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Volume 1 or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Volume 2. The jokes and references didn't reach the heights of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Volume 3.

Like Volume 3, Volume 4 is split evenly between two stories, each two issues long.

The first story features the Mane 6 joining a pirate on his quest for a beloved jewel. Overall this story was kind of weak and wound up being akin to a Rocky and Bullwinkle pun punchline ending. There were some entertaining moments and jokes along the way, though. Fluttershy provides the impetus for the story but as usual she ends up sticking to the sidelines. Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie wind up shining the brightest and make the most out of the pirate gimmick.

The second story has the Mane 6 venturing into story books to combat a malevolent bookworm. Much like Twilight Sparkle's story in My Little Pony: Pony Tales Volume 1 there are several amusing literary references and jokes. Overall the story was entertaining but moved way too fast to fully enjoy the parodies.

While I appreciate packing tons of content into each issue, which is the opposite of the stretched out story arcs found in most superhero comics, often there can be too much stuffed into a single story. Hence I enjoy the less story driven tales found in Volume 3 and Pony Tales or the longer arcs found in Volumes 1 and 2.

The art remains fantastic. Each story has a different illustrator with the same writer. It's always interesting to see the similarities and differences between each artist's interpretation of the ponies. The same happens with superhero comics as well, but the change in styles is much less jarring in MLP which helps build continuity between story arcs and the TV series.

While some of the stories in previous comics in this series make sense and are charming, the two stories in this volume were weak and uninspiring. The Mane 6 join a pirate crew for absolutely no reason except the artist felt like drawing pirates that day, I guess? The ponies act out-of-character often and randomly decide to mutiny instead of, like, actually talking to the captain or something frienship-y like that. We get random jokes in the background that make no sense and get no explanation (why were Granny Smith and Big Mac in the pirate den selling apples? Why did the gang not see them?) The whole pirate thing felt like a fan comic and not a story that belonged in the real MLP universe.

The second story was better, but also bland. It was mostly a parody of various book series and an excuse to draw some book villains 'coming to life' in Ponyville (which could have been awesome but was barely explored at all). The wrap-up at the end seemed rushed.

Disappointing on all accounts, for me. Unless the stories have more effort put into them, I don't think I will continue reading this comic series.

The pirate story line was my least favorite so far. I did call the Goonies reference, though. I would have much preferred the plot for the second half slowed down and spread out over the whole four issues. The Voldermort pony was awesome, and in general it was a fun idea to have the ponies moving through the stories. I would have liked to see more of that, more of the characters chaos back in Ponyville, and more of the story the characters in the book choose to write.

Meh, it wasn't good. These are the worst comics yet of the series. This writer does not do the show justice. Hopefully a better writing team will come and make the next one better. (Andy Price though is a God when it comes to drawing these fluffy pink ponies)

Serierna är verkligen jättefint ritade. Varje tecknare som gör den här serien har sin egen stil och jag älskar hur ponnyerna inte ser likadana ut hela tiden.
Det här albumet innehöll två historier, varav den andra var lite bättre än den första.

Good, but not my fave. I didn't really care for the pirate story, which is sad because I love pirates. I liked the bookworm section where the ponies went through different genres of books, but I thought they could have done more with that idea.

The mane 6 went on a sea adventure in the first two parter. In the second two parter, the mane six went into different genres of books to battle the "book worm". A little too silly for my taste with little interesting points.
