TRIGGER This book contains explicit content of a very dark nature. Reader discretion is advised. This is not for the faint of heart.
Anna J. started writing as a child, creating short stories in her creative writing classes. This later turned into writing poetry in high school. In her early twenties she entered a short story contest, and her first work of fiction "Stories To Excite You: Menage Quad" was published. Always an avid reader, Anna J. saw a void in the industry. The types of books she wanted to read hadn't been written yet. With that in mind, she penned her first book "My Woman His Wife", published in 2004, which quickly became an Essence Magazine best seller. Anna J went on to pen 12 novels. She also participated in 9 short story compilations, and self-published 9 works of fiction. Anna J. Is currently at work on future releases.
This was my first book by Anna J and I had no idea what to expect at all. The first chapter was all spicy then it got dark. It got disturbing if we are being honest.
This was a dark thriller book that you don’t want to put down. You will be so interested in how this story will play out.
Dylan is the definition of unhinged! He seems to have it all together being this rich chef /restaurant owner but he has this dark evil side too.
There were parts that were repetitive and going in circles. This book will take you for a ride and let’s not even talk about . The ending will leave your mouth wide open! There will be a book 2 I’m assuming lol
Let just say you might want to re think one night stands and flirting with random men. Just because he fine and handsome doesn’t mean he’s a good man.
5 ⭐️ | The city of Brotherly Love was NOT ready for Dylan Hunt. Dylan’s path of destruction leaves the city of Philly in turmoil, yet readers will still find him as a likable character. This book was very engaging! Unputdownable, as you will not want to stop reading until you see how Dylan’s story plays out. And the level of delusion, as he convinced himself his actions were for the greater good was out of this world! Several smh.. & wtf moments.
Life is great for Dylan! He finds a way to deal with his “issues,” opens up a brand new restaurant that has hit the ground running, loves his family, what more can a 23 year old, successful attractive male ask for right? Until he crosses the wrong person that is hellbent on revenge for a heinous act that Dylan did toward her family. Heather, the leader of an all female special victims unit, will stop at nothing to get her revenge. And the measures she’s willing to take to make this happen, leaves you speechless!
If you’re looking for something to keep your attention, mixed with some spice, mixed with some thriller, this is it! Highly recommend
This was a different type of genre that I have read by Anna J. The hunt was thiller that reminded me of the criminal show the first 48. So I know I had to brace myself for this one. Dylan the owner of a restaurant in Philly and a lunatic when he not working . He definitely has 2 personalities. He has the women thinking his this loving person. I had a love hate relationship for him. The detectives are on to him but who is the actual serial killer is the question. Buckle your seat because you are in for a wild ride.
I cant stand Dylan funky behind! 🤣 He could have been a comedian in another life. This was unhinged madness and I ate it up! He kept fighting those demons but they were winning. If you like a dark thriller with a little cat and mouse action gone head and dive into this one. Oh and those epilogues...honeyyyyy!! Let me download the 2nd book!
Prime example of " Not everything that looks good is good for you" !!! Dylan Hunt, a 23 year old successful owner and Chef of "Noire", a Jamaican and Asian fusion restaurant is every woman's dream, but unknowingly their worst nightmare. This book was definitely a page turner and sucked me right in from the very beginning! It had just the right amount of drama and suspense. Highly Recommend! 5 stars!!!
THIS BOOK HAD ME HOOKED ! I couldn’t put it down and was mad when i had to. Dylan was something else . I don’t want to tell to much so please read it !! I need somebody to talk to about it lol
While I did like certain parts of the story and the small cliffhanger, the flow of the story was a little off to me. The storyline seemed to pick up around 40% . I do feel like Dylan and his family background should have been added at the beginning of the story and not in the epilogue.
I was curious bout bodies fitting in trash bags and Dylan having sex on tarp 🤔 that didn’t make sense to me at all.
This did give me Law & Order vibes and Im curious who else has been killing women cause I don’t see Dylan killing 13 women by himself . Now the part bout his daddy took me OUT!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2. The Hunt is the perfect title for this piece! I normally don’t enjoy reading erotica, but I gave it a try as part of book of the month. Too much spice for me, it became too redundant for my taste. I wish I had known the family dynamic from the beginning, that definitely could have been explored more to help shape the protagonist development. We would understand Dylan and his actions better. What happened to the baker? Did I miss it? Overall, I enjoyed my first book by Anna J. Give it a read if you’re a thriller and erotica fan!
