"The future is what I have to look toward-what we all have to look toward now."
description

Odium II is the second book in The Dead Saga Series. Nina, the most bad-ass heroine I have ever met, is back and ready for battle!

description
"People will do anything to protect the ones they love."
Odium II picks up right where Odium left us. Nina, Mikey, and Em are in trouble. Not only do they have to battle the zombies but their fate is in the hands of the Forgotten. As Nina tries to maintain the physical strength she needs to overcome her adversaries, her emotional walls continue to break down as her love for Em and Mikey continues to flourish. Even with Mikey's dark past, which is now haunting them, her passion and desire for Mikey to be by her side is a constant reminder that there is hope even in this dark and destitute world.

description
"I am scared, but fear isn't something to dismiss. So grab hold of it and maybe it can stop us from making the same stupid mistakes as before."
Told in mostly Nina's POV, Odium II is a perfect addition to this outstanding series. Nina is by far my favorite heroine of all time. She is sharp, sarcastic, and a real fighter. I simply adore the dynamics between her and Mikey. Mikey and Nina could not be more different, and yet, they are a fantastic match. Nina's love for her surrogate daughter/little sister Em is natural and as their relationship continues to grow it only makes the love I feel for these characters even more intense. In addition to the unique relationships, the Odium Series offers non-stop action, humorous dialogue, and a creative plot. With the introduction of new characters, there is a revolving door of circumstances and emotions all centered around the same theme....don't die!

description

Overall, I highly recommend Odium II to anyone who enjoys an action-packed apocalyptic world where no one is safe, and anything can happen! The characters are complex, and the multi-layered plot will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire read! This series is addictive! I simply cannot get enough of Nina and this whole crew of characters. Be forewarned, you will want to have Odium III downloaded and ready to read! Although I fear no character is truly safe, I have high hopes that Nina and Mikey will prevail!

5 Twisted Stars

Genre: Dystopia/Horror/Zombie Apocalyptic
Type: Book 2 of The Dead Saga Series
POV: First Person - Multiple

This book opens up with the reality that Nina finds herself yet in a different type of hell, a new nightmare. She feels betrayed and yet she wants to keep going to protect the ones she cares for. Nina honestly is someone you can look out to because in her weakness she finds strength. She always ends up sacrificing herself to protect others. At the end of the last book, Nina is at the mercy of the forgotten. They are cruel and I freaking hate them. The things they did to Nina I can't even breathe thinking about it.

Mikey was devastated because they made him watch her suffer. However he promised he would get them out of that mess even if he had to do things he hated.

We meet new characters, some just briefly but others play a major part in the series. Hilary and Deacon are a couple that have a story running parallel with that of Nina and her crew. All the events leading towards the end left me on the edge. And what crazy ending I mean what in the world?! Ahhh Claire has delivered another incredible ride packed with suspense, action, blood, and the twisted plot that you will not see coming.

Readers who enjoy this type of writing should grab this series because I guarantee you will not be dissapointed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
‘your body is not ruined, you’re a goddamn tiger who earned her stripes.’ These marks,” I take her hand in mine, “these are my stripes, Emily, and these are my proof that I survived.”

Well what a fun ride this was!! I LOVE CLAIRE RILEY!! Wow- This book picked right up where book 1 left off. Nina, Emily and Mikey are in trouble and their fate lies in the hands of the Forgotten- not to mention every deader zombie along the way. Nina has been through hell and while she is trying to get her physical strength back, her emotions are all over the place. Hell MY emotions were all over the place....

The beginning of this book is savage. Nina is being tortured, Mickey seems to have jumped ship and Emily seems to be getting cozy with the enemy. This is observations that Nina is making which in turn- pisses her off. Rule of Thumb- Don't piss Nina off- Just DONT DO IT.

We get to see a TON of new characters through out this book. Some are the enemy- some are fun and heartwarming and some are just bat shit CRAZY. The deaders do not take a step back, they remain the highlight and are still in full force throughout this installment.

The action is still at full speed. The one thing about this book though is it made me laugh SO MUCH. I mean yeah... its a zombie book and people are going nuts but man... there are some FUNNY moments.

Nina is such a great main character. She falls under any name you use to identify her with. She's sassy, savage, tough and can be a huge BITCH. But she is still top - notch.

