But He's a Carter Brother #2

But He's My One Regret

Rate this book
I like to live my life with no regrets. The only exception? Levi Carter.

Five years ago we met on vacation and fell into an innocent flirtationship.

And like all the women in cliche romance novels–I’d know since I read them obsessively–I fell in love.

Then I promptly chickened out of admitting my way-too-soon-red-flag-feelings and left Levi behind, with nothing but his first name to remember him by.

I thought I’d never see him again, but then I walk into my new job as a police department therapist and … there he is.

He’s tall, handsome, and totally off-limits. Dating detectives is definitely against the rules, but Levi seems determined to break them.

But He’s My One Regret is a second chance, forbidden love romcom. It has all the sizzling chemistry you love, without any explicit scenes. Check out the second book in the But He’s a Carter Brother Series, a series based around four strong, protective brothers finding love

I’m just not typically a fan of a woman having to tell a man over and over again that she can’t get involved with him and him continuing to pursue her anyway. I get the whole “forbidden romance” trope is popular, but it only works if both parties want to take the risk. Dahlia didn’t want to (and couldn’t!) lose her job by getting involved with someone she works with / has to council and Levi still invited her out, bought her flowers that were sent to work, called her by a nickname at work, texted her constantly, etc. It’s not that I didn’t like the characters… I just wish their story hadn’t involved this dynamic. It didn’t work well because therapists have additional standards when it comes to boundaries… much more-so than just a typical coworker relationship and that wasn’t respected. Then when Levi has an issue and Dahlia needs to actually be his therapist, after setting all these boundaries, she was just like, “Nah nevermind. Let’s date.” I was like, “Wait what!?”

Ummm excuse me?! Why is this book not talked about more?!
Listen, I LOVE Adrian & Grayson as much as the next girl…but Levi Carter?! *insert puddle here* Y’all this man is NEXT LEVEL!

This book was next level! Take every preconceived notion you have about romance novels and throw them in the shredder. This book had the swoon (DO NOT GET ME WRONG!) but it had so much more than that!
Tackling such under appreciated & under represented careers with such grace and heart was such a move…and a GREAT one!

You could feel every emotion (the good, the bad, the ugly, the hesitation, just all the things) and it just oozed off the page in a way that MADE ME keeping flipping the pages.

Dahlia’s growth was TOP NOTCH! They always say doctors make the worst patients, but seeing her finally taking her own advice to LIVE AND BOT JUST SURVIVE again was BEAUTIFUL!

All of the growth. All of the healing. All of the grief. All of the family. All of the laughter. All of the tears. All of the love.

Just plain amazing!

Oh my goodness, we all need a Carter brother like Levi in our lives! He’s sweet, thoughtful, and totally head over heels for Dahlia—it’s just the cutest thing ever!

This book was a quick and adorable read. Levi and Dahlia’s chemistry is off the charts, and their whole “let’s just be friends” thing? Yeah, we all know how that’s going to end! The bookshop scene? Chef’s kiss! You’ll want to read it on repeat.

The Carter family is just the best! They love with their whole hearts and make everyone feel like family.

This book had me laughing, happy crying, and grinning like crazy. It’s total perfection!

After Adrian & Juliette’s story, I wasn’t sure I could love a Carter brother story as much, but Levi & Dahlia were cute!

(I have to confess it threw me off a bit reading a book with a male MC sharing a name with my younger brother, but it also made me chuckle.)

The flashbacks between present day and when Levi & Dahlia met really set the stage and laid groundwork. It highlighted not only how good Levi & Dahlia are together but also how they’ve changed, too. Dahlia is afraid to let Levi in for fear of losing him. Levi has tried to be enough for everyone. Strong enough for this siblings, good enough for his job. But it’s never *felt* like enough. Both are grappling with grief, but grief isn’t linear. It’s hard & messy & takes time and support.

I adore police/crime drama, so the police therapist & police detective angle was so much fun! Plus, Annah tackled the stigma of mental health in the police workplace in a healthy way. I did feel like Levi was a bit *too intense* at times. I love his small acts of kindness, but Dahlia’s reluctance to start a relationship (due to work issues) did make sense so his persistence felt heavy handed at times. That aside, they really are made for each other.

Watching the Carter family embrace Dahlia and Jasmine made me so emotional. It was beautiful and heartfelt and just… ahh, so precious! 😭

Annah Conwell knows how to write a romance that melts your heart. I just love everything she writes!! 😍😍😍 But He’s My One Regret was absolutely amazing and I adored Levi and Dahlia’s chemistry! I liked how we got a few flashbacks to when they first met each other. But Annah doesn’t just write romance books. She writes books with emotion and deep topics that make you feel for and love the characters all the more. My heart ached for Levi and Dahlia and everything they were dealing with. 😭 As always, the Carter siblings were a blast and made me laugh on several occasions. 🤣🤣 I grinned so big when I found out that Grayson’s books is next!! I can’t wait!

