Rate this book
An alpha male meets his match…

Feisty, fearless deputy sheriff Kathlene Baylor is not the submissive type. When she detects suspicious behavior on the outskirts of her Montana town, she's first to investigate. And when her own department refuses to take the anarchist threat seriously, she calls in the military. Little does she know the team assigned to her is not your average task force.

Shapeshifter Jock Larabey is part of the top secret Alpha Force dispatched to the scene. He's also the sexiest man Kathlene has ever laid eyes on. And when she catches him shifting, she finds herself more aroused than scared. Jock feels the same way, and can't control it for much longer. As the danger escalates, so does their desire….

Kathlene is a deputy sheriff who suspects a group of men, who have moved in to her town, are in the process of doing illegal activities. No one listens to her (she's a woman, and this is a theme among the Sheriff- he doesn't like woman who have opinions). So, she calls in an outside party to help investigate- Alpha Force. Alpha Force happens to be an elite military group made up of shifters and plain old people. Jock is the shifter in the duo that meets at her town.
This wasn't bad, but it wasn't awesome either. It kept me entertained. I thought the wrap-up happened fast and would have liked more suspense (there isn't much). I was glad that Kathlene was smart and could more than hold her own against the sexist Sheriff.

When there seems to be something amiss in a typical community in Montana, one woman will not let others keep her from following through on a secret investigation. When the heroine asks for assistance, she had no idea those sent in to help would use abilities which she thought were only fictional. Now it is a race against time for an Alpha Force member and a deputy sheriff to stop radical thinking men from disrupting her town and possibly harming its residents. Linda O. Johnston knows how to skillfully blend the supernatural with ordinary occurrences to make her latest Alpha Force story constantly convincing. LOYAL WOLF is so compellingly realistic that I want to believe such a courageous military unit actually exists.

No one on the police force really thinks the large group of individuals gathering on a nearby ranch is anything but ordinary hunters, except for one female officer. Though Kathlene Baylor is repeatedly told to stop suggesting they could be anarchists, she decides the only way to prove any of her claims is to get help from an outside source. When two men are sent to her town, their cover story states one of them was a good friend she once knew. But her first reaction upon meeting Jock Larabey is more like he is her former lover, not just an acquaintance.

Although Kathlene knows Jock belongs to a military unit called Alpha Force, she does not realize many of its members are much different than your ordinary soldier. He is one of several werewolves on the covert team, and his enhanced capabilities will be valuable when he investigates her allegations. Kathlene thinks Jock is rather mysterious at times, and she does not plan to let him leave her out of any of their missions. When his biggest secret is accidentally revealed, she is surprisingly drawn even closer to commanding man.

Linda O. Johnston makes her latest Alpha Force hero someone who is not only extremely tempting but courageous as well. Jock is someone who knows how he wants a mission carried out, and keeping others safe is always foremost in his mind. His protectiveness of Kathlene is obvious, and her retorts about her own abilities made me smile. Their relationship is explosively fiery when keeping their desires under control fails, and Ms. Johnston makes every moment of their time together sincerely genuine. Concerns about the other are candidly depicted, while their inner feelings are cleverly shown through any responses. Jock and Kathlene let nothing intimidate them, causing their conversations to often be particularly animated.

The threats in the story are all too real, as there are always people who disagree with how they are governed. What is exactly going on is very well handled by the author, as clues about who and what are slowly divulged. Any paranormal elements are continuously plausible, as Ms. Johnston has created an exceedingly fascinating world of supernatural beings. The behavior of those who become werewolves is truly intriguing, and some of their canine reactions certainly caused some laughs. Linda O. Johnston continues to make her Alpha Force miniseries one of my favorites, as her shape-shifters are always charming and definitely attention-grabbing. LOYAL WOLF captivates with dynamic characters and enthralling adventures.

Kathlene Baylor, deputy sheriff in a Montana town... and she sees trouble - an anarchist group taking up residence; and she calls the father of a schoolmate, who sends Jock Larabey, of Alpha Force

They spend a bit too much time at cross purposes... yes I'm going to join you, no we're going to investigate on our own... but eventually she sees him shift (when she's hiding out to see what they're up to)... and she takes it in stride...

and they take down the bad guys... and Alpha Force is making a place for Kathlene...

Weakest story in the series so far. Not overly impressed Kathlene. She is appears to be relatively one dimensional. Loved Jock most of the time. Maybe it was story line. I mean every other page was anarchists this and anarchists that.