The characters are always on the move and something is always happening. We see major character growth with our main characters and get to watch their relationships with each other blossom so much. There are a ton of twists and turns and Mrs. Riley did not hold back with the emotions. There is something so unique about her characters dialogue.

I am so ready for book 3!! If you haven't started this series yet- GO DO IT :P And come back and we can discuss!

~ I was given this book in exchange for an honest review ~

High five Claire C. Riley!!! Wow and holy effing crap and OK...I will calm down now and write a proper review.
The trick will be to write as spoiler free of a review as possible so as NOT to ruin it for those who have yet to devour this delicious and gross treat...but there is just SO much that happens in this awesome continuation of Odium...I don't know quite where to begin!!
Nina, Mikey and Emily manage to escape the Forgotten (along with a companion for Emily who helps them)..but not until they have experienced so much horror and violence that none of them get away unscathed...in fact the first chapters of the book are so filled with action and gore and horrible abuse that I wanted to cry for poor Nina and beat some nasty men into a bloody pulp myself. What follows after the escape is a series of encounters with other people and places that set the whole mood for what is to come.
Without being too specific (NO SPOILERS...it will ruin all the fun of discovery!)...they come to a place where all is too neat to be normal and some people apparently need to be able to cope with loss in their own way...even if it means living in complete denial of the realities of what has happened to the life they once knew...and have headed into crazy town to protect their sanity!
In alternating chapters from Nina's POV we have Hilary and Deacon, a couple who are trying their best to survive all alone while protecting their own very precious cargo...and the purpose for their story will be made crystal clear later on in the book when Nina learns some very sickening and horrific information about someone she trusted.
My favorite scenes in the book and indeed it was necessary to get a break from all the on-the-road hardships, is when the foursome arrive (after a nasty encounter with a zombie-gore filled pit) at an army base and here is when all of the really fun stuff begins (insert sarcastic smirk here).
We are introduced to several more characters who will play an important role in the rest of the book as well as in the next book to come...let me just say the adventure to survive, get supplies and bond as human beings is a tough road and I know I would have a hard time to make it in their world.
A big story development involves a trio from the camp who Nina is forced to go out on a supply gathering mission with...and what is dicovered and how it plays out is just shocking! And then OMG we are left with a huge cliffhanger at the end...shame on you Claire Riley!!
Needless to say, I absolutely LOVED this book...it was just as strong if not even better than the original...and I am now left to wonder what the heck will happen in the third installment. Bravo on a job well done...now I need to go read something light and fluffy to get those final images out of my head =)

Taking off several months after the end of the original book, Odium II immediately shows you that there is no rest in sight for our heroine, Nina. From the first chapters, we are reintroduced to the dark world of Nina and company and taught one very important lesson...zombies aren't the worst thing in the world...people are.

This book starts in a dark place and seemingly continues in that same path for its entirety, until you begin thinking about the emotional path of Nina. We begin to see her turning into more of a feminine character, a dynamic that was introduced in Odium, but not to any real degree. We see Nina wanting to make friends, to get comfortable, to find safety...and...even managing to trust people.

Her road is rocky and by the end of this title, she's still the kick-ass warrior princess we've come to know and love, but Odium II reminds us that this saga is about HER, pure and simple. And Riley's definitely showing us that there's a lot more going on inside that head of Nina's than just rage.

The end of this book leaves us with a real cliffhanger, one in which I can't wait to see what Riley decides to do with it. I'm definitely in for the end of this ride. I just hope, for Nina's sake, it comes soon.

While this is technically the second book in a trilogy, this does not read like a middle book, folks! It has its own plot and characters and stands strongly on its own two putrefying feet. There is a ton of new information being introduced; it isn’t just about surviving anymore. Now it’s about maintaining some sort of real life, maybe even making some friends along the way. Careful making friends in the apocalypse… you never know when they’ll get eaten…

I have to say, I think this book was even stronger than the first. Since the main characters are already fully formed, I was completely at home with them, and ready to join them on the next leg of their journey. No more world building was needed and Claire jumped right into the action. The Forgotten take a bit of a back seat to the Deaders this time around, but they haven’t been written out. They are constantly lurking in the background, threatening to kill all of my favorite characters. I do have some new favorites, like Nova, the red headed firecracker who gets off on killing the undead. Dean and Anne are two teens with some weird ideas and some brilliant ones. Nina is sporting a new samurai blade, and Rachel is an explosives expert. Zombies go BOOM!