“The Hunt” by Anna J. is a gripping thriller that captivates from the very first page. Dylan Hunt's journey is one of both flight and confrontation—running from a past that refuses to stay buried while uncovering a dangerous fetish that threatens to unravel the very fabric of his life.
What I found particularly compelling is how the narrative delves into the uncomfortable truths of trust and attraction, exploring how easily we can become ensnared by the allure of new environments and attractive strangers. Anna J. masterfully illustrates that what happens in the shadows can indeed come to light, forcing characters (and readers) to confront their realities.
The character development is stellar; Dylan and those around him feel both familiar and dangerous, adding layers of intrigue to the plot. The twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat, making it hard to put the book down.
If you're looking for a thriller that challenges the norms and immerses you in a world that feels strikingly real yet tantalizingly mysterious, “The Hunt” is the perfect escape. Prepare to be drawn into a story where desire meets danger, and trust can be a fatal mistake. Highly recommend for anyone who loves a sexy twist in their mystery.
A Heart-Pounding Thriller That Will Shock You, Move You, and Keep You Up All Night
Book Review: The Hunt by Anna J
Wow. The Hunt by Anna J isn’t just a thriller—it’s a full-body experience. From the first page, I felt like I had been dropped straight into the heart of this nightmare, running alongside the characters, heart pounding, breath short.
The premise is terrifying: a group of women is kidnapped and thrown into a deadly game where they’re the prey. But what sets this book apart is how human these women feel. They’re not just characters in a survival story—they’re fighters, friends, and sometimes even foes, each carrying their own scars and secrets. You don’t just root for them; you feel for them. And that’s what makes every moment so intense.
Anna J knows exactly how to build suspense—just when you think you’ve caught your breath, she yanks the ground out from under you. And the twist? I did not see that coming. It’s one of those moments where you actually have to put the book down for a second just to process what just happened.
But beyond the action and adrenaline, what really stuck with me was the emotional depth. This isn’t just a story about survival—it’s about resilience, sisterhood, and taking back power. It made me think about what people are capable of when they’re pushed to their limits, and how strength comes in so many different forms.
If you love thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat and hit you right in the gut emotionally, The Hunt is one you won’t forget. Just be ready—you’re in for one hell of a ride.
Dylan Hunt is living his best life right now. He is smart, sexy, and owns the hottest restaurant in Philly. But Dylan is trying to escape his dark past. He seems to be on the right path but how long will that last? Detective Heather Butler and her crew of female special victims unit detectives are trying to solve a series of horrific crimes. There is a man that is snatching women off of the street and they need to catch him fast. But how far will Heather and her crew go to catch this killer?
Anna J gives us the eroticism that she’s known for but with a psychological thriller twist with The Hunt. She does a good job of presenting the reader with an age old dilemma of which path do you choose? Do you do things the normal right way or do you choose a darker path that will still give you satisfying results? This book does features some very dark themes so readers beware and get ready for a wild story. Erotica, murder, and mayhem is what you’ll find in The Hunt. Readers will be eagerly looking forward to the next installment.
3.75 - Thank you Pretty Girls Do Read and Anna J for my arc. First read by this author.
WOW! The ending epilogues had me side-eyeing and shocked a little bit. Honey, we were getting into something with the parents that I kind of wish was more in the story. What they had to say was interesting. So some stuff could have been moved around or cut to give us more of the parents’ POV with their kids growing up until the present day. Trust, Dylan just didn’t get his urges from nowhere. It sucked that he was such a successful businessman but a piece of work as we explored his mind.
However, it seems he wasn’t alone. I kind of made up my mind about who the other one is . Those detectives wanted vengeance and to get their lick back for all the women. I applaud them because I would have been on that man’s top too. Was “justice” truly served 👀 ? This was an overall good psychological thriller. Worth checking it out.
Dylan Hunt had issues. He knew it. He had a hunger that surpassed tasting the food in his popular restaurant. He had a weakness for beautiful women that was so intense that sometimes he actually TRIED to stay away from them. However, when the women were determined to play his game, he couldn't resist. This guy was something else. What had me compelled was the fact that HE KNEW he was a problem. But he wasn't the only one! I'm a romance fanatic at heart, but books like THIS ONE have me tiptoeing over to the dark side! I'm jumping right on to the next one. Awesome job, Anna J!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Anna J came out swinging. This book will take you on a ride. The characters are likeable but also unhinged asking yourself why the hell am I in cahoots with them lol! If you’re an Anna J fan this book is a love letter to you welcoming you back into her fold. If you are new to Anna J this book will surely convert you. It shows you how she’s willing to stretch herself for the love her readers. The book possesses all the things. If you love thriller, suspense , comedy this book has it all! You’ll find yourself engulfed holding your breathe questioning everything you think you know the whole time! And bonus if your from Philly you’ll be engrossed in following characters around the city! I highly recommend this book if your looking for an entertaining escape this is for you!