If you like clean/closed-door romances with humor, fun and lovable characters, deep thoughts, swoony guys, and a sweet and beautiful romance, you should read But He’s My One Regret (and the author’s other books)!! 🤩

Dahlia is a therapist recently hired by a police station and Levi is a detective there. I loved the second chance workplace romance that quickly melted into a pile of blurred lines and swoon.

The dual narration delighted me and I was swiftly enchanted by the Carter family and the whole cast of characters. I loved the depth and emotion that was presented, but as usual, it was the alluring romantic interactions that put a zing in my heart.

I was discussing rom-coms with my book club the other night and mentioned that I finally figured out what makes a romantic story work for me. You’re gonna love this reason, it’s utterly sexy:

PLAUSIBILITY.

Look, I get it. At some level, romances in books are predicated on fantasy (unlikely people falling in love) and tropes (“I’d cross the ocean just to kiss you”), so exaggerated scenarios are not out of place. I’m certainly not asking a genre to behave unnaturally! And some of these elements–like witty banter as it only seems to be found in books!–are stupendous.

Which brings me to Annah Conwell. I have thoroughly enjoyed my reading of “But He’s My Grumpy Neighbor” and now “But He’s My One Regret” (released just yesterday and available on KU)– four stars to both! What works so *plausibly* in both of these Carter brother books is the sweet gestures, the book love, and the supporting cast around the two lovebirds. I mean, sweet, self-sacrificing men with melt-you-to-a-puddle good looks and funny leading ladies who love books, with a side of overcoming trauma and finding home with a new family? Sign me up!

SWEET, BUT

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I enjoyed this one, it’s got a good instant connection vibe and I am smitten with Levi. I thought the flashback chapters were sweet and helped show case the beginning of their relationship before they found each other again.

But I did struggle with some of the plot aspects. And even as I’m writing this I’m realizing a few other things that were never fully explained. The forbidden romance wasn’t all the way there (especially with how easy everything worked out) and I was confused by Dahlia being so incredibly stubborn. The book needed a bit more length for some explanations.

I like Annah Conwell’s writing style and I love this whole cast. I love a big family who look out for each other. There’s good friendships, a good sister relationship and some sweet moments that bring the swoon.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: very brief gun violence, grief depiction, mentions of loss of parents

I was a little let down by this book, unfortunately. I had pretty high expectations because I’ve really enjoyed the other two books I’ve read from Annah, but this one had some elements I dislike in any book.

My main issues were the insta-love and disrespect of boundaries. Even though they knew each other previously, it just felt like their relationship moved little too fast for my personal taste. I felt like Levi spent a lot of time just focusing on Dahlia's appearance instead of her character which made it hard for me to see how they connected as a couple. Another thing that really bothered me was how Levi ignored her requests to keep their relationship on a professional, friendly level. I just feel like there are other ways to get to know someone without crossing her boundaries.

I definitely will read more from Annah; this one just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I can't wait for Grayson's story. :)

Loved this book overall and enjoyed reading Levi and Dahlia's story. I loved all of Levi's small acts of showing how much he cared and that he falls first.

I love Dahlia for how much she loves her sister and for how she wants to take care of others.

Great addition to the series! I loved seeing Levi’s perspective and seeing his growth over the book. I love the sisterly relationship between Dahlia and Jasmine. It was great seeing past characters and the found family elements.

Read this one if you like second chance, work place RomCom with a little more depth. And of course if you like anything that Annah Conwell has written.

Thanks to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

2.5 Stars.

The vibes:
- second chance
- Dual pov
- Instalove
- Grief rep
- Duel timeline

My thoughts: (no spoilers in this portion. Spoilers at the very end and headlined as such.)

The short version: I should have known myself better and maybe skipped this one. I truly believe this is a case of “it’s not you, it’s me”. As soon as I saw it was about a detective and the police department’s therapist- I was very uncomfortable with that concept. But I thought maybe the situation would not be what I thought and maybe it wouldn’t feel ethically icky to me. I give this book 2.5 stars but I give myself 1 star for jumping into a territory I knew would be dicey for me. So I mostly blame myself here.

So let’s get into the long story:

It started really cute between Levi and Dahlia. I loved their interactions together. There was a big focus on therapy (as that is the FMC’s occupation). I was fine with the therapy rep- I love it. My problem arises when Levi becomes Dahlia’s “patient”. I already have a tough go with workplace romances but with a therapist and client- I was just super uncomfortable the entire time.

I struggle with workplace romances where one party says no and tries to maintain professional boundaries and the other party ignores all protests and continues in strong pursuit. I get the “forbidden romance” vibe and I actually do like it in some situations but I only like it when both parties are totally on board and ready for all the risks and consequences. This was not the case here. Dahlia said no repeatedly (while also leading him on and being completely two sided) and Levi continued pursuing her with romance (probably because Dahlia was all over the place saying one thing and doing another.)

This is totally my personal preference and I know a ton of readers are not bothered by this. If this isn’t something that will bother you- I think you will love this book. Unfortunately it just didn’t land quite right for me, and I ended up really disliking Dahlia by the middle of the story. 😞

The good news is that I still love Annah Conwell. I truly love her writing and her other books that I have read. This one is just a blip for me and I will absolutely continue reading and loving this author.