There is a new aspect to this story: Hilary and Deacon. They have their own chapters thrown in from time to time, giving a peek into a different side plot. At first I was wondering why they were there, what their purpose was. It wasn’t until almost the end of the story before I realized what was going on and went “Ohhhhhhh… shiiiiiit.” The story is taking a whole new turn, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

I do need to give the standard warning. Yes, this book is violent. Yes, there is a shit-ton of gore, blood spatter, rotting corpses and indescribable scents and textures. Yes, there are 202 F-bombs. These are just some of the many reasons why I loved this book. Claire’s writing is creative and exciting, and if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be preparing for the Zombie Apocalypse by investing in a snow plow.

So, you know when an ebook says you have 10% left, and you think that’s plenty of time to wrap up all of the plot… and then you turn the page and it’s the end? Claire was super sneaky! I may have actually growled in desperation. GAH! CLIFFHANGER! Need Odium III NOW!!

Odium II carries on from where we left Nina, Mikey and Emily after they are captured by the Forgotten. Again this book captivated me, I love Claire's narrative when it comes to Nina. I find it refreshing that she isn't the perfect heroine, she doesn't try to be nice and she isn't afraid to let her bitch show after all that's just who she is.

Nina, Mikey and Emily make their escape from the Forgotten, we meet a host of new characters at the encampment they find themselves at. This is what I love most about this series as it was something outside of my norm; Claire's writing and the humanity she inserts behind her words to develop her characters is outstanding and you can't help but enjoy these books! New camp and new camp mates bring new challenges and a new dynamic between Mikey and Nina, she is finally realising she actually likes him by her side, they rely on each other and it's warming her cold black heart.

New characters are a plenty some play a big role and some revelations that going forward change the path our leads are going to take. Rachel is totally cuckoo, deluded by her warped reasoning, Nova is someone I think Nina will come to love as that girl companion she has needed for so long. Michael well, he is a kick ass soldier but a bit of a douche. What happens when Nina goes out on a recon mission has huge consequences for her and Mikey and their moment on the swing set tugged on my heart strings big time!

Throw in the cliffy involving Deacon and Hilary and you have me craving Book 3 ASAP. The story is complex, and you are truly invested in the characters old and new. I just love the psychology behind seeing how these characters try to survive in their post apocalyptic world. I listened to the audio book and the narrator Jennifer Riley nails Nina's sass, she gets the emotions across when needed, and the speed of the novel was well paced. Odium 2 has been a roller coaster of a journey and I am sure it's nowhere near stopping!

REVIEW: ODIUM II by Claire Riley

Second in hard-hitting author Claire Riley' s ODIUM series, ODIUM II demonstrates to readers exactly how much more intense the Zombie Apocalypse can become. When running for survival, going homeless and hungry just isn't painful and dangerous enough, try existing as these characters do, hiding from the "deaders" AND from "the Forgotten," human monsters loosely gathered into enclaves. These had been purposely excluded from the walled compounds, left to fend for themselves and their families. Those that survived the deaders possess only one all-consuming obsession: revenge on survivors in the walled cities.

5! 5 Bloody Stars!
I'm already deeply invested with this saga, from the moment we met our heroine in Odium. I knew that with her snarky attitude, will to survive, and Doc Martens that Nina would be a force to be reckoned with. Odium II gives you that and more, much much more.

Wow! That ending!

I've read a few zombie books, but Odium highlights some things that hadn't garnered my attention before and left me with plenty of questions. One survivor has a way of herding the undead by way of electric currents. Zombies don't have body functions so when they eat it has no place to go; thus, you get deaders with pieces of bodies inside them. The smells, the smells! How far are people willing to experiment in order to find a cure? What if it's not a virus but rather the next evolution?

Nina is relatable to most of us. She tries to be strong and help others. She's plagued by what is right morally versus strategically. At the end of the last book, Nina is at the mercy of the forgotten. Let's just say they aren't very merciful with her. And our girl Nina just can't keep her queries at bay. She has a habit of sticking her nose into things, out of one situation and into another.