The way this book had me on edge of my seat the entire time ought to be a crime! Dylan…CHILEEEE…You sir are something else. I’m just at a loss for words. At 23 you had an amazing life but your thoughts were a whole other story. Heather and Morgan you stepped in just in time. I definitely wanted more. What’s next for them?!?!
Wow!!!! This was good story and thrilling through and through. The collaboration to get justice was so shocking I didn’t see it coming. The story gave just enough to have you in suspense and I enjoyed the ending.
The book was good. I enjoyed everything about it. All I have to say is karma is something. Dylan got his. I thought Heather was a little psycho but I understand why she is the way she is. I also understand why Dylan’s parents did what they did.
The Hunt by Anna J is a fast-paced thriller that keeps you hooked as you follow Detective Heather’s relentless pursuit of vengeance for her sister. Dylan is a fascinating character—charming on the surface but dangerously unhinged underneath. His journey is gripping, and it’s hard to put the book down because you want to see how his story unfolds.
That said, the ending felt a bit rushed. Given Dylan’s intelligence and ability to manipulate situations, I expected him to anticipate something instead of being caught off guard. And who was the second killer? The final lines seemed to hint at an answer, but I would have loved a clearer reveal.
Overall, this was an intense and engaging read, just missing that extra layer of depth in the conclusion. Still, highly recommend if you love psychological thrillers with a side of mystery!
I'm so glad Anna J. is playing with the pen again. The way she manipulated this here book is nothing short of the Anna J we all know and love.
This guy Dylan however...inhale, exhale and breathe! If unhinged and delusional were a person, it would be this guy here. It's hard to type without including spoilers so please trust me when I say this is NOT a book you want to pass up.
Well worth the ride!
Thank you so much for trusting me with an advanced copy of your book.
Fine, smart, a ladies man and a KILLER. A deadly combination (pun intended).
This story had me on literal pins and needles with each chapter. Dylan somehow makes you fall in love with him although he has a “killer”flaw. lol.
But when he meets Detective Heather Butler and her team, all bets are off. Just when you think you know what is about to happen, the complete opposite happens and you’re left with your jaw dropped.
This book has spice 🌶️, suspense, and a little horror wrapped up in the perfect story. Oh and I can’t wait for book 2!!!!’
Great job Anna J. And welcome back. The bookish community has missed you!!!
Dylan was a handsome business owner that women couldn’t resist, but they needed to. Dylan was a serial killer, and Detective Butler believes he is on the one responsible for her sister’s disappearance. Detective Butler would stop at nothing to find the person that is responsible for her sister’s disappearance. I liked the book, but I did feel like it was repetitive at times. The book is something you may watch on the ID channel. If you like suspense give this book a try.
Dylan Hunt is a chef and owner of a fusion restaurant by day and a man on a mission by night. The women in Philadelphia aren’t safe as long as he’s around. But, he crossed the wrong family and now there is an all black female special forces unit out to get him.
What amazed me about this page turner is the lengths that people will go to, in order to protect someone they love. The question is, “What secret(s)are they hiding in their cover up?”
This book solidifies @authorannaj place in the psychological thriller/suspense genre. It will have the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end…and then leaves you wanting more. My favorite character was definitely Morgan and my least favorite goes to his mother.
After reading this book, readers will think twice about one night stands. Do yourself a favor and pre-order this book. You’ll thank me later.
🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 You ever read a book where what happens in the prologue is so shocking, exciting, and good that you literally trip over yourself trying to get to the first chapter?! Well, Anna J’s 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭 was that book for me!
Let me tell you, Dylan (MMC) had my jaw on the literal floor with what happened in that prologue! Miss Anna J had my attention from the very first page all the way to the last. This became an unputdownable page-turning read for me. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭 is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat! It was sooooooooo good yall!
There is not much I can say as not to ruin the story, but I will say that I absolutely loved the author’s writing style and her characters.
