Him

Rate this book
She’d met him at a chance encounter in an upscale bar in downtown Los Angeles. And then she’d did what many women do: she took a short cut to love. Before long she is lost in a haze of passion and desire and longing. Rarely are their trysts planned, but this much she knew: he owned her life. She had long given up her rights to it. And with his possession of her life, she had lost her self.

*ARC kindly provided in exchange for honest review*

This book does not have a name for the lead male, nor the lead female, nor the spare wheel. What you will be reading is like this:
The lead male: HIM.
The spare wheel in the love triangle: THE BOY.
So it's HIM and THE BOY. No names.
WARNING: Spoilers follow
When a woman is so needy and desperate to get a man's attention that she has to call and leave a message of her having an orgasm...I just don't know. That was kinda the beginning of the end for me and this book. All I kept reading about was WANTING and NEEDING, but there was never a reason why.
The Good, Bad, and Ugly...
The biggest thing that killed this book for me was the lead female's constant reference to HIM. I'm serious. She always called him, HIM, in capital letters. And I hate quoting people, but every time I read "I wanted HIM" or "I was thinking about HIM" the only thing that came to mind was a little movie called Superbad, and Michael Cera's voice: "Who are you, Seal?"

"Your breasts are so round and full..." He said.
"I know." I said. "Oh my God, please make love to my tits."

The sex scenes were atrocious. Ladies, I'm not saying this lightly. If you are looking for a J.R. Ward, E.L. James, Sylvia Day type of deal, then look elsewhere. What you get is a paragraph, a lot of movements, but nothing remotely sexy.
The man (HIM) is supposed to be 40, yet he comes across as a 14-year-old boy whose just had his first orgasm.
Insert, text messages.
HIM: OMG. I luv the photo. Totally hard 4 you. I have to fuck you now!
ME: Be my guest.
Honestly, I was waiting for:

Conclusion: It was a HOT mess.
1) Monotone voices.
2) 33 year old woman, fuckin THE BOY, and HIM...BOY is 20, HIM is 40 something...
3) Oh Cool! Wow! OMG! (Lots of those words in this...)

4) HIM: Gtta Go. Fuck you later
5) Most common word: Yes. And it came from lead female. (Nope, she doesn't have a name either, seriously.) Anytime HIM would ask her to do something, she's all "Yes."
I gotta stop here. It's ridiculous. Terrible. *Pinches bridge of nose* I'm over this review. Too much is wrong with this book to name. Read at your own risk.

Only made it 13% into the story before I just couldn't take it anymore more. The lack of names and genuine interaction made the book super boring. wish id read the reviews before requesting this book.

sorry for the spoilers!

I finished this 2 days ago & have been putting off trying to write the review as I just don't know what to say or what rating to give it... so glad that I had a great weekend away while reading this, otherwise I'm sure I would have ditched it

an extremely predictable story, with very juvenile writing/characters.

it's written almost like a diary, she starts off & says she knows when it started bla bla bla, it was when she met HIM, & then we're back to where they met & continues from there, back to the present.

for the entirety of the story we have a few characters, most of who remain nameless. there's the girl telling the story, HIM (yes, HIM in capitals), THE BOY, Sam - her neighbour/friend/father figure, & her bestie Rebecca, & also her ex Jake. we never ever find out HIM's name, neither do we find out THE BOY's name. almost at the very end & we finally find out the main girl's name is Lila, Rebecca named her baby lily after her friend Lila...

I found this to be very juvenile. she's meant to be 34ish & everything about her screams childish, I was waiting for her to do the whole giggly "he said penis" thing. & the writing... they went to HIM's hotel room!!! seriously??!! it couldn't have been HIS hotel room??

anyone with half a brain cell could see that HIM didn't give two shits about her, he was simply using her as a matter of convenience. yes, they had a physical connection, but on his part there was no emotion involved & simply told her whatever he needed to keep her on side & at his disposal. she apparently hates what's going on, so she heads off & does the exact same thing to THE BOY.

HIM finally has enough of her shit after making it fairly clear they didn't have a "relationship", & leaves her arse. she goes into full meltdown mode, before finally getting her shit together & leading a normal, happy life with her new partner (yes he had a name, but I can't remember it & can't be bothered looking it up). but the kicker - she still fantasises about HIM!
*shakes head* some people just never learn...