Several new characters enter the story, some in passing and others in major ways. Hilary and Deacon are a couple that have a story running parallel with that of Nina and her crew. I definitely can't wait to find out more from them. Also, notice the blurb says "Some secrets are too horrific to ever be forgiven, and some people should never be trusted." We've witnessed some of this already in the previous book but not like this. It's the apocalypse—people be crazy!

I loved this book, and I will definitely be continuing the series.

Twisted. Breaking. And a Reveal that Punches you in the Face. FIVE, highly deserved, STARS

******

High Five, Claire! You’ve produced another example of why you’re one of my favorite authors and a rising star to watch. Speaking of stars- can you say 5 stars? If I could rate this book higher, you bet your sweet buttocks I would.

Readers fell in love with Nina’s snark and Doc Martens in ODIUM I. And it was gut-wrenching when the first book ended, leaving us with absolutely no idea what would happen to the main characters at the hands of the Forgotten. So, when I heard that the second book was coming out in May, I marked it on my calendar- with a big, bloody red ‘X’. Well, not blood, but sharpie. Close enough.

The beginning of the book is brutal. Nina is being tortured to within an inch of her sanity, Mikey seems to have turned-coat and rejoined the Forgotten and Emily, well, she seems to be sitting pretty contributing to the community with every strand of hair unharmed. How does this make Nina feel? Understandably… pissed off.

Of course, nothing is what it seems and Claire C Riley takes us on a twisted journey where the travels of our main characters are punctuated by a new duo… a couple, the woman pregnant, running from something. Something more terrible than the Forgotten. That’s hard to imagine, that there’s something in Claire’s dystopian, deader-ridden landscape worse than brutal humans willing to do anything (and I mean anything) to survive.

Okay, I don’t want to give too much away here. What’s another point I want to make… Oh, yes.

Sometimes, when you read this type of book (this genre, etc.), you end up with a book that is either ‘too brutal’ or ‘too vague’. For example, pages and pages of gore with no levity OR, endless movement through scenes that lack descriptions that really bring a reader into the landscape of the book. Claire threads levity and heartfelt scenes throughout her book in the form of a young couple that is clinging to the world that they ‘remembered’ so they could mentally survive the apocalypse. It’s strange and causes me to quirk an eyebrow, but it’s also a perfect picture of how different people may cope with the ‘end’. On the subject of descriptions and details- Claire is aces at it. She brings every sense into the read- even evoking a sense of smell, of touch. After some zombie-killing scenes, I could actually taste the rotting, pungent flesh. Gross, but highly effective.

Now, again, I don’t want to give too much away here, but there is a huge reveal towards the end of the book, when Nina is faced with the madness of certain new characters. Just when you think Nina’s had it, a twist punches the reader square in the jaw. And… oh… that reveal. Trust me, your eyes will widen, your stomach will drop and all you’ll be able to think is ‘WTF?!’.

So, that’s my spoiler-free, 2 cents. Read the book. (Read the first book if you haven’t). It’ll capture you, lock you in a vice, and leave you dry-heaving. It’s that damn good.

REVIEW: ODIUM II The Dead Saga is the second instalment in Claire C Riley’s contemporary, horror zombie series focusing on a group of people attempting to survive in a world infested with the walking dead. The definition of odium is hatred accompanied by disgust or intense dislike; hatred caused by a despicable act; hatred and condemnation; and can be applied to many different aspects of the storyline and series. Told in first person POV through the eyes of the feisty, alpha and oft times irritating heroine Nina, the storyline is interspersed with a tale about another couple struggling to survive. It is their tale that will come full circle in the final pages of Odium II.

The storyline follows a group of survivors and the trouble they encounter on the road looking for supplies and a safe place to live. If all of this sounds familiar then you are correct. Fans of The Walking Dead will see many parallels, similarities and plot points including an aggressive female heroine who battles with herself and the others all the while carrying a sword as her weapon of choice. Our band of misfits must face off against an enemy of the undead as well as a group of people known as The Forgotten. The Forgotten are those survivors who were not allowed into the government refugee cities and were cast out on their own. These groups of people are determined to destroy the walled cities and take down everyone who stands in their way.

