Lady Jane and Aunt Kate stop at Winthrop Castle for a quick overnight visit to elderly family friends who will not be able to make it to Lady Jane’s wedding. Talk at meals revolve around a lost fortune hidden somewhere in the castle which many say is just a myth. After breakfast the next morning since they needn’t leave until a late morning, they take some time to explore the medieval castle and while doing that discover that a man working on the roof has died. Everything points to an accident or perhaps a suicide until it is learned that his brother was murder that morning also. The local police are certain that it was the first man who murdered his brother and then committed suicide out of remorse. But, of course, Lady Jane and Kate see things differently.
With Lady Jane’s parents and fiancé expecting their arrival before tea time, how much time do they have to try and solve the mystery?
Inspector Ridley from Scotland Yard makes an appearance as does Peregrine Nash.
The village of Culbury has no shortage of people who are not sorry to learn of the death of the older brother as Lady Jane and Kate learn while being the eyes and ears of Lord Winthrop talking to people. Fortunately for the reader, it isn’t hard to keep all the names of the many characters straight. All of the characters were nicely developed and stayed true to their temperaments.
The story is delightful. The timeline is something rarely seen in a mystery novel. It kept me engaged and made the book hard to put down. Thanks to Lady Jane’s conversations with Kate, the reader painlessly learns some history while enjoying a cozy mystery.
I always worry a bit when I get to the end of a book, but was encourage by THE END (Until Next Time…) and the notice that there will be two more titles coming in 2026. I am eagerly awaiting the release dates so I don’t miss anything.

Lady Jane should be preparing for her wedding but when a mystery drops in her lap she’s set to investigate instead. A stop at historical Winthrop Castle to see some elderly relatives is supposed to be just a pleasant diversion. The castle is rumored to hold a long lost treasure and Aunt Kate is keen to search the secret passages to find it. Instead they discover a dead handyman in the moat and learn his brother has been killed in the village. The local police have a theory of the crime and are not interested in Kate and Jane’s input. Thankfully, Inspector Ridley is sent in from Scotland Yard and encourages our heroines in sleuthing. Can they track down a killer and get to Jane’s wedding on time?
Another thoroughly engaging historical mystery from B D Churston. Aunt Kate and her niece, Lady Jane, are intelligent and likeable heroines with good investigative skills. The setting is well described and fitting to the mystery. The victims were not well liked in the village giving plenty of viable suspects to choose from. I was kept guessing throughout and had the wrong suspect in mind until the end reveal. I enjoyed meeting Lord and Lady Winthrop and loved Lord Winthrop’s eclectic collection. And of course we get Lady Jane’s and Harry’s wedding at the end. Looking forward to more in this series, especially Kate and Perry’s future nuptials.