ARC received from Netgalley.

I'm sorry! I hate giving books under a 3 star rating as I know how much time and love is put into them...but I just couldn't mark this any higher.
I thought it sounded like a story that would catch my attention but it sadly failed. Im not even sure at this point exactly what happened in the story. She spent one night with a guy,and then spent the rest of the story being obsessed with him...and I'm not sure why! It was never explained why she was obsessed other than the sex...and even then it never seemed that great. If it was the control he had then he didn't show that side enough for me. He seemed like a bully more than a Dom. And THE BOY (yes that's what he's called) was suddenly in her life and they were having an affair! And when HIM came back he just walked out! And I am not sure what the obsession with her breasts are...that threw me a bit!

I was just left slightly confused by this story and I scanned and skipped a lot of this book...maybe I read about 40% of it.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for an honest review. This book was a solid attempt at a fun erotic tryst turned into obsession. Then it became an illustration of mental health at some point. Then it became me checking the number of pages left because I had checked out and when a book is that short, that is never a good sign.

I can see where someone that just lost their family and meets a hot lawyer in a bar can become obsessed. Heck, the hot lawyer became obsessed. But, throw in an odd relationship with the landlord/father figure, a college sophomore, a pregnant cat, strange disengagement from life/work reality soon turn into a very odd obsession. THEN....as soon as it started it was over and I. for one, was ok with that.

"I slept with a man I'd known for less than an hour.It wouldn't have been the first time nor the last."

If your looking for something different, something to take you into a roller coaster ride, a passion without limits, than this is it, this is your book.
Written in the first person, this story sinks beneath your skin, an intimate tale to hear in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night.

After having slept with a stranger, our lady becomes attached to HIM and from there forward her life is controlled by HIM.
Full of passion and very steamy sex, her days are filled with a never ending yearning for his touch and presence but as they walk through the stages of control and new experiences the sorrow of being at his mercy starts to beat up a heart that held promise of a true relationship.
Will HIM control her and keep her ?

Ms. Scott wrote a fabulous book taking us on a journey to hell and back.
With beautiful quotes that accompanies us through out the book, we get a hot detailed relationship of a woman on the verge of going over the cliff, boarding the depths of obsession and grief and heartache for a man that reigns in sex and control.

"So what was a nice woman like myself doing having sex with a stranger ?"

For those that understand that sometimes we find in life what we're not looking for but get it anyway, "HIM" is an example of what not to take up even if it feels so good ....

***I received an ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.***

This was an interesting book with a new take and writing style and definitely has some hot and steamy weaved through out the story. The obsession and emotions that are in this book was difficult for me to connect to, which might be why I didn't fall in love with the story and why I don;t have very much to write about.
Over all not a horrible book or a complete waste of time, but not my cup of tea. I think for women who like fast pace romances with struggles and emotion and a bit of weird, dark and twistyness, this could be a bit more enjoyable for you.

I read this book on the plane and WOW... Lets just say I was turned on to say the least ! This is a very erotic book about fantasy and expressing your feelings. I was a little embarrassed reading it on the plane...but it was an awesome book, and made the flight go by in a flash ! I also attacked my husband when I got home...lol

For some reason I was not able to get on with this book. It didn't seem to have the pull that some other books have.

The blurb is good but once you got down to reading the book, it just didn't do it for me.

Any woman who at some point in its life has been involved in a messy relationship with imbalance of power could identified itself. Along with the obsession, chaos, destruction and pain than generate and how difficult is to try to end the path from self-destruction: That's what it's about this story.

This story is NOT erotica (I would classify it more within the genre: "Women's fiction"). Not because the story revolves around a sexual affair means it is erotica ... I think the writer does us a disservice classifying it as such, because the story is more about following the consequences of emotional dynamics that are intertwined with sex, instead of hot sex scenes. And due to wrong categorization this book hardly will satisfy those readers looking for erotica with steamy sex, certain degree of romance and HEA between the protagonists, and neither will reach readers who might appreciate it (among other things because of the psychological and emotional aspects involved during the sexual relation).