Claire C Riley has written a story of survival-from the search for food and supplies to the destruction of people, places and relationships. As our heroine Nina learns to trust the people in whom she has placed her survival she will discover that everyone hides a secret–but some more evil than others.

ODIUM II The Dead Saga is an interesting story on the zombie storyline with a twist that will spike your curiosity about the what-ifs and whys. Claire C Riley puts a spin on the walking dead scenario that will reveal itself in the next instalment-of course we are hoping for a HEA but there is rarely any happiness in the world of the zombie apocalypse.

Now Nina... she is really evolving. Self centered crazy bitch turned.... well, not as self centered, but certainly still very much a live wire crazy bitch. I imagine her "resting bitch face" could scare the heck out of anyone. What can I say, I dig her. She can take care of herself, and anyone else who comes along. Sure, she's not a superhero with a weapon, but she is learning. In fact, she is learning a lot in O2. Like how to keep her mouth shut at times when I really don't want her to! I swear, if there was ever a time for her to keep talking, it's in this book - but obviously she couldn't hear me yelling at the pages, eh? Either way, she's good with me - but she'd be better off if she would listen to me. Plus she loves her Docs as much as any woman can love a pair of shoes - a woman after my own heart!

Like I said, there is a lot going on in this book. Zombies, of course. Gross, putrid, hungry zombies. They rock. And of course, lots of travelling. Camaraderie. Relationship building. A few flesh wounds. Secrets come out in this book, and it costs people their lives. Surviving ain't easy, but you have to do it, and that's all there is to it. The secrets are.... well, they're huge. And those secrets will definitely clue you in on some other things happening in the book. It all ties together perfectly, and just when I thought I couldn't take the mystery any more, Ms. Riley tied it up nice for us!

Claire C Riley also introduces us to a slew of new characters. Some we get to know reasonably well, some are just introductions - and I hope we get to see them more in the upcoming story. There is one woman who is really catching my fancy, and her name is Nova. I kind of picture her like a futuristic, kind of crazy Lara Croft. The woman is badass, and she's a soldier basically. She's got a crazy sense of humor, but once you get past her defenses, I'm pretty sure it's like you are VIP.

This book kind of ended on a cliffy note, and I kind of wanted to threaten Claire Riley. I am not sure when book three comes out, but oh man - I hope it's soon (just checked, it's this winter - whew!). I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS! I mean seriously, it's not nice to toy with my emotions. I have a real bad feeling about what's coming, and I can only hope I am wrong!

Zombie fans, if you haven't picked up the Odium books, you need to hurry. This author writes a fantastic story that felt like I was fully immersed in through the entire way. Everything is vivid, even when I'm not so sure I want it to be (hello, zombies aren't exactly good bathers, ya know!??!) This series will definitely satisfy the horror lover in you. There is lots of action, some great kisses, some awesome revelations, and hey - a jackpot of a scavenger trip. Claire C Riley writes with intelligence, snark, and a healthy dose of humor in a dark apocalyptic world, and I just adore this series to pieces. Five stars!

Odium II begins with a heart attack in the making! I was immediately consumed by the intensity of the opening scene and became highly agitated every time I had to put the book down before devouring the last word. This seems to be a pattern with Claire's books, and you won't hear me complaining about it. The Dead Saga series is at the very top of my "favorite reads" list, not only in the horror genre, but overall. I loved both Odium and Odium Origins, and Odium II is even stronger. This series just keeps getting better and better!

Claire C. Riley is the kind of author that knows precisely how to pull readers in and keep a kung fu grip on you until the very end. Her spunky personality comes across in her stories, which makes them such a delight to read -- which seems an odd thing for me to say considering the type of books she writes, but it's the truth. I love her writing style. I can relate to it. I become wholly absorbed by it.

Odium II begins by showing us exactly what Mikey, Nina, and Emily have been up to since we last saw them in book one. To say they've had a rough go of it would be quite the understatement. Nina is severely tortured by The Forgotten and is left in solitude to ponder the fates of Mikey and Emily. The vibe in the beginning of this story is so deep, dark and twisted, and that's before the zombies even come into play.

