For Jake Landry, Erin Shaw was always off-limits—too young, too innocent, and his kid sister’s best friend. Home now after a decade of military service, Jake finds Erin all grown up...but she’s still off-limits. War has left him with scars invisible to anyone but him, and a relationship is the last thing he’s looking for.
As a teenager, Erin had a hopeless crush on her friend’s big brother. Now that she’s an adult, she thinks she’s put all that behind her. But when she sees Jake again, she discovers her old feelings are alive and well...and blossoming into something new.
Jake doesn’t believe in happily-ever-after. And since he can’t give Erin what she deserves, he tries to stay away from her. But when the attraction between them turns explosive, his resistance starts to crumble. Will Erin find a way past Jake’s armor, all the way to his heart?
This is a new release of a previously published edition.
Abigail Strom started writing stories at the age of seven and has never been able to stop. She lives in New England with her family, a variety of animals, and a towering TBR pile. She loves to hear from readers and can be reached at abigail@abigailstrom.com.
I read everything, but I especially love YA, MG, mystery, romance, sci fi, and fantasy.
I think I liked this book the least in the series, the writing was good but the romance was lack-lustre somehow. For most of the book the h/H aren't even together and I just didn't feel the hero much, he didn't seem great at all, not that he was bad, what I am trying to say is, he never felt like a hero.
So, the story is the heroine has always had a crush on the hero and then he comes back changed after he left the army, he seems empty and tries to avoid his family. Things heat up between them one day but he backs off since he is in no mental frame to start something and she agrees with him and tries dating, but somehow they spend one night together and he races off to deal with things.
She gets pregnant, doesn't tell him, but plans to, six months later he is back, wants to take responsibility but she wants love. I don't mind reading tried and tested stories because honestly it is the treatment that matters but my standards were raised high by her other books & this was mediocre.
This book follows the story of Jake, an ex-military man who'd been through so much, seen so much that he's convinced there's nothing left of him to give; no love, no kindness, no heart. Erin had known him since they were kids, and for as long as she could remember, she'd harboured feelings from him that had nothing to do with brotherly love. When they finally meet up again, the chemistry between them was truly undeniable. Erin knew at once that there was an intense pain lurking behind Jake's eyes which only strenghtened the pull she felt toward him. But she had to let him go, help himself before she could even entertain the thought of a future with him.
This was a sad, romantic tale of a broken man suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Jake struggled to come back to the world of the living after going through harrowing experiences of being in military service. Because this wasn't a lengthy book, I felt that Jake's illness wasn't really explored. And I felt that this created a barrier between Jake himself and the reader reading this book. I found it lack the needed empathy to fully experience what Jake was going through. I couldn't feel his desperate need to help himself so he could be free of his nightmares. I also felt that this moved fast - too fast and I'm not talking about the relationship between him and Erin. I thought that the nightmares weren't that traumatizing. I mean, don't get me wrong, watching your friends die in front of your eyes were disturbing to say the least, but I felt that there was some sort of emotional disconnect with Jake as he told the tales of his experience. I wish Ms. Strom delved much deeper into his psyche.
Perhaps the author's intent was to focus the story on the romance, in which case, I thought she did splendidly well. Erin and Jake's immediate connection worked, all thanks to a past they shared. I admired Erin's unselfishness. She knew what she had to do to help Jake, even risking a life spent without him. She was innocence and experience all rolled into one and yes, she gave in to Jake quite easily but when you've been in love with a man for as long as you could remember, I guess I would do the same too.
Over all, Waiting For You was a good, realistic, romantic read that would give you a brief glimpse of what it would be like for a man living with his demons and a woman whose choices when it comes to the man she loves didn't really leave much room for her own desires.
I loved this book! Sweet, funny, sometimes tearful look at love.
Erin Shaw is an independent, strong young woman who has endured a lack of love but has not become cynical. Jake Landry, on the other hand, grew up in a house full of love but a decade of war in deplorable conditions, losing friends he loved, Jake is now not only cynical but suffers from PTSD.
One of the things that I loved was that Abigail Strom made you feel as if you really were Erin. She took me right into Erin's thoughts so that you could imagine every sigh or eye roll as the case may be. There is a period of maturation of both characters and you experience this growth right along with Erin and Jake.
After giving into the chemistry between the two of them, Erin discovers she is pregnant. I really loved her thought process that this could only happen to her. She has sex one time and ends up pregnant. Fear keeps her from telling Jake, but once he finds out, it is hands on one hundred percent. I think what I really loved about the story the most, is that it takes a serious issue, and a great mom's advice, for Jake to see that he truly does love Erin, maybe always has just as she has always loved him.
Can't wait to see what is next from Abigail Strom.
I have a real soft spot for military and former military heroes, and my heart just about broke for Jake and what he went through.