🚨 ‼️ Spoilery rant coming up. ‼️ 🚨
I was very bothered by Dahlia. Dahlia is in absolutely no place to be a therapist to Levi. At all. Ever. I will die on this hill. She insisted that she and Levi only be professional (which I respect and admire considering her position and his). But then as he continues crossing the lines (which also bothered me a lot, Levi)- she fully leans into it. Ok fine. They text. Call. Flirt. Hang out. She sends him hearts in their messages. He calls her beautiful and other nicknames. This is full on dating, people. And then when he wants more - she’s like- Excuse me but we need to only be friends like we have been. And I’m like excuse ME. That is neither professional nor “just friends”. So I felt like she was just lying to herself and also everyone else.

I wasn’t pleased with her lack of consequences. I wasn’t pleased with Levi’s magic mental health turn around after finally winning over Dahlia. I feel like his PTSD needed so much more to heal than getting a girlfriend and having one real conversation with his family. All of it just left me feeling sad.

This second-chance, workplace romance is rich in realistic struggles, so much banter and fun, all the feels, and tension for days. With a therapist for an FMC and an officer for the MMC it hits home in the best of ways with the healthy emotional relationship rep AND addressing trauma in a healthy manner—somehow without getting too heavy. I am here for it.

(TW: character are processing trauma from past loss of loved ones and work-related trauma as an officer—maintains a romcom feel.)

Absolutely loved this story!

This was my first book by this author, but I can promise it won’t be my last! The story captured me from the beginning and was just so good, I enjoyed every moment. I love the dual point of view, the depth to each character and details included, the different relationships throughout, and of course the swoony and passionate love that ran throughout the story. It was just so good!!

synopsis.
the story follows dahlia, who meets levi on vacation and they hit it off. she falls for him but gets cold feet and leaves without a trace. five years later, she starts a new job as a therapist at a police department, only to find out levi is a detective there. even though workplace relationships are a no-go, levi isn’t ready to lose her again.

my thoughts.
i loved how much levi was willing to give just to win her heart little by little. i love men who know what they want and work for it. even though it was a short book, i really enjoyed it.

i think it’s crazy that this series isn’t more well-known. i’m definitely reading more from this author. i’m so excited to read the next books about the carter brothers.

tropes.
- second chance
- workplace romance
- “friends” to lovers.
- forced proximity
- found family
- closed doors.

I'm going to give this book 3.75 stars JUST because I'm a sucker for slowburn romance (que the conflict of battling with feelings) and it felt like the main guy was super intense from chapter one...
It wasn't cringe or weird it just I don't know, felt a bit too intense and rushed. But, despite that, I liked it so so much! Ugh Annah Conwell is now one of my favorite romance authors fr. The main characters and their backstories and lives were beautifully written. Prison therapist and Detective romance? Obsessed. All the forbbiden love, millionaire detective, she falls first but he falls harder vibes, all the sibling squad drama, beautiful family dynamics with DREAM in-law family. It was so good and cozy and easy to read.
I RECOMMEND.

Content warnings:
Death, some gun violence (given the nature of the MC's job), some semi descriptive kissing focused on feelings (easy to skip if it bothers you).

Omg I totally LOVED everything about this book. I loved book 1 in the series and I’m so excited that book 2 also really sparked enjoyment for me. Levi and Dahlia find second chance romance after 5 years apart. I loved how she’s a book lover and she turned Levi into a book reader too. 🥲🩵

I definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes second chance romance, sibling banter, and a bookish couple.

CW: “There are discussion of grief, parental death, homicide investigations, life of a homicide detective, mentions of PTSD, minor mentions of violence that happens off page.” Authors content warning page.

4.5 ⭐️

Levi being down BAD made this book a giggle fest. Dahlia was a very raw character who had struggles but faced them head-on like a baddie. Her best friend was the realest for calling her out again and again on her feelings. Also almost cried at some parts and did not see that coming—the found family aspect just gets sweeter and sweeter with each book.

And Graysonnnn? He is a top tier wingman and such a funny character. I cannot wait for his book, it was set up a little towards the end of this one and I just know it is going to HIT.

ARC Review:

I have absolutely no idea how to start talking about this book. I am obsessed with it. The characters are some of my favorite characters in the world, the whole Carter family is incredible. I wish I could be friends with them!
This book was just perfection.
Pure perfection.
The romance was beautifully written and perfect. The struggles in this book felt real and relatable but not hopeless. The family dynamic these characters have with their families warms my heart so much. I giggled so much while reading, also teared up a few times, and was smiling constantly!
I cannot recommend this book enough!
Something else that I found so fun about this book were the little Taylor Swift references:) sometimes it was a song lyric or title, intentional or not, it was still so fun!
Truly, truly love this series with my whole heart! Annah is definitely my newest auto buy author!
I highly, highly recommend!