In Odium II we meet a new cast of secondary characters. I mean, after what has already happened there would have to be, right? At first I was kind of pouty about meeting new folks because, well.. that's just how I am, but Claire does a fabulous job of breathing life into her characters, so it didn't take long before I was on board with the new way of things. She's also very adept at making me look like this while reading her books...

Claire spares no details when it comes to her deaders, including the rancid stench which you can practically taste. Between the imagery of the throngs of rotting corpses, the character development that swiftly forces the reader to want to know more about these people, and the non-stop, hand-over-your-chest, try-like-hell-to-breathe-normally-so-you-don't-faint action that fills these pages, Odium II is a horror lovers wet dream. I can't get enough of this series. I'm a little miffed that I've already read it because I want more right now! Yeah, I'll admit it.. I'm really freaking jealous of all of you that still have this next story to look forward to. Buckle up, baby.. it's one hell of a ride!

Claire, you better be in your writing cave!

We pick up where we left Nina in the first book…..although not exactly where we left them which was a good thing…..after reading the blurb I was a bit hesitant to start this one as I did not know if I could handle hearing what Nina went through with the forgotten….. it was nice that we started out a bit further and then kind of flashed back….it was not so hard to hear after that (still brutal but…easier to deal with at least for me). The first new couple we meet are Deacon & Hillary, who don’t meet up with Nina and crew but I thought it was headed there…..when I finally figured out who they were…it was a Holy Crap! moment. There was also the OCD/Cleaning obsessed kids and then at their final destination the people at the army base/bunker. I’m not going to give anything away here cause I’m not sure I can do it without giving spoilers, you are just going to have to read or listen yourself, trust me it’s good. My biggest compliant about this book is that the author seemed to way over use “I roll my eyes” for Nina….I stopped counting after number 34…..I know it’s a small thing to nitpick but it was used so much it stood out. My only other complaint and I’m sure I’m not alone is Hello Cliffhanger…..I mean really, first we have to come to terms with the whole Nina and Mikey thing…..then you give us that ending….ARRRRGGGGHHHH. I have decided I am waiting for the series to be complete and then I can listen to them all back to back……which will kinda suck to have to wait but I think in the end I will be a much happier reader (I have no patience….I want to know what happens and I usually want to know now….) The narration…..again Jennifer Reilly did a fabulous job with all the characters and she really does Nina’s character well, I also really enjoyed her voice for Nova. She made distinguishing all the characters very easy as they all their own unique voice or way of speaking and I’m looking forward to seeing what else she narrates.

According to Bob Marley, whom Nina quotes, "You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have." And, boy, does that sentiment hold true, right from the beginning, where we find Nina being tortured uncontrollably by The Forgotten.

Though there are new characters to get to know, the deaders don't take a back seat at all. They are still a constant threat to everyone - including our beloved characters from Odium.

Woven throughout Nina's, Emily's, and Mikey's story is a couple on the run from deaders, Deacon and Hilary, who is pregnant. But, there's a dark secret unknown to them that will be revealed later in the story.

And then there is Dean and Anne, a strange couple that the group encounters, with their unusual view of the apocalypse. I can't help wonder if their accidental genius idea will surface in Odium III.

What I find brilliant is how Claire was able to step up not only the visual descriptions of the deaders, but the smells as well. There is dried out flesh hanging in ribbons from puckered faces and rotten eyeballs dangling from graying sockets, which is awesomely disgusting. I found myself wrinkling my nose in disgust because I could smell the deaders as much as the characters could.

There is creative imagery like, "branches crudely piercing the snow-filled sky like rotten fingers dipped in vanilla ice cream" and a place that "looked more looted than whore's panties."

This book is definitely not for the faint of heart, with its descriptions and colorful language.

I'm not happy with the ending, though. But that's only because I have unanswered questions, and I don't want to wait around for Odium III.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I was giving a copy of Odium II by the author in exchange for my honest review. It in no way influences my opinion of the book. I was going to love it, no matter how I got my hands on it.