I think one of the things I liked best about this book is Erin trying to move on with her life after Jake told her he wasn’t interested. I’m not a huge fan of the hero or heroine jumping from one partner to another (and that didn’t really happen here) but I liked seeing Erin go on dates, and I especially like Jake’s reaction to seeing her go on dates. The reader gets to see that the dates don’t work out for one reason or another, but Erin still tries. I really liked that Erin didn’t just sit there saying she was moving on while pining away. I also think that Jake needed to see that she was moving on so that he could get to a place where he could be with Erin.
Something else I got a kick out of…Erin’s friend comparing Erin’s life to a romance novel. And speaking of that, I was really glad to see that Jake didn’t hold a grudge .
I enjoyed all three books about the Landry family, but Waiting for You is my favorite. It’s subtle and lovely, with beautifully drawn characters and piercing emotion (and an awesome build of sexual tension:).
I fell in love with Jake and Erin. They’re so real, so decent, so determined to do the right thing even as they struggle to figure out what that is. I read a review of the movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist that talked about the main characters’ “luminous goodness”, and I thought of that line while I was reading Waiting for You. I don’t mind a story where one of the characters is unlikeable in the beginning—a lot of redemption stories have a character like that, and I love redemption stories—but there’s also something really moving about watching two decent, honorable people fight their way towards love.
The writing is beautiful and romantic without being cheesy. The ending is amazing. I had tears in my eyes when I finished. This is definitely going on my keeper shelf!
Nice quick read about a soldier with PTSD and a woman who has loved him since they were kids. Their rocky relationship has a good ending, but beware of a couple graphic love scenes.
While I’m not typically a fan of the younger-sibling’s-best-friend trope, I am a fan of the second-chance (although in my opinion, this really isn't a second-chance since they never were together a first time) and - minor spoiler alert - the secret baby tropes. (Anyone who reads very many of the already-published reviews on Goodreads will find out there’s a baby involved in this book…)
Erin grew up in love with her best friend Allison’s older brother, Jake. After kissing her on her 16th birthday, he went back to active duty overseas, and she didn’t see him again for 10 years.
Now Jake is back in town, weighed down by all the horrible experiences he had at war, and at the double wedding of both his sisters. When he asks Erin to dance, the attraction he ignored when he was 19 rears its head. But he fights it.
Long story short, there’s back-and-forth, they have a one-night-stand, he goes away for six months to get his head on straight, and is shocked to discover Erin’s secret when he comes back.
I really wanted to like this story. I read it because Abigail Strom’s Show Me is on my 2018 Best Books list, and I wanted to see if her previous books were just as good. Or if she’s made a lot of growth as an author.
She’s made a lot of growth as an author.
I’ve gotten into the bad habit lately of not writing my review immediately after finishing a book, but I take notes if something strikes me while I’m reading. When I sat down to write this review, I hadn’t made any notes and couldn’t remember what the book was about. I had to skim through to refresh my memory. And now I remember the book was rife with a cliched plot (tortured hero pushes away the sweet heroine), a cliched hero (comes home from war damaged, wants to keep to himself, won’t get help), and not much to pull on my heartstrings.
I’ll give Ms. Strom another read, or two. But I probably won’t be reaching into her backlist for books to read.
This is my second title reading from the Landry series. In this story the brother Jake get his story...he is back from Afghanistan and is barely coping in what he saw over there. He has resided not to have a relationship but be alone. At his sister's wedding he comes in touch with Erin who was a childhood friend to his sister and who he always liked though she was somewhat younger than him. Erin has always had a crush on Jake and always wonder about him. Storyline dealt with him overcoming PTSD and being able to have a relationship.
I think lots of people can relate to this story. So many men fight for their country and after it is done they struggle to put their lives back together because of the terrible things they go through. This story showed how the love of family and love of someone special can give you the courage to get help to heal. It wasn't easy for Jake or Erin , they both made mistakes but with Erin insistence they were able to communicate how they feel in spite their fares and insecurities and in the end, love triumphs.
Actually i dont know if i really liked the book or not. its a love story about a veteran and a girl who has loved him since she was 13. she is a virgin, although aged 29 now. they have sex once (her first time) and she gets pregnant even since they used protection. at the end they keep the baby girl and he proposes. either i havent lived true love yet, or it is a way too romantic fairytale.
Beautifully written. I instantly fell in love with Erin & Jake. Her determination to be the exact opposite of her parents and his hurting soldier heart came together to change them both. When Jake spoke with his Mother in the hospital, I broke down and cried. It was so beatiful. Can't wait to see what else Ms. Strom has on the horizon!! :)
Erin waited 27 years to find the love of her life, and it turned out to be Jake, the man she had a serious crush on for all of those years. Jake had some Serious baggage because of his years in the Army. It took quite some time for him to deal with the issues, and then h remembered Erin, he stopped and went to find true love.
I read this book in one night, I couldn't put it down until the end of the book. It was full of excitement and love, even though I took until the last page before the man could say it !
Waiting for You was a heartwarming story that I found so enjoyable. Loved the way the characters had that kind of bond that was strained at times, but unbreakable .
