Bilbury Country is the fourth book in The Young Country Doctor series by Dr Vernon Coleman. The books are all set in the village of Bilbury in the English county of Devon. It's the 1970s and the village is old-fashioned and, in many ways, cut off from the world. Bilbury Country includes the usual cast of villagers - as well as the doctor and his wife. `The fourth book in the series describes what happens to Bilbury and its villagers when a newspaper story turns a trickle of visitors into a flood. Full of charm and humour.' - News & Star The Bilbury books have attracted great reviews and thousands of fans around the world. `You can sniff the clean Devon air and recognise characters indigenous to any West Country village. Dr Coleman harnesses the essence of village life with a wealth of characters and strings them along on a tide of gentle humour.' Western Morning News `A cornupcopia of colourful characters helps to weave a rich tapestry of village life subtly tempered with the gentle humour which hallmarks this author's work. Set in the 1970s, the mixture of rural beauty, human nature and the odd whisper of nostalgia combine to make this book a real delight.' Western Gazette `Coleman handles the humour with the assured touch that comes from having already written a string of successful titles (and) manages to retain a heartwarming affection for his fellow man.' - Yorkshire Evening Post `For sheer relaxing pleasure here's another witty tale from the doctor whose prolific writings are so well known to many of us.' Bookshelf (BBC) `Captures the essence of old fashioned village life where you never needed to lock your door.' - Western Evening Herald `A pleasure to read from cover to cover.' - Kentish Express The author of the Bilbury books, Vernon Coleman, is a bestselling writer whose books have sold over two million hardback and paperback copies in the UK alone and been translated into 24 languages. Trained as a doctor, Dr Coleman is still a registered GP, though he has earned his living as an author for many years now. He has written over 100 books. These include Mrs Caldicot's Cabbage War (which has been turned into an award winning film), Mr Henry Mulligan and Paris in My Springtime. I really don't know why I've read four of these books except that they fill a sleepless night easily. They are full of ultra twee quirky characters, Dr Coleman seems to need to describe everyone's articles of dress in minute detail and the whole thing feels like straining at a gnat. Lots of people love them, me I hate them.
Now I really enjoyed this book in the series. Filled with humor, togetherness, terrific plotline and the characters you come to know and adore throughout this book set. I truly love these feel good tales and you'll find yourself reacting like you just finished a warm cup of soup after a very cold day. One final note....that darn cat (smile).
I have read the first 4 books on Billbury. They are very well written and I can't wait to find out what will happen next. You can see all of the characters. Easy reading and a pleasure. Now onto the next.
Wonderful, heartwarming and emotional read. You will be entangled in the lives of easy going characters, and of beautiful simple living. The scenery is described well, makes a person want to live in a country town like Bilbury too.
This book made me feel so aggravated with the things going on! I just wanted to yell, "Get out! Just tell them to get out!" It was amusing, but really got my anxiety going... *laughs*
Another fantastic read! The story was well written and humorous throughout! Can't wait to indulge myself into the next book after this! Love, love, love, love!!!
Keeping the village safe from outsiders who want "to develop" the village in to a huge tourist trap is foiled by the local residents. Funny and charming.
I've read just about all of the Bilbury County books by Dr. Vernon Coleman. They are such fun and while they can be read as stand alones, I recommend you read them in order.
As an American, I particularly enjoy the countryside descriptions. I can't imagine someone allowing you to keep their sheep because it kept wandering over into your pasture (described in a different book, but his sheep are mentioned here).
Dr. Coleman did everyone a favor when he decided not to practice medicine, but to write. Having read some of his other works, I can say he really is just fabulous.
Another very enjoyable book overall, although I do feel like the gets a little preachy and grumpy in parts. Again, I don't know how much of this is true, but if the tourists really behaved the way they do in the book I am horrified. The last big scene in the book with the nudist protesters and the policeman was a lot of fun to read, and I definitely want to see what happens next.

I loved the first four books in this series, but then the series peters out into collections of short stories which must have appeared in magazines of the period. So...enjoy the ongoing saga of the young doctor and his wife until he turns into an old doctor and doesn't have nearly as much fun anymore.
I have enjoyed reading all of these books. The people in the book are likeable, devious in a mischievous way but big in caring for their village and friends
This series will keep you reading every spare moment! Wonderful characters, interesting challenges and many humorous escapades... A winning combination!
Much like James Herriot's English country vet this delightful series follows a small English village with wonderful characters that just simply leave you feeling good!
These books make you want to move to a small town & hope the residents are as wonderful as these characters. Funny, sweet, frustrating & sad, just like real life.
I have read four of these books. I cannot believe that Vernon Coleman sees life in such an orderly manner. Each book reminds me that we make our lives much too intricate. He also is very inciteful about people's lives without being critical about the aspect in which they make their life's decisions' Too often today, we humans seem to believe that our thoughts and philosophies are more important that most other humans. Judgment is not something to be brought down by every time someone makes a decision in life. Observation is a major tool. I also like his presentation of problem solving in everyday events.
The Young Country Doctor seems to be mature beyond his years.
A fun book. The series itself is enjoyable. A country doctor finds himself an author as his office is closed due to politics. He and his wife have purchased a dilapidated home (even though they have little money) and have adventures trying to restore it, being members of their community (a lot of unique and fun characters), trying to find enough work being an author to pay the bills, and running a farm.
The author has written it so you feel immersed in this series and start to feel like you know it's characters. Can't wait to start the next one.