Odium II by Claire C Riley is the long awaited 2nd book in her The Dead Saga series, and it did not disappoint. The series so far has been phenomenal, and Odium II was everything I expected and more. I am already anxiously awaiting part 3. I loved everything about this book, the storyline, the action, the way she wrote it, and the jaw dropping twists Claire threw in. The storyline isn’t all about the zombies, Claire put a lot of focus on the personal struggles the characters are going through, but don’t get me wrong the zombie action is awesome. Claire puts so much detail in writing about the zombies, I felt like I was there smelling, hearing and fighting them right along with the characters. The Dead Saga is defiantly a series I would recommend to any zombie lover. Odium II also introduces us to a whole new set of characters, to love right along with Nina, Mickey and Emily. I hate to brag but I am one of them new characters, along with some other fans that filled out Claire’s survival questionnaire. I don’t do spoilers so you’ll just have to take my word for it…..Odium II is an extraordinary piece of work, that you won’t want to miss out on. Get your 1-click finger ready, grab your copy today, and find out why, fortune favors… The dead.

Riley has done it again! I always feel like I’m in a damn video game with how her deaders come out of nowhere and I’m faced with my own demise if I don’t pull out my samurai sword and start slashing some heads! The adrenaline courses through me, and I feel like I’m unstoppable as I savagely rip through each zombie to save the lives of everyone I love.
Odium II was non-stop action, and it had my heart pounding the whole time. I didn’t expect any of the plot twists, and the last 25% my mouth hung open in shock.
Of note: I think I’ve found the perfect life-long diet, as I wasn’t able to eat much while reading this. Not only was I engrossed in the story, but as soon as I’d reach for a pretzel, my hunger suddenly turned to bile rising in my throat. I read the horribly realistic, gory, and putrid descriptions of rotting limbs, stinky intestines pouring from gaping torso holes, and hollowed black holes that once were the home to eyeballs. Some seriously vomit-inducing stuff right here.
But then there’s the other side to this story, where the narrative is so precise that you can literally smell and taste the foods that the author describes, paying special attention to texture and flavor. This is one of the things I love best about this author.
This is a one of a kind story that will leave you wanting more of every character. I can’t wait for the next installment!

Love this series!

This series is great! I ready enjoyed the ups and downs in the second book. Nina and Mikey's relationship is tumultuous to say the least. There's a lot going on in this one. Cannot wait to see how it ends!

I enjoyed this but maybe not as much as the first in the series. This one was quite a bit darker with more descriptive violence which includes rape and torture. Note: None of the crimes were committed by a potential love interest.

Gory and Full of Suspense.

Holy moly! Claire C. Riley has just took this series a whole new level. I’m in awe of her creative mind, okay slightly terrified (channeling my inner Nina).
Nina, Mikey and Emily continue their journey on the
run from the Forgotten and fighting off deaders and unexpected encounters- new alliances, new foes, and more danger.
Odium 2 was heart wrenching, gut churning, suspenseful and uniquely hilarious (as hilarious as the zombie apocalypse can get- but with Nima it’s hella funny!)
I loved seeing Emily growing up a little.

“I don’t just want to survive. I want to live.”

5 Stars full of suspense and gore.

The beginning of this book......wow, that was brutal. But in the apocalypse, it's definitely not going to be rainbows and sunshine. As much as I was addicted after book 1, this is the story that solidified my love for this series. It took me through quite a range of emotions, but I am so invested in Nina's story, especially after seeing her with Mikey, that I just can't get enough.

"The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you.
You just got to find the ones worth suffering for."

Odium II picks up pretty much where the first book left off. The Forgotten are still a-holes, Mickey is missing and things are anything but pleasant for Nina and Emily.

The first few chapters in this book are some of the most brutal that I've read in not only quite awhile but possibly in years. Nina is one strong woman to suffer that much abuse and still come out relatively intact and most importantly sane. However, once the group manages to escape The Forgotten's clutches things go from bad to desperate with supplies running out and winter on its way.

What I consistently like about this series is the way the characters never give up despite the sometimes monumental obstacles in their way. In many respects Nina reminds me of the little engine that could. She just huffs and puffs and repeats to herself over and over “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. I know I can.” Most people would break down and cower in a corner with the horrors she's been witness to but not Nina. Of course this mentality applies not just to Nina but others in her group as well.

Another thing I really enjoyed was learning more about the walled cities. Initially I was bummed we didn't get to hear more about Lee or even encounter another city through their travels but what we do learn definitely does make it seem that the survivors are much better off on the outside instead of the inside that's for sure. Maybe, just maybe The Forgotten isn't entirely wrong in their mission.