When I started Waiting For You I didn't realize it was actually the third book in a series, thankfully I didn't need to read the first two to have this one make sense. All three books center around the Landry family but each one can read as a stand alone book.
This is (obviously) my first book by Storm and I absolutely loved it.
I hate to say it but sometimes you just never know what you will be getting when you pick up an indie book and thankfully this one was fabulous.
It was very well written, in fact I had to go back and check the publisher to make sure this was indeed a self published book, I love it when that happens!
In this book we get the story of Erin and Jake. Erin has been in love with Jake since she was thirteen years old and after sharing a brief but very passionate kiss with him at the age of 16 it is more than 10 years later before she sees him again.
Jake has been off to war serving his country and like most returning soldiers, he is sadly not without wounds only his aren't of the physical kind, his are emotional, so much so that he has completely shut down from the real world and is sure that love is something that should never be felt and is in fact an emotion that he isn't even capable of anymore.
Then Erin comes back into his life. A strong capable, independent woman that has just enough fire and passion to help him and to help him become whole again.
I really loved this book. It felt so real from the storyline to the characters to the ending. It was just something believable and completely endearing.
And while we do get glimpses of the other family members it will not stop me from going ahead and getting Storm's other two book and reading about them as well.
I liked Erin and I liked Jake as characters and even as a couple. I thought the writing was clear and concise and set up for a really good story. I needed a few more interactions before they got together to actually feel their connection. Something was missing for me. Their relationship felt more told than shown to me. They had very few actual conversations, and when they did they didn't reveal a lot to each other. They were separated for a lot of the time, which would have worked if they had more of a connection before he left, and even after he returned it was way to fast how easily he accepted her pregnancy. I thought Jake seeing a therapist was well done, but I would have liked to see him share more of his past and his recover with Erin, not go off to deal with it away from her and then simply want to take care of her when they were back together. He had enough angst and she was so put together seeing them work through his issues could have added a lot more depth to them and give me the emotions I didn't really feel between them. It was a good read, but my least favorite of the series.

I read this book the first time back in 2012, but being so long ago and so many books since then, it was like reading it for the first time all over again. This was a very sweet best friends older brother slash friends to lovers story. Jake is back home after being in the army for ten years and he's avoiding dealing with ptsd issues. Erin is best friends with Jake's younger sister and has been in love with him since she was like 13. They reconnect at his sister's wedding and a friendship of sorts blooms. There's definite chemistry between Erin and Jake but she's reluctant to share her feelings for fear he won't return them and Jake is seeing Erin in a new light, as a woman but he's determined to believe he's undeserving of her. Theirs is a slow burn, and heartwarming romance that takes time but eventually they get their hea. The romance is there, but it's more pg-13 than I normally read. That aside, it's a really good book and I'm glad I reread it!
I love stories where the heroine gets together with a longtime crush. I also love stories where the heroine gets together with one of her best friend’s older brothers/older brother’s best friend. I also love stories that have a tortured/damaged hero. Waiting for You by Abigail Strom had all three.
I really enjoyed this story. It’s romantic and humorous. There were a few things that I thought were a little clichéd, but Abigail Strom had a way of calling herself out and making it funny. I’ve really enjoyed both of the novels that I’ve read by Ms. Strom so far: Cross my Heart and Waiting for You. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.
I gave Waiting for You by Abigail Strom 4 STARS (3.5 STARS). I recommend this novel!
I would actually give this book a 3.5 if possible. I liked it, but I thought the ending/conclusion was rushed.
Spoiler: It seemed that the story went from Thanksgiving when they made love for the second time and Erin tells Jake she loves him, to putting up a Christmas tree and Jake proposing/Erin refusing, to Valentine's Day and their baby being born. And suddenly Jake realizes that he really does love Erin and voila a happy family. I would have like to see more development of their relationship during the pregnancy. When Jake tells Erin that he loves her and proposes again, she immediately says yes. That doesn't sound very believable after she refused him early. How can she know that he isn't just saying that to get her to marry him. Obviously as readers we know that he really does love her, but doesn't realize it, but we are omniscient readers. Erin and Jake are not and I think the ending to be explored more for the ending to be more believable.
It was her 16th birthday and her first kiss as a teenager. Erin Shaw still remembers how she fell in love with the boy who gave it to her, Jake Landry. But Jake left the next day for joining the Army and she never saw him again. Now, 11 years later, she happens to meet Jake on her friend`s wedding and still feels really attracted to him. But Jake apparently has changed a lot. After spending years between the war lines he feels empty and numb inside and not able to build up any relationships. So Erin, still a virgin up to then, decides that a relationship based on body attraction is not what she wants as long as Jake can`t love her in return. She is satisfied that Jake is leaving for a longer trip so she might forget about him. But for a special reason her schedule is screwed up. Easy-to-read, heart aching story with a somehow stereotype plot and a predictable happy-end. Nice book for reading in-between, 3.5 stars