The heroine of this book was tragic (she even sees some parallels with Anna Karenina) and takes a lot of stupid decisions and act upon, but she is very human with tons of unresolved—essentially—emotional issues. And she was left very, very vulnerable after the death of her mother. And as a defense mechanism against the loss of her mother retreated from everything that was important (even push away his best friend and fiancée, until the relationship was destroyed because of she). And under this drift and emotional spiral she finds HIM.

I've read some reviews criticizing the fact that the writer never gives a name to HIM, and remains vague onto everything about HIM, but THAT'S one important point of the story !!! All significant people in the life of the heroine DO have names (she also has a name, but is revealed only until near the end), because...

Interesting reading—neither erotic, nor romantic—with a realistic ending (even somehow a happy one, huh?) that shows the resilience from the heroine.

Some readers may not be able to relate to this tale at all because they have never found themselves obsessed by a relationship that threatens to become destructive. Yet the author’s fresh style promises an easy read and many people are going to enjoy this book simply for the eroticism and unexpected dramatic twists and turns. I also found the book amusing, though perhaps mostly in a “this is all so painful you just gotta laugh” sort of way.

As I read the opening chapters, I began to feel impatient and hoped the female protagonist would just drop the guy. “Hey lady”, I thought to myself, “might you not simply ask yourself, “maybe he’s just not that into me?” Then Cecilia Scott took the story farther… and once I could see where she was going, I was hooked.

The story is disturbing but engrossing as the lead character goes from enjoying an ego fulfilling romp, to hoping that her deep sexual connection might lead to a deep emotional one, to her being consumed, not only by her emotional and sexual attachment, but by her need to lose herself in her obsession. I wonder if many readers will find themselves, as I did, affected by this story longer than they might have expected.

The author keeps it light enough that some readers will just get lost in the romance and sexual imagery but others will feel it as a punch to the gut. The dark turn the story takes is what I found most fascinating. It can be torment when you find yourself emotionally and sexually tied to someone, and then realize that, not only are they not able to love you but, in fact, are capable of just turning their back on you and moving on. Yet you find you still feel a deep love for them as well as a bond that can, perhaps, last forever.

The physical connection can go so deep. Some may think it is mostly superficial unless there is long lasting trust and emotional commitment. But for some the desire to give up control and the lack of commitment may be the bond that keeps them enthralled. This is pretty heady stuff to confront.

Enjoy the journey! What a story! I look forward to the next offering from Ms. Scott.

Some sexual encounters can be brutal to the body and soul of a person

HIM what can I say about this story after reading it. I know for sure that once I started I could not stop. I needed to know what in the world she was doing to herself and why. I totally get it that his sexual appetite totally consumed her; the dominance that he unleashed was powerful. But the part that had me totally puzzled was how she allowed him to treat her like she was nothing. I wanted to slap her a couple of times because she was not listening to the people that cared about her and told her that what HE was doing was not sane. HE was sucking the light out of her life. I don’t know how she was able to continue being with HIM he was so secretive and I knew he would never go through with his promises. I liked the ending of the story but I could still tell that he still had power over her.

My desire was to LOVE this book, but I really struggled to stay focused. My primary distraction was the constant ‘HIM’ reference through out the story line. Not wanting to give up, I tried skimming through the pages to try and find some kind of connection with the characters as others readers have clearly done with no luck. Although I did flip through the remaining pages to determine what happened, I would not consider this a book I finished reading.

I read "Him" in one sitting and found it equally sexy and daunting. I've been in a relationship like this before. You get entirely drawn in to the intrigue but ultimately it is about getting lost along the way. It's an excellent portrayal of being involved with a narcissist. He'll never give you what you want or need but you throw caution to the wind and proceed anyway. Kudos to Cecilia Scott for her insight. I hope she'll write a sequel...

really not sure what I thought about this book. The story line was a bit dragged out. In some places I felt like pulling my hair out. this book doesnt have lead names and that seems to annoy me a bit. The story line was ok I just thought it needed a bit more

Received as ARC from netgalley. Unfortunately I am wholly unimpressed with the continual usage of the title and the writing style lacks a lot. Sorry but it just wasn't an impressive read