Lastly, I love the new characters Nina and the group meet along the way. From the delusional teenagers just trying to maintain some sort of normalcy to the plucky Rachel whose like Crunch 2.0 except crazier which if you had asked me last book I'd never of thought that'd be possible, lol.

Now even though I did enjoy the sequel to Odium it wasn't everything I hoped it to be and here's why:

First off Nina, While I did enjoy Nina a lot more this time around her behavior whenever she doesn't get her way is beyond tiresome. She's what in her mid twenties at least and yet reverts back to a spoiled toddler whenever someone dares to question her actions. It just bugs me and makes her so unlikable at times.

Secondly, I really didn't like the jumps in perspective. It literally takes almost the entire book to be clued into why were following Hillary and Deacon in the first place. It would've been so much better if the group had at least spotted them on the run before were shown what was going on with them. The disconnect for me didn't do the book any service. I just didn't care enough about those characters when by the end I'm told I should of.

Lastly, I hated the ending. If the Author has any flaws in her writing it is how to properly end a book. These cliffhangers wouldn't be so bad if they were written decently but just stopping the story at a random point without any sort of AH-HA moment leaves little if nothing to be desired. I need closure to a story whether a series, stand alone or cliffhanger. I don't get that from these books and it consistently has made me downgrade my rating because of it.

Final Thoughts
I'm really torn on how I feel I should feel finishing this sequel. Do I enjoy the series? Yes. Will I keep reading it despite my issues? Certainly. Would I recommend the Author or the series? You bet. On so many levels Claire C. Riley is a fantastic Zombie writer. She hits all the right notes in terms of the Zombies themselves and is consistent in keeping the situations the characters find themselves in scary or at least tension filled. However, I haven't thus far really liked the main character and I do feel that the stories tend to drag on longer than they should.

In all honesty I'm sort of at a loss. I feel like with just a few tweaks this series could be off the charts amazing. I know the author has it in her based on what she's written thus far and maybe that's why I tend to judge these books harsher than say your run of the mill Zombie story. I can sense that wow factor just out of reach but instead of obtaining it, I'm left always coming within grasp of its greatness. So,with that being said, I'll be rating Odium II by Claire C. Riley ★★★.

P.S. Not really important to the story but I love the shout out to T.W. Brown whose another Author I really enjoy. I love those sort of Easter Eggs dropped in a book.

Oh you got me again Ms. Riley. I was definitely not disappointed with this novel in the least. I was trying to slow down and savor this book, just read a little slower than my normal light speed pace, but no, I could not put it down. I had to force myself to let it last as long as I did. You have again delivered with a rockstar of a book.
As always, I do not like reading spoilers, so I do not put spoilers in the reviews. I will let you know this, if you have any problem with gore, graphic descriptions, adult situations and how humans are going to be at their worst at times, this is not a book for you. If however, this is your cup of tea, by all means, you need to read this. Our female main character (Nina) is quite mouthy, and a bit (haha) on the daring side. Basically who you would hope you could be if you needed to survive. Doc Martins and all. At least I hope I would not be a sniveling mess curled up in a ball somewhere. Nina is found right where we left off in Odium I, and that was not in a nice place. So, if you have not read the first book, you are going to be totally lost. You will be able to get the gist of it, but there are nuances that you are not going to understand if you have not read the first book.
This installment brings Nina a little closer to understanding herself a little better, and seems we get to understand a little more of what happened to the world. Ms. Riley delivers all of this character development with swift action, plenty of gore, lots of feeling, and just a little humor as well. There were characters she made likeable, people you thought were going to be pretty ok, and then she pulls the rug out from under you. Nina is a little more on her own this time, so we get to see a lot more of her inner workings. She is quite the thinker while she is killing zombies. This is where Nina seems to get to understand herself a little better, and we get to see in to her a little more as well. We are also introduced to two entirely separate characters, for which we do not see the connection until it is too late for the train wreck that is about to happen. All of this, and as soon as you cannot stop reading, she leaves you hanging, right there.
So yes, this book is great, but I would recommend it for older young adult readers due to some of the situations Nina is subjected to, and to anyone who is a fan of horror, zombies, and apocalypse books. This is an Author worth following, she is going to put out some great books.