In most horror/thriller/mystery story, there is usually a “good” guy and a “bad” guy but here, I felt like even the so called “bad guy” wasn’t so bad at all. Don’t get me wrong, this person (MMC) is the worst and does the craziest and most vile things (you’ll see once you read), but I found myself feeling bad for him. It was almost like he was set up to fail from inception and just the way he was written as a character, Ms. Anna J had me both shaking in my booths from fear as it relates to his bad activities but also laughing up a storm at his crazy remarks and internal thoughts! I never thought I would find such a complex character likable. While reading I kept thinking, man, why couldn’t you just be a normal person and not an unhinged psychopath! You could have done so many great things in the world. I was like Tyra Banks the entire time rooting for a killer. I know, my head is hanging in shame. Lol!
Now the FMC Heather, my girl was not playing around, and I LOVED IT! Again, another likeable and funny character and I was egging her on the whole time while she was on the crusade to catch a killer.
I really did not know what to expect going in but one thing I will say is I was not expecting it to be so spicy! If you are a fan of spicy thrillers, this is the perfect read for you because I was clutching pearls the entire time.
No book is great without a life lesson and boy does this one have plenty, one of which being, TRUST NO ONE! We see that this villain is not your average scary person. If you saw him in a room, you would assume, with his good looks and his BDE, that you are in for a good time if he takes you home, but boy would you be wrong! Dylan was no joke and no one to play around with!
Overall, this was a heart pounding, fast-paced thriller that is sure to pull you in from the very beginning and have your heart racing wondering if, when, and how our perpetrator will be brought to justice. It was a suspenseful read full of drama and that ending….mind blown! I did not see that one coming!
I loved reading Anna J’s 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭 and I would definitely recommend it to all lovers of thriller and suspense. I am so excited for book 2 in this series!

Thank you Author Anna J and Pretty Girls do Read for the gifted ARC of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐭.
This was my first time reading Anna J, and let me just say… what a way to win over a new fan.
The Hunt isn’t just a thriller—it’s the kind of book that pulls you into the story so deeply you feel like you’re right there in the chaos. From the opening chapters, the tension is immediate and relentless, and Anna J wastes no time throwing readers straight into a dark and unsettling world.
At its core, the novel centers around a terrifying premise: women are being kidnapped and forced into a deadly game where they become the prey. But what really makes this story stand out is how human the characters feel. These women aren’t just victims in a thriller plot—they’re layered, emotional, and complex. You see their fear, their strength, and the ways they lean on one another to survive impossible circumstances.
Running parallel to this nightmare is the investigation led by Detective Heather Butler and her team of special victims unit detectives. They’re racing against time to stop a killer who is methodically targeting women, and the deeper they dig into the case, the darker the truth becomes.
And then there’s Dylan Hunt.
Dylan is charming, successful, and owns one of the hottest restaurants in Philadelphia. On the surface, he seems to be living his best life—smart, attractive, and thriving. But beneath that polished exterior is a man with a complicated past and secrets that refuse to stay buried.
Anna J blends psychological thriller elements with the sensual storytelling she’s known for, creating a story that is equal parts suspenseful, provocative, and disturbing. The tension builds steadily throughout the book, and just when you think you understand where the story is heading, the author delivers twists that shift the narrative in unexpected ways.
This book does not shy away from very dark themes, and readers should absolutely approach it with awareness of those elements. However, for those who enjoy thrillers that mix psychological tension, erotic undertones, and intense cat-and-mouse storytelling, The Hunt delivers a gripping ride.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with strong female leads and morally ambiguous protagonists. With intense storytelling and complex characters. Anna J masterfully builds tension, making it a page-turner for fans of dark thrillers. If darkness scares you be aware that the book contains explicit and disturbing content. This story will make you rethink some habits and start taking precautions.
Spoiler Alerts........... Don't read if you don't want to know!!!! Anna J’s The Hunt is a dark and gripping thriller that delves into the twisted psyche of Dylan Hunt, a man battling his violent urges while running a successful restaurant in Philadelphia. His killing style is methodical and calculated—he doesn’t just eliminate his victims, he orchestrates their demise with chilling precision. Detective Heather Butler, leading an all-Black, all-female special victims unit, some of whom have their own reason for seeking his capture, is relentless in her pursuit of justice. Her search for vengeance is deeply personal, as the crimes hit close to home, pushing her and her team to their limits. Truthfully, they step beyond the limits. but the strength of her unit is undeniable—they are fierce, intelligent, and unwavering in their mission to bring down the predator terrorizing their city. The mysterious death of Jai adds another layer of intrigue to the story, leaving readers questioning whether it was an accident, a setup, or something far more sinister. Meanwhile, Dylan’s parents, who maybe hiding their own crimes, play a shocking role in his downfall, setting him up in ways that force him to confront his past and the demons that haunt him. With its intense storytelling and morally complex characters, The Hunt is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. However, readers should be prepared for its dark themes and explicit content. I have ALOT of questions after reading The Hunt!!!!
This book may have the most unhinged MMC I’ve ever read. Dylan Hunt, the owner of one of the hottest restaurants in Philly, appears to have everything going for him. But he’s walking around with a terrible secret: he’s one of the worst serial killers in the city’s history. And guess what? This monster specifically targets Black women.
We’re also introduced to Detective Heather Butler and her team of all-Black women SVU detectives. They’re determined to catch the monster responsible for killing over a dozen women while leaving behind almost no clues. Can Detective Butler stop him before he kills again, or will she become his next victim?
I’ve worked in SVU for over 15 years, so I naturally gravitate toward stories like this. I really enjoyed the all-Black women detective unit, the suspense, and the author’s touch of humor throughout such a dark storyline.
My dislikes: I didn’t care for the overly detailed, sexually explicit graphic murder scenes. At times, they felt repetitive. I also noticed some grammar issues. 3.75 ⭐️
This book could have EASILY been 5 star review but there were multiple typos one I couldn’t even understand what I was reading (get better proof readers or a proof reader) there were also parts that didn’t make sense , we didn’t find out that Dylan had any siblings til dang near the end of the book . When his father said he wanted to talk “after his kids were gone.” Who was these “kids” when at the end of the book they only mentioned 1 sister and she was home schooled so where did she go before 10am? Again proof readers . Also the parents point of view at the end was pointless I didn’t skim any part of the story except those 2 epilogues they were boring and most was already explained during the story . If the point of those was to introduce the sister then it could have been done in a better more interesting way. Out of 3 epilogues none of them hinted a story for the next book , if the next book is suppose to be about the “copy cat killer” than one of the epilogues should have been from their POV not revealing who they were so people would want to read the next book , instead of what we got which seem to be “filler” chapters to reach a word count .
Overall I liked the story and it was worth the read . I most likely would read the next but please get some honest proof readers .
“How do you say, “you may not make it out of this alive” without scaring someone off?”
“Not one of these white women had to worry about me. Believe that. They could take their Lulu Lemon and get the hell on.”
This story starts off so fast. Within a few pages my mouth was literally stuck open at what I was reading. As a reader who loves an unhinged character, Dylan Hunt has easily become one of the most memorable.
-hilarious writing style -10/10 unhinged MMC -multiple POVs -detailed spice -based in Philly -sexual fetishes -OCD representation -mental health representation -all Black women special victims unit -violence & murder -victims & retribution -real life references (social media) -solid epilogues
This is the 1st book in the series. My only qualm was the amount of misspellings and grammatical errors. Thankfully, it didn’t deter from the chaotic storyline. I look forward to reading book 2.
This is my first time reading Anna J. and it more than satisfied my reading pleasures. This is the story of a successful chef who's handsome and charismatic and also a deranged serial killer. And the crazy part was I found myself liking MC Dylan Hunt...he keeps trying to be better. He's on his way to becoming a pillar in the community, uplifting as many people as he can along the way. It's his way of making up for his murderous ways. Can he stop his killing sprees for good?
The hunt becomes the hunted within these pages as Detective Heather Butler investigates all the evidence of these murder cases. And the chase is delicious.
This book has the three things I love: most food, murder and a few hard twists. It was pretty spicy as a bonus! And the ending was superb!
OMG, Anna J., you did not disappoint!!! This was a definite page turner. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I kept saying to myself, just five more minutes; ok I will stop when I get to the end of this chapter. Before I knew it, it was 11:00pm, and I was just getting up from my recliner and getting in the bed.
Dylan was a chef, attractive, and appeared to be smooth as butter, so he thought. He ran into a squad of women that were not going to stop until they got their man. The "Squad" was not going to let it go. I will stop here because if I keep going, this review will be full of spoilers. I am most definitely ready for The Hunt, Part 2.
I must say Anna J, you wielded your pen like a sword making precise cuts.
